Reid: My source on Romney’s taxes is so incredibly credible that I won’t say who he is

posted at 10:01 am on August 3, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

After Mitt Romney told Harry Reid to “put up or shut up” about allegations of income-tax evasion, Reid chose this morning to … do neither.  Instead, Reid released a statement late yesterday essentially tripling down on his evidence-free accusations, and again insisted that Romney had to prove himself innocent:

As I said before, I was told by an extremely credible source that Romney has not paid taxes for ten years. People who make as much money as Mitt Romney have many tricks at their disposal to avoid paying taxes. We already know that Romney has exploited many of these loopholes, stashing his money in secret, overseas accounts in places like Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

Last weekend, Governor Romney promised that he would check his tax returns and let the American people know whether he ever paid a rate lower than 13.9 percent. One day later, his campaign raced to say he had no intention of putting out any further information.

When it comes to answering the legitimate questions the American people have about whether he avoided paying his fair share in taxes or why he opened a Swiss bank account, Romney has shut up. But as a presidential candidate, it’s his obligation to put up, and release several years’ worth of tax returns just like nominees of both parties have done for decades.

It’s clear Romney is hiding something, and the American people deserve to know what it is. Whatever Romney’s hiding probably speaks volumes about how he would approach issues that directly impact middle-class families, like tax reform and the economy. When you are running for president, you should be an open book.

I understand Romney is concerned that many people, Democrats and Republicans, have been calling on him to release his tax returns. He has so far refused. There is only one thing he can do to clear this up, and that’s release his tax returns.

Note, please, that we seem to be back to one source for this information — “an extremely credible source,” but Reid did not use a plural.  Earlier in the week, Reid claimed to have “a number of sources,” and that “the word is out.”  So which is it?  One extremely credible source from Bain who somehow got to look at Romney’s personal taxes for a ten-year period even though no one would have access to that except the Romneys, their accountant, and the IRS?  Or a number of sources who say “the word is out”?  Reid’s sounding more and more like Joe McCarthy every day.

Reid, who also refuses to release his own tax returns, isn’t just a hypocrite and a slanderer.  He’s also a political idiot.  Until these attacks, Romney was on the defensive over his tax returns.  Now Romney can paint his decision to keep them private as a principled stand against unscrupulous opponents.  Reid has handed the high ground to Romney in this fight with his scurrilous lies.  Reid has all but ruined Obama’s strategy of making Romney look secretive and weird.

Investors Business Daily editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez agrees that the word is out on Reid:

Andrew Malcolm wants to probe Reid’s brain, too:

Have you heard about a mysterious phone call from one of Happy Harry Reid’s political cronies from the mortifying days in 1974 when Paul Laxalt waxed him for the Nevada Senate seat that changed the course of Reid’s life forever?

It’s a pretty shocking story, and one that the powerful Democrat has understandably never explained through all these years. It’s haunted him though, through those early devastating political losses for the Senate and the Las Vegas mayor’s office, the defeats that turned him into the bitter, cynical political mumbler he’s become at age 72.

This troubling tale has haunted Harry Reid through the shadowy years he ran the Nevada Gaming Commission, through his public embarrassment over the Los Angeles Times investigation into his son and son-in-law’s Washington lobbying activities, the ethics investigation into the free tickets Reid happily accepted to boxing matches and the successful land development deal that ended up netting Reid $1 million when he sold it, in an amazing coincidence, to a friend and it became a shopping center.

And through all these years, Harry Reid has never bothered to deny that awful early story. Just as he’s never denied any early involvement with left-wing South American political parties and an unsuccessful 1964 bid to become a Goldwater Girl.

I remember that LA Times investigation well.  It explained at least in part how Reid got to be so wealthy while working in public office.  Maybe we can start asking Reid about that, because the LA Times actually did have a number of credible sources, as well as documentation from the public record.

First of all, we know all this to be false for one simple reason that Harry overlooked and we noticed right away. If there was such a credible person, they would not be dealing with Reid. No person with credibility would be associated with him at all. Rumor also has it that perhaps his dad, did not really take his own life and there were two people there when it happened and one of them may have been Harry and the other one, well, he is no longer with us.

If not spot on, close.

After all, who is most motivated, who has the most to gain, and who has the money to bribe people to commit felonies to illegally dig through Romney’s tax returns.

Reid is lying about Romney not paying any taxes, but if he manages to get Romney to release his tax returns that will be forgotten.

The objective is to get Romney to release his tax returns so the the class warfare warriors can do a public audit in the court of public opinion. Even though Romney did nothing wrong and his returns are perfectly in order he will be crucified by the class warfare pitchfork and torch mob for “not paying his fair share”, “taking advantage of loopholes available only to the wealthy”, etc.

And speaking of Soros, wouldn’t we all like to take a look at his tax returns from the last 10 years. I bet he makes Romney look like an amateur in minimizing taxes

If Reid is unwilling to reveal his source, then it is because his source is Obama. What is Reid trying to hide? (Whee! That was fun…)

But the mean spirited fiction laid out by the politically funded

‘Swift Boat Vets’ campaign was contemptible enough it’s legacy is that the term ‘swift boating’ now clearly means an ‘unfair or untrue political attack’.

