Harry Reid: This might not be true, but some Bain investor who I won’t name told me Romney didn’t pay income taxes for 10 years

posted at 4:45 pm on July 31, 2012 by Allahpundit

Sounds solid. Mitt Romney, who’s been running for political office for 20 years now, decided he’d gamble those prospects and risk time in a federal pen for tax evasion in order to save a few million dollars that he doesn’t need.

And he made this decision year after year, for 10 years.

By the way, some random guy on the Internet told me Obama was born in Kenya. Now, do I know that’s true? Well, I’m not certain. But let me just toss it out there.

“His poor father must be so embarrassed about his son,” Reid said, in reference to George Romney’s standard-setting decision to turn over 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in the late 1960s.

Saying he had “no problem with somebody being really, really wealthy,” Reid sat up in his chair a bit before stirring the pot further. A month or so ago, he said, a person who had invested with Bain Capital called his office.

“Harry, he didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years,” Reid recounted the person as saying.

“He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” said Reid. “But obviously he can’t release those tax returns. How would it look?

“You guys have said his wealth is $250 million,” Reid went on. “Not a chance in the world. It’s a lot more than that. I mean, you do pretty well if you don’t pay taxes for 10 years when you’re making millions and millions of dollars.”

No surprise that Reid would smear Romney so casually. He specializes in these tactics during presidential campaigns. In 2008, he made more noise about McCain’s temper being a sign of possible derangement than any other major Democrat. (He also insisted that he couldn’t stand McCain as part and parcel of the demonization effort, even though the two had been known to socialize.) He’s an unusually nasty character, even by normal political standards, when he wants to be; gratuitously accusing George Romney of being disappointed in his son is simply S.O.P. But he does have a strategy here: Pull an accusation of criminality straight out of his ass and hope it gets enough media play that Romney feels obliged to respond. Either Mitt will start to sweat and release his returns, as Democrats have demanded, in order to disprove Reid’s charge or he’ll sit tight and the smear will circulate online, with Romney’s refusal to disclose the documents taken as “proof” that Reid is right. In that respect, it’s not that different from Birtherism. It just so happens that you’ve got the Senate majority leader pushing this, not some commenter at dKos or wherever.

Exit question via Philip Klein: “How would ‘a person who had invested with Bain Capital’ know about Romney’s personal tax returns anyway?”

This seems like an incredibly stupid thing to point out. But I have to anyway; many times every week:

Any physically full-grown man who tries to tell you what his imaginary friend said should not be in Congress; and should not be running around calling himself a “journalist.”

All of these people should be in INSTITUTIONS. But nothing like the ones they are currently in charge of.

Look I’ve known a lot of different kind of people in my life, and only maybe twice ever had the misfortune to know someone who lies as causally or maliciously as Reid.. Shameless is way too mild.. and the first lib who tells me this, I will call a liar to his face,I’m done suffering the “opinions” of stone cold smear merchants..

Reid has crossed the line so many times, when his career ends, the line to walk past his final resting place to take a leek will be in the millions..

When Mitt was Gov. of Messachusists he refused the salary. Same thing when he salvaged the Salt Lake olympics. Think maybe he’s had a few years where his income has been mainly capital gains rather than salary? Think the MSM would explain that the money invested that earns those capital gains has already been taxed? (and GASP! created jobs!) Think they just might play to the people that have little to no understanding of how the tax system works, implying that he’s done something wrong?
Naaaah, that would never happen.

But this notion that we should respect everyone’s opinion is hogwash.
There comes a point in time where a person with an idiotic opinion needs a verbal beat down.

I disagree. First, I don’t respect everyone’s opinion, but I do respect everyone’s right to EXPRESS their opinion.

And, just as when I express my opinion others are free to discuss that opinion with me, it’s okay to say you believe someone’s opinion is wrong and then back it up with your thoughts. However, verbal beat downs are no better than physical beat downs. It’s not about the person, rather it’s about the issues the person is discussing. The opinion may be stupid, illogical, irrational, not based on facts, etc. but it gives no right to verbally beat or call the person names.

I didn’t back Mitt as my first or second choice, but I’m coming to believe he’s the right man for the right time.. Many reasons, but for one thing, he isn’t afraid to say truths the left hates, calls racist, sexists.. what ever.. Mitt in England, Mitt in Israel, when he said cultrure, not politics deyermine wether a nation succeeds or fails.. is a truth like the kind Reagan would have been fearless in saying out loud, no matter how much the left screams about it.

He’s got courage the kind which isn’t afraid to state the obvious..

We need that, now more than ever.. so I’m supporting Mitt with the same enthusiasm I had for Ron.. He may not be a conservative, he is however an honest man, and right now there are damned few of those.

Well, as I’m finding out, it’s dangerous to say what you think around here, but I’ll do it anyway because I am such a brave woman (and anonymously posting comments on a blog-LOL). During the primaries, I swore I would not vote for Romney no matter what. I held my nose and voted for McCain and I wasn’t going to do it again. I sort of feel like I’m going against my principles by voting for Romney. Did I mean what I said before or not? Obama scares the poop out of me more than I feel dirty for voting for Romney, so I’m going to do it. I even stick up for him sometimes and I try not to say anything negative because the primary is over so what’s the point? It took me awhile to get to this point.

