Cohen: Harry Reid is exactly what’s wrong with Washington; Update: WH distancing itself from Reid?

posted at 1:11 pm on August 6, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier today, I noted that George Will had ripped Harry Reid for his baseless accusations of tax evasion thrown at Mitt Romney, even from the Senate floor, calling it “McCarthyism from the desert.”  Will is a conservative commentator, of course, so it’s perhaps unsurprising to see him aggressively attacking Reid.  What do liberal commentators think of Harry Reid?  Richard Cohen is Will’s colleague at the Washington Post, and Cohen leaps to Reid’s defense*:

For Reid, this is yet another brazen and tasteless partisan attack. As majority leader, he has managed to sink the public image of the Senate even lower than it would otherwise be. He contributes to bad feelings, gridlock and the sense — nay, the reality — that everything is done for political advantage. Reid is a crass man, the very personification of the gaudy and kitschy Las Vegas Strip.

Still, he is not some backbencher, but the Senate majority leader. He is the face of the Democratic Party in the Senate and the ally of President Obama. Yet, not a single Democrat has had the spine to rebuke Reid. The White House has been given the chance and explicitly ducked its duty. Other members of the Senate have run for cover. They fear Reid and, if truth be told, sort of like what he’s doing — constantly needling Romney, keeping him on the defensive about taxes and his insistence on releasing only two years of his returns. …

When Reid accuses the Republicans of being overly partisan, he now lacks all credibility. For a long time it’s been difficult to believe anything he says. Now, it’s impossible.

D’oh! Looks like a consensus is forming about Reid’s ethics and politics, which is that they both stink to high heaven.  Still, not everyone is on board with this opinion.  Reid’s counterpart in the House Democratic caucus insisted to the Huffington Post that Reid has told the truth … about having a conversation:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) fired back at Republicans accusing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) of lying about a Bain Capital investor telling him that Mitt Romney hadn’t paid taxes in 10 years. They don’t know what they’re talking about, Pelosi says.

“Harry Reid made a statement that is true. Somebody told him. It is a fact,” Pelosi told The Huffington Post in a Sunday interview. “Whether he did or not can easily be disposed of: Mitt Romney can release his tax returns and show whether he paid taxes.”

Cohen has an answer for this as well:

It could be that someone did indeed tell Reid that Romney paid no taxes for 10 years. Journalists get that sort of tip all the time, and their responsibility is (1) to check it out and (2) identify the source. Reid has not done the latter and apparently has not done the former, either. The truth is that Reid doesn’t really care if the charge is true or not.

Responsibility.  Cohen’s right, of course, but is that a word that a Senate Majority Leader who has gone more than a thousand days without passing a budget would heed?  That’s what is wrong with the Senate, along with Harry Reid himself, and what’s wrong with Democratic leadership in general who have enabled Reid’s McCarthyism either though overt support as Pelosi has done, or tacitly with their silence.

Update: Looks like the White House has begun to think that this might be a loser — at least if it has Barack Obama’s fingerprints on it:

The White House on Monday distanced President Obama from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s comments that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney hasn’t paid taxes in a decade.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said on Monday that Reid “speaks for himself” and had spoken on the issue without any guidance from Team Obama.

“He certainly speaks for himself,” Carney said, adding that Obama hasn’t expressed an opinion on Reid’s recent comments.

That’s not exactly a denunciation, either. It is a hint that the scorching criticism from the Sunday talk shows, including Bob Schieffer’s comparison to Joe McCarthy on CBS, might have the West Wing worried.

Update II (*): I was being sarcastic about Cohen riding to Reid’s defense.  Obviously, he’s doing anything but defending Reid.  A few readers were confused at my sarcasm, so consider this a clarification.

Good on Mr. Cohen. It speaks volumes.

The politics of this squabble are delightful. But Reid has managed to draw both his party and his president into the gutter with him.

Obama is the Chief Rat in the Latrine. Reid is his Capo.

When Reid accuses the Republicans of being overly partisan, he now lacks all credibility. For a long time it’s been difficult to believe anything he says. Now, it’s impossible.

As for Obama, he is tarnished by this episode. The fresh new face that promised us all a different kind of politics is suddenly looking cheesy. The soaring rhetoric that Obama used in his first campaign has come to ground in the mud of Harry Reid’s latter-day McCarthyism.

Good on Frank Bruni too. They are two Ds with some semblance of substance left…not to speak of decency.

Obama is a degenerate and has dragged the WH and the land into the latrine with him. Throw them out or join the stench.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said on Monday that Reid “speaks for himself” and had spoken on the issue without any guidance from Team Obama.

The Democratic Party is a team. When they want to (most of the time), they speak in perfect harmonic unison with the precise same talking points at the precise same time in a coordinated assault.

So to think that suddenly one of them is going wildcat, during a carefully scripted campaign, is simply not believable.

