Romney to Harry Reid on tax claims: Put up or shut up

posted at 8:19 pm on August 2, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via the Daily Caller, a nice answer to a question Romney was ready for. Fehrnstrom was ready too on Fox this morning:

“This reminds me of the McCarthy hearings back in the 1950s,” Eric Fehrnstrom said on Fox News. “And it was another son from Massachusetts, Joseph Welch, who finally asked the question that should be asked of Harry Reid, which is, ‘Have you no sense of decency, sir?’ Is there nothing that you won’t do in the name of dirty politics? I think it’s just shameful.”…

“I’m telling you, authoritatively, speaking on behalf of the governor, that those charges are untrue,” said Fehrnstrom, a longtime Romney aide. “They’re baseless.”

“Beneath the dignity of his office” is how Mitch McConnell described Reid’s floor speech this morning. One interesting footnote in all this: Unless I missed a story somewhere, no one of any consequence is defending Reid even though his point about Mitt’s tax returns is squarely in line with the White House’s basic messaging. I wonder if that’s because, with even famous liberals turning on him, there’s too much risk in taking his side or if it’s because Reid agreed behind closed doors to serve as lightning rod for the Dems in pushing this smear out there. As noted yesterday, he specializes in sleazy attacks during presidential campaigns. He’s probably enjoying this. Who needs allies in that case?

The other question: Is Romney right that the White House put Reid up to it? Probably, but like I say, Reid’s a rodent when it comes to this sort of thing. Axelrod probably figured that he’d find his way to a smear like this on his own, in due time. Hey, maybe Ax was the mysterious “Bain investor” who called Reid up and told him that Romney’s been ducking his tax obligations. That’d be all Dingy needs to go to the press with it.

Two clips here, one of Romney and the other via Mediaite of Rush Limbaugh having fun with Reid’s “logic.”

OK, I’ll play.

Tell us where you think those tax returns will “show up”.

Will they be “reported” by a Democrat bird cage liner like the NY Times, or the WaPo, which had to get a $500,000 grant the other day from the Ford Foundation to keep their newsroom alive?

Or will they be breathlessly “reported” by The Most Busted Name in News, CNN?

And how is it that a government official should demand a citizen relinquish his private “papers” without warrant? Do Democrats on the Hill not have access to copies of the U.S. Constitution? Uppereastside on August 2, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Yup.

We’re already well aware of the fact that Barack Obama is a) amoral, b) narcissistic, and c) desperate.

Most conservatives I know are under the assumption that Obama and his filthy ilk, in complete violation of the law, have already rifled through and are searching every single ounce of IRS documentation having anything to do with Romney, his supporters, anything.

And know that the minute they leak anything, the election is over.

For them.

The American public made it clear today that the right uniformly believes, and enough of the wreckage of what used to be the Democratic Party also, that there is still a right and a wrong in the universe.

Rifling through and using your governmental position to access tax records for the purposes of punishing people politically is WAY on the wrong side.

And if they pull it, I suggest that the first act of new President Romney and the GOP-majority congress is to make all tax records of political candidates and current officials public record.

And watch as the Obama Party implodes and is buried under its own hypocrisy.

northdallasthirty on August 2, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Seems to me Romney is playing into the Obama campaign’s ads. He’s spending time attacking Harry Reid, someone most Americans wouldn’t recognize and it only brings more attention to the tax issue. Which isn’t a loser for him, but adds to the composite of him as a cagey rich guy who is hiding something. Its pretty brilliant politics by Obama to use Reid as the attack dog on issues like this, *thats* machine politics for you. Romney’s engaging in a little bit of the Streisand effect.

“Beneath the dignity of his office” is how Mitch McConnell described Reid’s floor speech this morning.

That doesn’t begin to cover it. I would think Reid’s words are legally actionable, and that at the very least McConnell should say Reid should be reprimanded by the Senate.

Actually, he hasn’t bothered much with Reid; he’s simply pointed out that it’s Barack Obama telling the lies.

Which is OK for you, libfreeordie, because racist fascists like yourself insist that black people should be allowed to lie as much as they want. After all, you think it’s racist to judge based on character, and demand that people give you whatever you want based on your skin color.

No. They won’t. There’s nothing objectionable in them and why in the world would Obama toss out useless tax returns after badgering for them for months?

Not really. Most analysts – both professional and Internet-armchair – concluded that since Obama would just use the tax records to hammer him anyway, he probably figures he will gain nothing by playing into Obama’s hand and should just let them say what they’re gonna say anyway.

I have to say, though, open accusations of felony tax evasion and fraudulent SEC reporting, that even I did not expect.

The Schaef on August 3, 2012 at 8:59 AM

Does anybody remember, back when Barack Hussein Obama was spending millions to hide his birth certificate? Whenever anyone asked why that might be, the media instantly diagnosed him as criminally insane.

Don’t feel too bad if that slipped your mind. About half the population of the country can’t keep anything in their heads that they haven’t heard repeated at least a few hundred times on TV in the past month.

logis on August 3, 2012 at 9:25 AM

We have known for decades that every Republican Presidential candidate has to submit to a complete anal probe including, at the VERY least, publication of his or her tax records. But the appeasers kept saying over and over again: “Don’t worry; Romney is just as non-threatening to the media than McCain was. So we know they won’t bring out the long knives this time.”

The media let this slide during the primaries because they WANTED Republicans to nominate a candidate who can’t attack Barack Hussein Obama on the gaping holes in his background, almost as much as they wanted the only Republican candidate who can’t attack Obamacare.

logis on August 3, 2012 at 9:32 AM

TV dimmies like Kilmeade will on one day knock Romney for not responding to attacks by Barry/Axelrod/Harry Reid, and when he did respond to the despicable personal attack, Kilmeade was bellyaching this morning that Romney should not have responded. How many sides of the mouths those TV talking heads have?

Glenn Beck is on fire this morning… multiple anonmynous phone calls saying that Dingy Harry is:

1. A pedophile rapist — someone that actually rapes pedophiles

2. Has been stealing the Starz movie channel and should release his cable bill for the last 10 years.

3. Actually he is a pedophile as well and the raping of the pedophiles is consensual.

4. Reid actually wears women’s underwear.

5. Reid has his way with chickens in the back of his limo.

None of this can be confirmed of course…but the burden is on Dingy Reid to prove it’s not true!

The difference between what Reid was saying about Mitt and what Rush was saying about Obama is that Rush was probably telling the true story. I’ll bet Obozo probably did make the lowest grades in the class. I hope Mitt doesn’t listen to the establishment RINOs urging him to release his tax records. Obama was only ever elected because he found things to smear his opponents on and Romney doesn’t have that kind of record. The Dems are desperate and hoping Mitt will give them his tax returns. They are probably normal but the Dems would spin them any way they could. I wouldn’t give them anything. None of their business. The Dems are so desperate that they are openly trying to disenfranchise the military vote. We know what they are doing about ID voter laws. The Dems are as lowdown as a rattlesnake and just as dangerous.

I think Senator Reid has, in his estimation, nothing to lose and something to gain from his “accusations”. He was re-elected in 2010 so he won’t stand for election until 2016 by which time he may think that it won’t really hurt him. In addtion, he’ll be 75-76 so he has the real option of choosing to retire.

With little to lose, he can make, what he thinks is, a contribution in support of his party and President.