It is still three months before it comes down to actually voting, and I believe that some of the people we are talking about are going to, when it counts, come to the same conclusion you did and I did. I also believe Romney has an obligation to give people a reason to vote for him, and that hasn’t even really started yet. They hate Obama and they love this country and I believe they will do the right thing. I don’t think being hateful toward them will get them to that point any quicker. I could be wrong, but I choose to believe, based on reading this site for years, they are good people.

When an a$$hole is effing with you, sometimes I find it appropriate to label them for what they are.
chumpy, GrowFins, crrap6, inthemiddleofobamasass, etc.. are all nothing but climy trolls who continue to defend the indefensible.
When you defend evil, you are deserving of a personal beat down.
Politics has always been personal bcs in the end, what side you choose reflects your true character as a human being.
And people who are aligned with dirtbags like the many in power today, both Left & Right, are as evil as their politics.

Doesn’t look bad to me…or to anyone I know. And we’re all pretty ‘average’.

Solaratov on August 1, 2012 at 12:14 AM

I have a feeling that you are in the minority on this one. When someone making 20 million a year has a lower tax rate than someone making 50 thousand a year, something is not right. Romney will never release his taxes so we will never know. McCain’s team and the Mormon Church has all of Romney’s tax returns, so an October surprise is always possible.

This is why a flat tax for every citizen makes more sense.
But of course, I doubt that will EVER happen in this country.
But don’t dog Romney for operating within the law.
He gives a lot to charity, so you can consider THAT his ‘tax’ to humanity.
Bcs the LDS church spends it a lot better than the Federal govt spends whatever he gave them, that’s for damn sure.
And let’s not forget that ANYONE’s tax returns are NONE of ANYONE else’s business.
Let the IRS deal with that.

Hilarious.

Because bigot boy ZippyZ never said word one about or criticized Obama Party leader Charles Rangel’s combination of tax and welfare fraud.

Because bigot boy ZippyZ never said word one about the Barack Obama administration being rife with tax cheats.

Because bigot boy ZippyZ never said word one about Barack Obama’s donors dodging BILLIONS in taxes.

ZippyZ on August 1, 2012 at 1:02 AM

And there’s even more than that.

Because bigot boy ZippyZ never said word one about Barack Obama’s Senate leadership dodging taxes – Example A, Example B, and Example C.

And we haven’t even gotten into TurboTax Timmy.

So what it boils down to is this, ZippyZ; unless you IMMEDIATELY denounce your Obama Party for these documented records of tax fraud by its highest elected and appointed officials, you’re nothing but a screaming hypocrite.

Put differently, you support and endorse proven tax cheats, so your attempting to complain about Romney is shown to be nothing more than pure hate, hypocrisy, and bigotry on your part.

So you acknowledged that you don’t know, but you just accused Romney of cheating on his taxes.

That shows how desperately pathological Obama supporters like you are.

There truly is no virtue or value left in the Obama Party. All Obama supporters are like you, desperate people who will say and do anything to hold on to power.

northdallasthirty on August 1, 2012 at 2:13 AM

Third option for the win. Sue Reid for defamation. Force him disclose his non-existent “source”.

By the way, I was told by someone Reid is incompetent and suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s. His statements and actions were said to be heavily influenced by the resulting incompetence. He should probably be removed from office on that basis alone.

Now I don’t know if this is true. I don’t have any first hand knowledge of it. But it seems plausible and may be true.

Marcus Traianus on August 1, 2012 at 6:01 AM

I also believe Romney has an obligation to give people a reason to vote for him, and that hasn’t even really started yet. They hate Obama and they love this country and I believe they will do the right thing.
Night Owl on July 31, 2012 at 9:30 PM

I believe the same, and have been consistently anti-Mitt throughout the primaries. My decision to vote for him was tough in the beginning, but he’s so unlike the craven appeaser McLame (I voted for Palin, BTW, not him), and Mitt’s speeches and comments have been so refreshingly adult that I’m feeling better all the time about this vote. I never felt that way about McLame. Were it not for Palin in 2008 I would have just said “meh” and stayed home. I am still very wary about Mitt’s progressive past being prologue, but the wall is crumbling…just a bit.

Oh, and Harry Reid is a limp d*ck that no amount of Viagra can straighten.

SKYFOX on August 1, 2012 at 6:38 AM

At what point to Mormans kick this piece of garbage out of their church. Last I read, Mormans would be about the last people to condone lying.

MNHawk on August 1, 2012 at 6:57 AM

I read online that Harry Reid might be a pedophile. It might not be true and I can’t confirm it as I have no direct knowledge of it, but it’s true that I read it.

