Video: Abortionist challenges protesters to adopt “ugly black babies”

posted at 12:41 pm on August 8, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

We’re a few days late to this story, which is “ugly” indeed, but not necessarily for the reason some may think.  Pro-life activists challenged Charlotte abortionist Ashutosh Ron Virmani at his door about his practice, which Virmani hotly defended.  As LifeNews and the Washington Examiner both note, Virmani offered up an argument that is not at all unique, but is rarely put so baldly:

Charlotte abortionist Ashutosh Ron Virmani was caught on camera telling pro-lifers to “adopt one of those ugly black babies.” …

Virmani defended his practice of abortion as an effort to save taxpayers money and prevent crime.  “I as a taxpayer do not wish to pay for those babies to be born and brought up; and kill those people in Colorado,” he said in reference to the Colorado theatre killer.

Notably, the Colorado killer who killed 13 and injured 58 moviegoers was a physically healthy white male born to a middle-class couple.

Operation Save America representatives can be heard on the video saying, “We will adopt them.”

There are actually three arguments from Virmani, two of which are often made, and one of which only rarely is.  That’s the inclusion of “black” in Vermani’s emotional retort, a rather interesting inclusion, considering Virmani’s south-Asian accent. Virmani almost certainly is assuming that pro-life Americans are racist by nature.  He’s supporting his position by assuming that conservatives would balk at adopting a child other than a Caucasian, which is not just offensive and presumptuous, it’s a clear sign of another kind of bigotry altogether than what this first looks like – but not the kind of racism that some have imputed to Virmani.

The other two go more to the thrust of abortion support, and they are related.  The first argument is that it rids society of undesirable actors presupposes that all unexpected pregnancies produce evil results, or even that it produces evil results out of proportion to desired pregnancies.  Second, the use of the word “ugly” in connection to the usefulness of abortion underscores the utilitarian approach to human life on which the first argument relies.  If an individual human life is “ugly” in or out of the womb, does that give us the right to snuff it out, regardless of whatever value system is used to make that determination? Connecting the two, are we who have been allowed to live wise enough to judge the potential of these human lives to sanguinely throw more than a million of them away in the trash every year?

The last argument — that no one will want these children — is easily refuted by the lengthy wait times for adoption, even in private adoption organizations.  There are millions of people who cannot have children for medical reasons who want nothing more than an infant to add to their families, and most more than one.  At times, the only hope these people have is that an intervention will take place before an expectant mother goes to see a Virmani or his ilk, who routinely sell despair at a profit while ending lives that may have built a family, found cures for diseases, produced groundbreaking technology, and so on.

Despair is really the true disease at work here, and despair is all that really profits in the end.  The cure is hope, and reaching those who are despairing with that hope before Virmani and his colleagues can make their sale.

Update: I clarified the language a little after the video to make my point more plain.  Also, like some in the comments, I am a little uncomfortable with activists demonstrating at the abortionist’s home — although Virmani didn’t seem to mind enough to ignore them, as he engaged them in debate.  As I recall, we all had a lot of criticism for progressive protesters who staged demonstrations at the homes of AIG execs and such.

Let’s face it, this is the argument that most abortion activists agree with, but won’t dare say in public.

spinach.chin on August 8, 2012 at 12:51 PM

And that is why most doctors would never be abortonist and the ones that are are evil..

Nothing says “conservative” like harassing a private citizen at his own door because of his (completely legal) occupation and then uploading a video of the encounter online to smear him for expressing constitutionally protected views.

Armin Tamzarian on August 8, 2012 at 12:54 PM

I’ve always said that. Make it easier for loving parents, with financially stable lives, to adopt American children with minimal costs to them. That includes same-sex couples. Each layer of ‘red tape’ makes it a barrier to adoption.

