Rove: Why isn’t President Hopenchange denouncing Reid’s attack on Romney?

posted at 2:31 pm on August 4, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Good question.  I can think of three answers:

  • Obama and his campaign asked Reid to make the attacks in order to get the smear out without having Obama’s/Team Obama’s own fingerprints on it
  • Obama didn’t initiate it, but he’s comfortable with the smear and desperate to get some traction on Romney
  • Obama’s afraid to tell Reid to stop, and risk angering his class-warfare base

The last one is a little difficult to believe, especially with prominent progressives in the media scolding Harry Reid for his baseless attacks and ridiculous, changing explanation of his source(s).  Obama could use this as the nearly-proverbial “Sister Souljah” moment and recapture the high ground on Hope and Change by telling Reid publicly to either produce real evidence or stay out of the presidential race altogether.  If Option 3 is really the truth, then Obama’s silence on this issue is a damning indictment of his leadership in political reform.  And if it’s not, then Options 1 and 2 are even more damning of his leadership and promises of healing the partisan rancor in the nation.

Karl Rove tells Fox and Friends this morning that the President has to be assigned ultimate responsibility for Reid’s smear, especially given his silence on the issue:

Rove listed a website that anyone can visit to see the last 10 years of Mitt Romney’s financial records including how much he paid in taxes. Frustrated with the tactics of the Obama campaign, Rove said, “For the majority leader of the Senate of the United States to go out and say this is a sign of both the desperation of the Democrats and more important than that, the complete lack of character, the slime ball nature of the Senate majority leader. And Harry Reid ought to be disgusted and embarrassed and ashamed because he shamed the great institution that he claims to lead.”

Rove said that President Obama is held responsible for the quality of his campaign even if he’s not the one verbalizing these accusations. He continued, “I not only don’t see the president disavowing it, I see his closest political adviser joining in this shameful activity. So the president hurts himself by this. What happened to all those promises of elevating politics … this is personal, this is shameful, this is despicable, this is Chicago-style thugs.”

That seems like the answer to the question, doesn’t it?

No. Assessing so much of this to his lack of leadership is true in part.

This is a testament to the fact that he is my no means a “nice guy”. Nice guys do not allow millions of Americans to suffer without jobs, higher food prices, fuel prices and no hope of regaining lost years. There is a moral element here that Romney referred to the other day, and I concur. Men of conscience do not force others to suffer in order to attain political goals.

“Nice guys” do not condone false allegations of such epic (and stupid) proportions to win when they have no salable arguments. The added offense is the insult, i.e. BO thinks we’re ignorant enough to believe a deranged, sniveling crook like Dingy Harry.

This isn’t a lack of “leadership”. It’s corruption and tyranny.

Cody1991 on August 4, 2012 at 2:48 PM

This is foolish. Republicans need to shift gears here, and fast.

Obama will never denounce Harry Reid, for they are birds of a feather. And Obama desperately needs Reid’s organization and Mob connectons to win Nevada.

They do not want the tax returns, and they do not have the tax returns. They want to keep TALKING about tax returns, to change the subject from Obama’s horrible record and make people suspicious of Romney as somebody who is hiding something.

It was a shameful move, but sadly a brilliant one, because the media are playing along. It’s the media that should have called out Reid, but they didn’t.

rockmom on August 4, 2012 at 2:48 PM

Reid is a legend in his own mind. But he also thinks he has equal standing with Obama.

Too bad for him that Obama thinks himself the cream of the crop, and that Harry is just another ‘typical white’ who owes everything to The One.

Reid and Pelosi are useful to Obama right now. But make no mistake–Obama hates them, too.

Liam on August 4, 2012 at 2:48 PM

Obama doesn’t denounce this because, as Ann Coulter said on Hannity two nights ago — the only way Obama has ever won elections is by getting private info on his opponent somehow unsealed & then lying & distorting that private info. This is Obama’s M.O. that he has used 100% of the time.

Unfortunately, unlike divorce records, he can’t just have a friendly judge or clerk “leak” Romney’s tax documents — Romney will have to take Reid’s bait & release them himself. To do so would be foolish on Romney’s part (I’m looking at you, idiot “conservative” pundits, Bill Kristol, et al) not because Romney hasn’t paid taxes (of course he has) but because Obama has already shown that he will distort & lie about perfectly legal methods someone of Romney’s wealth uses to lessen their tax burden. To paraphrase Judge Learned Hand — no one has a duty to pay *more* than the law demands. But the low-information, entitlement oriented voters upon whom Obama relies don’t care about that — most of them don’t pay taxes anyway and they sure as heck haven’t read the US Tax Code.

If I were Romney: pick a trusted, public person to see those elements of the tax returns and IRS transcripts to prove that taxes were paid, but disclose nothing else. They sign a nondisclosure agreement that they can only vouch for taxes being paid, but no the amounts. And do this asap – before this turns from the delightful agony of Obama’s truthful moment “You didn’t build that” to the offensive and deceitful smear of “You didn’t pay that.”

