Official Chick-fil-A statement: Yesterday was “unprecedented”

Last night’s question answered: Yep, they’re formally acknowledging Appreciation Day.

We are very grateful and humbled by the incredible turnout of loyal Chick-fil-A customers on August 1 at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country. Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day was not a company promotion; it was initiated by others.

We congratulate local Chick-fil-A Owner/Operators and their team members for striving to serve each and every customer with genuine hospitality.

While we don’t release exact sales numbers, it was an unprecedented day.

The Chick-fil-A culture and 66-year-old service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.

Our goal is simple: to serve great food, provide genuine hospitality and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.

That’s from Steve Robinson, executive VP of marketing. An earlier version of this statement apparently described it as a “record-setting day,” which jibes with what Dan Cathy told Rick Warren yesterday. Not sure why the language would have changed; probably their PR guys just preferred “unprecedented” for stylistic reasons, since it better captures the atmosphere of the event. “Record-setting” is cold and bottom line. “Unprecedented” speaks to the spirit of the enthusiasm.

Either way, here’s what a friend received when she went to CFA today:

Here in San Diego, the local CFA was jam-packed with people who were just there to buy good food, promote the free market, and enjoy the nice weather. There was no pushing, no fighting, no honking, no protesters and no stress.

There were also no chicken strips left by the time I got up to place an order, but I swallowed my rage, kept my gun in the holster, and ordered the nuggets instead.

This is why you guys are so self-defeating, Adam Smith and those like you. As a libertarian, I don’t care what consenting adults do to themselves or to each other. I am pro-SSM. Hell, I am not even opposed to triads. The problem is that you go out of your way to be intolerant, hateful and belligerent to people of faith (not me, I’m an atheist). I might support SSM, but it is not an issue that would ever drive me to the polls…especially as long as you and your comrades continue to employ the militant tactics that you do.

Go ahead and have your kiss-ins. No one cares. You don’t make people uncomfortable. You just look childish.

Just know that the hate emanating from the militant gay rights activists and the desire to impose your opinion on all while silencing opposing views are hurting your cause.

Like me, there are many people who approve of SSM as is demonstrated in numerous opinion polls, but unlike many of us, there are many more that are motivated to go to the polls and vote solely on the issue of SSM, which is why you are 0-32 on the matter when it has been put before the voters.

Your cause may be just, but your tactics make all of you unsympathetic. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr, you are not. I would have been driven to the polls because of their plight. They were honourable, peaceful people without hate. You? Not so much.

Isn’t the “8.2 percent” the number that the feds come up with for those on those receiving unemployment insurance money? Given his role as CFO for him to have been fired they must certainly have a clause of some kind covering behavior to just axe him, and if so it would be a justified termination and he wouldn’t be eligible for unemployment insurance. So he may actually be part of the much higher but invisible number of unemployed.

I went today for lunch after going to Wal-Mart in NE Tenn. I was going to get the Chicken Club, but they were out of bacon. I switched over to the Spicy Chicken and asked for a lemonade. They were out lemonade too. Thankfully, they still had peach shakes. While at the drive thru, there was a small truck in back unloading cases of food.

I asked how good yesterday was to an assistant manager. She replied they went over $25,000. That’s great!!

While I am proud that an American business owner stood firm in his right to express his constitutional right to free speech, this episode is not what I would think as good business practice. Most businesses seek to be neutral in regard to political matters so to avoid detrimental impact of their brand and profits. While this short term sale explosion is tremendous, I think that the franchise has been permanently scarred by this episode, and while I think Mr. Cathy has served both his business and community with pride and distinction, I think that it would be in the best interest of both the corporation and the employees that Mr. Cathy resign his position as president and CEO, and let the process of repairing and rebuilding the brand begin. On a personal note, while I am indifferent to the issue of gay marriage/marriage equality, and find the entire “gay rights” movement absurd, unnecessary and redundant, there have been some very despicable things said in regards to gay and lesbian Americans that have absolutely no place in the American Christian Church. One of the defining characteristics about conservative Americans, such as the ones that have shown their support for an American business in peril, is their kindness, thoughtfulness, patriotism and devotion to common human compassion and decency, qualities that are absent on the American left. To watch my political brothers-in-arms sink to the pit of hatred and bile so common place in liberalism is untenable and utterly unacceptable.

Vante regrets the unfortunate events that transpired yesterday in Tucson between our former CFO/Treasurer Adam Smith and an employee at Chick-fil-A. Effective immediately, Mr. Smith is no longer an employee of our company.

The actions of Mr. Smith do not reflect our corporate values in any manner. Vante is an equal opportunity company with a diverse workforce, which holds diverse opinions. We respect the right of our employees and all Americans to hold and express their personal opinions, however, we also expect our company officers to behave in a manner commensurate with their position and in a respectful fashion that conveys these values of civility with others.