You cannot be against abortion and not allow any couples to adopt. I can guarantee you that ANY child will grow up to be a far better person if they’re actually raised in a household versus foster care. It also means that someone will care for their well being. It means someone will be responsible for their future. It means someone else if footing the bill. The foster care system costs YOU money, one way or another, if you pay taxes.

ManWithNoName on August 8, 2012 at 12:54 PM

But I thought white people shouldn’t be allowed to adopt black babies because doing so smacked of colonialism and racism. (I’ve heard that argument made often up here in Chicago). Wait, but if white people don’t adopt black babies, then they’re racist for not wanting a non-white baby.

I’m calling on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to help us make sense of this conundrum.

JimLennon on August 8, 2012 at 12:55 PM

So the pro-abortion argument is that we need abortion to kill black babies.

The founder of Planned Parenthood said the same thing.

gwelf on August 8, 2012 at 12:56 PM

Pro-life activists challenged Charlotte abortionist Ashutosh Ron Virmani at his door about his practice,

I’m not a big fan of ambushing people at their homes whether it is the busloads of welfare recipients the left have bussed in to protest in front of some public official’s home or this group confronting a baby killing “doctor.”

That being said, the causal relationship between not aborting and growing up to grow on a shooting spree was a more interesting idea than the racist comments. The idea of killing off children before they can become a burden to the state or become a killer (themselves) is telling as to how somebody like Virmani rationalizes what he does and the money he makes doing it. He views himself as an exterminator.

Those of you who are complaining about the protestors going to his door are missing the point.

The truth of the Abortionist came to the surface when he was actually challenged. The reality is the birth control movement began with believing the more children leads to more poverty.

As a result, Abortion soon became away of dealing with the issue if birth control was not used previously or failed.

Your ignoring the basic fact that he feels that the is helping not women, but the planet in providing Abortions.

His words are exactly the type of reason that if the GOP ever drops Abortion from the plank, we are in big trouble because there are many voters who will sit at home, and no amount of DEM failures will be able to persaude them to get up at that point.

The first argument is that it rids society of undesirable actors presupposes that all unexpected pregnancies produce evil results, or even that it produces evil results out of proportion to desired pregnancies.

The German national socialists thought they could presuppose this stuff too.

Happy Nomad on August 8, 2012 at 1:05 PM

I’m going to play the rare role of devil’s advocate here.

Now that I’ve heard the context of his rant I’m thinking that in his mind he had air quotes around the term “ugly black babies” as if to imply that they, as whites, would never consider adopting those babies that look so utterly different than they.

It’s still stupid and awful anyway you slice it but I don’t think he was channeling Margaret Sanger in this case. I think he looks at it as doing a “service” (ugh) for humanity. So, at worst he’s a racist bastard and at best he’s a deluded bastard.

I just finished an argument over abortion started when some troll on another site throw in how you could not be pro-life and feminist. When I mentioned the harm caused by abortion he pointed to the fact that an abortion is safer the giving birth (it is for 1/3 of the people involved) this is my response to that…

There are dangers to individuals in the pursuit of life, in the pursuit of death (abortion) there are dangers to societies. We have a whole nation that murders their girls because they can only have 1 child (anti-choice). We have people here saying that parents should be licensed to have children (anti-choice). We have a President here who will not allow doctors to treat children who survived an abortion. (Living Breathing Children). On the other side we have mothers who forgo live saving treatment to instead allow their child a chance at life. (pro-choice). Young women once had a tool to help them make the choice to say NO to over excited young men “what if I get…” today not so much. (1 less choice). One of the selling point pre RvW was that men could avoid the responsibility of raising a child but not a woman. Now more men do and women are still left with the remains of the act, be it a child or a life of knowing the emptiness of missing a child.

Armin Tamzarian on August 8, 2012 at 1:06 PM

There you go again… setting up a straw man argument. Nobody said that but you.

rhombus on August 8, 2012 at 1:21 PM

But the killer’s words are pretty eye-opening. You know that other libs around the nation are thinking “Da**it! You’re exposing our secrets!”

