Romney/RNC raise $101.3 million in July

posted at 8:41 am on August 6, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Momentum has not slacked for Mitt Romney and the RNC during the traditionally slow summer period.  For the second straight month, the two combined to raise more than $100 million for the general election:

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign announced Monday that they had raised $101.3 million dollars in July.

The fundraising haul, from joint efforts between Team Romney and the Republican National Committee (RNC), marks the second straight month that they have passed the $100 million mark and is likely to intensify concerns among President Obama’s reelection team that they will be outpaced by the GOP’s fundraising push.

The July efforts leave the Romney campaign in strong shape with three months left until Election Day. The campaign, RNC and state party groups have $185.9 million cash on hand, said a statement touting the war chest.

A statement from Team Romney gave the breakdowns:

  • Over $101.3 Million Raised In July
  • 94.13% Of All Donations Received In July Were $250 Or Less
  • $25.7 Million Raised By Donations Under $250 In July
  • 600,627 Donations Received Under $250 In July
  • Approximately $185.9 Million Cash On Hand
  • Contributions Received From All 50 States And Washington, D.C.

I wonder how much of that came from DC?  I’d guess less than 1/51st.

The $101.3 million total is slightly less than June’s $106 million haul, but that may reflect the lighter schedule around the Independence Day holiday, which fell on a Wednesday this year.  It still outstrips Barack Obama’s fundraising from June by $30 million, and likely July, too.  We’ll get a better idea of that later, perhaps this week, and perhaps once again in another desperation e-mail. Team Obama was already more than $20 million down on cash-on-hand after June’s numbers, and with their burn rate, even a showing of fund-raising parity in July would probably put them further behind the eight-ball.

That amount of campaign donations will get the Dems talking points more animated in the coming days – demands that Romney publish his tax returns from the age of 12 onward.

If old Harry and Obama are afraid Mitt Romney took advantage of tax loop holes (which both of them use), then they could spend some of the time they have on their hands reforming the tax code.

Besides, I’m sure if a Republican like Romney owed back taxes, the libs would have the IRS all over him demanding payment.

iamsaved on August 6, 2012 at 8:56 AM

This is why it’s out now that Obama dislikes (aka hates) Romney. For the first time in his life, Obama’s afraid he might actually lose. I’d love to see those internal Democrat polls and not the phony push-polls put out by the NYTimes and the MSM.

Follow up …..

think about it. the other side has already fired its best ammunition … and it’s all lame class warfare crap (tax returns, Cayman Isands, etc.). what else are they going to hit Mitt on but other similar lame b.s.

but as for Mitt (and even moreso for the superPACS), think about it. There hasn’t really been anything on energy yet, and that’s a gold mine (prices would necessarily rise, problem with gas prices is that they went up too quickly, keystoe, etc). superPACS will probably use “bitter clingers” in ket battleground states. a superPAC could do a great “gaffe” ad if the dems want to keep pushing that. another great ad is simply a series of promises obama has not followed through on. we have tons to go on, and apparently a lot of money to do it with

darkegop on August 6, 2012 at 9:03 AM

I get that Romney can’t spend his money until he’s formally nominated, but whay aren’t the Superpacs spending now? Why can’t they be blitzing the swing states? A few well placed anti-Dinghy Harry ads would be helpful about now.

BettyRuth on August 6, 2012 at 9:04 AM

Obama just put out that one ad showing him contributing online. (How pathetic.) I think Obama will need to schedule a Labor Day telethon where he can get a bunch of Julias and Julios from the freeloader class to give testimonials.

My guess is that the networks would preempt college football programming and give him free or discounted airtime (if permitted) to accomodate him.

SomeCallMeJohn on August 6, 2012 at 9:13 AM

On the heels of the Olympics, I hope the ads Romney rolls out highlight him as a turnaround specialist–from Bain and the Winter Olympics. I think that’ll get fence-sitting swing voters saying, “Screw the fact that he’s loaded. The guy understands the economy, and he’s got a track record as a turnaround specialist. Meanwhile, Obama was taking nothing but Multicultural Studies courses in college and law school, and he’s spent virtually no time in the private sector since getting out of school. Indeed, his book says he views the private sector as the enemy.”

The Olympics are over on the 12th. I expect we will probably know the identity of the running mate within 48 hours of that. The last substantive question Obama took from a White House reporter was during a June 20 press conference following the G20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico. Obama allowed only six questions during the event, which was nearly guaranteed to keep him out of political hot water as the focus was on foreign policy.

