Quotes of the day

[T]hose who fall within the base of the Democratic Party tend not to bite quite as quickly on an unsubstantiated accusation [as Republicans do] — even when the charges are being proposed by their own side. It’s just not the way these folks play the political game and, if truth be told, they are embarrassed that their party has chosen to sign up for the event in the first place.

If you doubt this, good luck finding a Democratic leader willing to stand up for Harry Reid and his unproven accusations.

***

Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod on Sunday did not disavow claims made by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) that Mitt Romney did not pay taxes for 10 years, although he didn’t indicate that the campaign had reason to believe the claims are true.

“I don’t know who Harry was talking to,” Axelrod told Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.” “The point here, though, Chris, is the Romney campaign and Gov. Romney can resolve this in 10 seconds – they can release the tax returns.”…

“Why don’t they just put this to rest?” he said. “What is it that he’s hiding?”

***

Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., who appeared on “This Week” before Priebus, declined to criticize Reid and said that Romney could clear the air by releasing more returns.

“I do know that Mitt Romney could clear this up in 10 seconds by releasing the 23 years of tax returns that he gave to John McCain when he was being vetted for vice president. Or even 12 years of tax returns that his own father said were what was appropriate. Because one year of tax returns, like he’s released, could just be for show,” said Wasserman Schultz, who added that she does not know Reid’s source.”Like the overwhelming majority of voters believe, because the polls all show, that Mitt Romney owes us more than one year of tax returns. Owes us answers to questions about his overseas investments, owes us answers to questions about why he’s decided to invest in foreign countries, as opposed to investing in the United States.”

***

Schieffer compared the whole controversy with Reid and Romney to the days of Joe McCarthy.

“Isn’t this kind of like Joe McCarthy back in the era when he said, ‘I have in my hand the names of 400 people in the State Department who are communists’? It turns out he didn’t, and he was saying that the way to prove that they’re not is for them to come forward there. I mean, asking somebody to come forward just because there’s been an unsubstantiated charge, that’s a little thin to me.”

[Former Ohio Gov. Ted] Strickland insisted that the people “deserve to know” what is in Romney’s taxes, and defended Reid by saying that Romney’s lack of transparency on his returns “invites speculation.”

***

Candy Crowley, CNN: To the propriety of the leader of the Democrats in the Senate accusing, based on a source, the Republican nominee of not paying any taxes for 10 years, is that something that Chicago has encouraged? Do you want him to stop?

Robert Gibbs: Let’s be clear, I don’t think anybody controls Harry Reid.

Crowley: But if you asked him to stop, he would.

Gibbs: Again, put the tax returns out. Put this whole thing to rest. Candy, have you ever seen anybody go to such great lengths to not put something out? And when you generally don’t put something out, isn’t it because you’re generally hiding something?

***

Robert Gibbs on CNN and David Axelrod on Fox in their own Sunday turns expertly avoided commenting on Reid’s tactics (although they were asked to repeatedly) and did their more-in-sadness-than-in-anger act suggesting that all Romney has to do is release more years and everything will be just fine.

But it is all status quo: Romney has no intention of releasing additional years; the media will keep demanding it; most Republicans will quietly gripe that Romney has handled this all badly; many Republicans will quietly argue that Romney should and will put out additional years; a few Republicans will continue to break ranks and publicly urge Romney to put out additional years; the Obama campaign and the White House will continue to laugh and laugh and laugh at how easily they have hijacked the debate, moved the spotlight off the economy, and put Romney on the defensive; and polls will show a mixed verdict on if the matter is hurting Romney or not.

Jeb Bush met with Romney and is pushing Rubio. He’s not qualified; ask Cheney. Haley? He donated about 50,000 to her campaign and then this year she endorsed him, Duh? Martinez & Rice. I think this is part of Romney’s problem. He’s trying to please everyone and he’s winding up pleasing no one. He has a white woman, a black woman and a Spanish woman. Great!!

