Should Romney demand that Obama release his college records in exchange for tax returns?

posted at 12:01 pm on August 7, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

That’s the suggestion from former Libertarian Party VP candidate Wayne Allen Root, who graduated in the same disciplines as Barack Obama at the same time (1983) from the same college, Columbia University.  If Harry Reid wants to play the “there must be something scary in those records” game, why not challenge Obama by offering to release 10 years of tax returns if Obama will release 10 years of college records?

Obama and his infamous strategist David Axelrod understand how to play political hardball, the best it’s ever been played. Team Obama has decided to distract America’s voters by condemning Mitt Romney for not releasing enough years of his tax returns. It’s the perfect cover. Obama knows the best defense is a bold offense. Just keep attacking Mitt and blaming him for secrecy and evasion, while accusing him of having a scandal that doesn’t exist. Then ask followers like Senator Harry Reid to chase the lead. The U.S. Senate Majority Leader appears to now be making up stories out of thin air, about tax returns he knows nothing about. It’s a cynical, brilliant, and vicious strategy. Make Romney defend, so he can’t attack the real Obama scandal.

This is classic Axelrod. Obama has won several elections in his career by slandering his opponents and leaking sealed documents. Not only do these insinuations and leaks ruin the credibility and reputation of Obama’s opponents, they keep them on the defensive and off Obama’s trail of sealed documents. …

My answer for Romney? Call Obama’s bluff.

Romney should call a press conference and issue a challenge in front of the nation. He should agree to release more of his tax returns, only if Obama unseals his college records. Simple and straight-forward. Mitt should ask “What could possibly be so embarrassing in your college records from 29 years ago that you are afraid to let America’s voters see? If it’s THAT bad, maybe it’s something the voters ought to see.” Suddenly the tables are turned. Now Obama is on the defensive.

My bet is that Obama will never unseal his records because they contain information that could destroy his chances for re-election. Once this challenge is made public, my prediction is you’ll never hear about Mitt’s tax returns ever again.

I admit that this scenario would give some satisfaction after Reid’s attack-dog McCarthyism of the past week or so.  There is precedent for release of both tax returns and college records; in 2004, both candidates released at least part of their college records, which showed that George W. Bush had a slightly better undergrad GPA than John Kerry, and both earned good grades in pursuit of their post-graduate degrees.  Other than that, the topic was completely uninteresting, because it had little to do with the issues in the election, and also because they came out early — well before either campaign could build a sustained narrative about them.

Tax returns hold the same cachet and relevance.  They’re usually dry affairs, especially for people who can afford to have professional preparation for their tax returns.  As I wrote earlier, they don’t really serve any purpose but to allow critics to seize on legal income and tax structuring in order to paint their opponents as too rich to trust.  That’s exactly what Barack Obama and David Axelrod want to do with Romney, which is why he’s balking at releasing any more of his returns.  The risk for Romney is that the refusal makes him look secretive, which Team Obama has already claimed, when in fact it’s no one’s business what’s in his tax returns.  Romney, just like all other politicians at the federal level, is required to make disclosures about his wealth in order to disclose potential conflicts of interest, which is what is actually relevant to the pursuit of public office.

People have criticized Obama for not releasing his college records, especially in 2008, when he ran as a super-intelligent outsider whose lack of experience was an asset to bringing a fresh perspective to Washington and policy.  Poor grades would certainly have been relevant at that time, but probably not so much today.  (Root argues in his piece that he thinks Obama scored scholarships as a “foreign exchange” student based on his years spent in Indonesia, but Obama had been in the US all through his high-school years, so that doesn’t seem very plausible.)

The problem for Romney in this kind of strategy is that it will serve as a distraction from his central premise: that Obama’s record as President shows that his policies have failed, and that the US needs new leadership, especially on the economy.  Even if he did adopt this strategy, the Obama campaign has Harry Reid playing Tail Gunner Joe on this issue, keeping a safe distance from the mud-slinging.  Even if, as Root supposes, Axelrod has been running Reid as a front man, a Romney challenge on Obama’s college records won’t shut Reid up.  Instead, Romney will end up punching below his weight, way off message, while Team Obama stays ostensibly on the sidelines and benefits from the derailing of Romney’s messaging. And by making the offer at all, Romney legitimizes the demand for the release of his tax returns.

