Cohen: Harry Reid is exactly what’s wrong with Washington; Update: WH distancing itself from Reid?

posted at 1:11 pm on August 6, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier today, I noted that George Will had ripped Harry Reid for his baseless accusations of tax evasion thrown at Mitt Romney, even from the Senate floor, calling it “McCarthyism from the desert.”  Will is a conservative commentator, of course, so it’s perhaps unsurprising to see him aggressively attacking Reid.  What do liberal commentators think of Harry Reid?  Richard Cohen is Will’s colleague at the Washington Post, and Cohen leaps to Reid’s defense*:

For Reid, this is yet another brazen and tasteless partisan attack. As majority leader, he has managed to sink the public image of the Senate even lower than it would otherwise be. He contributes to bad feelings, gridlock and the sense — nay, the reality — that everything is done for political advantage. Reid is a crass man, the very personification of the gaudy and kitschy Las Vegas Strip.

Still, he is not some backbencher, but the Senate majority leader. He is the face of the Democratic Party in the Senate and the ally of President Obama. Yet, not a single Democrat has had the spine to rebuke Reid. The White House has been given the chance and explicitly ducked its duty. Other members of the Senate have run for cover. They fear Reid and, if truth be told, sort of like what he’s doing — constantly needling Romney, keeping him on the defensive about taxes and his insistence on releasing only two years of his returns. …

When Reid accuses the Republicans of being overly partisan, he now lacks all credibility. For a long time it’s been difficult to believe anything he says. Now, it’s impossible.

D’oh! Looks like a consensus is forming about Reid’s ethics and politics, which is that they both stink to high heaven.  Still, not everyone is on board with this opinion.  Reid’s counterpart in the House Democratic caucus insisted to the Huffington Post that Reid has told the truth … about having a conversation:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) fired back at Republicans accusing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) of lying about a Bain Capital investor telling him that Mitt Romney hadn’t paid taxes in 10 years. They don’t know what they’re talking about, Pelosi says.

“Harry Reid made a statement that is true. Somebody told him. It is a fact,” Pelosi told The Huffington Post in a Sunday interview. “Whether he did or not can easily be disposed of: Mitt Romney can release his tax returns and show whether he paid taxes.”

Cohen has an answer for this as well:

It could be that someone did indeed tell Reid that Romney paid no taxes for 10 years. Journalists get that sort of tip all the time, and their responsibility is (1) to check it out and (2) identify the source. Reid has not done the latter and apparently has not done the former, either. The truth is that Reid doesn’t really care if the charge is true or not.

Responsibility.  Cohen’s right, of course, but is that a word that a Senate Majority Leader who has gone more than a thousand days without passing a budget would heed?  That’s what is wrong with the Senate, along with Harry Reid himself, and what’s wrong with Democratic leadership in general who have enabled Reid’s McCarthyism either though overt support as Pelosi has done, or tacitly with their silence.

Update: Looks like the White House has begun to think that this might be a loser — at least if it has Barack Obama’s fingerprints on it:

The White House on Monday distanced President Obama from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s comments that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney hasn’t paid taxes in a decade.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said on Monday that Reid “speaks for himself” and had spoken on the issue without any guidance from Team Obama.

“He certainly speaks for himself,” Carney said, adding that Obama hasn’t expressed an opinion on Reid’s recent comments.

That’s not exactly a denunciation, either. It is a hint that the scorching criticism from the Sunday talk shows, including Bob Schieffer’s comparison to Joe McCarthy on CBS, might have the West Wing worried.

Update II (*): I was being sarcastic about Cohen riding to Reid’s defense.  Obviously, he’s doing anything but defending Reid.  A few readers were confused at my sarcasm, so consider this a clarification.

how true. . .every day that mittens doesn’t release his tax returns sinks his credibility with the American people even more (if that’s possible)!

Pragmatic on August 6, 2012 at 1:30 PM

Yeah, ‘cuz everyone knows that the American people are more concerned about 23 years of Mitt Romney’s tax returns than they are about the FACT that the US economy lost 1.2 million jobs in July and, at the rate Obamanomics is going, it will be 2025 before we return to Bush-era employment rates.

