Gail Collins: Boy, Republicans are wicked extreme
posted at 2:31 pm on August 2, 2012 by Dustin Siggins
In her column today, New York Times author Gail Collins launched into a tirade against Ted Cruz, the Tea Party, and Republican (especially Texas) voters in general. While Collins’ disdain for conservatives is no surprise — her February 8 column against the Catholic Church’s position on the contraception/abortifacient/sterilization mandate was similarly caustic — this piece is just asking for a full rebuttal.
First, Cruz served Texas as its Solicitor General, and clerked for the Supreme Court. Which means he knows the Constitution pretty darn well. Collins, of course, barely gave this a glance in her dismissal of Cruz, writing “Also, he memorized the Constitution in high school.” Give me a break.
Second, Collins mocks Cruz and the Tea Party by writing that “we don’t really need to go over his basic agenda because you can pretty much guess it. (Hint: cutspendingshrinkgovernmentrepealObamacare.)” This is true, and is as it should be. Cutting spending, shrinking government, and repealing the health care law are three of the four top things all federal politicians should be focused on right now. But perhaps Collins prefers Obama’s basic agenda of “Hopeychangeyblamebushblameeveryonebutmyselfraisetaxes?”
Collins’ take on the Senate Republican caucus is particularly entertaining. To wit:
Cruz’s victory was the latest in a number of Tea Party triumphs in Republican primaries, and it certainly does suggest that next year the Republican Senate contingent will be composed almost entirely of right-wing purists and people who are afraid they’re going to be primaried by a right-wing purist.
Of course, this isn’t even close to true. Less than two-thirds of Republican senators opposed the recent farm bill, and the Senate GOP leadership isn’t exactly jumping behind the Tea Party Caucus or its budget proposal. Additionally, even conservative Members such as Coburn and Pat Toomey have been willing to significantly compromise when it came to proposals to balance the budget, and Rubio garnered significant controversy recently when he put forth a modified DREAM Act proposal.
Next, of course, Collins calls for bipartisanship:
It’s so ironic, people. The national electorate is totally turned off by partisan standoffs. You can almost hear the public imploring, will you guys please just make some back-room deals? And, at that same moment, the Republican candidates are being pushed into being more and more intractable.
I don’t know where Collins is getting her information, but back-room deals are exactly why the Tea Party movement and the basically-defunct Occupy “movement” exist in the first place. And when it comes to being intractable, nobody is better at that than Reid, who has decided to break the law regarding a federal budget for the fourth fiscal year in a row.
Nothing excites liberals like a little racial insensitivity (but only if it’s against Republicans!), so Collins’ next point fits right in with the liberal meme:
Take that, Republicans! We’ll see you one Cuban-American Harvard Law graduate who memorized the Constitution when he was in high school and raise you Mexican-American twins who went to Harvard Law and got elected mayor and state representative! The race for the Hispanic vote goes on, and we will try to avoid mentioning that virtually the only thing all three of these people have in common is an inability to speak fluent Spanish.
Finally, Collins completely misses the boat on what’s wrong with the Republican Party.
Maybe the real answer to this and all the other Tea Party-over-establishment upsets is that the traditional Republican party is just burned out, and devoid of fresh faces.
Yeah, the upsets are because the GOP is burned out and devoid of fresh faces. Or it’s because the last GOP President and many of his congressional counterparts grew government, ran then-massive deficits, passed TARP, raised the cost and number of earmarks, and ran two wars badly. Or it’s because the Republican Party has generally become both more liberal and more corrupt.
Collins apparently threw her opinion into the mix on “Morning Joe” today, and was immediately ripped apart by Coburn for making similar criticisms of the Tea Party. The senator told her she ought to go and actually meet some Tea Partiers, but given that her opinions seem to be inside the liberal cocoon typical of NY Times columnists, I think Collins would prefer to sit back and lob unsubstantiated, uneducated attacks. It’s a lot easier than doing the work of actual research, or meeting one of the unwashed masses Collins clearly disdains.

Rubio (and the rest of the GOP in Congress) are really nothing more than conservative bloggers who get to use the choo choo train at the Capitol.
AllahP and Ed could do as well. Real bloggers say “somebody should do something”. Our Congresscritters do no more than that.

Rubio and the Pubs need to just shut up.
Realistically, crap like this only feeds the ‘politicization’ meme.
Just shut up and do what you’re supposed to do.
Stay away from the cameras, don’t go on talk shows, and quit advertising yourselves.