Not happy over this mess, so going to sign off before I say anymore, sorry.

bluefox on August 6, 2012 at 12:28 AM

He messed up this week on the CFA issue, i.e. Free Speech. He needs to address Traditional Marriage also. And if he or his handlers can’t figure out why he needs to do this, ask the people!! They will tell him.

bluefox on August 6, 2012 at 12:15 AM

FTR, Romney has said he believes in traditional marriage — after Obama’s great “evolution” on the matter, Romney said his position hasn’t changed — marriage is between a man & a woman. As for the CFA controversy — frankly, the way the MSM has treated him thus far, I don’t blame him for not jumping into the fray — we know his position on traditional marriage and anything he says about CFA specifically (even in the context of Free Speech – the *real* issue) would have been twisted into ROMNEY HATES GAYS!!! (Look at what Cathy actually said — nothing was about “hating gays;” it was all about defending/believing in traditional marriage — yet all the MSM coverage is how much Cathy & CFA HATES GAYS!!!!). It’s a distraction, IMO.

Also, the main problem is that the MSM doesn’t cover the stuff Romney *does* say — until the convention & his GE money becomes available when he can *actually* control his message, Romney can’t force the MSM to emphasize the fact that he basically got endorsed by both Netanyahu and Walesa on his foreign trip or the great speech he gave in Poland tying the visit to England/Israel/Poland together with “freedom loving countries like the USA” when they’d much rather pretend his saying he read the reports in the English papers re: issues at the Olympics & found them “disconcerting” was a HUGE.GAFFE.WITH.INTERNATIONAL.IMPLICATIONS and outright lying that his remarks about Israel’s culture was a diss of Palestine. You have to really be paying attention right now & going right to the video on the web yourself to see what is *actually* going on & what Romney is *actually* saying — if you just rely on the MSM you get a completely distorted story. So, no, until Romney can control his message in his own ads, I don’t think he should give the MSM anything they can distort in service of Obama.

Not for nothing, but this is one of the dumbest things that Time hack Halperin has written — the WH isn’t laughing about squat — they are sweating & praying that this sticks because so far they’ve blown through $100 million in negative ads & nothing else has. If they actually had anything on Romney the wouldn’t have had to use that 2 bit thug Reid to McCarthy-him on the Senate floor.

Dark Star on August 6, 2012 at 12:15 AM

Yep. Worst thing Mitt can do is let himself get sucked into this thing. Stay focused, ignore the anklebiters and unload solid body blows on the economy. He needs to get a bit more specific,..f’instance, a committment to opening up federal lands and offshore for drilling, some specifics on the Dodd Franks Bill, and something specific on defanging the EPA. He doesn’t have to get too detailed, but right now, it would be a shot in the arm. Some positives.

Since I’m in the mood to talk about the tax code I want to point out another distortion TeamObama & the MSM are doing re: Romney’s 2010 tax returns. The left keeps screaming about a $77,000 “tax deduction” Romney took on Ann’s horse. That’s a flat out lie — the $77,000 in expenses paid for the horses upkeep is listed on the 2010 return as a “loss” because that is how much was actually spent; however, the actual “loss taken” was 0 — ZERO — because the loss was a “hobby expense,” which is not allowed to be taken as a deduction under the tax code — it’s right there — a big fat ZERO on the line for that so-called “deduction.” I mention it so people here can arm themselves with the facts about this & because it is yet another bald-faced lie by TeamObama that the MSM is letting them get away with knowing that most people will not actually look at the return itself.

Another handy fact to pull out if confronted by a prog about the “loopholes” Romney “exploits” to pay less taxes is the fact that anyone who takes the mortgage interest deduction (if they own a house) and/or student loan interest deduction is using “loopholes” to pay less taxes. Just FYI.

Floating Rock and Goofey Johnson. Like we don’t know what’s goin’ on with you.
Wolfmoon was right again. Maybe we should changed the subject so these folks who will essentially be delivering a vote for Obama don’t have a platform to spill their nonsense.

gracie on August 5, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Changing the subject is probably why Romney isn’t releasing his taxes like his dad did, he want’s this distraction. Romney doesn’t want to talk about his past or about cutting spending and balancing the budget—neither does Obama—both sides are manufacturing stupid controversies like this to distract the American people from the crucial issues that the American people need to confront before it is too late. The ruling class doesn’t want the American people to have a say in the important issues. Our crooked government is working on secret plans to deal with those problems in secret, and they and their allies in the MSM don’t want you to know what those plans are until after you have already wasted your vote and can no change the outcome. They are going to shove their plans down Americas throat after the election is over, whether we like it or not. They are a bunch of crooked insider traders and unscrupulous cronies, most of them. Our government is rotten to the core, America is not the shining city on the hill anymore, the American people are being misled by a corrupt ruling class that no longer cares for the opinions of We the People.