Never mind the fact that McCain only released 2 years of returns and no one complained.

Most importantly, we know for a FACT that Reid and his “informer” are lying because Romney HAS paid taxes in the last 10 years:

Romney paid $3,009,766 in Federal income taxes in 2010.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/documents/romney-2010-tax-return.html

He paid $3,226,623 in Federal income taxes in 2011.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/documents/romney-2011-estimated-1040.html

Further, the whole “investor” thing is ludicrous, too. What investor is privy to the individual tax returns or lack thereof of the ownership of an investment firm … especially when the alleged tax evader hasn’t been involved in the management of the company for more than a decade?

I’ve owned stock in Apple, Microsoft, GE, etc. Guess what? I’ve never been privy to the individual tax returns of any of the investors, members of the Board or management.

Lastly, after Reid made his accusation, the Salon.com writer Alex Seitz-Wald consulted several tax attorneys about its theoretical plausibility and determined that it was “nothing short of ludicrous.”

Even if Romney did not pay taxes for 10 years, he still had to have filed a tax return. Now, if he in fact did not owe taxes, BFD, he was only following the US Tax Code much of which has been written by a Democrat controlled Congress. Who doesn’t try to pay as little tax as possible? Especially as we all know that much of what we do pay, is squandered on programs that enrich the chosen few and pay off selected groups for their vote. Solution? Fair Tax Now!!!!

Just how much sense does this libel make anyway. A former investor says he knows Romney did not pay taxes for ten years. Since Romney left Bain in 2001, presumably we must be talking about 1990 to 2000. So how does this equate with Romney not paying taxes the last decade? Because that is what Reid said.

I am not sure where you guys got the $3million+ in taxes paid by Romney in 2010. My source is he paid $6.2 million in taxes and gave another $7 million to charity. I am pretty sure he also donated some blood on top of all that. Just the $6.2 million represents over 15 years of what ‘O’ paid this year and it is about 31 years of Reid’s salary in the Senate. Fair Share, how much is fair. I hope this bites reid in the arse.

Since they can’t find any real dirt on Romney, his family, or his business dealings they are making stuff up out of whole cloth. They are putting it out there to try to convince the stupid half of America that voted for Obama last time to do it again. This is why they want Mitt’s tax returns. That would have required Strickland to be honest, as opposed to being a loyal Democrat. We Ohioans fired him as Governor two years ago for that sort of thing.

Although I strongly suspect that even with high-speed rail, Mark Dann and then Richard Cordray as State AG, Jennifer “Miiss” Brunner as SecState, and Lee Fisher as Lt. Governor, Strickland and his Chicago-style Mafia in Columbus might still have survived if he hadn’t promised “to do everything within my power to re-elect President Obama”.

He’s doing just that, but at least he no longer has the resources of the State of Ohio to do it with.

Can’t you just visualize the shyster-marketer Axelrod rubbing his hands together gleefully in his Chicago campaign office, congratulating himself on another “surefire” way to turn the masses against the rich guy Romney? The strategy has FAIL all over it.

Romney’s income taxes, assuredly pored over by the IRS through the years, do nothing to affect the taxation burden of middle-class citizens, contrary to what Pelosi is spouting. Many of them, too, invest and make capital gains. We can be certain that these middle-class folks do not want to see their capital-gains taxes escalating.

All that Romney and the rest of the Republicans have to do is to demonstrate via dollars how the middle class will be socked with higher taxes once the Dems’ plans kick into gear. The issue is not just the expiration of the Bush tax rates but every gross and latent tax that will be imposed in the coming year and beyond.

So my question is whether any reporter or member of the media who has been in a position to put the question to the President has asked him why he felt it necessary to lock down all the personal history and information (including college transcripts, application forms etc…). It’s ridiculous in the face of comments from Gibbs, Reid and the rest of the gang that couldn’t smear straight that this giant donkey in the room isn’t being addressed in the same air time as Mitt’s tax non-issue.

