Obama’s sleaziest ad yet: Romney kinda sorta killed a man’s wife by closing down his steel plant

posted at 4:01 pm on August 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

Please, spare me the objection that this comes from The One’s Super PAC, not his formal campaign, and therefore it’s technically not an “Obama ad.” That excuse never flew for Romney when his own Super PAC was carpet-bombing Gingrich and Santorum in the primaries. The wall of separation between a campaign and its PAC is all but invisible to the naked eye. If you think it’s easy for the White House to get Harry Reid to smear Romney over his tax returns, imagine how easy it must be for them to get former White House spokesman and current Priorities USA honcho Bill Burton to fling feces like this.

They won’t attack him for being Mormon (I hope), so calling him a murderer will have to do:

The pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action lobbed a heavy-duty attack at Mitt Romney this morning, airing an ad that links the closure of a GST Steel plant in Kansas City to the loss of a family’s health insurance — and the death of a woman some time later…

In the case of this particularly jarring super PAC ad, it may also be relevant that Soptic’s wife died in 2006, years after the GST factory closed down

I asked Priorities USA strategist Bill Burton to explain the connection between Romney, Bain and a cancer fatality that happened near the end of Romney’s tenure as governor of Massachusetts. The lapse in time between the plant closing and Soptic’s death doesn’t mean the ad is invalid, but it raises questions about the cause and effect relationship here.

“We’re illustrating how long it took for communities and individuals to recover from the closing of these businesses,” Burton responded. “Families and individuals had to find new jobs, new sources of health insurance and a way to make up for the pensions they lost. Mitt Romney has had an enduring impact on the lives of thousands of men and women and for many of them, that impact has been devastating.”

Romney stopped doing work for Bain in 1999; the steel plant in question here closed down in 2001; Soptic’s wife passed away in 2006; and yet, Romney’s somehow culpable. Perfection. You know what’s really interesting about this spot? It’s not even a health-care ad. It’d be sleazy under any circumstances, but there’d at least be a concrete policy angle if Burton was selling it as an argument for, say, single-payer, to decouple insurance from employment. He’s not. There appears to be no actual policy argument here at all, unless The One now opposes layoffs on principle, for fear that someone somewhere might be left without insurance. Is that where our very pro-business president — seriously, just ask him — is now at? As John Sexton says, does this mean O himself is on the hook until 2014 for any deaths that resulted from GM dealerships being closed in 2009? I thought workers bore some responsibility to find a new job with insurance after they’re laid off, but if he wants to take the blame for human tragedies at Government Motors, fine by me.

I have to say, though, it’s a comfort to me to know that Hopenchange will be well and truly shattered come November, no matter what happens on election day. Even if he pulls it out, after a campaign like this the idea that he and his team represent some sort of new, more exalted form of politics will be fully exposed for the joke that it is. His second term won’t be better, but at least people won’t be kidding themselves anymore, if any still are. There’s some small consolation in that.

“We’re illustrating how far we are willing to plunge morally and truthfully to get Obama elected,” Burton responded. “Seriously, we have nothing to run on so we literally have to make bottom-feeding, gutter-crawling s**t up.”

There, I fixed Burton’s quote to say what he was actually thinking.

You’re a funny dude, AP. There are people still out there who are pushing the narrative that Obama is some sort of pragmatic bipartisan who bends over backwards to cater to Congressional Republicans despite 3 1/2 years of evidence to the contrary. You think he wouldn’t continue to get a pass in a 2nd term even if his only path to victory is one of the sleaziest, dirtiest campaigns we’ve ever seen?

Former employee at closed auto dealership dies; Obama implicated in death

BobMbx on August 7, 2012 at 4:09 PM

Former steel worker Joe Soptic has resurfaced in a new pro-Obama Super-PAC ad, blaming Romney for his wife’s death from cancer.
“I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he’s done to anyone,” Soptic says in the ad. “And furthermore I do not think Mitt Romney is concerned.”

But Soptic is actually a familiar face on the anti-Bain beat, and accused Romney of this before.

Soptic was featured in an Obama ad in May, who explained that although he wasn’t “rich” he was able to put his daughter through college.

