Rove: Why isn’t President Hopenchange denouncing Reid’s attack on Romney?

posted at 2:31 pm on August 4, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Good question.  I can think of three answers:

  • Obama and his campaign asked Reid to make the attacks in order to get the smear out without having Obama’s/Team Obama’s own fingerprints on it
  • Obama didn’t initiate it, but he’s comfortable with the smear and desperate to get some traction on Romney
  • Obama’s afraid to tell Reid to stop, and risk angering his class-warfare base

The last one is a little difficult to believe, especially with prominent progressives in the media scolding Harry Reid for his baseless attacks and ridiculous, changing explanation of his source(s).  Obama could use this as the nearly-proverbial “Sister Souljah” moment and recapture the high ground on Hope and Change by telling Reid publicly to either produce real evidence or stay out of the presidential race altogether.  If Option 3 is really the truth, then Obama’s silence on this issue is a damning indictment of his leadership in political reform.  And if it’s not, then Options 1 and 2 are even more damning of his leadership and promises of healing the partisan rancor in the nation.

Karl Rove tells Fox and Friends this morning that the President has to be assigned ultimate responsibility for Reid’s smear, especially given his silence on the issue:

Rove listed a website that anyone can visit to see the last 10 years of Mitt Romney’s financial records including how much he paid in taxes. Frustrated with the tactics of the Obama campaign, Rove said, “For the majority leader of the Senate of the United States to go out and say this is a sign of both the desperation of the Democrats and more important than that, the complete lack of character, the slime ball nature of the Senate majority leader. And Harry Reid ought to be disgusted and embarrassed and ashamed because he shamed the great institution that he claims to lead.”

Rove said that President Obama is held responsible for the quality of his campaign even if he’s not the one verbalizing these accusations. He continued, “I not only don’t see the president disavowing it, I see his closest political adviser joining in this shameful activity. So the president hurts himself by this. What happened to all those promises of elevating politics … this is personal, this is shameful, this is despicable, this is Chicago-style thugs.”

That seems like the answer to the question, doesn’t it?

Tokyo Rove – L.M.F.A.O.!!!

HondaV65 on August 5, 2012 at 10:44 AM

this is why I hate the Gop establishment. Rove used this same tactic against COD in De in 2010. Now he is outraged that Reid would use it against Mitt? Can you say hypocrite. And I’ll tell Mitt the same thing rove told COD if it isn’t true than just release the documents proving your innocent. If not you have something to hide.
unseen on August 4, 2012 at 11:20 PM

Oh please! Still holding a grudge against Rove over COD? But hey, you know who is the master of deploying unsubstantiated rumors and veiled innuendo about other GOP candidates? Cue the Jeopardy theme music.

Wow! This is the whine-iest, waaaaaaahmbulance thread on HotAir EVAH!

Karl Rove complaining about hardball politics? He’s just mad because the President is not going to play the role of John Kerry in this election.

Oh, and remember when the President quoted John McCain regarding the economy and the Romney campaign gleefully inferred that it was Obama’s statement? And of course they’re still running wild with the out-of-context “you didn’t build that” remark cherry-picked from a campaign speech. Romney can dish it out, but he can’t take it!

The Obama campaign is going to pound Romney on his refusal to release more of his tax returns! And well they should!

The real question is why haven’t Republicans turned this entire issue around on the dear leader?
This guy has not released anything since he came to office and if you dare ask where is the real bc,where are your grades, how did you get into college, who paid for it, etc etc.you are racist. Talk about a double standard!

rodguy911 on August 5, 2012 at 12:05 PM

wow…like I said “far-right”. You can’t see it because you are obviously standing in it. There will be no DEM Tea Party candidates…that’s just a silly thing to say. Why run away from being a “far-right” conservative? Isn’t that a good thing? Also, name one philosophy that the Tea Party shares that far-right conservatives don’t. Sarah Palin is far-right and she is indeed a Tea Party person correct?

StoneKrab on August 5, 2012 at 7:22 AM

Palin isn’t5 far right. hell she worked in AK with the dems to root out the courruption in the GOP AK party. Her budgets were bi-partisian, Her approval rating was 87% with voters in AK not a “far-right” type of person.

There are many “far-right” positions that the Tea party doesn’t support. the Tea party doesn’t believe in faith based tax payer funded programs, the far right supported no child left behind and medicare part D under Bush. the Tea party would call those programs wastes and doomed to fail. there is nothing “far right” about wanting freedom and smaller government. And there are many reagan democrates who do not consider themselves far right but support the TEa party. in fact if anyone stops and really things about the Tea party it is made up of mostly Reagan democrates and Reagan republicans who are tired of big government and high taxes pushed by both the far left and far right. If there is any real moderate party in America its the TEa party.

Alinsky tactics: turn the negative into a positive.

Since Obama himself is a tax cheat and employs tax cheats, scream that others are.

Since the Obama Party is overwhelmingly made up of tax cheats and tax dodgers, scream that others are.

But when one looks at the fact that ChumpThreads REFUSES to condemn Obama Party tax cheats, the hypocrisy becomes stark and blatantly obvious.