Since then, Obama has held no press conferences, given no interviews to White House reporters, and taken no questions at the White House events he has held where reporters have been present.

taternuggets on August 6, 2012 at 9:12 AM

First, the money we are talking about is Romney and RNC money, not just “Romney” money. The RNC has less limits on what it can spend now (before Romney is official nominee at the convention) and as far as the “Romney” money goes, it isn’t that *none* of that money can be spent yet, it is that *most* of that money can’t be spent until he is the nominee. Second, campaigns have overhead costs — staff salaries, travel expenses, rent for campaign headquarters in various states, electricity, internet service, etc. Those bills come due every month for a campaign just like they do for the rest of us and that’s before you even get into ads (which is the biggest restriction on the money, btw, which is also why an incumbent POTUS has such a huge advantage over the challenger). Overhead expenses, however, is one of Obama’s biggest problems & why he is burning through so much money so fast — he has huge overhead costs, in no small part due to his bloated staff (700 I think) in the Chicago HQ sitting around on their 20-something butts “data mining” on computers.

I’m proud to be one of the small June & July Romney donors. And I plan to be one again every month until the election.

Fallon on August 6, 2012 at 10:27 AM

The MSM will LOVE this news. 90+% of that money will flow right into their pockets. Always remember that the media’s consistent source of revenue is political campaigns. Ask any media sales rep, local or national and they will tell you that ad agencies who represent campaigns are a cash-cow. Naturally the more contentious they can make each contest, the more ad revenue they generate. Makes me nauseous to think that my donation goes to a bonus for some media hack who actively works against my views and beliefs, but it is the system we are stuck with.

SphericMojo on August 6, 2012 at 10:29 AM

BTW, this story reports that no presidential campaign has ever raised more than $100 million two months in a row. Which is good for Romney, no doubt but how long have we *really* been raising that kind of money in campaigns in the first place. I’d have to go back to look (and I don’t feel like doing that) but take the “first time 2 months in a row raising over $100 million” with a grain of salt, FWIW, etc.

A little early in the morning to be smoking bowls of crack that big, isn’t it?

The funny thing is that not one liberal is smart enough to realize that Romney cannot spend most of that money yet. I just read the Huffington Post link up top, and liberals basically think:

1. Romney is down in every poll.
2. Obama’s message is working.
3. Romney will get crushed.
4. Harry Reid is the smartest man alive.

That is quite frankly deslusional. Obama is barely up in skewed polls, at a time when an incumbant should be up. Romney has not gotten the bounce from the Republican National Covnention (almost certain to be between 4 and 7 points, at least), from the VP pick, and the debates. And he has not even started spending most of his money yet, because he is prohibited from doing so.

Once the playing field evens in a few weeks, which coincidentally occurs once it has been historically proven that most people start even listening to stuff about the election, not only will Obama’s “lead” disappear, but he will be down rather quickly.

Anyone who is being honest, and that should include Nate Silver, whose model doesn’t seem to factor reality (which I guess works in baseball, but not in politics), knows that trying to gauge a race against a sitting president in early August is stupid. The challenger almost always gains big after the Convention, and the debates (unless he tanks), and independents almost always break for the challenger (for both, there has been only a handful of exceptions in the last 60 years).

So, it we are being honest, Obama is probably up by a point, at most nationally, and 2-3 in the swing states. But, if we are being even more honest, a sitting President should be up by a lot more. For a sitting President to not be up by 7+ overall at this juncture overall (he should be exceeding his 2008 total), and by 4-7 in the swing states, shows that Obama is in deep trouble, despite liberals pretending that he isn’t.

Yep. Romney hasn’t really started to campaign yet. Obama isn’t even moving the needle. Every attack angle they have tried (15 YEARS of tax returns?) has fallen flat. They have to scrape the bottom of the barrel and have the corrupt Harry Reid sling unsubstantiated derision on him that has made Reid a laughingstock nationally.

Hey, if you have a few spare bucks, you might want to drop a few dollars to the California Republican Committee. They’re in bad shape and to some extent deservedly so, but we need to keep the organization alive. They are looking at having to close their Sacramento office.

I’ve been all over Virgina for the last few days and I can tell you Mitt and Republican TV spots have been numerous.

I suggest you all just get out of there as quick as you can. California seems like a lost cause.

Ugh.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows President Obama attracting 47% of the vote, while Mitt Romney earns support from 45%