In January, Soptic complained to Democracy Now, a liberal non-profit TV station, that when the steel company he worked for was bought out by Bain, they tried to buy out his job… Source

Flora Duh on August 7, 2012 at 4:09 PM

So after that steel plant was closed, did some former employee become a dad ? A mom? A grandparent ?
Can those happy moments be attributed to Bain too ?

Haha, The Boss Emeritus today:

But if memory serves, the “rich” people Robin Hood took from were public officials who were wealthy because they were corrupt and stole from the people they were supposed to be serving. To say Robin Hood “took from the rich and gave to the poor” is about as accurate as Kevin Coster’s accent in the 1991 movie of the same name. Brave Sir Robin didn’t redistribute the wealth, but rather returned to people what government had stolen from them. “Robin Hood in reverse” would be the Sheriff of Nottingham, and apparently right now there’s only room for one sheriff in this town.

Brilliant, and spot on.

WH Won’t Condemn Ad Accusing Romney of Killing Woman

REPORTER: Priorities Super PAC has an ad out today that features a man who worked at a Steel plant that closed in 2001, this was after it was acquired by Bain Capital and the implication is that Mitt Romney bears responsibility for the death of this man’s wife because he lost his insurance when the plant closed in 2001 and in 2006 his wife, who was uninsured at the time, died of cancer. I’m wondering if the President believes Mitt Romney shares responsibility in her death?

President Barack Hussein Obama is already directly responsible for at least TWO U.S. federal agent MURDERS as well as the MURDERS of HUNDREDS of Mexican citizens WHILE he was — and still IS — in the Oval Office. Not before. Not after. DURING!

Not to mention the FACT that President Barack Hussein Obama is the holder of the OFFICIAL U.S. KILL LIST and has already personally ordered the MURDER of US citizens in ASSASSINATIONS in foreign countries — WITHOUT due CONSTITUTIONALLY GUARANTEED process of any kind WHATSOEVER.

But HOLD THE PRESSES! Mitt Romney left a company 2 years before that company closed another company down and a further 7 years after Mitt Romney had left that company A WOMAN DIED FROM CANCER!

DAMN YOU MITT ROMNEY — YOU PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE MURDERER!

Un-freakin’-real.

I have looked everywhere for the names of the 200 Mexicans killed by Fast and Furious.

Does anyone know the names? They should be published. Their names and their pictures. And pictures of their families.

This ad is so stupid it is unbelievable.

Ta111 on August 7, 2012 at 4:25 PM

It’s aimed at low IQ voters. In other words, O’bama’s Base.

“Vote for Obooba or Romney will kill a puppy!”

Team Mitt(bot) had better get in the game. This is the type of thing conservatives knew would be thrown at him in the campaign. Mitt Romney and his campaign has not done a good job addressing the nonsense coming from the left.

More importantly, Team Mitt has not done a good job putting Obama on Defense on a consistent basis. This is not looking good. I’m not being overly pessimistic. I am being objective on this.

Let’s make no mistake, this ad could be devestating.

All Romney has to do is stay on message and he wins in a landslide.

I am trying to keep up…thus far Romney is a tax cheat, a felon and a murderer…what is next? Child molester? White slaver?

Worse… capitalist.

Were Obamacare in effect, the guy would have been hounded to death and fined for not having insurance instead. That would have been so much better.

whatcat on August 7, 2012 at 4:40 PM

As John Sexton says, does this mean O himself is on the hook until 2014 for any deaths that resulted from GM dealerships being closed in 2009? I thought workers bore some responsibility to find a new job with insurance after they’re laid off, but if he wants to take the blame for human tragedies at Government Motors, fine by me.

Don’t forget the Delphi workers or family members who have died of cancer due to Obama.

Someone needs to investigate this guy. I would bet dollars to doughnuts at least some of his story is just false.

Doomberg on August 7, 2012 at 4:28 PM

I am sorry about his wife’s loss and know first hand what it’s like to watch a loved one suffer with cancer. But he’s been in 2 pro-Obama ads. I wonder if any money was offered to Mr. Soptic for performing his trained seal act patriotic duty?
