Romney to Harry Reid on tax claims: Put up or shut up

posted at 8:19 pm on August 2, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via the Daily Caller, a nice answer to a question Romney was ready for. Fehrnstrom was ready too on Fox this morning:

“This reminds me of the McCarthy hearings back in the 1950s,” Eric Fehrnstrom said on Fox News. “And it was another son from Massachusetts, Joseph Welch, who finally asked the question that should be asked of Harry Reid, which is, ‘Have you no sense of decency, sir?’ Is there nothing that you won’t do in the name of dirty politics? I think it’s just shameful.”…

“I’m telling you, authoritatively, speaking on behalf of the governor, that those charges are untrue,” said Fehrnstrom, a longtime Romney aide. “They’re baseless.”

“Beneath the dignity of his office” is how Mitch McConnell described Reid’s floor speech this morning. One interesting footnote in all this: Unless I missed a story somewhere, no one of any consequence is defending Reid even though his point about Mitt’s tax returns is squarely in line with the White House’s basic messaging. I wonder if that’s because, with even famous liberals turning on him, there’s too much risk in taking his side or if it’s because Reid agreed behind closed doors to serve as lightning rod for the Dems in pushing this smear out there. As noted yesterday, he specializes in sleazy attacks during presidential campaigns. He’s probably enjoying this. Who needs allies in that case?

The other question: Is Romney right that the White House put Reid up to it? Probably, but like I say, Reid’s a rodent when it comes to this sort of thing. Axelrod probably figured that he’d find his way to a smear like this on his own, in due time. Hey, maybe Ax was the mysterious “Bain investor” who called Reid up and told him that Romney’s been ducking his tax obligations. That’d be all Dingy needs to go to the press with it.

Two clips here, one of Romney and the other via Mediaite of Rush Limbaugh having fun with Reid’s “logic.”

He’s probably enjoying this.

Of course he is. As Senate Leader he is untouchable. And he is not up for reelection for four years. He doesn’t care about his image and reputation.

The slimy sleazy corrupt POS has almost nothing to lose.

This is the new face of the Democratic Party. Old timer Democrats who had some sense of dignity, decency, and decorum must be ashamed and quietly embarrassed, or turning in their graves, over the campaign their party is now waging.

The Chicago Party and their ilk have has taken over the party.

The only real danger here is if Romney really didn’t pay any tax for a period of years. Even if legal, it would have a negative effect politically.

sharrukin on August 2, 2012 at 8:47 PM

He would not be the only one. I mean think about it…half the country does not pay income taxes…I doubt this is true anyway. Romney makes too much money to completely avoid taxes.

Dude,

Get some mental health help, quick, before 0bamacare kicks in and you have to wait 12 months. You need your meds. Stat.

I’d think that Romney’s return has been audited several years in a row. And any questions answered by those that manage his blind trust. It isn’t like he had Timmy Geithner doing his taxes on TurboTax for him.

Additionally, IF Romney’s team found a way for him to legally not pay taxes, that’s awesome! That’s the kind of leadership we need…one that thinks and plans, not one that schemes, deludes and deflects.

ProfShadow on August 2, 2012 at 9:10 PM

News flash, dippy: Romney is holding back the tax returns for the same reason Obama held back his birth certificate. He’s waiting for the accusations to reach a crescendo, especially in ads, so that he can release them and show that they’re perfectly clean. He’ll make Reid and Obama look like utter fools.

Forget Mitt’s tax returns.

Almost four days into increasingly persistent allegations that #HarryReidIsAPederast, this afternoon Google had almost 11,000,000 hits for “Harry Reid Pederast”, and still Harry Reid continues to stonewall those serious allegations with very, very telling silence.

If he doesn’t speak up and release every single record pertaining to his life then how can we know that those allegations are untrue?

I don’t think the burden should be on the ones making the allegations, the burden should be on HIM to prove that he’s innocent of raping children. Using his own logic, that is.

Harry Reid: Have you stopped raping little boys? Inquiring minds demand to know.

Any leaking of IRS tax returns would also likely take place in the context of PAC ads reminding people that the IRS will be the Obamacare enforcers, which will only add to the IRS image problem.

The IRS may have been surpassed by the TSA as the most despied federal agency, but few voters are going to like the idea that IRS employees are leaking returns in an attemp to sway an election.

Uppereastside is too stupid to know that you are making fun of him/her… but she/she is a liberal so I am repeating myself by calling him/her stupid…

mnjg on August 2, 2012 at 9:41 PM

This is true…where would Obama be without stupid people?

Terrye on August 2, 2012 at 9:47 PM

Here’s my question… What the hell do Mitt Romney’s personal tax records have to do with official Senate business???? I mean seriously, we taxpayers aren’t here to supply idiots like Harry Reid with a private platform for him to grind his own political ax.

And how is it that a government official should demand a citizen relinquish his private “papers” without warrant? Do Democrats on the Hill not have access to copies of the U.S. Constitution? Because honestly, I’m starting to think that every American who thinks Harry Reid and his Democrat flunkies have never read a copy… should mail one.

Murf76 on August 2, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Yeastie Noyz is not real smart when it comes to the law. Like many, he actually believes that the 4 dissenting Justices in Citizens United agreed with him that corporations are not persons under the law, do not have First Amendment rights, and money is not speech.