Bishop on August 8, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Yep. In my mind I pictured (warning: sports metaphor ahead) a long fly ball hit to the deepest part of the ballpark, the crowd on its feet screaming, yelling, cheering…then sitting back down in deep frustration, disappointment and embarrassment when it’s caught on the warning track in front of the wall.

What the doctor should have done is explain to them that God and Jesus are not real, that Hell is not real, thus they don’t need to live their lives based on 600 year old work of fiction.Go RBNY on August 8, 2012 at 1:12 PM

All those wounds from shooting themselves in the feet might leave a noticeable limp. Walking back or forward gets to be problematic.

Got a link to the gaffe or can you say here what it was? Thanks…

Scrumpy on August 8, 2012 at 1:20 PM

No link needed. All that was said was that the person in thead would have had coverage under RomneyCare. This is no different than how he explained what he considered to be the difference between Massachusetts and Obamacare during the primary.

It is not a “gaffe”. To some of the base maybe, but not to those voters in Ohio or Florida that we need to win.

Of course not, but a first trimester glob of biomatter isn’t a person to begin with. It has no brain.

GWB was the Rep presidential candidate. Twice. He even won his races and became president. Your credibility on this thread is already in freefall and you have to make it worse?

But do go on and tell us how religion is infantile and you might as well believe in the spaghetti monster and abortion is legal and…etc., etc., etc.

And how would the doctor know this? What’s interesting is that you seem to be using your non-belief in God to justify murder.

Trafalgar on August 8, 2012 at 1:19 PM

Because people like RBNY think that anything in the Bible shouldn’t be made law… Even if it is something sensible and universal like “thou shalt no murder.”

Thuggery is physical harassment. There was none.

The Tea Party has been succesfull because it made conservative activism a realistic possibility to people, not because we continued to “be nice”.

Bluray on August 8, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Thuggery is more than physical harassment and showing up at an individuals home is an intimidation factor.

And you can’t possibly be suggesting that conservative activism extends to yelling at a racist abortionist in front of his kids.

FWIW: I’ve seen pro-life activists at this racist doctor’s “practice” (I live nearby). Always peaceful (as opposed to “mostly peaceful” leftist activists).

No telling how many babies they’ve saved.

And… that practice is right adjacent to Grier Heights – a predominantly black area. That area has NOT improved because of the services of this doctor. I’d say it has been getting worse over the years. In fact, Charlotte just built a nice big and fancy Police Department right there near that racist doctor’s practice.

Despair is really the true disease at work here

The origin of despair is to lose faith in God. Job did not despair. Samson did. Very apt use of the word.

John the Libertarian on August 8, 2012 at 1:29 PM

When a pro-abortion letter to the editor of my city’s newspaper expressed views similar to those of that abortionist — i.e., if you are so against abortion, adopt the babies — I made the following points in a subsequent letter:

A lot of pro-life people do adopt unwanted babies. For example, former U.S. Rep. Anne Northup (R, Ky) and her husband adopted two of their six children; one of their adopted kids was black.

Pro-life people can’t adopt babies who are killed by abortion, however. If pro-abortion people care so much about wanting “unwanted” babies to be adopted, they should first advocate that the babies be allowed to live.

I pointed out that not everyone is able to adopt a baby, for many reasons. There are many other things they can do to show that they are pro-life — every pregnancy resource center or maternity home needs volunteers to do everything from staffing the office to mowing the lawn, to leading Bible studies for the residents.

Demanding that pro-life people adopt or shut up is merely another way to attempt to control speech. I know people who don’t like to be around babies, but still realize that every child has the God-given right to live. Those people aren’t suited for adopting a baby, but are glad to do other things that promote to a “culture of life.”

Pro-life people bring to many kinds of skills and resources to the aid of mothers and unborn babies who are exploited by abortion mills.

It takes a village to save a child.