America needs to wake up, pull their heads out of the sand and face reality before it is too late!

Romney’s dad released his taxes to avoid unnecessary distractions from the important issues of the day and the most important election in the land. By his father’s reasoning, Romney is inviting this distraction, and it’s playing right into the Democrats hand, even if Harry Reid goes down, which is unlikely because Americans will just stick their heads back in the sand and in a year or two Reid will probably get reelected, no sweat, just like most of the other crooks and cronies in Congress do.

What a statement of Romney’s powerlessness.

Romney could control the narrative starting now and lasting until election day if he had the nerve and commitment. He could have started with a virile and unambiguous affirmation of free speech and the terrible hidden anti-American subtext of the CFA “controversy” when he was thrown a large slow softball at that press conference. “Those issues are not part of my campaign.” Oh, that was really beautiful. That was a comment that really spoke of a winner, of courage, or of even wanting to be taken seriously. It was one of the most pathetic responses in the history of presidential campaigns.

Part of me is chuckling at all this: I predicted every bit of it. Another part is sick to my stomach, i.e., I want Obama crushed like the bug he is and I just keep screaming at the TV: “how hard is it for you retarded RINOs to figure out how the media and Left play this game.” How many election cycles does it take. All Romney needs to do is wake up one morning and say to himself “I’m GOING TO CONTROL THIS FUC*ING NARRATIVE AND MAKE YOU MISERABLE BASTARDS EAT OBAMA IN LITTLE PIECES”. Yes, it’s THAT easy. Just start taking it to them. Throw their questions back in their faces. Challenge their moral legitimacy to even ask questions. Change the subject. Pelt them with every last one of Obama’s lawless abuses and derelictions over the past three years and make THEM respond. Breitbart showed the way. Robert Kaplan wrote several years ago in his milestone essay, “The Media and Medievalism”, about the tyrannical roots on the interrogator. Yet we just accept the right and authority of the media to be our social interrogator. F*ck that.

Romney’s fate is in Romney’s hands. Is he a leader or not? Is he a man or not? Blaming the media for his insipid refusal to engage the enemies in this moment of crisis for America is just sad.

How did George do in the election after he released his forms?

a capella on August 6, 2012 at 12:59 AM

LOL! Yeah, don’t let the facts distract ya!

FTR, that year, 1968 (Nixon v. Humphrey) was the first time any presidential candidate has released income taxes as it is *not* required (only financial disclosures — required of every federal elected official & which actually shows all assets, not just income — is *required*). Since that time candidates have released between 0 (Reagan) and 12 (Clinton). GOP candidates have *always* released less than the Dem candidates. Romney releasing the last 2 years (the same as McCain did in 2008) is actually right in line with “precedent.”

And remember, there wasn’t any income taxes before 1913 (when 16th Amendment went into effect) and there has only been 8 presidents in total since Nixon 1968 — so this meme about how *all* candidates have *historically released* huge amounts of tax returns is another lie.

And since I’m on the subject, while most people will say you should keep your last 7 years of tax returns, only the last 3 years are “open” returns (meaning you can go back & amend them) and that is all you are technically *required* to keep. (Personally, I keep all mine in a file, but I’m overly-cautious like that). Why in the world anyone would claim any candidate needs to release more than 3 years (which, as I wrote, is all anyone is *required* to keep) is ridiculous to me.

The concern isn’t about whether allowing the American people make an educated decision will affect the outcome, it’s about it being the right and proper thing to do. If too much truth harms a candidate, tough luck! Could you imagine how much better off America would be today if there had been more truth in the ’08 election?

What America needs is MORE truth, not less. Neither side is has any intention of addressing the most important issues of the day, and the MSM isn’t pushing them, and have blacklisted Gary Johnson. Our government is laying their plans to address the really important issues, like how much more money they’re going to print/borrow and spend, behind closed doors, literally in secret. If the MSM knows what our government intends to inflict on us AFTER the election, they’re not saying.

