Obama’s sleaziest ad yet: Romney kinda sorta killed a man’s wife by closing down his steel plant

posted at 4:01 pm on August 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

Please, spare me the objection that this comes from The One’s Super PAC, not his formal campaign, and therefore it’s technically not an “Obama ad.” That excuse never flew for Romney when his own Super PAC was carpet-bombing Gingrich and Santorum in the primaries. The wall of separation between a campaign and its PAC is all but invisible to the naked eye. If you think it’s easy for the White House to get Harry Reid to smear Romney over his tax returns, imagine how easy it must be for them to get former White House spokesman and current Priorities USA honcho Bill Burton to fling feces like this.

They won’t attack him for being Mormon (I hope), so calling him a murderer will have to do:

The pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action lobbed a heavy-duty attack at Mitt Romney this morning, airing an ad that links the closure of a GST Steel plant in Kansas City to the loss of a family’s health insurance — and the death of a woman some time later…

In the case of this particularly jarring super PAC ad, it may also be relevant that Soptic’s wife died in 2006, years after the GST factory closed down

I asked Priorities USA strategist Bill Burton to explain the connection between Romney, Bain and a cancer fatality that happened near the end of Romney’s tenure as governor of Massachusetts. The lapse in time between the plant closing and Soptic’s death doesn’t mean the ad is invalid, but it raises questions about the cause and effect relationship here.

“We’re illustrating how long it took for communities and individuals to recover from the closing of these businesses,” Burton responded. “Families and individuals had to find new jobs, new sources of health insurance and a way to make up for the pensions they lost. Mitt Romney has had an enduring impact on the lives of thousands of men and women and for many of them, that impact has been devastating.”

Romney stopped doing work for Bain in 1999; the steel plant in question here closed down in 2001; Soptic’s wife passed away in 2006; and yet, Romney’s somehow culpable. Perfection. You know what’s really interesting about this spot? It’s not even a health-care ad. It’d be sleazy under any circumstances, but there’d at least be a concrete policy angle if Burton was selling it as an argument for, say, single-payer, to decouple insurance from employment. He’s not. There appears to be no actual policy argument here at all, unless The One now opposes layoffs on principle, for fear that someone somewhere might be left without insurance. Is that where our very pro-business president — seriously, just ask him — is now at? As John Sexton says, does this mean O himself is on the hook until 2014 for any deaths that resulted from GM dealerships being closed in 2009? I thought workers bore some responsibility to find a new job with insurance after they’re laid off, but if he wants to take the blame for human tragedies at Government Motors, fine by me.

I have to say, though, it’s a comfort to me to know that Hopenchange will be well and truly shattered come November, no matter what happens on election day. Even if he pulls it out, after a campaign like this the idea that he and his team represent some sort of new, more exalted form of politics will be fully exposed for the joke that it is. His second term won’t be better, but at least people won’t be kidding themselves anymore, if any still are. There’s some small consolation in that.

Apparently this dope wasn’t too concerned about his wife. Sure didn’t know much about her. The lib way is to blame someone else. You’re the man, your responsibility to take care of your family. Nice work pal. Glad your not my dad.

The key to the Big Lie is repetition. Ad after ad. Sob story after sob story. Followups in due course by the media. Human interest features. A reference in every whistle stop speech. Over and over. Oh, and the Mormons are racist & sexist & homophobic, and they are a cult too–did you hear that, “Christian voters”?

Having the American news media, the most gargantuan propaganda machine in the history of mankind, working for you 24/7 must be a great comfort for the Dear Leader. What should be a coronation for Mitt versus such a pathetic failure of an opponent could become a squeaker or worse. A great deal depends on the Romney response. RINO weakness equals suicide.

jazzuscounty on August 7, 2012 at 6:25 PM

I feel sorry for the woman’s family as they suffered a great loss, however, the husband has now politicized her death. Did he come forward to do this or was his info cherry picked from a list of former companies that Bain controlled? Was the husband reimbursed for his portrayal? That would be even worse.

Powerline has an interesting post on the fate of the Delphi people and their pensions..there might be an ad in this.

But now, the Daily Caller has obtained emails showing that the U.S. Treasury Department, led by Timothy Geithner, was the driving force behind terminating the pensions of the 20,000 salaried Delphi retirees. According to the Daily Caller, the emails contradict testimony given to Congress by Former Treasury official Matthew Feldman and former White House auto czar Ron Bloom, both key members of the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry during the GM bailout.