Not-a-Marxist on August 1, 2012 at 7:10 AM

Shh, but I think I know a certain senior senator from Nevada who had a lobotomy in the ’60′s. Word has it the lobotomy made him the sharpest Democrat in the senate. At night, this certain senator opens his skull and dusts his pea-size brain to a grand luster. I don;t know this for sure, but, you know, I’ll throw it out there.

stop2think on August 1, 2012 at 7:17 AM

Harry Reid, Bella Pelosi, Whatshername Schultz, et al aren’t the problem. Cheating, moronic, malicious oligarchs gonna be who they gonna be. The problem is the fellowship of the intellectually corrupt that elects and/or puts up with this crap. In a just world, the fastest and loudest outcry would be from Reid supporters as he has embarrassed them. However, you cannot shame the shameless or lay guilt at the feet of the guiltless.

We on our side are also complicit in buying into this kabuki dance. Reid calls McLame deranged, then the adjourn behind oaken doors to sip martinis. In a just world, the wormy little punk gets his ass kicked.

Mitt Romney is an intelligent, accomplished, successful man who has shown a real capacity to tackle complicated problems and solve them. He is dedicated to his family. And in spite of the ham fisted efforts of the Democrats to cast him as a villain, he has never been touched by scandal.

He is center right and is more conservative than many TruCons give him credit for, but then again a lot of TruCons do not give anyone other than themselves credit for being conservative.

On this recent trip Romney took, he was lambasted by the media for telling the truth. They seem to think they are the ones who get to decide what is and is not a gaffe, what is truth, what is acceptable and what can and can not be said in public. Romney sent them into fits by doing his own thing. He is not the typical pandering pol.

Is he perfect? No, and neither are you and I.

Terrye on August 1, 2012 at 7:55 AM

From what I’ve heard on Twitter it’s possible that #HarryReidIsAPederast. The longer he takes to disprove this rumor, the more likelynit is that it is true.

ZippyZ on August 1, 2012 at 1:02 AM

You do not even know what you are talking about.

For one thing, Americans do not pay taxes on their gross incomes, by the time all the deductions etc are taken into account people making 50 grand a year are paying a tax rate considerably lower than 15%. In fact it is more like 8%, if that.

Terrye on August 1, 2012 at 7:58 AM

I heard from someone that Dingy Harry is a wife beater and a child molester but it might not be true.

BigAlSouth on August 1, 2012 at 9:15 AM

A very highly placed individual in the Vegas and Reno casino business, who I won’t name, told me Reid gets huge, secret campaign fund contributions from casino owners.

farsighted on August 1, 2012 at 9:18 AM

I heard that Harry loves dinning at Chick-fil-A. How long do the Democrats imagine they can keep this secret?

It’s an interesting tactic to tell transparent lies. It will fool a certain number of people, and give them a further reason to dislike the opposition, and it will invite the opposition to repeat the lie in a denial, keeping the lie out there. The fact that it is completely morally corrupt doesn’t seem to bother the Democrats at all. Thus the last two principles that Goebbels set down for propaganda are satisfied:

18. Propaganda must facilitate the displacement of aggression by specifying the targets for hatred.

19. Propaganda cannot immediately affect strong counter-tendencies; instead it must offer some form of action or diversion, or both.

claudius on August 1, 2012 at 9:27 AM

Yes, Harry Reid and the Democrats are Nazis or something…

claudius on August 1, 2012 at 9:29 AM

I was told by a reliable source close to Harry that he has been collecting used underwear that he wears on his head like a mask and then he shoves a feather duster up his behind (after removing his head)and clucks like a chicken.

PatriotPete on August 1, 2012 at 9:36 AM

Harry Reid, who often tells us how he was born dirt poor, is a multi-millionaire. How exactly did this gentleman who, like Lyndon Johnson, spent his entire working life (except for two years) in middlin’ paying jobs in public service manage to parlay his income into millions? Seriously? I think he told us all he was a fabulous “investor”…in which case, he hasn’t paid a cent of income tax on all his income.

Harry is the darling of Las Vegas unions and Las Vegas unions are the foot soldiers of the mob. I think it’s time someone asked Harry some very pointed questions.

In the meantime, if a humble leader of a local Tea Party is on the President’s enemies list and is under investigation by the IRS, I’m PDS Obama’s IRS knows every detail of Romney’s tax returns, which means David Axelrod knows too.

Mr. Romney, do NOT give in to the blackmail. Ask some very pointed questions of your own about Mr. Reid and B. Obama’s shady pasts.

Alberta_Patriot on August 1, 2012 at 2:08 AM

I let this one slip by.
But it shows you how deranged and insipidly stupid so many liberals are.
I have never been asked by the LDS church for my tax returns.
They’ve never asked me for anything. Even donations. During services a plate is NEVER passed around. EVER.
There are donation boxes with printed enveloped that have receipts attached to them for donations.
They are never solicited.
But let old Zippy have his fun. He’s not interested in the truth here.

Badger40 on August 1, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Portia46 on August 1, 2012 at 10:36 AM

Mormon’s have an unusual relationship with Vegas, they are very integrated into that city. They are very powerful businessmen so I don’t expect Reid to have as big of influence as one would think.

right2bright on August 1, 2012 at 10:51 AM

I heard from an unnamed source that Harry Reid made a tax deductable donation to NAMBLA and Nancy Pelosi claimed income from selling orphans to Jerry Sandusky. I don’t know if this is true or not but I guess the only way to disprove it if for them release their tax returns for the last 12 years…