Good points. However, one quibble — the law doesn’t require the release of *any* tax returns by *any* candidate — it only requires the filing of financial disclosure forms (which Romney has filed). By releasing 2 years of tax returns, Romney is disclosing *more* than the law requires.

The so-called *precedent* started by George Romney is just one in a long line of examples that if you give the Dems an inch, they not only take a yard, they claim they are *entitled* to more than a yard.

Look, you can’t run for President and expect to keep your past secret. It’s not like this is a personal matter, voters have a right to know if Romney is everything that the Democrats say about him. If Romney can’t stand the heat he should get out of the kitchen and let a viable candidate take over.

thanks for the correction. I actually finished reading your post about the financial disclosure forms after I posted mine, and was about to write an ‘erratum’ to it …and yes, he did file those and more, actually if people go to that website that Rove pointed to the other day (albeit the website was incorrectly transcribed by him) they can find Romney’s financial disclosure forms from the time since he was a governor till 2008, I think…only one year was missing, or I simply didn’t see it on that website…and then we already know that he released his tax returns for 2010 and will release the ones for 2011 too…so, his whole financial history since he was a governor to present, is actually out there, as required by law and for everybody to see and check…

I have no idea why you would think I listen to the MSM. I do read and research a lot tho.

So, Romney should just stay quiet, stay on the defense and not upset the MSM/Dems/Homosexuals. By defending Free Speech and Traditional Marriage might make them mad. He could put an ad out an tell everyone to be sure to go to youtube to watch his ads.Anything Romney does or says is going to make that group upset.

What did Romney think this campaign was going to be? A cake walk?
Didn’t he realize he was going to need to fight? If he doesn’t have what it takes to fight, then he should not have destroyed the other Republican Candidates that knew how to fight. Without fighting he’s not going to win this election and he’s certainly not going to win it the way he’s going.

I’ll tell you what, Sarah Palin has been taking it to Obama and the MSM and the Dems ever since she got shed of McCain & his co-horts. She’s a fighter and that’s why she is winning! Take a page out of Sarah’s book Romney. Good grief, what a disaster…

Look, you can’t run for President and expect to keep your past secret.

Like Obama?

It’s not like this is a personal matter, voters have a right to know if Romney is everything that the Democrats say about him.

First — if it isn’t a “personal matter,” then why are you asking for PERSONAL things like tax returns that no candidate is required to disclose? It isn’t like you are asking for policy things, like, say Fast & Furious documents. Second, the Dems are asking the equivalent of “when did you stop beating your wife” questions here. I fully predict with the way things are going by October they will be accusing Romney of having sex with a goat. Outrageous lies, such as “he may be a felon” and “he hasn’t paid ANY taxes in 10 years” — don’t deserve any more answer than “put up or shut up.” Of course, in October I fully expect to see you posting that Romney needs to prove he didn’t f*ck a goat as the Dems are saying about him.

If Romney can’t stand the heat he should get out of the kitchen and let a viable candidate take over.

FloatingRock on August 6, 2012 at 1:30 AM

Romney’s actually standing the heat quite well — dismissing the distractions & staying on the economy. It is TeamObama & the MSM who are panicking.

I don’t like responding to you because you have proven, time & time again that no matter what anyone writes, you ignore it — you’re a person who doesn’t listen, only waits for his turn to talk.

However, that cr@p you just wrote sums up, in a nutshell, everything that is wrong with every one of your so-called “objections” to Romney.

bluefox on August 6, 2012 at 1:38 AM

First of all, I like Palin & would have happily voted for her — but she.did.not.run. That isn’t to diminish the work she does for candidates, but don’t come at me with who’s the “fighter” here when one person did.not.run.

Second of all, it is one thing to be a pundit and another to be the candidate. As in, some things are for surrogates to do while the candidate stays above the fray & on message re: the economy — which for the umpteenth time is what this election is about. You’ll probably refuse to acknowledge that; I don’t care. As I’ve said (in this thread even!), some people aren’t going to be satisfied unless Romney challenges Obama to a duel. I give those who ascribe to that school of thought little credence.

Look, I get that you don’t care for either of these men and that’s fine by me. But it is beyond belief to equate the two. Romney’s life can be easily traced through public records. Obama’s life has been traced–by the MSM–through his ghost-written books, for God’s sake. School records, work records, travel records….Sheesh, there is a HUGE difference in personal information made available.