Wigglesworth on May 16, 2013 at 12:42 PM
This maybe the first time since 1776 that we have seen a power based government in full retreat.
1. What has caused it?
2. Up coming 2014 mid term election?
3. Picked on the press?
4. All to many scandals?
5. The bloggers?
Don’t know. Don’t really care. It is a good thing that it is occurring.
I’ve been at this fighting the “Big Gov.” for over 50 years now. Some times with some degree of success.
WARRINGS:
1. THE POWERS will try to keep the scandals separate. this keeps the interest in any one scandal to a below 50% in the public polls. That way they can say “What Difference Does It Make” no one really cares. This also closes the issue that when all the dots are connected, point to the First Tuesday in November 2012.
2. THE POWERES will next change from the “Defend” mode to the “Discovery” mode. This is an attempt to show “How can we be the bad guys if we find the problems”.
3. THE POWERS will put out so many minor controversies as to cloud the real issues.
Now the big concerns. The government often works in “Mysterious Ways” that we some times find difficult to understand and may seem like a scandal but in reality is a government working as it should. If we jump on every controversy then the “THE POWERS” will just stand by and hand out tin foil hats at a major rate and will be able to get away with all of this.
To win back our government we need to stand the line on real scandals, the ones that matter and go for the truth. Not allowing the momentum to be diluted with trivia.

“The latest Public Policy Polling data bears sobering news for Senator Marco Rubio, showing his support among conservatives has substantially decreased since last month.
When asked for their preferred GOP candidate, only 17% of “very conservative” respondents favored Rubio, while only 18% of “somewhat conservative” respondents favored Rubio.
This is a steep decline from the same poll’s findings in April, when Rubio’s support was 26% among the“very conservative” and 22% among the “somewhat conservative.”
The survey was conducted between May 6–9th. The survey released in April was conducted between March 27–30th. The “Gang of 8″ bill, spearheaded by Senator Rubio, was released April 17th.
Notably, Rubio’s support among Hispanics also appears to have decreased following the unveiling of the “Gang of 8″ bill. The previous poll demonstrated 39% of Hispanics had a favorable view of Rubio, while the latest poll demonstrates that number has decreased to 34%…”

“The president doesn’t have clean hands in this,” Marco Rubio said this morning of the IRS scandal. ”This organization of his, this administration has created a culture of intimidation.”
The Administration “created a culture of intimidation”? That culture was learned perfected by the Community Organizer long before he became president. The educated voting public knew a lot of this before the Community Organizer was elected the first time but starry eyes and platitudes trumped serious consideration of the Community Organizers leadership abilities and management skills.
Our “elected” Republican leaders lead from behind as much as the Community Organizer.

Yes, Senator Blinded By The Obvious.
One of the major reasons we peasants out here in Flyover Country oppose “immigration reform” is that we have learned the hard way that you and your cronies in The Only Places That Matter (DC, NYC, LA, etc.) will tell us one thing, and then do something entirely different. And every time, it’s something that furthers your “DREAM” of making this country look more like…Europe.
Somehow, we just don’t believe that’s a good idea. What with Europe having spawned most of the major wars on Earth for the last several centuries, and all. And also with European governments’ irritating tendencies to treat their subjects like sheep, to be shorn as desired and then made into mutton when they no longer produce enough wool to suit their
ownersleaders. We know you don’t like us- because we’re not exactly like you. And we know that the regard of your fellow Members of the Club counts for more in your mind than your responsibility to do what your constituents sent you there to do- and, more importantly, to prevent.
You should just be aware that your job isn’t a lifetime sinecure’. And that even if you think you can always get 50% + 1 votes to stay in it, there are other ways to fire you.
It’s amazing what can be done with a recall petition. Think about it.

Speaking of the IRS scandal … in a live press conference Obama just made it about himself — he said he’s a public figure, so that he might be a target of future administrations, so that we’re all vulnerable.
I’m amazed that he’s making this about himself, to the point of conveying the sentiment “of course I’m interested in correcting this problem with the IRS, because it could affect me in the future”. I mean, what towering narcissism.

Ot Dear Leader: I did not know about the IG report until it was released…
He did not answer the question posed to him…
Better question: What did Valerie Jarrett know and when did she know it..?

If you were Obama, and you were involved in all of this malfeasance and Dereliction of Duty, would you want an Independent Counsel appointed?

What I find so sadly funny is that liberal ‘males’ think they’re somehow superior to Conservative men who provide for their wives and children, by the sweat of their brows.

He’s covering for those in the White House and others that either knew or directed the IRS actions…

Man, you narrowed it down to three? Tough one; where do Biden, Geithner, Bernanke, Sebelius, Napolitano, the interior guy, the energy guy, fall?

I knew he was done when he started running ads on the Rush Limbaugh Show trying to generate support; that turkey’s dead, stick a fork in it.

The only thing you need to know about the IRS Scandal just came out of Obama’s mouth as a result of the very 1st question:
I do NOT support an Independent Counsel taking over the IRS scandal administration – the INTERNAL investigation promised by Holder, the guy who perpetrated 3 Felony counts of Perjury before Congress & the 1st Atty General in U.S. History to be CENSURED, will be good enough!

Agreed. Just nice to have it as a thread in case you want to go back and look later instead of remembering what sub-thread it is on.

BHO can’t talk about this pending case…what about all the other pending cases he has jumped into and not only discussed but tried to influence public opinion…
We not only have a cancer on the presidency…we have a cancer as the president.

Bat face had a few drops on his shoulders. It has quit sprinkling now. He shooed off the Marines. Wasn’t very polite, no surprise there. I haven’t actually seen bat face live in a while. My word he is grayer than ever. Time for a dye job.