LOL! Normally I wouldn’t waste my time responding to such a cretinesque post filled with such outright Lies, but obviously you’re one of those famous “low information” (translated: “Low IQ”) Democrat Voters that helped O’bama get elected in 2008. Remember, he set an all time new American record by getting 70% of the high school dropout vote. He’ll need the other 30% this year.

Your first allegation, which I have bolded, is a bald-faced Lie. No one has been able to refute the SBVT claims, but please feel free to attempt to be the first.

As for your second Lie, which I have also bolded, the SBVT were funded by private individuals, who happened to support a particular political Party. Nothing illegal there. And the Republican Party itself had nothing to do with their funding, and you know it.

It is true that the SBVT were a federal political activity, and they were in fact fined by the FEC for not reporting they were such. But the FEC also found that:

Following an investigation, the Commission concluded that Swiftvets did not unlawfully coordinate its activities with, or make excessive in-kind contributions to, any federal candidate or political party committee.

Now, please present your nonexistent “evidence” that the SBVT claims were “fiction”. Credible and multi-sourced cites only, as usual.

Disclaimer, I am friends with several of the SBVT, and in fact have known one of them for over 50 years. Liars they most certainly are not.

LOL. Take a look at the email I received from “Harry” attempting to raise funds off this craziness:

Dear Steven,
The other day, I said that I’d been told by a very credible source that Mitt Romney hadn’t paid taxes for ten years. Governor Romney got upset. But, you know what? I’m not backing down.
I’m not backing down because, when you run for President, you should be an open book. I’m not backing down because Mitt Romney is hiding something — and the American people deserve to know what it is.
Governor Romney told me to “put up or shut up” — but he’s the one who’s shut up when people asked legitimate questions about his finances, and it’s up to him to put up his taxes so we can see the answers.
We can’t let Mitt Romney get away with this — not with hiding his taxes, and not with a tax plan that would reach into the pockets of the middle class to help multi-millionaires like himself.
Will you stand with me? Click here to help me tell Mitt Romney we’re not going to shut up until he comes clean — and make a contribution to prove you’re not backing down.
It’s well-known that wealthy individuals like Mitt Romney have all sorts of creative tricks to dodge taxes — offshore accounts, hidden loopholes, questionable deductions, and the like.
And it’s clear that the Romney campaign knows they have something to hide. After Governor Romney promised to tell the nation whether he’d ever paid a lower tax rate than the 13.9% he paid in the one year of taxes he partially released, his campaign quickly walked it back.
So instead of attacking me for raising questions, Governor Romney needs to start answering them. And if he thinks I’m about to back down, he’s got another thing coming.
Mitt Romney is waiting for us to apologize and stop asking questions. Click here to help build our strength and show him that’s not going to happen.
In the end, Mitt Romney could end all the controversy by releasing his taxes. He can tell us exactly what shady tricks he’s used to avoid paying his fair share, or he can prove that he had nothing to hide all along.
What he can’t do — what I won’t let him do — is keep hiding. He’s running for President, for Pete’s sake. And it’s up to us to make Mitt Romney come clean with the American people.
Click here to take a stand with me.
Thanks for proving that Democrats aren’t about to back down on this.

For Harry Reid to embarrass himself like this—the inside polling must be really bad for them!!!

This is “reaching” of the most transparent kind. And they are obiviously out of ideas and amunition to go after Romney.

A lessor man would not hold up under this unrelenting attack. Romney has been under attack from the right and the left since 2008. The way the right tried these very same tactics for two years before the nomination should have steeled him.

I am so shocked at the blatant lies Harry Reid is willing to tell on the floor of the Senate. It is a sad day in America when the Majority leader can act like a spurned teenager at the podium in the Senate.

I think Harry Reid may actually have a screw loose. I can’t believe he would do that!

The whole idea of “Tax Avoidance” as “unfair” is a scam. Find one American tax payer who wouldn’t take a legal deduction! Would we want to elect a candidate who wasn’t smart enough to take every legal deduction possible. Romney should turn this around on Reid and friends, by asking only the Americans who claim legal deductions and credits to vote for him and ask the ones who take illegal deductions, such as Tim Geithner, to vote for Obama! For Gosh sakes, even people who take the “earned” income tax credit are legally using the American tax code to obtain refunds on taxes they never paid in the first place.

I’d be shocked if it WASN’T. Lies can emerge anywhere, and Reid isn’t smart enough to think up this whopper all by himself.

But if I had my choice of political ciphers to parrot my message out into the open… well… Harry Reid is at the bottom of the list. You want a fiery Yosemite Sam figure delivering those McCarthy attacks, not a wimpy Elmer Fudd figure like Dingy Harry.

Or I’d “leak” it to the media, but Brian Ross is still in his “time-out” of sorts so that option probably wasn’t available.

And as Ed points out, this simply puts Mitt on the offensive on an issue he’d long been in a defensive mode (even to the point of over-emphasizing being an ordinary guy even during the primaries). Harry is fumbling what was left of Obama’s lone attack point against Mitt that had a chance to resonate with voters. Better still, he’s too stupid to realize any of that.

Keep it up, Harry.
