Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on August 3, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama went to Ohio this week in order to convince Rust Belt voters that he really cared about their economic concerns. At one stop, Mansfield, the biggest economic concern in the Obama administration’s plan to close the local Air Force base, which would kill about a thousand jobs in the town. What did Obama say to Mansfield voters to set their minds at ease about the base closing?  According to Politico’s James Hohlmann — absolutely nothing:

BY THE NUMBERS (FROM BOSTON)-5,422: Words In His 2 Ohio Rallies. 2,563: Words In Mansfield Rally. 2,859: Words In Akron Rally. Up To 1,000: Jobs at stake at Mansfield AFB. 43: Minutes On The Stump Throughout Ohio. 22: Minutes On The Stump In Mansfield. 21: Minutes On The Stump In Akron. 0: Words Or Seconds Addressing His Budget’s Closure Of Mansfield AFB.

And guess where Obama landed with Air Force One?  Yes, indeedy:

As Obama delivered a blistering appraisal of Republican rival Mitt Romney’s tax plan at boisterous rallies in Mansfield and Akron, his ninth visit to Ohio this year was nagged by the irony that Air Force One landed at an airport with a base that his proposed budget has put in jeopardy.

After landing AF1 at the base the Obama administration wanted closed and an outcry arose in Ohio, the White House suddenly reversed course — even though Obama never personally addressed the issue while in Mansfield:

With Republicans mocking the visit, the White House clarified that it plans to eliminate the fleet of C27-J medium aircraft flown and maintained by the 179 {+t}{+h} Airlift Wing in Mansfield, but it does not plan to shutter the base and furlough 800 Guard members, as previously reported.

White House spokeswoman Joanna Rosholm said the administration will work with the Defense Department “to find a mission for Mansfield Lahm Air National Guard base so that the men and women who serve there can continue to make their important contribution to our national security.”

Republicans reacted wryly: “It’s ironic that it took a campaign event to convince (Obama) of the invaluable work of Mansfield’s Air Guard, rather than the thousands of letters and calls from those directly affected,” said U.S. Rep. Pat Tiberi, a Genoa Township Republican who will represent part of Richland County — Mansfield is the county seat — if he wins a seventh term, as expected.

First Obama lands at a base that his administration planned to close, then ignored the issue while in town — and reversed course afterward instead of using the trip to highlight the policy change.  It’s hard to see how Obama and his team could have screwed up that opportunity more.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Yeah, but there’s no need to pay attention to this because Romney had a disastrous trip abroad full of major gaffes. I don’t remember what any of the gaffes were, but the media says it was really bad.

It’s hard to see how Obama and his team could have screwed up that opportunity more.

Well, instead of the usual Boeing product, he could have arrived in a C-27J.

More importantly, I am convinced that his people did not even realize that Obama was going to kill this base until it was pointed out to him in the media. That’s the true OOTD.

Happy Nomad on August 3, 2012 at 8:17 AM

Look, if the base needs to be closed, close it and explain why. Instead they’re going to announce some sort of make-work mission before the election, and then pull the rug out and close the base anyway after the election. Doesn’t everybody see through this cr@p?

They did the same thing with a base here in western PA. FLOTUS came to Pittsburgh, and the closing of the base was a big deal here on the news. Nothing was said while she was here, and then a few days later the closing was put on hold.

Night Owl on August 3, 2012 at 8:21 AM

What the whitehouse spokesman really said.

So they’re going to keep the base open, but remove its reason for existing?

At least have the stones to just say the AFB doesn’t have a purpose do to the modernization of the force. That would at least garner some respect.

Maybe the mission of the base can be as an airfield for Obama to land on should Ohioans in that area ever feel the need to bum-nuzzle their president if he wins another term.

On the other hand, perhaps he should launch a “Save the Base” campaign with an ad imploring those with a connection to the base to send “3 dolla” to help Obama continue the important work of landing there occasionally.

tpitman on August 3, 2012 at 8:46 AM

And the stars look very different today

Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do

Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles, I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows
Ground control to major Tom, your circuits dead, there’s something wrong

Watch what happens today. I bet you won’t see anyone let the goading by gays get to them. If they are going to riot, they are going to do it on their own, and we will still have an election. There are NOT enough of them to make that happen.

Night Owl on August 3, 2012 at 9:24 AM

They will flutter around, say they are “looking into” something else that this base can be involved in, and stretch it out until after the vote in Nov. when it is no longer obama’s problem. He cannot think we are that stupid, can he?

Xyz22 on August 3, 2012 at 9:38 AM

According to Fox Business gas prices in several Ohio cities went up $0.15 a gallon overnight. That ought to win 0 a few votes.

marinetbryant on August 3, 2012 at 9:58 AM

What gets me when Zero goes on the stump at these towns, is the cheering crowds hanging on every word. Do these people have any clue at all what is happening to their community? If they were there in the middle of the day, they were probably on the dole.

So the Jobless Wonder is saying now that the largest function of a military facility is going to be discontinued, but no jobs will be lost.

Math is really hard for the Resident, but not so much for the voters in Mansfield. May he continue to tour the nation as effectively as he has there.

Their words speak for them proclaiming the lies they tell as they give voice to what they think the people want to hear to quell the liars fear the truth brings into the light.

This from the campaign of a poltician who has said you cannot believe what a politician says or promises during a campaign is true or will be honored, and makes it a practice to hold to that.

Franklyn on August 3, 2012 at 2:20 PM

Two points, neither very serious. First, from the figures in the opening it seems that Obama talks at 1.9 words per second,”WOW” and says little. Next, he wants to close down the base as a NG base and open it up for the 1st Civilian Aviation Attack Squadron under Homeland Security directed by the DOJ under the overall command of General Holder.
