Obama’s sleaziest ad yet: Romney kinda sorta killed a man’s wife by closing down his steel plant

posted at 4:01 pm on August 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

Please, spare me the objection that this comes from The One’s Super PAC, not his formal campaign, and therefore it’s technically not an “Obama ad.” That excuse never flew for Romney when his own Super PAC was carpet-bombing Gingrich and Santorum in the primaries. The wall of separation between a campaign and its PAC is all but invisible to the naked eye. If you think it’s easy for the White House to get Harry Reid to smear Romney over his tax returns, imagine how easy it must be for them to get former White House spokesman and current Priorities USA honcho Bill Burton to fling feces like this.

They won’t attack him for being Mormon (I hope), so calling him a murderer will have to do:

The pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action lobbed a heavy-duty attack at Mitt Romney this morning, airing an ad that links the closure of a GST Steel plant in Kansas City to the loss of a family’s health insurance — and the death of a woman some time later…

In the case of this particularly jarring super PAC ad, it may also be relevant that Soptic’s wife died in 2006, years after the GST factory closed down

I asked Priorities USA strategist Bill Burton to explain the connection between Romney, Bain and a cancer fatality that happened near the end of Romney’s tenure as governor of Massachusetts. The lapse in time between the plant closing and Soptic’s death doesn’t mean the ad is invalid, but it raises questions about the cause and effect relationship here.

“We’re illustrating how long it took for communities and individuals to recover from the closing of these businesses,” Burton responded. “Families and individuals had to find new jobs, new sources of health insurance and a way to make up for the pensions they lost. Mitt Romney has had an enduring impact on the lives of thousands of men and women and for many of them, that impact has been devastating.”

Romney stopped doing work for Bain in 1999; the steel plant in question here closed down in 2001; Soptic’s wife passed away in 2006; and yet, Romney’s somehow culpable. Perfection. You know what’s really interesting about this spot? It’s not even a health-care ad. It’d be sleazy under any circumstances, but there’d at least be a concrete policy angle if Burton was selling it as an argument for, say, single-payer, to decouple insurance from employment. He’s not. There appears to be no actual policy argument here at all, unless The One now opposes layoffs on principle, for fear that someone somewhere might be left without insurance. Is that where our very pro-business president — seriously, just ask him — is now at? As John Sexton says, does this mean O himself is on the hook until 2014 for any deaths that resulted from GM dealerships being closed in 2009? I thought workers bore some responsibility to find a new job with insurance after they’re laid off, but if he wants to take the blame for human tragedies at Government Motors, fine by me.

I have to say, though, it’s a comfort to me to know that Hopenchange will be well and truly shattered come November, no matter what happens on election day. Even if he pulls it out, after a campaign like this the idea that he and his team represent some sort of new, more exalted form of politics will be fully exposed for the joke that it is. His second term won’t be better, but at least people won’t be kidding themselves anymore, if any still are. There’s some small consolation in that.

Despicable. And yet, some ABRs insist they’ll vote for the campaign that would put an ad like that out. Funny, that.

Haha, The Boss Emeritus today:

But if memory serves, the “rich” people Robin Hood took from were public officials who were wealthy because they were corrupt and stole from the people they were supposed to be serving. To say Robin Hood “took from the rich and gave to the poor” is about as accurate as Kevin Coster’s accent in the 1991 movie of the same name. Brave Sir Robin didn’t redistribute the wealth, but rather returned to people what government had stolen from them. “Robin Hood in reverse” would be the Sheriff of Nottingham, and apparently right now there’s only room for one sheriff in this town.

Brilliant, and spot on.

Emphasis mine.

Lets please give Doug Powers the credit he deserves.

The plant closed in 2001, and she died in 2006? If they were really too poor to purchase medical insurance and his custodian job didn’t provide it during those years, then why didn’t they sign up for Medicaid? It’s not like there has never been any way for poor people in this country to get healthcare before Obamacare. Medicaid has been around for many years.