Make Reid put up or shut up.

beatcanvas on August 4, 2012 at 2:52 PM

Harry Reid is a pathetic clown! Since when is it ok for the leader of the Senate to engage in rumors and attack an American citizen from the floor of the Senate? Unfortunately for this Reid, by doing so…and finally admitting that he isn’t sure what he was told is accurate or not, he has just set himself up for a Libel suit. It shouldn’t come to that, though, as his constituents should be mortified by his behavior as their Senator and leader of the Senate.

And SHAME ON REPUBLICANS who have agreed with Reid and insisted that romney should release 10 years of tax returns, declaring it is Romney’s responsibility to prove Reid wrong. For anyone with this opinion – WAKE UP, you have been brainwashed by the Liberal Left.

1. The Right to Face Your Accuser: In this country, you have the RIGHT to face your accuser, & Reid will not meet Romney face-to-face on this issue.

2. Innocent until proven Guilty. All Americans are presumed INNOCENT until PROVEN Guilty! Reid made the accusation, & the burden of proof is on REID, not Romney. What Reid is doing equates to ME accusing you of beating your wife/husnabd and demanding YOU prove you aren’t rather than offering and proof to back up my claim. (Maybe Romney or a/his Super PAC should tell the press that he has heard gossip about Reid that he beats his wife or is a pedophile and demand Reid prove he ISN’T…after all, what is ‘good for the goose is good for the gander, right?)

3. THIS IS A DIVERSION. We ALL know Obama CAN’T & WON’T run on his record. THAT is why Obama continues to run ads already debunked as LIES by WaPo, WSJ, CNN, etc. By jumping at this despicable circus carnie claim by Reid people respond as Obama/Reid hopes, like someone with ADD responding to a ‘shiny object’!

Like they called out the Birthers, and those who called Obama a Muslim, or a commie. They love to call people out on these like they live and breathe. But how is lying about Romney paying taxes any better?

The whole Obama focus on Romney’s wealth seems crazy to me. Has this been done in any previous Presidential election? Did GW Bush go after Kerry’s wealth in 2004?

Obama whips up demagogic passions of envy and yes hatred towards the rich or anyone who has more than you do. He’s doing this specifically towards Romney. I think it’s despicable!

Dark Star on August 4, 2012 at 2:48 PM

Exactly. Obama’s campaign already knows what’s in Romney’s tax returns, but they can’t release the returns to the public because everybody will know who did it. It’s not the illegality of doing it that’s stopping them, just the certainty that the public would know who did it.

So they’re trying to back Romney into a corner and force him to release the returns himself. Then they’ll make hay over whatever big deduction or credit Romney took that makes him look like a fatcat.

It’s unlikely Romney ever took any deduction or credit he was not legally entitled to take — after all, Romney has been a multi-millionaire and a politician for decades. His tax returns are prepared and reviewed by tax professionals; he’s not little Timmy Geithner sitting at his kitchen table trying to figure out how to cheat on his taxes using Turbo Tax.

Romney should tell Obama, and his sleazy surrogate Harry Reid, to pound sand.

Wethal on August 4, 2012 at 3:07 PM

Romney is still hindered from pursuing certain issues and angles simply because he is still only the presumptive nominee.

When he has been formally named the nominee at the convention, he will be free to pursue a more complete line of attack and defense.

I also think that its wise to be as tight lipped and focused as possible at this stage of the campaign. September and October will be the real battleground. Personally, I prefer that Team Romney keep their plan of attack very close until then.

I’d be very surprised if this sort of scurrilous, reprehensible, baseless attack will go unanswered for as much as a single day after Romney is the official nominee. I think that’s why Obama/Team Obama has chosen to make it now, rather than later. They are desperate to try and take the focus off of Obama’s abysmal record in any way, with any thing.

I sympathize with those conservatives who are straining at the bit. I think part of the reason for our impatience stems from the extraordinarily long primary this cycle. It was also a fierce primary within the ranks of the GOP.

In a few weeks, I believe we will see a significant change in the tone of this campaign, and many of us will be gratified at how well our candidate has prepared. Romney won’t need surrogates to defend him. He will cause Obama to try and defend his miserable performance over the last four years. THIS is what Obama/Team Obama fears most.

RULE 1: Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have. If your organization is small, hide your numbers in the dark and raise a din that will make everyone think you have many more people than you do.

RULE 2: Never go outside the experience of your people… the result is confusion, fear, and retreat… [and] the collapse of communication.

RULE 3: Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy. Here you want to cause confusion, fear, and retreat.

RULE 4: Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules. You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity

RULE 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counter attack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.

RULE 6: A good tactic is one that your people enjoy. If your people aren’t having a ball doing it, there is something very wrong with the tactic.

RULE 7: A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag. Commitment may become ritualistic as people turn to other issues

RULE 8: Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose*.

RULE 9: The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.

RULE 10: The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign.

RULE 11: If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside. This is based on the principle that every positive has its negative*.

RULE 12: The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative. Avoid being trapped by an opponent or an interviewer who says, “Okay, what would you do?”

RULE 13. Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it. Don’t try to attack abstract corporations or bureaucracies. Identify a responsible individual. Ignore attempts to shift or spread the blame. The real action is in the enemy’s reaction. The enemy properly goaded and guided in his reaction will be your major strength.

