Harry Reid: This might not be true, but some Bain investor who I won’t name told me Romney didn’t pay income taxes for 10 years

posted at 4:45 pm on July 31, 2012 by Allahpundit

Sounds solid. Mitt Romney, who’s been running for political office for 20 years now, decided he’d gamble those prospects and risk time in a federal pen for tax evasion in order to save a few million dollars that he doesn’t need.

And he made this decision year after year, for 10 years.

By the way, some random guy on the Internet told me Obama was born in Kenya. Now, do I know that’s true? Well, I’m not certain. But let me just toss it out there.

“His poor father must be so embarrassed about his son,” Reid said, in reference to George Romney’s standard-setting decision to turn over 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in the late 1960s.

Saying he had “no problem with somebody being really, really wealthy,” Reid sat up in his chair a bit before stirring the pot further. A month or so ago, he said, a person who had invested with Bain Capital called his office.

“Harry, he didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years,” Reid recounted the person as saying.

“He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” said Reid. “But obviously he can’t release those tax returns. How would it look?

“You guys have said his wealth is $250 million,” Reid went on. “Not a chance in the world. It’s a lot more than that. I mean, you do pretty well if you don’t pay taxes for 10 years when you’re making millions and millions of dollars.”

No surprise that Reid would smear Romney so casually. He specializes in these tactics during presidential campaigns. In 2008, he made more noise about McCain’s temper being a sign of possible derangement than any other major Democrat. (He also insisted that he couldn’t stand McCain as part and parcel of the demonization effort, even though the two had been known to socialize.) He’s an unusually nasty character, even by normal political standards, when he wants to be; gratuitously accusing George Romney of being disappointed in his son is simply S.O.P. But he does have a strategy here: Pull an accusation of criminality straight out of his ass and hope it gets enough media play that Romney feels obliged to respond. Either Mitt will start to sweat and release his returns, as Democrats have demanded, in order to disprove Reid’s charge or he’ll sit tight and the smear will circulate online, with Romney’s refusal to disclose the documents taken as “proof” that Reid is right. In that respect, it’s not that different from Birtherism. It just so happens that you’ve got the Senate majority leader pushing this, not some commenter at dKos or wherever.

Exit question via Philip Klein: “How would ‘a person who had invested with Bain Capital’ know about Romney’s personal tax returns anyway?”

“What about your record of corrupt dealings, Mr. Reid,” asked a reporter. Hahahah, that will never happen.
The man is a despicable stain on the politics of our country. Just Google Reid corruption, you can’t possibly read all the charges.

txmomof6 on July 31, 2012 at 6:53 PM

Nope, it’s because they’re hiding the fact that they’re tax cheats and criminals.

If Pelosi and Reid had nothing to hide, they would release the past twenty years of their tax returns.

The fact that they don’t shows that they’re felons and criminals.

Now watch as chumpThreads pisses itself and demonstrates that it’s a hypocritical lying liberal who won’t follow or accept its own rules.

LOL.

If liberals are going to press for the tax returns of presidential candidates, it seems more important to me that those already in office reveal their returns for the time they are in office, to prove they’re not cheating or otherwise illegally benefitting from said position in government.

How about Hillary Clinton’s magical profits from cattle futures?
Does that bother you? She was the 1st lady at the time.
Did Bill clinton using his power & influence to stick a cigar into his young impressionable intern’s female orfice bother you at all?

Well, what about the rest of his wives? I’ve heard that – as a Mormon – ol’ harry feels perfectly justified in having more than one wife. He just keeps the rest of them out of the public eye.

Now, I don’t know if that’s true or not — but it’s what I’ve heard; and it could be true.
One wonders, of course, if it’s true that a couple of those wives are seriously underage. They could be. Or not, as the case may be.

Could someone straighten me out here?

Congress (which the Dems have controlled both houses of every so often) makes the tax laws. The tax laws are so stupid and slanted to special interests, that it is possible for people who make a whole lot of money to not pay any taxes.

So is the problem here about someone smart enough to work the tax system or the stupidity of Congress that allows such games to be played.

Couldn’t Reid and Pelosi have done something to stop such terrible behavior by reforming the tax laws when they had the power to do so?