In the end, Obama’s betting that people care more about Romney’s tax returns than their own pocketbooks.  If they stick with that strategy, they’re going to be in for a rude surprise in November — and the more the economy slides toward recession, the more the reminders of Romney’s business success might backfire on Obama.

Update: A couple of commenters are angry with me for using the term “McCarthyism,” claiming that the communist infiltration that Joe McCarthy claimed turned out to be real.  But that’s not what the term means.  As I wrote two years ago in another context, Joe McCarthy may have been right in general, but he ended up doing a lot of damage:

Note: People objected yesterday to the use of the word “McCarthyism” in my post, but I use it for two reasons.  First, it’s a term that the Left throws out with abandon any time people dissent from their orthodoxy and have the temerity to question their motivations.  Second, it is a clear, concise description that immediately conveys the kind of guilty-until-proven-innocent abuse of power from government officials when it occurs.

Some people objected because later information proved Joe McCarthy correct in general about Communist infiltration in the government, but that doesn’t acquit McCarthy of his abuse of power.  He accused people without evidence, many of them the wrong people, and did so as a representative of the government that is supposed to protect the individual presumption of innocence until evidence proves contrary.  McCarthy was a dangerous man, and perhaps even more for the discredit he heaped on the anti-Communist effort when the Soviet Union was at its most aggressive.

Specifically, McCarthy smeared people as Communists or Communist sympathizers when he didn’t have evidence to back up those claims, then demanded that they prove themselves innocent rather than him proving their guilt.  It was a despicable tactic then, and it’s a despicable tactic now.  No one should waste time trying to rehabilitate McCarthy.

2. How many candidates have released their college transcripts since 1980?

DuctTapeMyBrain on August 7, 2012 at 12:07 PM

NO. A solid refusal to release ANY MORE tax records has been made, its been effective, and should be adhered to in order to assure that the focus remains squarely on Obama’s abysmal record as president.

Frankly, at this point, it doesn’t matter what’s in those college records as pertains to this election. The point is to send Obama home permanently.

We can do a forensic study of his past at our leisure and expose anything that SHOULD have disqualified him from becoming president in the first place after he’s out of office.

Donald Trump seems to be taking up the role of Harry Reid in regard to the college transcripts. Romney doesn’t have to say a word.

Dee2008 on August 7, 2012 at 12:08 PM

How would we ensure completeness of these records?

The theory is there’s something damaging about his background and application, moreso than his grades. So, Obama releases something mundane like his transcripts, and we see some mediocre grades. meh. And Mitt’s challenge blows up.

If there’s a piece of paper at Columbia saying he got a foreign student scholarship we won’t be seeing that. We also won’t be seeing any of his thesis papers.

Uncledave on August 7, 2012 at 12:08 PM

YES – the college records should be demanded, but: 1) should be done by a surrogate, and 2) without any reciprocal agreement to release tax records.

AND – Romney should demand Obama release the Fast & Furious documents every single time he is asked about his taxes.

If Reid is going to be the attack dog on Romney’s tax returns – let’s Reid and Pelosi’s tax returns for the last 10 years.

dentarthurdent on August 7, 2012 at 12:09 PM

Turning the release of the returns from something he’s doing on principal to a bargaining chip is not a good idea for Romney, unless the offer is made on a face-to-face basis.

If he’s going to do it, he needs to do it at the first debate, to Obama’s face — I’ll release my tax returns if you release all your college transcripts. Do where there’s no Jay Carney, David Axelrod or supports in the big media to run interference, in a place where Obama has to answer yes or no, and then you make the trade worth doing, even if the same big media would ignore whatever’s in Obama’s records and obsess over every detail in Mitt’s 1040 forms.