It’s an echo-chamber tactic. It’s easy to show that ChumpThreads and his fellow Obama supporters endorse, elect, and employ tax cheats. But since ChumpThreads is a lying criminal like his Obama who thinks that tax laws are to be cheated on, he doesn’t see the contradiction.

northdallasthirty on August 5, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Furthermore, relative to ChumpThreads and proof that Obama supporters like himself are tax cheats, I offer how Obama endorses tax cheats, uses tax cheats to campaign, and pushes legislation via tax cheats.

So that’s your answer, ChumpThreads. You and your Barack Obama are tax cheats and liars, and you are attempting to project that onto Mitt Romney.

But since you endorse and support tax cheats and liars, all that proves is that you, Barack Obama, Harry Reid, and your entire Obama Party are disgusting, lying hypocrites who scream for higher taxes on working Americans while you won’t pay your own.

Can I buy you another cup of coffee ND30? That was excellent!

tom daschle concerned on August 5, 2012 at 12:40 PM

Obama doesn’t denounce this because, as Ann Coulter said on Hannity two nights ago — the only way Obama has ever won elections is by getting private info on his opponent somehow unsealed & then lying & distorting that private info. This is Obama’s M.O. that he has used 100% of the time.

Unfortunately, unlike divorce records, he can’t just have a friendly judge or clerk “leak” Romney’s tax documents — Romney will have to take Reid’s bait & release them himself. To do so would be foolish on Romney’s part (I’m looking at you, idiot “conservative” pundits, Bill Kristol, et al) not because Romney hasn’t paid taxes (of course he has) but because Obama has already shown that he will distort & lie about perfectly legal methods someone of Romney’s wealth uses to lessen their tax burden. To paraphrase Judge Learned Hand — no one has a duty to pay *more* than the law demands. But the low-information, entitlement oriented voters upon whom Obama relies don’t care about that — most of them don’t pay taxes anyway and they sure as heck haven’t read the US Tax Code.

Dark Star on August 4, 2012 at 2:48 PM

Obama has never actually done anything he can run on no matter what office he held. That’s why seek and destroy are his only options.
………………..
What I would like to know is why is there no pressure on obama to release all the info he has hidden for years!
How come our side does not ask for a real bc,not a phonied up internet pos, grades from all his colleges, how he was accepted, on what basis, who paid for his college, who his real girl friends were, we already know who his “boy” friends were and are,how did he and Moochhelle lose their law licenses and why,and all the other things he has kept hidden from everyone all the time. <P.
Are we truly racists for asking these questions?
I’m tired of the double standard.

rodguy911 on August 5, 2012 at 1:12 PM

Dingy Harry is one of the most corrupt Senators ever to hold office.
This guy became a real estate lawyer by twisting and turning laws, people, documents, lying, cheating and pulling off every scam he could for years. He has never been asked to account for any of it.
Some of his family are in on the deals and he has never been called up for it only makes charges about Mitt and his made up tax problems. Too good!!

It is so funny to see politicians who bask in the double standard throwing mud at one another. What’s funnier is they are blaming each other for the troubles of the Nation when all of them had a hand in it.

mixplix on August 5, 2012 at 3:06 PM

Of course Rove is correct and this is Obama directed. The obvious question is why Romney (who is basically Mr Clean) should release more than he already has when he is running against a man who won’t release anything at all?

Gibbs: Put this whole thing to rest. Candy, have you ever seen anybody go to such great lengths to not put something out? And when you generally don’t put something out, isn’t it because you’re generally hiding something?

“I’ve never seen anybody jump through more hoops to say, a, somebody is lying, but also not put out a document that would prove what the real truth is,” Gibbs also said.

This is hilarious coming from someone in the Obama administration LOL

Until Obama releases his college and graduate/law school grade transcripts, Romney should not be under ANY compulsion to release his tax returns.

~Robert Gibbs

Strike Hornet on August 5, 2012 at 7:11 PM

WHY? Uh, because obama is behind this lame attack – Reid works for obama, not the American people – his only function is to do obama’s bidding.

Pork-Chop on August 5, 2012 at 7:55 PM

It’s clear to me that this attack by Reid is at the behest of the jug-eared Kenyan. It is also clear that they are running on empty because this is an attack best made in late October when there is no time to refute the idea. It could be that they are holding something back for later but given the fact that we’ve been talking about Mitt Romney’s 9th grade report card, I’m thinking they have nothing left in the arsenal than the idea that there is something wrong with a guy getting rich in America.

Full disclosure, did not watch the clip. I don’t watch anything with Rove anymore. I actually purchased his book, and then his Kanya West moment occurred while Christine O’donnell was giving her acceptance speech with his irate tone and spit coming out of his mouth. It is not about Christine, I do not reside in DE, it is the point. Rove is politician as usual, but he stepped over the line and showed what a poor loser he is. I donated the book to a senior citizen Independent living complex. I have no interest in him or his white board.

Karl has been in politics long enough to know that the democrat party is not forced to ever denounce statements made by one of their ilk. You need the media to partake in the demand and the republican party does not have their cooperation… Good thing, who needs the bafoons anyway.