This is kind of like parents giving their kid the car keys and a fifth of scotch and then blaming the kid when he gets arrested for drunk driving.

Why do some companies have to get into bed with Fed Govt to become profitable?

Here’s the deal with the tax returns. They have already reviewed them and they know what’s there. It a treasure trove of material that burnishes their class warfare tactic. And perfectly in order.

Here’s what Romney and his tax preparers know. As soon as the highly agitated and excitable dems accidentaly leak something that is not in the public domain they have a sweet lawsuit waiting and a meme of releasing private information illegally. Tie that to medical records ala Obamacare and bash ‘em mercilessly.

farsighted on July 31, 2012 at 7:21 PM

You’re about 180 degrees out of phase with reality and perfectly aligned with the poor effort of your dem party. As has been repeated several times, Romney’s tax returns have been thoroughly vetted and all they have is class warfare to work with.

O/T, anybody seeing the next thing about to blow up their faces? Dept of Labor laws require 60 day notifications to employees if more than 500 will be laid off. Defense Dept. estimates are about 120,000 will be newly unemployed as a result of the current sequestration budget that cuts military spending. Linda Solis is performing olympic quality routines trying to keep the pink slips from showing up before the required Nov 3 deadline.

What say you Zippy?

DanMan on July 31, 2012 at 6:34 PM

The budget impasse is over…check the news. In regards to Romney’s taxes being vetted…by whom? I guess you mean McCain because he looked them over supposedly. He vetted Sarah Palin…case closed. But seriously, I doubt McCain poured through too many of the 200 page tax returns. Romney has a 100 million dollar IRA. Romney most likely has dozens of “legal” loopholes that ordinary people can not take advantage of. Many exotic tax instruments by the super rich have been declared illegal many years after they have been used. Romney’s unique type of career and use of aggressive foreign accounts allowed him to structure compensation that allowed him to dodge taxes. It just looks bad to the average American.

ZippyZ on July 31, 2012 at 7:21 PM

You’re still not getting it, Chuck. Try again.

Constant deflection & nothing of substance.
Tell me why Obama should have another 4 years to cripple America?
Why will he be better than Romney?
This is a man who has nothing but contempt for the country of his birth, hell he spent hardly any time in it during his formative years, a man who has succeeding in tearing apart the economy that was already about to swirl the toilet bowl bcs of DEMOCRATIC & RINO actions throughout the DECADES, a man who wants Americans to be slaves to the FederaL govt, a man who clearly despises his constituents & cannot manage even his own household.
Now we look at Romney & his accomplishments & while I do have issues with his Romneycare & the the like, like his stance on farm payments etc, he is clearly a far better choice than Obama who has done nothing but pi$$ & moan & complain & tear this country apart bit by bit.
I cannot understand why ANY Democrat worth a damn would this this POS who constantly does what he says he wouldn’t do is a good choice to run this country.
I’ll tell you what, I didn’t like Bill Clinton at all, but as a centrist, I can appreciate some of the things he did.
And he’s a hell of a lot more competent than your man Obama.

President Jackass McChoomer’s tax records are of no interest to me, he is such a clueless investor and businessman that there can’t be anything there. In the 2008 election however he successfully dodged any release of health records, and continues to this day to hide them.

Given the hideous scarring on the back of his head, and admitting to serious illegal drug use, I believe we should push for a release of complete health records. He is definitely hiding something, and it may affect his performance in office.

Hate to say it, but chumpThreads does have a point on this one. When Romney and his minions said that Gingrich “resigned in disgrace”, that was just hard-hitting politics. Politics ain’t beanbag and all that. When Romney is the target of the same kind of smear job, we’re supposed to be indignant. Sorry, just don’t have any sympathy for Romney when it comes to smear tactics. Live by the smear…

ddrintn on July 31, 2012 at 7:07 PM

I was a Gingrich supporter until the bitter end. I remember being in the arguments about this, and you are quite correct. I said I would laugh when Romney was in this position. I have to say that it’s not that I have sympathy for Romney so much as I really hate Obama and his minions. I would have to put myself in the gryphon202 type camp. I am going to vote for Romney just because the alternative is too awful to think about.
