Jay Carney: I don’t speak for Harry Reid, but Romney sure could resolve this by releasing those tax returns, huh?

posted at 10:04 pm on August 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via the Washington Free Beacon, why on earth is the White House press secretary wading into a dispute related to the presidential race? I’m sure GOP press secretaries have done that too for Republican incumbents but I don’t like it from either party. Carney’s supposed to be a liaison between the president and the media so that the public can stay informed about what’s going on with the executive branch. The only questions he should be fielding vis-a-vis Romney are when Team Mitt makes a charge about the administration’s policies that requires fact checking. The One’s paying Ben LaBolt for a reason, right? Let him be the one to navel-gaze on camera about the proper way for Romney to respond to Reid’s low-rent smear, not a guy who’s ostensibly some sort of public servant tasked with providing citizens with basic facts.

As for why Romney hasn’t yet released the returns, does anyone believe this?

Mitt Romney and his aides believe that — despite loud and nagging calls for him to release his tax returns — the candidate simply cannot afford to release his taxes now, even as some aides wish he would have put them out six months ago or more.

With less than three months to election day, the Romney campaign has passed the “point of no return,” as one Republican operative close to the campaign put it, beyond which there isn’t enough time for the media to digest the tax returns before the public starts to pay attention to the race.

“The complaining for more and more returns and the stories about how rich he is get old after a few weeks, but there aren’t a few weeks left,” the operative said. “Now we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing and hope it isn’t too painful.”

If he put them out now, the press would spend two weeks buzzing about them and then everyone’s focus would shift to the conventions. In the meantime, Romney would have announced his VP pick and there would be new jerky little distractions to keep the media busy. By the time of the debates, when voters are really tuned in, no one would care anymore. Unless there really is something damaging in there that he’s hiding, the suspicions he’s creating by not releasing them are probably hurting him worse than releasing would. But I don’t know; maybe the dynamics of this now are such that if he produces the returns, he’ll be seen as “giving in” to Democratic pressure and some conservative voters will be mad at him. Just seems hard to understand why he’d let this be a liability if the truth is that it isn’t one.

If I were Romney I wouldn’t give out the returns until right after the election, if he wins. You see what they’re doing with worthless material like this “steel worker” stooge in Kansas City. There’s nothing there, but they are accusing Romney of murder. Regarding that story, the right has given up even trying to show that Romney wasn’t at Bain Capital when GST Steel went under.

Imagine what they’ll do with his taxes.

All they can do now is speculate, and Romney can call them liars and demand that they release their withheld documents. The easiest way to deal with this is to not give them additional material to lie about.

Look at what they did with the horse.

Let’s see how important it is for the Democrats to protect the weasel. It’s in their court.

Buddahpundit on August 7, 2012 at 10:24 PM

AllahP,

A couple of reasons why he won’t release, and shouldn’t release ten years of tax returns:

First off, Bain was a partnership. His taxes were tied into the business taxes. As a private equity firm, they pay the price of higher taxes to keep the public from knowing how the money is being spent. There is no reason that he should show how his former company is doing business to its competitors.

Second, he is a religious man. He donates to his church, and takes a deduction for that. But if he releases the tax filings, the headlines will read “ZOMG! Romney gives ELEVENTY MILLION DOLLARS to weird cult!!!!!one!!!1!!!” Furthermore, just like the stupidity that Sheldon Adelson is going through (“OMG! Hookers were in his hotel!”) there will be something like “OMG! People watch PR0N on Marriot TVs!”

Third, do you honestly think that 10 years would be enough for the Alphabets? If they don’t find enough to make him regret running, they will demand he release 20 years…then 30. Best to not to pay the Danegeld, for you are never rid of the Dane.

Finally, two years of tax returns is the standard. (Yes, Mitt’s dad released ten years, but maybe he was brainwashed into doing that…) Yes, PBO released three years, but you also tend to release things like school transcripts and medical records to the public, which PBO has not done.

MunDane68 on August 7, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Wow, the white house is a bunch of idiots.

First off, if I remember correctly the Romney campaign HAS released data on how much Romney has paid for taxes for the previous ten years. Not the tax returns themselves, but thats reasonable compelling evidence that he’s on the up and up.

Second, the WH press secretary JUST repeated a line of reasoning that even LIBERAL members of the press have deemed despicable. After spending yesterday trying to distance themselves from the line of attack, playing footsie with it is just dumb.