Story smells like BS.

the typical projections of severely damaged and damaging narcissists. if i needed any confirmation that barry and team barry were sociopaths-always a possibility with those with NPD but not a certainty- using this man and his dead wife in this depraved manner is the proof.

with grief there is always the blame stage- most husbands would naturally blame themselves at some point. maybe they would lash out at doctors or even at their god. that’s all natural human coping behavior. healthy adjusted people move beyond to acceptance in their own time. maybe this man sadly- for him- really holds romney responsible- but that’s something he would have needed to work out with his spiritual advisor or doctor. it’s an immature and psychologically poisonous response.

hospitals cannot deny people care. there are alternatives to your company insurance- like COBRA or getting another job. there are charities that offer aid. but the attitude here is that you are a helpless baby and government will solve all your ills- blame capitalists, business people and republicans for all your misfortunes. they’re not progressives, they are regressives.they want grown men to be helpless babies who cannot figure out on their own how to get health insurance for their families.

plenty of people have been made jobless through the economic decisions of obama- they too have lost their insurance, lost their homes, lost their middle class lifestyles. obamacare is going to see people thrown off their insurance in droves. obamacare is going to harm far more people than anything romney has ever done as a businessman.

the man needs grief counseling- not to be used as a pathetic pawn by low life gangsters.

More importantly, Team Mitt has not done a good job putting Obama on Defense on a consistent basis. This is not looking good. I’m not being overly pessimistic. I am being objective on this.

Let’s make no mistake, this ad could be devestating.

It is hard to put someone on defense when they have no shame.

As for this ad being devastating..that could work both ways. I have a feeling that a lot of people are going to think this is way way over the top.

And btw, why blame Romney for the fact that Obama has no scruples?

I remember when Republicans went after Bill Clinton….when all was said and done, he was in better shape not worse. Sometimes people get turned off by the tone they hear…not just the message. If you know what I mean.

Googled GST Steel and this was at the top of the page:)

OBAMA MYTH: Bankrupting a successful steel mill in Kansas City, MO.

REALITY: The GS Technologies plant that Barack Obama has used to attack Mitt Romney was scheduled to be closed if Romney and his colleagues hadn’t bought the plant and tried to help turn it around.

In 1993, GS Technologies, a company Bain Capital had invested in, purchased a struggling Kansas City steel plant from Armco. Prior to this investment, Armco announced plans to close the Kansas City plant if a buyer could not be found.

This investment – and $170 million in upgrades – kept the Kansas City plant competitive in a tough international market and saved the steel workers’ jobs for eight years.

Two years after Mitt Romney left Bain Capital, the GS Technologies plant was closed because of foreign steel dumping into the U.S. market. Thirty-one other steel companies declared bankruptcy during the same period.

Chuck Schick on August 7, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Our side needs to get creative about going around the MSM and I have an idea.

The right leaning PACs could use robocall campaigns to inform people about things Obama has done. Not direct ads about Romney or Obama, but a short synopsis of news stories widely ignored by the MSM.

For example: how the admin lied about the Delphi pensions, Fast and Furious, examples of where rule of law was ignored (numerous), times O lied (numerous), Black Panthers case, underhanded way Obamacare was passed, how the MSM filters their news, Solyndra and other examples of cronyism, executive orders about immigration and other things to illegally go around congress, using the IRS to harass political opponent supporters, etc. The list is endless. There’s so much people don’t know about.

Robocalls could include a short headline (many shocking to the uninformed) plus some key words. Tell people to go to google or bing to find out more. Letting them investigate for themselves will make the info more believable. Tell them who to contact if they’re outraged. Don’t ask for a contribution, just inform. Might open some eyes and reach people who currently rely on the MSM, and it would inevitably drive down O’s likeability.

