Washington Times catches another Obama hypocritical election ploy — this time regarding layoff warnings in the defense industry

posted at 4:01 pm on August 3, 2012 by Dustin Siggins

Earlier this week, the Labor Department advised defense contractors that giving pink slips to thousands of employees who will be laid off if sequestration takes place would be “inappropriate.” Erika hit the election aspect of this on Tuesday, pointing out that the 60-day layoff notice that typically happens would put layoff notices coming four days before the November election. Coincidence? Must be…

However, on Wednesday the Washington Times reported on a different aspect of this layoff notice discussion — that the Labor Department’s advice is in direct opposition to how the President viewed layoffs in 2007. From the Times:

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers with 100 workers or more to give 60 days’ notice of a plant closing or mass layoffs. And in 2007, then-Sen. Obama urged Congressto beef up the law, arguing that employers were ignoring it and the government wasn’t enforcing it.“For too long, employers have failed to notify workers that they’re about to lose their jobs due to mass layoffs or plant closings even though notice is required by the WARN Act,” Mr. Obama said in that news release on July 17, 2007.

That same month, Mr. Obama also said, “We must act at the federal level to close the loophole that allows employers to disregard the WARN Act without penalty. We must give the WARN Act teeth, to ensure that workers are not left in the lurch without a job or a paycheck.”

That year, Senate Democrats led by Mr. Obama, Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York proposed the Forewarn Act, which would have added to the regulations by requiring 90 days notice of layoffs and expanding the number of companies under federal jurisdiction. The legislation died.

The White House did not respond to a question about the apparent inconsistency between Mr. Obama’s position five years ago and the administration’s policy guidance this week.

It is doubtful that any politician is innocent of using policy to boost his or her chances of re-election, but this President seems to be pushing the limit. Between the HHS mandate — designed to create a “War on Women” — class warfare on taxes, his spring tour talking about college loans, and Obama’s recent support for gay marriage, he really has become the perpetual campaigner. And with the Times’ report showing this recent campaign prop (er, regulatory advice from a federal agency) to be a 180-degree switch from his 2007 position and legislation, it’s got to be getting hard for any Democrats to say the President really is more concerned about the jobs of the American public than his own.

Then what we really need to do is.

Impeach Obama.

Mostly I think that Republicans have no spine what so ever.

They just like to complain. But they will do nothing what so ever about what they are complaining about.

If they actually cared they would have already Impeached Obama. He took office and immediately started breaking the law.

But nothing.

Put up or shut up.

Impeach Obama or STFU.

Pushing the limit? Isn’t an Act of Congress law? I realize Obama picks and chooses which laws he wants to enforce, but wouldn’t it open up the government to lawsuits by laid-off workers who weren’t informed, or are the pink slips supposed to only be withheld for the 4 days until after the election?

Not that I want 0bama to win, as that would ruin my future as much as anyone else’s, but I would take a savage satisfaction in the “Hope And Change!” crowd of 2008 watching their lives swirl down the drain as “The One They Were Waiting For” destroyed the country by 2016.

Philly on August 3, 2012 at 4:40 PM

I think Lockheed Martin is planning on sending pink slips to every one of its employees. They’ve announced it. They have to do this because Obama is never in the office and work on what he’s going to cut and what he’s going to keep under sequestration hasn’t taken place yet.

You’d better believe the corporations/companies who have been saving every penny possible for the advent of Obamacare and taxaggedon will cover their you know what. Just think though, IF we can get a change in the Senate and White House and Obamacare and taxes and regulations get under control, all that stashed cash will be released into the economy.

Just think of the jobs that will be created with the gas pipeline and by removing the “close shop” regulations on coal? And maybe we can coax off-shore drilling rigs back to the Gulf.

There’s hope if we can win this. There really is. I lived through Carter and 50 straight years of Democrat control of the House and the Senate. The pendulum has swung so far to the left, it’s about the fall off the pin. Unlike that deep thinker, Matt Lewis, this really, really is the end if we don’t change course now. (BTW, has anyone asked Lewis if he ever had to study the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich? Don’t schools teach ANYTHING anymore?)

Portia46 on August 3, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Obama could have used our leverage in Iraq to keep the country on course with a relatively small number of American troops stationed there after the war. And he could have made good on his campaign promise to win in Afghanistan. A comeback is accomplished by one side but always facilitated by the other. In the gap between American rhetoric and American action Islamists staged a revival.
