Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on August 6, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

One might think that Barack Obama would have learned his lesson from the “you didn’t build that” blowback.  He handed Mitt Romney a powerful attack by claiming that small businesses owed their success to government, and that entrepreneurs had nothing to do with the infrastructure that government provides — despite the fact that government only has the capital to build that infrastructure because entrepreneurs risk their own capital to create and expand markets, provide jobs, and raise the tax base.  Obama reacted by griping about being taken out of context, and then claiming that he always gives entrepreneurs the credit for their success.

Even after all that, Obama wants to find some anecdotes to push his argument that government should get credit for private-sector success (via Doug Powers at the Boss Emeritus’ place):

When growth is 1.5% and joblessness is 8.3% only because millions of people have dropped out of the work force for despair of finding employment, anecdotes are all Obama will be able to offer.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

That’s the thing with this crew. They want a lot of credit while accepting none of the responsibility. They want to take credit for a road when they’ve never held a shovel. The “you should be thanking me” crew needs a sharp dose of reality.

A few months ago, I saw a movie with Sidney Poitier called “The Bricklayer.” It was a great story about an old school bricklayer and a spoiled-brat, self-absorbed kid who needed a kick in the pants from reality. Over the course of a summer, Poitier trains the kid to make bricks the old-fashioned way—by hand. The kid finally realizes the value of hard work, respect, and grows up.

There are several amongst us that could use such lessons.

Ed, I’m increasingly convinced that Mitt’s use of “you didn’t build that” has been the impetus behind Harry Reid’s rodentian, unsubstantiated and subterranean attacks on Mr. Romney by Reid is merely being used to suck all of the oxygen out of the room and disarm further attacks on the economy by Romney’s campaign. The attacks need to be parried and redirected. The Obama campaign is in a corner and they send out their top snake to lash out.

ted c on August 6, 2012 at 8:14 AM

Here is a success story for you to post, Barry. Word is out that this ex-con, who is a contributor to Barry’s campaign, is a solid example as a beneficiary of Barry’s policy. He got a small business loan through his White House contact, and used it to set up a child porn website. It is doing gang-buster business: Harry Reid and his friends bought lifetime subscriptions.

We’ve also started a sideline in used office furniture. As businesses shut down we swoop in and buy up their furniture and sell it to people who can’t afford their utility bills to use as firewood. Can anyone explain why http://www.bls.gov/web/empsit/cpseea01.htm shows a LOSS of 195,000 employed, while http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t17.htm shows a GAIN of 163,000?

—–

Table A-1 shows that the seasonally adjusted “Number Employed in the Civilian labor force” FELL by 195,000 from June to July (from 142,415,000 down to 142,220,000).

Table B-1 shows that the seasonally adjusted “Total Employees on nonfarm payrolls” ROSE by 163,000 from June to July (from 133,082,000 up to 133,245,000).

He’s kidding, right? Because of his policies we laid off 20 people and have yet to replace them. Because of his policies we have ceased spending money on anything but necessities.

When I started this business 25 years ago, I had $5,000.00. It didn’t come from the government, it came from my savings. It was all of my savings.

What Obama has helped me do is realize that success can be punished, that money earned can be taken away on a whim, that humility is a virtue and he’s helped me realize that I can feel hate, and for the first time in my life, I feel racism.

If he wants to call that succeeding, more power to him. Bless his heart he has finally succeeded.

Obama supporters couldn’t tell you the difference between a for-profit entity and a nonprofit entity.

As a result, my guess is that half of the positive responses will come from nonprofits that have reaped grant money from Obama to promote this nonsensical sustainable initiative or that nonsensical sustainable initiative. The other half of the positive responses will come from for-profit business owners that are somehow making a go of it by deriving revenue from sectors heavily subsidized by the Obama administration.