My suggestion is for Romney to release only the 1040 summary forms, to prove Harry Reid is a liar, and release along with them all of his college records, LSAT and GMAT scores, AND records from the purchases and sales of his homes. And he should do all of this the night before Obama’s DNC convention speech, followed immediately by TV ads stating that he has released everything.

He doesn’t have to demand that Obama release anything, and he shouldn’t. He should just release all of his own records and then his campaign can say he is now the King of Transparency.

However, I agree that at least currently it’s a distraction. Owebama would not now be accusing Romney of a steel workers wife’s death if the tax returns were working. His filthy new ad shows he will do anything to win.

Romney needs to stick to the economy, the deficit, ObamaCare and the decimation of the military.

When he ran against his demcratic opponent for governor, who had released her tax returns but not her husband’s, (Governor Romney released none), he put out campaign ads which asked, “What’s she hiding?”. That same question will dog him until he releases more returns. Obama has been vetted on his college carrer, etc and was elected in an electoral college landslide. Wayne Allen Root, compared to Dick Morris, has mostly been right, and has made a living betting on big things. He knows a lot.

(Root argues in his piece that he thinks Obama scored scholarships as a “foreign exchange” student based on his years spent in Indonesia, but Obama had been in the US all through his high-school years, so that doesn’t seem very plausible.)

Right, but Obama still may have identified himself as foreign born in his application. It’s possible he applied for some type of scholarship or aid that was only offered to foreign-born students from Third World countries. We don’t know if/when he gave up his Indonesian citizenship, and we know from his publisher’s directory that he was presenting Obama (presumably with Obama’s knowledge) for years as having been born in Kenya.

What I find odd is that nobody at Columbia University at the same time as Obama remembers Obama being there. How is that possible?

Bottom line is Obama has something to hide. If he had a stellar academic record as a U.S. citizen student, why hide it? We know he’s not shy about touting his own “brilliance.” If there were any actual proof of it, we’d have seen it long ago.

No because he could be setting himself up for a sucker punch

obama played the birth issue the same way. Because it worked in the sense it changed few minds, he could easily do a replay on any of the remaining ‘missing’ records

IMHO Obama has a concocted history and it is my opinion the latest birth record’ is fake. However, the press played it his way, and those who do not want to believe will not. He owns the university crowd, and digital records are worth the software from which they originate

It is too hard for many to accept the possibility the One is a hoax. PC has the pols frozen like deer in the headlights/ No one wants the riots that would ensue. Obama and the thugs know this, they play this

I heard Root on Cunningham and he is on target, but Obama will use the MSM to void truth. Juan Williams is a good litmus for the nation. The guy would not accept evidence about Obama’s history if it was hand delivered by the angel Gabriel

Root is a favorite of mine because of his honesty and his sharp analytical abilities. He is a truth teller, rare indeed

Romney shouldn’t demand the records be released. His surrogates, however? Sure.

Romney should stay above it all, talking about the economy, jobs, etc. But folks like Sununu, Dan Senor, etc. — they can turn this whole discussion into a ploy to embarrass both the president and the media.

Any time the tax records issue comes up, Romney’s surrogates should say some variation of:

“This records game is pretty silly. But if the president insists on playing it, how about he releases his college records? I’m sure we can find an anonymous tipster to tell us something embarrassing about what’s in them.”

And then go on to speculate about what it might be — bad grades that disprove the notion he’s the brightest guy in the room, Rocks-for-Jocks course selection that helped him breeze through, a radical far-left bent in courses that most Americans would recoil from — they should list any ugly possibility they can think of.

The goal here isn’t to get the actual records released. It’s to embarass the media and the president by demonstrating how silly this whole release-the-records exercise is.

If Romney were asked about it, he could then laugh it off.