The emails show that representativesof the PBGC were “uninvited” from meetings at which the Treasury Department considered what to do about the Delphi pensions. This, says the Daily Caller, is likely a violation of federal law (29 U.S.C. §1342).

Other emails show that the PBGC believed it needed to clear decisions and action plans through senior administration officials. This view seems to have been justified. One email describes how the Treasury Department’s Feldman reported that he “has made progress discussing [a] proposal with a number of key folks in Treasury and at [the] White House, but he has not yet wrapped up his coordination.” Feldman “indicated that there is an 8am call tomorrow that he’ll use to close the communication-loop, and he’s confident he’ll have a fully-vetted Treasury view after that call.”

Terrye on August 7, 2012 at 5:43 PM

I agree Terrye, completely. But if Joe Septic is determined to blame his wife’s death on her not having health insurance, and he is determined to blame someone for her not having insurance, then he should start with the person most proximately responsible for her not having insurance. And that person is not Mitt Romney.

What the hell do you care? You are Canadian..it is not any of your business…

Speaking as a Canadian, I love your country more than the First Lady of the United States does. America is a truly great nation and the best next door neighbor that any country has ever had.

America is also the lynch-pin of western civilization. If America falls, we all go down. So yes, we do have an interest in what happens in your country.

and btw, at this point it is supportive of Obama to go after Romney.

Agreed! I am appalled at some posting here who seem to think that handing Bambi another 4 years to destroy your country is an acceptable price for their electoral temper tantrums.

I get that they feel the GOP hasn’t adequately represented them in Washington. They either do not understand or do not care that with another 4 years of Bambi, there won’t be a GOP or Washington for them to whine about.

It seems I love your country more than they do, too.

Luckily for us, Canadians do not get to vote in our elections.

Terrye on August 7, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Regrettably, also agreed. Smart, conservative Canadians are more numerous than the media establishments of either of our countries will have you know. Unfortunately, despite recent positive developments, we still have a long way to go.

The ad was complete BS. If Bain hadn’t bought GST Steel, then GST steel would have gone under in 1993. That was the original owners choices, sell or go under. So if nothing else Bain gave the workers 8 more years of paychecks and health coverage than they would have had. So why didn’t Soptic take advantage?

.

I’m disgusted enough with the PAC but what kind of a scumbag is Soptic for letting the death of his wife to be used in this way? Seriously, the mill closed down five years before his wife passed and somehow Bain and Mitt Romney is to blame? As was pointed out on Rush Limbaugh’s show this afternoon, under Obamacare Soptic would be fined for not having healthcare. Is that somehow Mitt Romney’s fault too??? This, IMO, is going to backfire on Obama and the filthy bastards who are working to give him a second term.

I was living in New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina/Rita. The number of deaths attributed to “broken hearts” over the loss was amazing. The reality is probably that seasoned citizens facing the stress of rebuilding after massive loss did do some of them in. Nevertheless, there was a lot of blame that it must have been the lack of federal funding that killed grandpa with GWB being blamed for the death.

BTW, if Bain had not bought this company, this man would have lost his job two years earlier..whose fault would it have been if he had still not managed to get health insurance?

And exactly what should have Bain have done? Kept the plant open without a profit? Steel plants were shutting down all over the country..were the other managers also liable for their people forever?

No, you are being dishonest and unreasonable and you have no integrity..that is obvious.

Was the gun one that Pres. Obama and Attorney Gen. Eric Holder and their policies that enabled the drug pirates to have the gun?

OK, Democrats try this on for size. The US Army in Afghanistan will not release a MEDEVAC helicopter for the rescue of a wounded warrior without an armed escort; thus possibly dangerously pulling from missions the short supply of attack helicopters and increasing the MEDEVAC time waiting for the escort. The Marines, Air Force and the Brits have armed MEDEVAC helicopters and fly alone; but not the US Army. After witnessing the loss of one soldier because this, Michael Yon, a photo journalist in Afghanistan, and veterans like me went ballistic. Congressional members and veterans have asked for a change, but nothing happens.

I may be the first to write this, but based on the Democrat’s PAC attack on Romany for supposedly being a killer, President Obama has knowingly allowed American soldiers to die because he refuses to change the US Army’s MEDEVAC policy.

So who is the killer now.