Reid was assigned Attack Dog duty. He was told up front, “We wlll deny any connection to what you are saying.” It’s all part of the strategy.

But I think the American public sees through this charade.

Typical. I have no doubt that Obama put Reid up to this. IT may SEEM that Obama is tossing Reid under the bus regarding the backlash on this particular bit of vilification, but I suspect this has been the operating plan from the inception.

Team Obama couldn’t find one shred of dirt to hang on Romney. Romney has kept the focus on the economy and jobs, hence, Obama’s dismal record and ineptitude. Romney has refused to name his choice for VP pick, so they couldn’t use that avenue of attack to try and shift the focus OFF of Obama’s abysmal record and the equally abysmal state of the economy. Desperation dictated they devise and implement this tax smear to attack Romney with their class warfare campaign.

Reid makes these charges, Obama ‘distances himself’ from making these unsubstantiated, unsupported, and despicable allegations which were obviously a crude attempt to smear Romney’s reputation, Reid refuses to recant, maintaining that he believes his ‘source’, all the while refusing to name any source.

This is just one more instance that reveals how willing Obama and his surrogates are to use thuggery and employ the vilest of tactics to smear anyone who challenges them. This smear is rank slander. That it was made from the well of the Senate on tax payers time makes it an issue for the Congressional Ethics Committee.

thatsafactjack on August 6, 2012 at 1:33 PM

When Reid accuses the Republicans of being overly partisan, he now lacks all credibility.

The disingenuous and transparently wrong accusations by the hyper-partisan leftists against the GOP (who weren’t even allowed in discussions for most of the criminal legislation that Barky and his lunatic leftist junta forced through) were always beyond ridiculous. The fact that anyone ever let the Indonesian Dog-Eater (the most hyper-partisan of all) get away with it just went to the utter decay and rot of the MFM. Reid, and the rest of the America-hating dems have lacked all credibility for a few years, now. In fact, since they took over Congress back in 2007 they have done little but lie, abuse their power, drive America into the abyss and engage in unfair, nasty, primitive tactics that only totally brain dead morons would take seriously. Obviously, the MFM did their best to push these brain-dead arguments as they shilled for the Indonesian and the death of America.

For a long time it’s been difficult to believe anything he says. Now, it’s impossible.

It’s been “impossible” for a long, long time. The guy has refused to even allow a serious budget to be voted on for YEARS. One of Congress’ only actual jobs and Hairy Reed, alleged pedophile, has gone out of his way to stop this Congress from doing it for YEARS!

We have reached and passed a critical mass of insane leftists in this country a while ago. No society can exist very long with such a large percentage of self-hating, nihilistic idiots in the population, let alone holding the levers of power. The disease is, indeed, fatal.

I disagree. The jug-eared Kenyan is so damned stupid what would a bunch of college transcripts prove other than the fact that Obama wasn’t much of a student. His college thesis on the other hand…..

But what I think really went on here is that they thought they knew the GOP playbook after 2008. They throw out some outrageous story supported by the media and they expected the Romney campaign to rush out all sorts of tax returns to disprove the charges being leveled by Harry Reid. Which of course would also give the enemy three months to sift through the Romney’s income and attack every single deduction under the guise of “Romney is a rich guy” theme.

Oh Gawd. I just got this mental image of Reid and Mitt on a playground, chest to chest…

“Release the taxes”
“Pass a budget”
“No. Release the taxes.”
“No. Pass a budget.”

SailorMark on August 6, 2012 at 1:48 PM

The White House has discovered that their trained attack dog is a small child.

Harry, hit the ball Harry. Hit the ball! Good job, Harry! Good boy!

No… no… NO! Harry, DON’T hit the boy who caught the ball! STOP!

Poor widdle Harry did a good job following Barry and Nanzi’s orders on day one of this debacle. He just forgot to keep his mouth shut on days 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Alberta_Patriot on August 6, 2012 at 1:48 PM

Piglosi and Reid both need a mental exam, if this isn’t dementia I don’t know what is………

Yeah, 8.3% unemployment, negative job growth for 42 months, a commie in the White House surrounded by like-minded anti-American traitors, criminals and thugs. And you think people really care about Mitt Romney’s tax return. Bless your heart.

Happy Nomad on August 6, 2012 at 1:39 PM

But, but there’s that horse they own too. They’re filthy rich, don’t ya know? And let’s find out if Romney cut anybody else’s hair too.

Ann Coulter really nailed the Obama Chicago-Way strategy.

If Obama is now “distancing” himself and even thinking about under-busing Dingy Harry, it shows they’re afraid of the backlash.

Drained Brain on August 6, 2012 at 1:49 PM

I think, all political partisanship put aside, it is safe to say that Nancy Pelosi is NOT an intelligent person. That said, at least she doesn’t say much that could damage her party; normally it’s just empty rambling and mindless affirmations. In that regard, she’s better for the Democratic party than Obama, who normally “steps it in” when he speaks extemporaneously.