Third, the ONLY thing keeping Obama in the game at all at this point is his personal likability. Every time the White House plays with these tactics they risk killing that advantage. Polling data already suggests that his likability has fallen off somewhat already, so if the same tactics continue eating into his likability it won’t be long before he’s dead in the water.

Not that I’d complain if that happened, mind you. It’s just stupid that they’d be willing to take that sort of risk. It reeks of desperation, which means they must have plenty of reason to be desperate.

WolvenOne on August 7, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Romney’s tax returns would probably fill a good size truck, and every day there would be the revelation of some trivial detail revealed as the greatest example of tax fraud in history. But they could probably release copies of the checks Romney made to the IRS.

I don’t know how many millions Mitt has paid in taxes but I suspect the number could support our sides argument Rich people pay more than their fair share and corruptocrats like Obama waste most of it.

halfbaked on August 7, 2012 at 10:25 PM

mark81150 on August 7, 2012 at 10:26 PM

Seems like a loser no matter what Romney does. If he releases more, they’ll want different ones, or more of them. And whatever he releases will be picked apart ad nauseam in the quest for ever more distractions. If he stands pat, they continue to harangue him on it.

I just hope that the convention provides a means to get the word out about Mitt’s extreme generosity…which is completely at odds with the picture being painted by Obama’s campaign. Anyone familiar with Mitt’s life knows that he has a big heart, and that he’s not motivated by greed. The things they accuse him of just don’t square with what we know about him.

Dee2008 on August 7, 2012 at 10:26 PM

A guy was on Hannity who said he went to school at the same time Obama did in the same department Obama granduated from. He does not remember Obama at all. He said the only way Obama could have gotten into the schools he did, as a dope smoking loser, was to be a foreign exchange student. That is why Obama has spent 4 million to keep his records sealed. Tax returns, my a$$. I want to see Obama’s college transcripts. I’ll bet Obama is a fraud and nothing he has signed as President is lawful. Fraud at this level is treason.

I think this is understandable actually. Axelrod has a chop shop piecing garbage together for Bain which is then shoved over David Corn’s transom at Mother Jones. Why hand them thousands of pages of tax returns to do with as they please? We’ve seen how readily the media takes their bait.

If I were on Team Romney I would take a handful of reporters next time some kid shows up at a rally with a sign – “Show us your taxes Mitt,” and stick that kid with the reporters and a roomful of tax returns. Let the kid peruse through them while the media gets their fill. They’ll come out and report he paid 15% or whatever but Axe doesn’t get a mountain of papers to twist into lies and distortions.

ghostwriter on August 7, 2012 at 10:41 PM

there isn’t enough time for the media to digest the tax returns before the public starts to pay attention to the race.

Oh, please. Is anyone in the media well versed in tax policy? No. They would pick something and make an issue out of it that neither they or the public would understand. Romney has produced his 2010 returns and an estimate of his 2012 tax liability as reported by WaPo. They only want fodder to continue to prop up their idol, BO.

How did Romney survive this sort of scrutiny when running for Gov. of Mass.? Probably because there isn’t much there to discuss. It’s all the Dems have left.

I’m sick of this discussion.

If they want to play games, I say call it short and call BO’s bluff as discussed earlier today. BO won’t release college records, and Romney shouldn’t release any more of his tax returns than promised. Just do something to end this stupid distraction.

Force the Dems to find something else to scream about.

The thing about the tax issue (as well as the Soptico ad) is that the Obama folks can’t seem to find any dirt on Romney. Everything that they’ve thrown at him so far is so contrived, that I have a hard time imagining that it is persuading anybody.

Since Obama’s given up actually governing, Carney has nothing else to talk about.

Bitter Clinger on August 7, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Got a point there. Obama does not make decisions, except to follow or delay following a decision that has been made for him. Now he is not even there to do that now that he is flying out almost every morning and flying back in late at night, then doing it again. Jay is a bit at a lose when he can not talk about the decision of the ones that are really doing the work.

Anyone notice that Michelle is not running around wiht him. She might be head cook now with the decisions, probably always has been, but Jay cannot say anything about what she thinks. Poor guy, what is he to do…hang out in Harry’s office, oh yeah! they are both democrate and they all parrot the same things to make it sound legitimate, so he can do that over and over again.

Franklyn on August 7, 2012 at 10:45 PM

The longer this goes on, the more Romney could make it work in his favor, if he had the guts.

Most of the people in this country know that the media is liberal and unfair.

