Jay Carney: I don’t speak for Harry Reid, but Romney sure could resolve this by releasing those tax returns, huh?

posted at 10:04 pm on August 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via the Washington Free Beacon, why on earth is the White House press secretary wading into a dispute related to the presidential race? I’m sure GOP press secretaries have done that too for Republican incumbents but I don’t like it from either party. Carney’s supposed to be a liaison between the president and the media so that the public can stay informed about what’s going on with the executive branch. The only questions he should be fielding vis-a-vis Romney are when Team Mitt makes a charge about the administration’s policies that requires fact checking. The One’s paying Ben LaBolt for a reason, right? Let him be the one to navel-gaze on camera about the proper way for Romney to respond to Reid’s low-rent smear, not a guy who’s ostensibly some sort of public servant tasked with providing citizens with basic facts.

As for why Romney hasn’t yet released the returns, does anyone believe this?

Mitt Romney and his aides believe that — despite loud and nagging calls for him to release his tax returns — the candidate simply cannot afford to release his taxes now, even as some aides wish he would have put them out six months ago or more.

With less than three months to election day, the Romney campaign has passed the “point of no return,” as one Republican operative close to the campaign put it, beyond which there isn’t enough time for the media to digest the tax returns before the public starts to pay attention to the race.

“The complaining for more and more returns and the stories about how rich he is get old after a few weeks, but there aren’t a few weeks left,” the operative said. “Now we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing and hope it isn’t too painful.”

If he put them out now, the press would spend two weeks buzzing about them and then everyone’s focus would shift to the conventions. In the meantime, Romney would have announced his VP pick and there would be new jerky little distractions to keep the media busy. By the time of the debates, when voters are really tuned in, no one would care anymore. Unless there really is something damaging in there that he’s hiding, the suspicions he’s creating by not releasing them are probably hurting him worse than releasing would. But I don’t know; maybe the dynamics of this now are such that if he produces the returns, he’ll be seen as “giving in” to Democratic pressure and some conservative voters will be mad at him. Just seems hard to understand why he’d let this be a liability if the truth is that it isn’t one.

I’m sure Allahpundit wants us to win, but he has a responsibility to write with some dispassion. Some. AP is being analytical. I don’t agree with a word of it, but he has to analyze it and put it out there for a million people to read (no exaggeration).

This is the question that needs to be put to Carney: “If Mitch McConnell stood up in front of the Senate and said the president was a lousy student and probably applied as a foreign exchange student and challenged Obama to prove him wrong, would the president also not have an opinion on the matter?”

The Count on August 7, 2012 at 11:17 PM

I can understand Allah’s point, and I would agree with it if we were dealing with decent people..but the Obama campaign is not decent…we have seen Romney called a felon, a liar, a tax cheat and a murderer. If they got hold of thousands of pages of tax returns with the names of partners and details about business dealings…we know they would lie about it…every day would be a new allegation, a new ad..it would not stop.

At the very least, Romney needs to get something out of it other than a lot of aggravation.

He did the full financial disclosure forms, which have a lot of detail and two years of returns. That is quite a lot of information right there.

.
Which is why my opening statement was:

“After reading your latest Eeyorism post …”

which was why I referenced the title to be very clear I was taking exception to his entire post on the subject.

His best efforts only rise up to the level of a milque toast voice for the conservative cause when he stays on topic, applies his intellect to achieve some unique insight on a current political issue without straying into RINO unicorn land.

Back when he prejudged the three Navy SEALS in Iraq – I stopped coming here for more than a month because the disgust I felt for that article was so great. (Especially loved him second guessing their decision to go to court martial /s)

When AP is in full Eeyore mode his content is much worse, as he is in this post for my money, where he does nothing but give credence to the sleaze Reid and Carney are peddling rather than calling it the worst aspects of American politics and then leaving it to stink on its own merits.

I will obey the rules of the site but so far as I know that does not mean when one of the staff posts something vile it has to be treated with kid gloves.

PolAgnostic on August 7, 2012 at 11:41 PM

He has tripled down on the tax returns issue, I think he’s in too deep to release them now. The smart thing would have been to release five years of returns when he came under pressure during the primaries, then he could have touted that he released more than twice as much as John Kerry. But the establishment GOP media cocooned Romney from the tax demands from Newt and Santorum, and here we are now.

Lawdawg86 on August 7, 2012 at 11:42 PM

Nothing is resolved by releasing the returns except the Democrats and their owned-and-operated MSM get a big anti-fat cat hammer to swing around. Let them twist. The American public is not clamoring for the release of these returns. Most Americans understand the desire to keep them private because they wouldn’t want theirs made public. Only the Democrat leadeerhip and their paid flunkies are clamoring. That tells you something. It’s all they got. And if the returns have not been releaed by the debates you can count on the Choomster-in-Chief to bring them up. Loser.

The left is using these tax returns to deflect talk from any of the important matters; i.e. Iran, the economy, energy, etc.

It seems that many of the conservative pundits, when asked about the tax returns, just want to hear themselves talk. They should all have one response to any question about tax returns:

“Instead of tax returns, let’s talk about something substantive like the economy”

Sure, the left will accuse them of trying to hide from the issue, but hell, they’re doing that anyway. And at least this way, every time the viewer hears “tax returns”, they’ll also hear “Let’s talk about the economy”.

But noooooo; we just keep following the left’s playbook.

jaime on August 7, 2012 at 11:14 PM

Please see my response to hopeful. In a nutshell, AP has no need to be analytical.

Analysis is what the LSM peddles. It is the reason there are still people passionately opposed to Obama who believe he will win regardless because the media is constantly analyzing everything, justifying EVERYTHING his administration and their cohorts do.

The “average voter’s reaction” has passed anger and is moving into despair and rage

As to the solution for the current situation?