Glenn Jericho on August 6, 2012 at 1:50 PM

As for Obama, he is tarnished by this episode. The fresh new face that promised us all a different kind of politics is suddenly looking cheesy

suddenly?

welcome to the party pal

cmsinaz on August 6, 2012 at 1:50 PM

Distancing itself… sure now that it is a stinker… we had no idea he was doing this… just like the dog story, the bully story, etc. I just more and more disgusted with this WH.

I was watching the news this morning and some democratic operative was going on and on about this and how important it is to see this and so easy to take care of… why oh why oh why doesn’t someone bring up his grades in college? if so important to see how much moola and taxes Romney has paid, how about how supposingly smart our President is, to me that is way more important than how much money a private citizen has made due to his being good at his job…

Just so disgusted by this stuff…. my best friend is a democrat and she beleives this crap.. it is impossible to get out of her head this junk, although she does admit she probably won’t vote for him again. Her reasoning has always been that her parents are democrats so she is and she votes that way… I guess the fact she is rethinking this should make me feel better, but it doesn’t.

Cicero43 on August 6, 2012 at 1:39 PM

Yep. Sick good ole Harry on’em with so much as a click of the tongue, no one even noticed the command. And Harry being the old whore house dog he is always blind sides, instinctively to bite Mitt in the short ones from behind. What better way for Barry to clear out the defenses so he can kick him there from the front.
And the press, like a referee from the WWF days keeps looking the other way, giving Mitt the 3 count warnings.
Only wrestling was believable.

Happy Nomad on August 6, 2012 at 1:36 PM

Maybe. But then I’d have to give ‘em credit for thinking things through. I cannot do that.
This is more like the “silver spoon” attack of a few months ago that went so wrong for Obama.
The Dems simply have no respect for the general populace. In their minds we are too dumb to consider what they say.
Really, a guy who has NEVER released HIS tax returns, calling for someone else who has, too release more ?
That alone halts the argument.

THIS

cmsinaz on August 6, 2012 at 1:54 PM

All Reid is saying is that someone said Romney didn’t pay taxes for 10 years. Thats the fact Harry and Nancy are standing behind, not that Romney didn’t pay taxes.

BobMbx on August 6, 2012 at 1:28 PM

7th graders are more sophisticated than this kind of tactic.

This is more akin to dressing prisoners up in Polish army uniforms and making the claim that Warsaw decided to attack. This is more akin to declaring overwhelming success in the latest five year plan from Moscow. This is more akin to the “disappearing” of whole families in some South American nation.

In short, this is nothing more than the tactic of street thugs.

d1carter on August 6, 2012 at 1:54 PM

The Obama Campaign got away with this dtuff in Chicago, but as President, he is on a different stage. It appears from these self-inflicted wounds by BHO, Reid, Axelrod and all the surrogates, we may be seeing death by a thousand cuts.In another 6-8 weeks it will be more evident that this is a one termer administration.

Fixed, for all in today’s Democrat Party who would trade the Bill of Right, for a check from Uncle Sugar Daddy.

MNHawk on August 6, 2012 at 1:55 PM

Hey Harry, how does it feel getting used and then thrown under the bus by Obama when the brainstrorm blows up in your face? Enjoy your little twist in the wind. Could not happen to a nicer guy.

xrayiiis on August 6, 2012 at 1:55 PM

The Democrats are in so much election trouble that lies are all they have left to run on. Isn’t it funny that Prlosi knows Reid “had a conversation.” I wonder how she knows that; was Pelosi present at the “conversation?” It is also funny that for two weeks Axelgreasyrod had been calling for Romney to release more tax returns and then magically Reid has a “conversation” about Romney’s tax returns, or lack of tax returns, or something. Also interesting the Democrats think that all you need do to refute totally made up acuzations is to prove you’re not guilty by doing what they have been calling for you to do for weeks. Isn’t it funny how all of this fits right into the Democrats dirty politics. What definitely is not funny is how the LSM pushes and covers for the Democrat lies.

aposematic on August 6, 2012 at 1:56 PM

Of course Obama approved of Dirty Harry’s lying campaign against Romney. There is no level that Obama won’t stoop to to be reelected.

Many Americans want to see Obama’s records and what he has been hiding.

jqc1970 on August 6, 2012 at 2:01 PM

That’s what is wrong with the Senate, along with Harry Reid himself, and what’s wrong with Democratic leadership in general who have enabled Reid’s McCarthyism either though overt support as Pelosi has done, or tacitly with their silence.

Quoting someone else is one thing, but perpetuating the smear, and twice in one day… Ed, you’re being a “useful idiot” perpetuating the liberal hatchet job on Joe McCarthy.

CapnObvious on August 6, 2012 at 2:02 PM

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said on Monday that Reid “speaks for himself” and had spoken on the issue without any guidance from Team Obama.

I love the smell of bull*hit in the morning!
