CNN: Wife of steelworker in new Obama Super PAC ad still had job and health insurance after he lost his

posted at 9:20 pm on August 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

I wonder if Bill Burton and crew knew about this and greenlit the smear anyway or if they didn’t care enough to even find out. Why would they? The point of calling Romney a murderer is to keep him on the defensive; the more ridiculous the charge is, the more media/online oxygen it sucks up and the less air there is for Mitt’s own attacks on O to breathe. They tried a straightforward offensive against Romney’s complex private equity record a few months ago but the results were inconclusive. Now they’re trying again with a bolder, simpler narrative: Romney’s layoffs literally killed people. If you’re a low-information voter who pays attention to this stuff in bits and pieces, a story you’re half-listening to about a rich guy and a steelworker and a plant closing and a young wife tragically dying from cancer sounds really bad, even if it’s a gross smear. In fact, the grosser the smear, the more compelling the half-listened-to story seems. Right, Harry?

Question: Knowing what we know now about the timeline of all this, what’s left of the accusation in the original smear ad? What is it, precisely, that Bain is being faulted for doing or not doing? They shouldn’t have closed down the plant because … it was unfair to expect the workers who were laid off to ever find new jobs with insurance? It was negligent not to predict that some workers’ wives might get laid off too and wouldn’t find a new job for years before they became ill? There appears to be no actual policy or business critique here. It’s just a string of events spread over five whole years, with certain key data omitted, and you’re supposed to infer causation without really being told why or how. This is what the Unicorn Prince has come to after promising four years ago to heal America or whatever. Perfect.

so mitt hops in a time machine in 1999 at bain capital zooms forward to close down the guys plant and then quantum leaps 6 years forward with brief intervals in between to make sure the cancer was not found while the woman had insurance of her own by bribing the doctor?

Oh they knew, don’t misunderestimate that those at high levels don’t know the real facts. But that doesn’t mean they won’t play fast and loose with the facts — or discard them entirely in order to create a false narrative, making their opponents respond to such garbage rather than creating a real alternative. Truth does not matter to Marxists.

BTW, gas is now $3.80+ here in Toledo.

The plant was losing money. It couldn’t compete in the world market. It needed to close.

The former employee’s former insurance wouldn’t have saved his wife. It would have paid the bill but it would not have saved her.

There is no standard screening for lung cancer. The majority of cases are diagnosed serendipitously, or very late.

By the time she started having symptoms of losing weight, it was too late.

I don’t know what kind of lung cancer she developed, or whether she was a lifelong non-smoker (in which case she would never have been screened) or a former or current smoker. But lung cancer is very deadly, even today generally discovered late. I’m sorry for her death and his loss, but Romney is the last person to blame for it.

I’m all for health care insurance and HSA’s decoupled from employment – tax benefits and credits that go to employers can go to individuals who choose their own coverage.

Sarah, my mother died of cancer..she had an aneurysm and survived it, but she was blind and could not speak..she had seizures..she went into a nursing facility. She also had COPD…she saw a nurse every day. She had blood draws almost every day..and yet they did not diagnose her lung cancer until 2 weeks before her death.

..tangential request: please come over to QOTD some evening and regale us with the derivation of that sobriquet? I get carpal tunnel syndrome just reading it!

:-D

Barry gets away with this stuff because he’s so “likable”. Which only goes to show that the media can get the masses to like just about anyone if they put their mind it. Personally, I despised him from day one.

Soptic is a loser.

jaime on August 7, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Indeed…this’ll get out to the brain dead O’Zero faithful…

Blasphemy!!!

BigWyo on August 7, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Maybe this is that “new thinking” that the resigning CNN president was talking about.

JPeterman on August 7, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Maybe, Terrye. I guess it depends on how bad this horrid lying ad is taken to task, with its imprimatur of, “I am Barack Obama and I approve this message.”

If it gets to hot for Obama, Soptin might well need to stay away from buses coming his way.

Liam on August 7, 2012 at 9:51 PM

The ad was put out by Obama’s Super PAC. Therefore, there is no “I am Barack Obama and I approve this message.”

Bitter Clinger on August 7, 2012 at 9:54 PM

i had some sympathy naturally for this man no matter how irrational and screwed up his blame game was but now i have none whatsoever. he’s not some hapless pawn he’s nothing but a tool. a lying pucking tool. these people are ghouls.

everyday i think- how much more reprehensible can the fawning Barryettes get . and every day it’s even worse. the general idea is not that romney is a rich old white exploitative capitalist- the typical marxist ranting. it’s the extremes- he’s a felon,- look he’s a killer!

just what is in barry’s past that required such a vast left wing cone of silence and such severe and unrestrained projection involving not only felonious law breaking but the taking of human life?

Sarah, my mother died of cancer..

Terrye on August 7, 2012 at 9:53 PM

..God bless your mom and God bless you, Terrye. Brave ladies, both. I sincerely hope that she and you are at peace now.

The War Planner on August 7, 2012 at 9:55 PM

NEWS FLASH FOR ROMNEY CAMPAIGN!!!!

Unanswered ads like this are effective, don’t fight them and feel the consequences.

Do what McCain didn’t do.

FIGHT!!!!!

PappyD61 on August 7, 2012 at 9:52 PM

Romney did say it was nonsense today..but give him 24 hours..and btw, ads like this will not be all that effective, if even CNN is not buying it..in truth they might actually backfire. It can happen that way.

I will be there to tonight. I’ll give you a hint, though. I talk about the $5.95 ribeye steak lunch special at the local strip club a lot.
Call me a walking advertisement for, uh, tips.

CherryBombsBigBrownBeaver on August 7, 2012 at 9:57 PM

Bitter Clinger on August 7, 2012 at 9:54 PM

But it’s still pro-Obama and anti-Romney and that will stick. People had political ads anyway – this has to turn some stomachs.

I wonder how long until they pull it.