Easy, “scorched earth” attacks on not just Reid or Carney or Obama but the Washington establishment (Bernanke & Geithner should get special attention) and the crony capitalists who put up nearly one billion in 2008 campaign funding and have never faced any consequences (this is Romney’s “Sistah Soulja” opportunity).

Chris Christie should be targeted at Reid and the other sleaze merchants. No one can embody genuine disgust and outrage with the same passion and effectiveness of the NJ governor.

The conservative members of the Fourth Estate need to round on their fellow talking heads with ridicule, derision and the timeless, “Have you NO shame?”

Romney should verbally hit back at ANY questions regarding the DEMOCRATIC nominees talking points by pointigt out the individual’s attempt to distract from the REAL problems created by an incompetent and pandering administration.

If AP wants to do something USEFUL that might influence people?

Document Harry Reid’s corruption and finish with, ” … so Harry NEEDS Oboma reelected so he can stay just as dirty as he has always been.”

Hint: Reid has ties to organized crime through the unions. The stories have been written and published. Wouldn’t that be a thousand times more useful than this piece of crap post we are discussing?

This could all be cleared up quickly by simply releasing all the records! Obama’s college applications, scholarships, travel records, passport, birth certificate, job history and client lists, social security numbers, Selective Service records, tax and real estate records, medical records and drug history, security clearances, all financial transactions for 10 years back, and 20 years of tax returns!! If he has nothing to hide why wouldn’t he do this?? I think we know why!!

CherryBombsBigBrownBeaver on August 7, 2012 at 10:08 PM

If Mitt would say that. It would be amusing to watch what they do next.

Mitt has his records done by a team of accountants and I think it is safe to say he is not looking for ways to make them cheat for him. Unlike Obama who has a condition known as a habitual liar syndrom, Mitt seems to be more honest than Obama. And there is that well known democrat trait of accusing the other side or what you are doing and hoping some of the poo sticks to the republicans when it lands on them, so they don’t look so bad.

But really, is that an even trade, hardly. Obama has so much more to hide than Mitt has in all his tax records from his first job untl now. Just ask yourself, if Obama was not allowed to run for office by Michelle until he paid off a few thousand dollars of debr from the failed run for office, is she going to let him spend millions to hide a few embarassing grades? Just look at her face and you can answer that. Now the problem is either a boy named Barry Soetoro from Indonesia or as with every other record on him and his mother, they don’t exist or if they do, they are toxic to him and everyone that knows the truth about them. In which case, he is not going to be allowed to release anything, end of the story.

Obama will have to come up with the next big lie (truth in Obamaland) to distract us middle class government workers and servants.

Franklyn on August 8, 2012 at 12:32 AM

Breitbart Reporter in Indonesia Has Proof Obama is Indonesian Citizen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TH0qQI7jXCE

Joe Pagliato Interviews Wayne Allen Root who has raised the issue of Obama’s college records and so forth. Makes a $1 million dollar bet with Joe Pagliarulo that if Romney challenges Obama, Obama will back down.

During the interview Root says he got a phone call at 4:00 am the other night from an investigative reporter working for Breitbart.com who says that he has absolute proof that:

- At the time Obama was living in Indonesia you could not go to Indonesian public school as an American citizen,

- Obama was adopted by Soreto,

- Obama became an Indonesian citizen.

Does Romney have the guts to challenge Obama as Root suggests in the interview and put an end to this nonsense?

No one cares about Obama’s school records, it is not the same thing. They just do not care..taxes are about money and that is much more interesting to people.

A challenge like that would not really help Romney anyway. I think he is concerned about the fact that they can distort and lie about all sorts of things in his taxes because they are very complicated. He also did a lot of business in partnerships and so there would be names of other people in there as well..and they are not running for President.

Terrye on August 8, 2012 at 6:42 AM

Obeying the insane demands of the enemy will not make the matter go away. It is far better to release the customary two years and tell DWS to shut the hell up. Nicely of course. Must not upset the poodle too much.

I agree completely. Allah claims that if there is nothing in these returns, Romney should just release them and let the press chatter about it until the VP nominee is named and the convention season starts. But that just isn’t the reality. The media and their partners in the DNC would go line by line and demand Romeny respond to every deduction, expense, etc. They would keep bringing up that Bain money. In short they would try to make Romney into a tax cheat even if everything was completely legal.

I don’t get how anybody who wants to see Romney win would fall for the idea that just releasing stuff at the demand of the enemy would end well. And, BTW, just how is releasing 23 years of tax returns going to change anybody’s opinion. Maybe one of the idiots bleating that Romney should obey the demands of Harry Reid can field that one!

It is highly unlikely that there is any “there” there with Mitt Romney’s tax returns, as far as the IRS is concerned, and that is what matters. The Service is not going to let someone with many millions of dollars NOT pay what is lawfully required.

If the Left does not like the fact that the tax code provides many opportunities to legally reduce what is owed they can support comprehensive tax reform.

The President’s campaign is attempting to score cheap political points because they have no defensible record on which to run. They know it and the Romney campaign knows it as well.

But I don’t know; maybe the dynamics of this now are such that if he produces the returns, he’ll be seen as “giving in” to Democratic pressure and some conservative voters will be mad at him.

Honestly, that’s how I see it at this point. I’m sick of campaigns pulling this BS into forcing their opponents to change the topic for them by bringing up some baseless accusation and making them defend it.

All of this was true when Birthers were going on and on about Obama’s birth place, and yet his campaign repeatedly dismissed the idea that they needed to release the document that they eventually released anyway.

So let Mitt release all of his tax returns in 2015 or whenever the next primaries start heating up. Or if he’s ready to get rid of this line of questioning, just don’t release them for nothing. Get Obama’s grades or the Fast and Furious documents in return.