They didn’t.

Yeastie and those like him believe that corporate personhood was something dreamed up by the “Radical Roberts Court” (I agree with him. The Roberts Court is radical, but not because of Citizens. Rather, it is because it pulled a new, previously-unknown, never-before-found in the COTUS tax out of its ass to uphold Obamacare) even though corporations have been putative persons since 1819.

The way the democrats are playing this tax return game; if Mitt Romney had decided not to take a salary as Governor they would accuse him of tax evasion on the unpaid salary.

meci on August 2, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Here’s a thought. Maybe Team Romney has Obama’s transcripts by now. Maybe they have some other very interesting information from Obama’s past he wanted to keep secret.

This Game, the game Team Obama and the Chicago Gang have chosen to play, can be played by both sides.

The business world can be nasty, and Romney knows it well.

Maybe there are one or more Dems insiders who, now that they have seen what Obama really is, might quietly and discreetly help Team Romney. Obama and the Chicago Gang may have made some enemies within, considering how they operate. And it’s not like Romney is Huckabee or Santorum. Economically and financially sophisticated Dems may not fear a Romney Presidency.

I wonder if any Bushies made a copy of Obama’s passport records before they left office.

Kind of fun to release them in late October. Who would pay any attention to another “blame Bush”? More likely the Clintons would get the blame. Heh.

Wethal on August 2, 2012 at 9:14 PM

The Bush family plays too nice for that, but Hillary would have been kicking herself in 2008 for not seeing that little Bammie was on track to compete with them. Janet Reno could have written the Clintons a true biography on little Bammie when Billy was still president.

hahaha, the Dim campaign is shit scared that Adelson threatened to sue them for the Chinese prostitution allegations, and now the Dims have just issued a retraction lool :)…whose next issuing a retraction + an apology, Dingy Harry, by any chance :-)…

you gotta love this:

“In press statements issued on June 29 and July 2, 2012, the DCCC made unsubstantiated allegations that attacked Sheldon Adelson, a supporter of the opposing party. This was wrong. The statements were untrue and unfair and we retract them. The DCCC extends its sincere apology to Mr. Adelson and his family for any injury we have caused,” the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said in an unusual statement released on Thursday afternoon’.

Not leak? Federal law?

Dude…are you aware what this president has done so far? Every agency leaks like a sieve, and guns were sold to drug cartels.

MadisonConservative on August 2, 2012 at 8:42 PM

This is true…however, this might be a bridge too far even for Obama. It might actually back fire on him. No doubt he is capable of it, but this is actually the sort of stuff that can lead to impeachment.

Beware the Jobs Report of July

By BINYAMIN APPELBAUM

The American economy almost certainly shed more than a million jobs last month, just as it does every July. But that’s not the “jobs number” that will get most of the attention when the Bureau of Labor Statistics speaks Friday morning.

Why hasn’t Harry Reid addressed this very serious issue? Could it be that he has something to hide. Is it true that Harry Reid molested his four sons when they were minors?

Only the sworn testimony of each of Reid’s sons will answer this important question.

slickwillie2001 on August 2, 2012 at 9:50 PM

Bammie wasn’t even in the state legislature, IIRC, when the Clintons were in power. He was not on their radar. And yes, I expect they were kicking themselves for not having decent oppo on him. Rev. Wright attacks could have been done through surrogates so the Clintons could feign innocence.

What I wish is that Romney would respond to this worn-out misdirection by saying: Sure, I release my tax forms dating back ten years on the immoveable condition that Barack Obama release his complete collegiate academic record to the public. I am 99% certain that Romney has paid all requisite taxes. But I am also 99% certain that the Obama machine has locked up his academic records for good reason.

So, please, Mitt, call his bluff. They want your tax returns in order to go on a fishing expedition. Toss the ball back at them and say, sure, I wouldn’t mind doing a little fishing myself.

minnesoter on August 2, 2012 at 9:58 PM

The only way they won’t show up is if Obama has a comfortable lead 2 weeks before election day.

Uppereastside on August 2, 2012 at 9:32 PM

You know I actually agree with you on that score. If those returns show up it’ll be because a sleazy operator clinging to the bowels of the DNC will illegally get his paws on them to do so.

Besides, UES, if Romney releases his returns, so what?

Lets play “What If”? If it turns out that Romney didn’t pay his taxes, I think it’ll hurt the Administration a hell of a lot worse than Romney.

Besides the small fact that the Secretary of the Treasury and head of the Ways & Means committee had…challenges./..when filling out their tax returns, I don’t remember hearing the President or anyone on the DNC side calling for their removal…did you?

Or, how about, outside of the last 4 years while he’s in the national spotlight, there have been no widespread releases of the returns of either the President or the First Lady (assuming they filed separately).

How about the fact that prior to becoming the President, a land deal with a rather shady fellow named Tony Rezko?

Or all those “unverified” foreign donations to the 2008 campaign coffers?

We could go on n on, but I’m SURE you understand the bottom line here right?

Right?

You can get a feel for the internal polls by what the campaigns are doing.

How organized their messaging is.

How much money they’re burning through.

Where the money is being spent.