Romney could put out ads showing the number of “news” stories about his tax returns and compare those to the number of stories about the rising unemployment rate last month and to the number of stories about rising gas prices. Then he could show examples of them calling him a felon for his FTC filings, a murderer for closing a steel plant when he wasn’t even running Bain Capital, attacking his wife for having a horse, etc…

He could show that Obama has taken no steps to reduce unemployment, has taken no steps to reduce gas prices.

He could show that Obama and the media don’t care about the well-being of the people of the United States. They only care about smearing Romney so they can get reelected. He could show that Obama operates in a cesspool, and has been his entire time in office.

If he has the guts.

If he has the guts. Because he’s not going to win by letting the left control the message. Romney has to go on the offensive.

jaime on August 7, 2012 at 10:48 PM

Jay Carney: I don’t speak for Harry Reid, but Romney sure could resolve this by releasing those tax returns, huh?

.
After reading your latest Eeyorism post, AP just one image comes to mind:

The scene from The wizard of Oz where the witch skywrites:

Surrender Dorothy

I have a clear mental picture of you, AP, pushing Dorothy out of the Emerald City, slamming the door and saying,

“Well, at last we can have some peace!”

Why don’t you save us all the trouble of listening to your endless rationalizations of why the Republican Presidential nominee should do EVERYTHING the Democratic Presidential nominee or his surrogates can dream up.

DEFECT NOW, AP – Obama has your heart and soul – just come out and admit it, resign and leave Erika to write her usual intelligent and insightful posts.

Carney is a hack but at least he is an honest, out-in-the-open hack.

You, AP, are nothing but a Eeyoring moby.

When is Obama going to prove that he’s not incompetent?

Chip on August 7, 2012 at 10:42 PM

Never.

Self-actualization is impossible when one stares into a mirror and there is no reflection.

Cody1991 on August 7, 2012 at 10:55 PM

Hopefully Mitt will use the convention to address all of this nonsense, where he will have the platform and control the message. He’s been called a murderer, a deadbeat tax cheat, a misogynist, an animal abuser, a bully, and anything else Barry and Co. could fabricate and sling, to no avail.

Mitt’s surrogates have done a good enough job on offense, as the poll numbers reflect, but Mitt needs to get on the podium and lambaste Obama as a liar and slanderer – in addition to being the worst president evah.

Philly on August 7, 2012 at 10:55 PM

For once the Chicago street thug is being subtle in his escape, to let even such a staunch ally like Reid be thrown under the Obama (Canadian-built) bus.

Give it time…

Liam on August 7, 2012 at 10:56 PM

. But I don’t know; maybe the dynamics of this now are such that if he produces the returns, he’ll be seen as “giving in” to Democratic pressure and some conservative voters will be mad at him. Just seems hard to understand why he’d let this be a liability if the truth is that it isn’t one.

It won’t matter what the truth is..the truth has nothing to do with it..there will be wild accusations, lies, innuendo and Romney will have to bring out an army of tax accountants to talk above everyone’s heads.

RELEASE THE COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS!

John the Libertarian on August 7, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Amen. We need to spread this meme everywhere. I see Trump has picked it up, and I read an article somewhere yesterday that was calling for the same thing. Release the college transcripts! We talk about tax returns later.

smellthecoffee on August 7, 2012 at 11:02 PM

I have this vision of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and a few staffers sitting in an office strategizing about how best to smear Romney. Pelosi says to the trusted aide sitting next to her “Tell Harry that Romney hasn’t paid his taxes in 10 years.” The aide dutifully does so, they all laugh and Harry goes off to start the story. Nancy is then free to assert as fact that someone told Harry that Mitt hadn’t paid his taxes.

arnold ziffel on August 7, 2012 at 10:58 PM

Yeah, it really surprises me sometimes that the Republicans lay down and take this kind of treatment. They put a lot of money and effort into running, you’d think they’d do what it takes to win. In this case, I think Romney has to attack to win.

FlaMurph on August 7, 2012 at 11:09 PM

Unless there really is something damaging in there that he’s hiding, the suspicions he’s creating by not releasing them are probably hurting him worse than releasing would.

Just seems hard to understand why he’d let this be a liability if the truth is that it isn’t one.

I am starting to think the same thing. I don’t believe for a moment that Romney broke the law, but I suspect that there is something that worries Romney in those returns.

Jay Carney says thank you both. As does Dr. Goebbels from below.

Del Dolemonte on August 7, 2012 at 11:09 PM

This is all a crock. I was in high school when JFK was elected. Other than a few mutterings about how his old man earned his money as a bootlegger, there was nothing made about his taxes or his inherited wealth.

Oh, I forgot. The Kennedys are Democrats.