CitizenEgg on August 6, 2012 at 5:51 PM

Reid is nacrophilic.

Schadenfreude on August 6, 2012 at 1:18 PM

..wa-a-a-a-a-y late to the dance one his one (med appointment this AM to up my BP meds) but it’s NECrophiliac. A NACrophiliac is a person who makes love to dead nick-nacks, I think.

Or would that be a NICrophiliac?

The War Planner on August 6, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Of course the pure-as-driven-snow Barry would want people to think that he has nothing to do with the slimy slander.

..track record..chugga..chugga..choo..choo..track record..track record..chugga..choo..choo..

Connect the dots: outed divorce records, etc. etc.

If we can make that connection, then the folks — everyone except the mouth-breathing, mirror-dogging bleading-heart peace-creep pro union thuggists — will get it.

The War Planner on August 6, 2012 at 5:56 PM

mirror-dogging == mirror-fogging, of course!

The War Planner on August 6, 2012 at 5:57 PM

I really believe that the reason the left hates Joe McCarthy so much is, because he once said “If liberals were merely stupid, the laws of probably would dictate that at least some of their decisions would serve America’s interest.” That truely exposed people like Dingy Harry, for what they really are. Businessmen like Romney, with diversified portfolios are usually targets for the IRS, while big mouthed politicians are exempted, even if their dealings are questionable. And a lot of Reid’s dealings smell to the high heavens.

savage24 on August 6, 2012 at 6:15 PM

This is the perfect example of “there is no honor amongst thieves.” In fact there is no honor amongst politicians. They use one another and if it don’t work the way they want, they throw each other to the wolves. Not a very honorable profession is it? Might it not be better if we randomly picked our politicians from the phonebook, we might at least pick some honorable men.

savage24 on August 6, 2012 at 6:31 PM

Dingy Harry’s brazen lies are another epic fail by the White House in their attempt to attack Mitt and change the narrative away from the economy and national debt crisis. The fiscal cliff looms.

This was the most stupid and classless of them all, and that is saying a lot seeing that we are dealing with a pack of shameless Chicago criminals. What a coincidence that Harry laid this egg just before the unemployment rate ticked upward. Hmmm….

Call the movers, Barry. I think you will be relocating to Chicago in January.

Just look at those two stooges and to think they are the leaders of their party. FOMSU.

Looks like Democrats plan on distancing themselves from Duh Won at the convention. If you need a few extra bucks, you could be a seat-filler at the Bank of America stadium.

Harry is a good solider, He will say anything no matter how absurd it is to float whatever trial balloons Obama want’s floated, Harry does not care what people say about him, he is Obama’s man through and through..

RockyJ. on August 6, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Politico reported that Reid did this with WH explicit approval. He needs to hang this around Obama’s neck.

Little dingy hairy doesn’t move without obama pulling the strings. Of course 0b0z0 is behind it!
BTW, I think his tax returns are sitting on obozo’s desk, but it would be a federal crime for them to release the info without Romney releasing it.
Romney is ethical and honorable and he paid all his taxes – unlike the admin or those lying cheats – dingy and pelousi.

Which “readers were confused at my sarcasm” ?

The newer, lower class of trolls Axeholerod must have had to resort to the scouring of grade schools to find?

It is past time to make Reid a figure of public contempt.

Romney’s only response should be: We don’t negotiate with terrorists.

Yes, I did go there!

Reid doesn’t take a dump without Team Obama approval.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said on Monday that Reid “speaks for himself” and had spoken on the issue without any guidance from Team Obama.

IF Reid was doing all of this at the behest of Team Obama aka White House, he’s just been thrown under the bus.

OR

Reid was forewarned that if things got dicy, he’d be thrown under the bus.

Either way, be interesting to see if Dirty Harry will continue with this charade.

It’s become the smear and not the taxes. The WH is going to pack it in . We’ll have them on the run by Wednesday.

gracie on August 6, 2012 at 10:33 PM

One thing that should be apparent to the most casual observer is, that Dingy Harry has been brain washed. The only thing we don’t know is, did it one or two enemas to get the job done.