Atlas Shrugged on Robin Hood:

[Robin Hood] is not remembered as a champion of property, but as a champion of need, not as a defender of the robbed, but as a provider of the poor. He is held to be the first man who assumed a halo of virtue by practicing charity with wealth which he did not own, by giving away goods which he had not produced, by making others pay for the luxury of his pity. He is the man who became a symbol of the idea that need, not achievement, is the source of rights, that we don’t have to produce, only to want, that the earned does not belong to us, but the unearned does. He became a justification for every mediocrity who, unable to make his own living, had demanded the power to dispose of the property of his betters, by proclaiming his willingness to devote his life to his inferiors at the price of robbing his superiors. It is this foulest of creatures – the double-parasite who lives on the sores of the poor and the blood of the rich – whom men have come to regard as the moral idea.” “. . . Do you wonder why the world is collapsing around us? That is what I am fighting, Mr. Rearden. Until men learn that of all human symbols, Robin Hood is the most immoral and the most contemptible, there will be no justice on earth and no way for mankind to survive.

The problem is that Romney’s campaign has been completely 1 dimensional. You cannot win an election with a 1 dimensional strategy like Mitt is trying to do. He has not communicated his economic plan well, and the economy is the ONLY thing he is spending significant time on.

what about energy. Haven’t you noticed gas prices ticking up and up? What about all of the scandals bubbling up around Obama? Mitt has a lot of ammo to use. He is using very little of it.

I am not blaming Romney in any way for Obama’s sleaze. I AM blaming him for not effectively combating it.

..there is some sort of calculus going on in the Romney camp; his internals must be showing him something that is missed by the professional talking head punditry. Maybe it’s telling them that all of this negativity turn off the voters like you suggest.

One has to believe that a man who rescued companies from financial oblivion and made money for his investors — as well as saved or created jobs (I know, I know) in 80% of those companies — can be given credit for being a good strategist. Besides, it sure does look like Obama is the one panicking here while Romney is keeping his cool.

No one has read or can articulate in brief what Romney’s 59 point plan is. If it cannot be digested in short order by the voting public, it’s as useless as not having a plan. I’m not saying the 59 points are not necessary. They may very well be. But a 59 point plan is not effective politicking.

I am talking about
1. Fast and Furious
2. LightSquared
3. the DOJ/Black Panther debacle
4. the white house defense leaks
5. Treasury axing non union pensions in favor of union pensions
6. Solyndra and all the rest of rest of the green tech loans

Not saying Medicaid would have saved this lady’s life, just that it is (and long has been) available to poor people, and even to people who are not so poor. There are also clinics that will treat people of limited means who do not have Medicaid coverage. Anyone who really needs medical treatment, and wants it, can usually get it.

Of course, nobody can force a legally competent adult to seek or accept medical treatment if they don’t want it — whether it’s because they’re in denial about their symptoms, or because they prefer to spend their money on something else (like a daughter’s college education).

LOL. Do you ever take your act on the road? Is there a two-drink minimum in the venues where you perform?

AZCoyote on August 7, 2012 at 5:22 PM

His wife died while Romney was finishing up as governor of MA, having implemented state-run health care for the entire population of that state. Had they moved to MA when Romney ran the place she might have lived.

Can you remember when state-run healthcare was considered a bad thing on this formerly conservative blog?

arnold ziffel on August 7, 2012 at 5:26 PM

I’ve heard Romney is going to respond to this ad with a devastating statement outlining his 59 point plan.

No, because Romney’s too busy repeating the charge on whether he should release his taxes by continuing to argue about whether he should release his taxes with senators who have nothing to do with anything but he answers them anyway just to keep the ball in play for the other team.

Despicable. And yet, some ABRs insist they’ll vote for the campaign that would put an ad like that out. Funny, that.

changer1701 on August 7, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Oh please – Willard was the consummate “carpet bomber” of negative ads – even untruthful ones during the primaries.

This ad from Ogabe’s SuperPac is below the belt – but it wouldn’t be the least bit effective if Willy and his campaign would actually “pretend” for five seconds that Ogabe is actually Rick Perry.

Cuz if Rick Perry had put out this kind of ad against Willard – there would have been a “throw down” from Willard’s campaign.