Pick one. I pick #13.

It seems to be their favorite.

AZCoyote on August 4, 2012 at 3:01 PM

Exactly right. There is nothing illegal in them but there is stuff Obama can exploit & lie about — he’s already doing it with the 2010 returns.

And everyone on the Harry Reid train is forgetting (or just plain old disregarding) a vital bit of information — Romney has stated he has been audited by the IRS a “few times” but not within the last 10 years (i.e., audits occurred 2002 & before). We have Romney’s 2010 & 2011 tax return & estimate & he paid almost $7 million in taxes for those 2 years — so the 10 year period of “not paying any taxes” Reid is talking about isn’t 2001 to 2011. Does anyone really believe the IRS missed some previous 10 year period of Romney paying “no taxes” in their pre-2002 audits? Of course this is the kind of simple questions the MSM should be asking themselves (and Reid), but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Yet the Republicans keep thinking that pointing out what big liars the Democrats are is going to make them pause or reconsider.

sharrukin on August 4, 2012 at 3:22 PM

so the 10 year period of “not paying any taxes” Reid is talking about isn’t 2001 to 2011.

Romney didn’t pay any income taxes from 2003-2007 because he waived his salary as Governor.

I’m sure that Romney can’t wait to drop this bombshell on Obama during the debates.

Romney is happy to let this drag on.

And that Obama went to this church for twenty years!

2003-2007 isn’t a 10 year period; it’s a 4 year period. And while I know (despite the MSM’s lack of reporting) that Romney waived his salary as MA governor, I’m sure he paid capital gains taxes on his investment income during that period.
BTW — Romney donated his salary when he ran the Olympics to the Olympic foundation he helped to establish with the $100 million surplus they ended up making for the Salt Lake City Games. You won’t hear much about that in the MSM either.

Excellent point.

Truth is often strangled and mutilated, warped and twisted out of all recognition, overlooked and neglected, but often actively hidden away and silenced, by the Democrats.

But…it has a remarkable resilience… a propensity for standing back up and making itself heard… and when it does it slaps them in the face when its least convenient.

Ask Blago… for instance. He’s in the local penitentiary…sitting on a stack of tapes. Jesse Jackson Jr. is thinking of him, rest assured.

Rove: Why isn’t President Hopenchange denouncing Reid’s attack on Romney?

What’s stunning to me is that if Dear Leader actually had stuck to his campaign promises on many issues, he’d be twenty points ahead for re-election and a shoo-in…then he could do all his Marxist stuff freely in the second term. Also, there probably would have been no significant TEA Party movement, and both houses would probably still be in the hands of the DP.

But this frenetic slash and burn stuff he and his buds have been engaged in smacks more of a Banana Republic dictatorship grabbing everything they can before they get ousted.

More crook than Communist it would seem. But it could easily be both evenly…that is, Communism is merely a tool that facilitates larceny and racketeering. Even in the most decadent Communist countries their leadership always lived very well and wanted for nothing.

Alberta_Patriot on August 4, 2012 at 3:49 PM

The answer to all of this is simple;

Democrats, liberals, progressives, socialists, communists, are all brain damaged sub humans incapable of understanding that individual freedom and personal responsibility are the keystones of social and political evolution in the world. Socialism and communism are dead and dying along with dictatorship style governments and they can’t handle it. They’re addicted to the power and graft involved in their putrid styles of dictatorial gooberment.

They need to be disposed of so the rest of us can continue on the lines of a peaceful evolution. I think a bloody revolution is the prescription to this disease of socialist crap, then some constitutional amendments banning everything BUT our capitalist, constitutional representative democracy.

Wolfmoon on August 4, 2012 at 3:50 PM

Are you sure?

Maybe it just goes by another name? Say…Democrat, or progressive?

The Democratic party has been shifting further and further left for decades. Reagan famously stated “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The party left me.” That trend has accelerated in the past twenty years.

And here’s the kicker…they are winning on average half the country. The much more radical modern version of the Democratic party is still politically competitive.

The modern Republican party is more leftist than the Democrats of 1950 were.

So is it really true that socialism and communism are dying?

Oh, come on. It can’t be that terrible or the House would impeach Reid, obviously. In fact, Boehner may have been alerted that the accusation is true and that is why there is no impeachment. Certainly if Reid had said without any evidence that Romney is a Sandusky, impeachment would have taken place by now. Unless the Republicans are so terrified of their own shadows to the point of being paralyzed, you must assume the accusation is true.

Romney has spoken about all of this — it’s how I know about it because I refuse to rely on the MSM reporting & go to the actual video of speeches, interviews, etc. Romney can’t make the MSM report things accurately — look what they did to him on his overseas trip which was, in reality, a triumph as he had Bibi & Lech all but endorsing him. And do you really think — right now when he can’t spend the GE money until the convention, is the time for an ad blitz about donating his Olympic salary & forgoing his salary as MA governor? Patience, grasshopper — that’s the kind of stuff for the convention.
I don’t care what any of our first choices were during the primary — we all have to admit that Romney didn’t get to retire in his 40s after making himself a multi-millionaire in the world of high finance by being impatient and undisciplined.