Barack Obama here. Everything is going according to plan. America is dying. I am the reason. America is what is wrong with the world. You have to suffer. I can not believe you thought I was an American. No, I am not. I am a world citizen. Borders are illegal in my eyes. Plus, you stole this land anyway. You will not have a nation when I am done with you. I have not even begun to “transform” you. You will “change.” I will make you. Feel free to vote for me. Well, vote for me if you are suicidal. I hate you. I hate your children. I hate your parents for having you. See you in November–suckers. I am Barack Hussein Obama and I approve this post.

Obama has been vetted on his college carrer,
plewis on August 7, 2012 at 12:16 PM

Vetted HOW if nobody has ever seen his records?
What is Obama hiding?

dentarthurdent on August 7, 2012 at 12:20 PM

IN EXCHANGE FOR his tax returns?!?

HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just DEMAND DEMAND DEMAND the hell out of Obama.
As with most bullies, they’re little cowards with a big trap.

Czar of Defenestration on August 7, 2012 at 12:11 PM

Would anyone trust the dear liar in that kind of deal?

Just envision the big day – Romney releases his documentation and ‘suddenly’ there is a glitch in the WH web-site or something – with the promise that it’ll be ‘fixed’ in a few days..

…. And it never happens

Chip on August 7, 2012 at 12:20 PM

How many smart people do you know who pay so much to hide their grades and accomplishments?

Schadenfreude on August 7, 2012 at 12:14 PM

That would be every Presidential candidate who have not released their college transcripts (hint that’s all of them). Perhaps you believe all Presidents are marionettes.

libfreeordie on August 7, 2012 at 12:20 PM

libfreeordie on August 7, 2012 at 12:18 PM

So if Obama had the highest marks possible in the most difficult classes offered and he made it through college entirely on merit his transcripts would still remain top secret to this day?

NotCoach on August 7, 2012 at 12:20 PM

Can not imagine why Barry’s college transcripts, papers, etc, have not been leaked…
Were they take by Presidential Executive Order from the universities???

However, it is now Romney’s time to show some balls about something. Anything. If not, he will die the Death of a Thousand Duck Nibbles from the Fraudster and the MSM.

SurferDoc on August 7, 2012 at 12:15 PM

Check this out:

A critical test comes later today when the Muslim Public Affairs Council holds an inquisition, er, “press briefing” to demand that Romney denounce Rep. Michele Bachmann for telling the truth about members of the Muslim Brotherhood exerting influence at the highest ranks of the U.S. government.

How many presidents have been involved in a major scandal with un-tracked guns that resulted in over 200 deaths?

How many?

Chip on August 7, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Root’s point is not so much about the grades:

Here’s my gut belief: Obama got a leg up by being admitted to both Occidental and Columbia as a foreign exchange student. He was raised as a young boy in Indonesia. But did his mother ever change him back to a U.S. citizen? When he returned to live with his grandparents in Hawaii or as he neared college-age preparing to apply to schools, did he ever change his citizenship back? I’m betting not.

etc.

dont taze me bro on August 7, 2012 at 12:21 PM

In the end, Obama’s betting that people care more about Romney’s tax returns than their own pocketbooks. If they stick with that strategy, they’re going to be in for a rude surprise in November — and the more the economy slides toward recession, the more the reminders of Romney’s business success might backfire on Obama.

People in the voting booth “Mhhh, do I care about Mitt’s taxes, horses, or my job, house, financed, kids’ future, what a latrine the dummy degenerate in the WH made of the land?”

Schadenfreude on August 7, 2012 at 12:21 PM

And he is the only candidate whose transcripts were released (voluntarily or not). Why should Obama be asked to do something NO other candidate has done?

libfreeordie on August 7, 2012 at 12:18 PM

How is it we know algore’s college grades?
How is it Romney’s high school and college records are out?

dentarthurdent on August 7, 2012 at 12:22 PM

The fact that the birthers have flocked to this post says everything about the nature of the college transcripts debate. Once again, birthers are demanding things from Obama that no other candidate has offered and acting as if that proves Obama is “concealing” things. Continue to pursue this, it will totally work with independents.