But when the “one” is involved – all you’ll hear is whimpering.

Which ain’t gonna win Willy any votes.

HondaV65 on August 7, 2012 at 5:31 PM

this is the very similiar to the despicable ad that Dewhurst ran against Cruz, and sealed his fate…

I was in Chicago when The One worked there. I got a paper cut on my finger. Twenty two days later, my finger fell off. I wonder if The One knows the impact his inaction caused. My wife points at me. My friends laugh behind my back. The shame never ends, and he sits there in his WHITE house, with that smug smile. I want to cry.

Liar! I mean, except for the part about Romney carpet bombing his conservative rivals with negative advertising as untruthful as it was effective. So, I guess that I mean that you’re telling the truth with a lying heart because to say anything about Romney is to support Obama or something like that.

Reality check for Joe Septic:

By accepting a janitorial job that did not provide health insurance after the steel mills shut down, and continuing to stay in that job instead of seeking a position with better benefits, you are responsible for your wife’s death. By not finding a second job, you killed your wife. If you ever drank a beer or smoked a cigarette during your years as a janitor instead of buying health insurance, you killed your wife. And if the only two jobs you are capable of performing are steel worker or janitor, then your wife didn’t die because Mitt Romney fired her, she died because she married you.

Lawdawg86 on August 7, 2012 at 5:38 PM

Filthy ad. I hope the president loses in epic fashion this November to prove that his disgusting Chicago Politics doesn’t work in the rest of the country.

ellifint on August 7, 2012 at 5:38 PM

THIS is nothing….. wait until October… these loons will sacrifice everything and anyone to get this fraud re-elected.

and the media played on…………..

And it wouldn’t surprise me one bit that if this fraud really sinks to new lows in desepration, his organization creates a “Reichstag” event as a self-made crisis of which to take advantage.

and the media eats it up……

She died because she had cancer…there is no reason to believe she would not have died no matter who her husband had worked for…or for that matter if she was married to him at all. Even a guy like Steven Jobs can die of cancer.

Terrye on August 7, 2012 at 5:43 PM

I don’t feel sorry for this guy. He is using his dead wife as a prop in a campaign commercial. He takes no responsibility for his own life, and he just wants someone, somewhere to give him some free stuff. I am really through with all these sob stories.

And that is before I find out that the commercial is completely inaccurate, and Mitt Romney has had nothing to do with this guy’s life, ever.

Epic commercial fail.

bitsy on August 7, 2012 at 5:43 PM

So if any Solyndra Employees or those under their insurance pass away within the next 5 years it’s Obama’s fault? How about all those who lost their jobs at GM dealers who were shut down?

weaselyone on August 7, 2012 at 5:44 PM

I have to say, though, it’s a comfort to me to know that Hopenchange will be well and truly shattered come November, no matter what happens on election day. Even if he pulls it out, after a campaign like this the idea that he and his team represent some sort of new, more exalted form of politics will be fully exposed for the joke that it is. His second term won’t be better, but at least people won’t be kidding themselves anymore, if any still are. There’s some small consolation in that.

AP, I wish I had your faith in the average person. I also wish that you are rewarded for that one day.

I also hope you are right. :)

AZCoyote on August 7, 2012 at 5:20 PM

No, it is not easy to get around those rules. I work for a health care agency. Some states have easier rules than others, but you do not just get medicaid because you have low income..they do take into account your assets..that is why so many older people sign over their property to their children. That way Granny can get medicaid when she goes to the nursing home.

Truth is, this lady got cancer and died. There is no reason to believe that it would have made any difference if she even had insurance. She was not refused treatment..she just did not know what she had until it was too late. It happens all the time.

Keep it up Dear Leader. You and your campaign are starting to self-caricature.

Didn’t you know you already had all of the stupid vote you are likely to ever get before you turned your campaign into a cartoon? So what’s getting the your plan for getting the non-union, non-socialist, non-hopelessly liberal over 80 IQ vote?
