NYT notices Obama campaign’s increasing desperation for contributions

posted at 12:26 pm on August 1, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Politicians use their e-mail lists to continually hit their base with requests for donations.  Everyone who puts their name on a political list expects to see those e-mails on a constant basis, usually tied to the news cycle.  Michele Bachmann’s campaign is particularly adept at this, with missives that start by saying something like this completely hypothetical opening sentence: “Senate Democrats passed a tax increase on job creators last week, so it’s more important than ever to have me in the House fighting for our economic health.”  That kind of moment-to-moment marketing approach both uses potential flash points to encourage donations, and sends a more subtle message that the politician is focused like a laser on his or her job.

Barack Obama’s campaign contribution e-mails send a less-subtle subtext message, the New York Times’ Michael Shear reports — desperation:

The dire hand-wringing is partly tactical for a campaign that is likely to have more than enough money to execute its strategy. By appearing desperate, Mr. Obama’s campaign hopes it can persuade more of its supporters to donate now, rather than later. …

Regardless of the real impact on Mr. Obama’s campaign operations, there’s an image problem to worry about.

The appeals for donations occasionally recall the “Everything 80 percent off! Going out of Business” sales that try to entice customers into the store. And yet, Mr. Obama’s campaign team has clearly calculated that it is willing to risk leaving that kind of impression if it means raising more money.

One of the many e-mails sent by the Obama campaign to supporters on Monday had the subject line: Romney defeats Obama?

Some of the desperation is marketing strategy, but most of it is real, Shear notes.  Team Romney/RNC outraised Team Obama/DNC in both May (by $17 million) and June (by $37 million).  There is no indication that July will be any different.  Obama’s campaign apparently never figured that they could be outraised one-on-one by a Republican candidate, although most people figured that the GOP would gain an edge with outside-group spending.  Now it looks like Obama will get buried — and his 3:1 spending lead of the last three months has failed to slow Romney’s momentum.  Hence, the panic that has flooded into their campaign missives.

The problem with that kind of marketing strategy is that it presupposes Obama to be a loser.  Americans love underdogs — in sports.  Remember Morrissey’s Axiom: In love and politics, desperation is not an aphrodisiac.  We have a strong tendency to jump on bandwagons when the direction of an election becomes clear, buying into what the perceived final outcome will be.  By showering their e-mail base with messages of desperation and panic, Team Obama is more likely to demoralize and disincentivize their base, especially given their utter failure to demonize Mitt Romney with the Bain attacks.

On the other hand, we can’t be too critical of this strategy.  In a campaign that keeps trying to sell Romney as a scary vampire capitalist who eats jobs and may even be a felon!!1!11!, the desperation strategy may be the most honest approach Team Obama has tried over the last three months.

The union money went to topple Scott Walker in WI. It went to finance the DNC convention in a right-to-work state. In short, the backroom version of Obama’s everybody pay a little more involves Axelrod trying to wring a fair share out of those “greedy” unions.

But your post gives me a great fundraising idea for Obama. Instead of inserting himself in Presidential biographies, if you donate enough the White House will insert your name/message in the biography of your choice. Something along the lines of ” In 1933 FDR started the series of programs that would ultimately be called the New Deal and Mort Schmuckelberg was born in Racine, WI.” Or- In 1989, KitKat Karpet Kleaning opened its first store in Des Moines and GHWB oversaw the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I really don’t think there is enough money on the planet to get the criminal past Romney, his policy’s have split the country in two or three pieces. The ppl of America have woke up from the nightmare of this administration, well most of us anyway……..,..

New Obama campaign plea for donations:

“You didn’t create that money in your bank account, the government did. Give it back.”

I’m guessing the Or Else is silent.

Pretty soon, network anchors will have tip jars on their desks.

t8stlikchkn on August 1, 2012 at 1:20 PM

It has already happened. Remember 2008? Dem candidates were lined up for miles to get a photo-op and share a stage with the man. There were swoonings on the hour at every event. Schoolchildren were literally writing songs of praise of O-BAM-A.

In 2010, Air Force One merely crossing a candidate’s district causes them to promptly evacuate the state for some “previously scheduled event.” Not only does Obama not have coattails in many parts of the nation, he is an anchor.

So with Obama’s campaign a little short of cash the only thing left is a little deficit financing or maybe he can show us how much be believes in himself and will self-finance. (Note: $5000 that he did give will not get a seat a one of his campaign fundraisers — so what kind of example is that to his big dollar contributors?)

The alternative if layoffs (don’t forget 2-month notice) and closing election branches. He should start in Chicago with the 700 employed there figuring Rahm and Pat Quinn have IL covered.

KenInIL on August 1, 2012 at 1:29 PM

The best part of this is… I mean the most delicious part is, if this gap is as big as it appears it could be in early October, the DNC has to start deciding if it bails on Team Liar, and starts directing funds to races in non-swing states.

Bury them, Mitt…

JohnGalt23 on August 1, 2012 at 1:35 PM

I think he and his cabal are pissed that they handed out billions on worthless projects, expecting that money to be returned as campaign contributions.

Didn’t happen.

I suspect O will have a lot more flexibility in his plans for the next 4 years after this election than he realizes.

For starters, he won’t have to get up at 0830 anymore, and he’ll have a lot more time for golf.

But think of the damage to the laser industry after 1/20/13.

No worry stupid liberals… Your media will manufacture more and more polls with insane oversampling of Democrats to show Obama is winning… Sleep tight in your delusional world… Everything is going according to plan…
