Huh: Democrats still not calling it the “Bank of America” stadium

posted at 6:41 pm on August 9, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Heh. Democrats are trying to fill the seats at their upcoming national convention (wouldn’t want to court another embarrassing little scenario like the one at Obama’s campaign kickoff), but their most recent invitation is conspicuously lacking at least one specific detail. I suppose if I just Google-Mapped “The Stadium, Charlotte, NC,” I’d find my way to my destination? (Hint: I just did, and I wouldn’t.) The full e-mail via BuzzFeed (emphasis mine):

From: Antonio Villaraigosa, DemConvention.com
Date: Thu, Aug 9, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Subject: See you in Charlotte

Dear Friend,

On Thursday, September 6th, Americans will come together in Charlotte to join President Obama and Vice President Biden as they accept our party’s nomination.

I’ll be there, and you could be there, too.

You can sign up for the opportunity to receive a community credential to attend the final day of the 2012 Democratic National Convention on September 6th. Visit BarackObama.com/community-credentials to find out how you can get your seat in the stadium and hear the President and Vice President’s speeches.

You can be there to witness Barack Obama’s last convention speech as a candidate for president. Eight years ago he gave the keynote address that propelled him onto the national stage. Four years ago he gave a historic acceptance speech in front of thousands of Americans. Now, it’s your chance to make history at the convention in Charlotte. …

Yes, I’ll try to avoid my fits of rapture just long enough to point out that they first tried to get away with calling it the “Panthers’ stadium” before reverting to just “the stadium” — because goodness knows they would not want to acknowledge that corporations or banks do useful things for anybody. Corporations and banks exists solely to profit tax-evading fat cats who donate ungodly amounts of money to those dastardly Republicans. They certainly do not do things like build stadiums, provide jobs and loans, create wealth, and supply us with goods and services we voluntarily purchase like computers, cars, and medical devices. Banks are just a bummer.

They certainly do not do things like build stadiums, provide jobs and loans, create wealth, and supply us with goods and services we voluntarily purchase like computers, cars, and medical devices. Banks are just a bummer.

Are you fkin serious? Banks build stadiums and produce cars and computers? They may help “finance” these things but giving credit to them for actually building them is ridiculous. You sound just like a democrat when they proclaim that a poor laborer is entitled to all your stuff because after all, they had a part in making it.

As for creating wealth, most of banks’ actual liabilities are so deep in the red that it would be hilarious if it didn’t threaten total economic meltdown. And the whole banking sector benefits democrats and the wrong kind of Republicans (cronyists). People like you blindly praise banks because you mistakenly think they represent good honest meritocratic capitalism. They really really don’t. See: TARP, quantitative easing, and every other crap policy the government pushes at the behest of the banks.

And just to reiterate, banks preferred Obama by a sizable amount in 2008. So you are praising Obama’s deepest-pocketed donors. What’s next, claiming Obama is ignoring the great contributions of the “hero” George Soros?

Today’s Fox Poll is Barry 49, and Romney 40.

The pollster blared headline that Barry’s lead increased and Romney slipped compared to the poll in July. Barry lead increased by 4, and Romney slipped by 1.

for a +9 for Dem for a+9 for Barry at first glance.

But the breakdown from the last poll was
D 42 R 38 I 18 and Refused 3

There were more Dem (+2) surveyed and fewer Republicans (-3) sampled compared to poll July. When one takes into account the sample change and MOE, there may actually be no change whatsoever, in the margin difference between the last poll and this new one.

The number of people who refused to answer party ID has also increased by 3%, who knows how many of those were actually Dems.

And these people who interpret polls are supposed to be trained professional statisticians? But this is not to say that Romeny does not have to pick up his game

You gotta wonder who they’re sampling–Nancy Pelosi and the Ghosts of Feminists Past?

I’m sure Ed will be along tomorrow morning with a nice dissection of these polls’ internals, showing that knee-jerk Democrats were answering the phone to support Obama, Independents were watching the Olympics, and Republicans were on vacation. And McCain got 27% of the vote in 2008.

gumbyandpokey on August 9, 2012 at 7:04 PM

Ed will eventually analyze the pols.
There is no party breakdown in the CNN poll , as usual. But there may be a little unintended glimpse. On page 9, it mentioned there was 419 Republicans and Independent leaning Republicans. So out of 1010 people sampled, Republicans and leaners amounted to about 41.5%. Leaving others at 58.5%. There is no data on undecided, but those usually amount to less than 5% in most polls. So Dems and leaning Dems may be around 53.5%. So there may be a possible +12 Dems overweight for a +7 edge for Barry.

The party breakdown is D 44 R 35 I 14 Refused to Identify 6.
for a +9 for Dem for a+9 for Barry at first glance

No way in #3!! or Earth will the electorate be 44% Democrat–it wasn’t even that high in 2008, when HopenChange was all the rage. Democrats will most likely be about 35% of the electorate, max, Republicans at least 33%, and Indies will be around 30%, more than double Fox’s sample of 14%.

Remember also that turnout figures on past elections are not based on voter registration (people who show up at the polls don’t show their party ID), but on exit polls. Exit polls are notorious for over-predicting votes for Democrats–maybe Democrats or liberals are more likely to talk to exit pollsters than Republicans–if we believed exit polls, President Kerry would have run for re-election in 2008. Exit polls showed the Wisconsin recall election to be a tie, while Scott Walker won the real election by 7%.

Early August polls are meaningless, when most people are on vacation (especially married people with children who vote more Republican than single people) and not answering the phone, but some of them might be meeting candidates and forming an impression. Wait until September, when the kids are back in school, and parents are back home, and then the polls might mean something.