libfreeordie on August 7, 2012 at 12:22 PM

It makes rational sense to demand O’s transcripts in exchange, but I get the feeling that Mr Mush doesn’t have a lot of fight in him to do it right. Better to make a distraction from the tax returns by saying something to gain attention, like a statement of support for Chick Fil A. The news that Romney dissed the base on that is out across the internet and even the msm. It’s not actually helping Romney in the polls, and since Friday when he dissed the base the polls (Rasmussen) have been going south for him.
Yes, since Friday, Romney’s polls have been dropping like a rock. Most notably, in North Carolina, where (opposition) to gay marriage is paramount, Romney is down 3. Romney has simply blown it on the gay marriage issue, and he needs to take a forceful conservative stand, or relinquish the nomination.

anotherJoe on August 7, 2012 at 12:22 PM

Stay away from distractions and small balls.

libfreeordie on August 7, 2012 at 12:18 PM

To fulfill his promise of uber transparency, to truly become above the fray as he also stated he wished to be.

Just think, Bark could set a precedent here and become known for something more than being an economic simpleton.

Bishop on August 7, 2012 at 12:22 PM

I think a Republican Senator needs to go on the floof of the US Senate and say that somebody told him that Obama is so dense that he never got above a C- at Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard law.
The ego of this man would not allow him to let this charge go unanswered and we’d see those transcripts.

That is, if they exist. I find it interesting that nobody seems to recall going to school with Obama. Nobody seems to recall being in the Constitutional Law class he taught. It’s very odd.

Happy Nomad on August 7, 2012 at 12:23 PM

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/born-kenya-obamas-literary-agent-misidentified-birthplace-1991/story?id=16372566

I’m not saying he was born in Kenya. I’m saying he lied about it when it served him. Obama has unsealed court records to destroy his opponents on more than one occasion.

High road be damned. Go full Alinsky and use his tactics against him I say. He cannot withstand the scrutiny.

DanMan on August 7, 2012 at 12:23 PM

There is too much not know about the history of this Manchurian President.

kingsjester on August 7, 2012 at 12:06 PM

Problem is he’s not “Manchurian”. That would mean he’s an operative against the U.S., from another land.

This is an American who hates his land’s “dream”, who lives only for his own glory and power. He hates people. He even hates the Ds. They are just the way to his power. He considers them all fools.

Schadenfreude on August 7, 2012 at 12:24 PM

Obama has been vetted on his college carrer, etc

plewis on August 7, 2012 at 12:16 PM

LOL. Sure he has. He told us he graduated from Columbia University, and we’re supposed to just accept that as gospel — no proof required. He refuses to release his transcript or any of his other records from Columbia, and nobody who was in the same undergrad program at the same time Obama says he was there remembers him being there, but we should just shut up and take his word for it — because it’s not like Obama would ever lie to us or anything.

AZCoyote on August 7, 2012 at 12:24 PM

No. Enough squirrels. BTW, here’s really why Barry hates Mitt.

a capella on August 7, 2012 at 12:05 PM

0bama hates the world, not just Mitt, because 0bama’s daddy never loved him.

No doubt, this hatred is going to manifest itself in Barry slyly giving Mitt (and America) the middle finger in the debates. The only question is, how many times will he do it?

UltimateBob on August 7, 2012 at 12:24 PM

Romney should announce that he is releasing his college records.

Then let surrogates ask where Obama’s college records are.

Why so secret?

faraway on August 7, 2012 at 12:24 PM

No.
Romney should just let Reid hang himself, which he seems to be doing. Once Romney would play this game it opens up the chance for all kinds of innuendos and accusations that could be used as distractions.
Never play by your opponents rules, they chose them for a reason…and it ain’t to lose.

Full transcripts are available of Al Gore and Mitt Romney’s college careers? And they were leaked by the campaigns? Try again. It seems that the issue is that the right hasn’t been able to persuade anyone at Harvard, Columbia or Occidental to release Obama’s private records. This is Obama’s fault?
