Quotes of the day

posted at 10:41 pm on July 30, 2012 by Allahpundit

Despite being outspent more than 3-to-1, having never run for office and being tasked with penetrating the Lone Star State’s 20 media markets with virtually zero name recognition, Cruz is well positioned to upset Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst Tuesday. It’s a scenario that would send shockwaves through the political elite and embolden the thousands of conservatives from across the country who have descended here to help push him over the finish line.

It’s one thing for a tea party candidate to swipe away an individual House seat or dominate a party convention in a small state, but a statewide win in supersize Texas would be a new high-water mark.

“Dewhurst had every advantage you can have. What Cruz has done to this point was once unthinkable and is now remarkable. He will be an overnight star if he wins, which he is favored to do right now,” said Austin-based GOP consultant Matt Mackowiak, a Cruz supporter and former press secretary to retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

The two most recent public polls have shown Cruz ahead. And a Dewhurst ally with knowledge of an internal survey separate from the campaigns told POLITICO his preferred candidate was trailing by high single digits heading into the weekend.

“I think [Dewhurst’s] done,” said the Republican who shared the information in exchange for anonymity. “It’s Nebraska, Indiana. You just smell it. He’s toast.”

***

Mr. Dewhurst is an undistinguished, go-along/get-along creature of the GOP leadership’s seniority-oriented model of politics. He is a student of the school of thought that rallied party operatives behind Indiana’s too-long-lived Richard Lugar when a credible conservative alternative was available in the person of Richard Mourdock. His views — though perhaps not his temperament — would make him an ideal candidate to represent a state such as Maine, where the only other option would be a Democrat to his left. But a strong conservative can win in Texas, and we have one in Ted Cruz…

Mr. Cruz’s personal credentials are sterling: An authentic conservative intellectual, he was a star at Princeton and Harvard law, winning the admiration of thinkers as politically opposed as Robert P. George and Alan Dershowitz. He clerked on the Supreme Court under William Rehnquist and is an unwavering defender of our constitutional order. Having a great deal of experience before the Supreme Court, he would be invaluable when it comes time for the Senate to vet appointments to the highest courts in the land — under both Democratic and Republican presidents. And as the Houston-raised son of a Cuban immigrant, he is proof positive that the American dream is very much alive and well — if in desperate need of defenders within the political system. Mr. Cruz can provide that defense in a way that Mr. Dewhurst simply is not equipped to do.

***

A Cruz win would not only be a major rebuke of the well-known (and VERY well financed) Dewhurst, but it would also arguably be the most significant statewide upset of the 2012 cycle to date. (Yes, we’re talking about the same cycle in which a sitting senator was dislodged in Indiana and a little-known state legislator won the GOP Senate nomination in Nebraska.)…

A Cruz victory would suggest that Republican voters aren’t just rejecting inadequately conservative candidates and longtime incumbents. The sufficiently conservative who are tied the establishment — a word becoming more and more toxic in politics — are also at risk.

A Tuesday win by Cruz would mean just about every candidate left in a GOP primary who is challenging a frontrunner tied in ANY way to the establishment will do everything they can to compare their candidacy to Cruz’s.

***

As Republicans prepare for yet another show vote on abortion Tuesday, Speaker John Boehner and his leadership team are facing a rising tide of from Republican moderates angry over the rightward tack the conference has taken under his leadership…

“I have to say that I’m frustrated by how much we — I mean the Republican Party — are willing to give deferential treatment to our extremes in this moment in history,” [Rep. Richard] Hanna told the Post-Standard.

According to Republicans, moderate members of the House GOP conference feel that Boehner, who has struggled with an often raucous and openly defiant right wing, has forced them to go along with conservative demands but has provided them little in return.

One Republican familiar with the dynamics within the GOP argued part of the difficulty for Boehner has been the fact that conservatives — and not moderates — have been the “squeaky wheel” within the conference, which has forced him to focus on them for much of the 112th Congress.

Sarah Palin is leaping to the assistance of a fellow “mama grizzly” in Missouri.

Sarah Steelman, who has enjoyed the backing of Tea Partiers in Missouri’s three-way Republican Senate primary, received Palin’s endorsement earlier this month. Now, Palin is appearing in a TV ad for Steelman in the race’s closing stretch.

Nice.

I have a doberman-coonhound mix who is 70lbs yet freakishly fast when it comes to getting critters. Rats, squirrels, possums, birds. She is silent too.

I’m not even sure she is a dog. She sees things before they even happen.

Is there a difference?

Wow, that dog must have some fantastic bark / bay! My beagle/coonhound makes the most godawful noise in creation whenever I arrive home. The greyhound was rescued from up north in Michigan. Beagle-coonhound sounds like a true handful.

Nice that you got them from shelters.

My dogs are all from shelters. We have a huge problem with dogs that are abused, dumped, or both around here. I used to have pedigree dogs and cats but after an afternoon in a shelter with the mutts we changed our minds.

Of course property insurance quotes are a bit tricky but…hey.

HA folks – by all means feel free to use the puppy mills but try a shelter first. There are a lot of great animals out there that people just threw out the back of their trucks.

I’ll never use a puppy mill. I always rescue from a shelter, or a last-day rescue where they pick up animals the day before they’re scheduled to meet the grand architect. I do discourage using the stores and mills. If everyone did, they’d eventually stop selling dogs in those places and so many beautiful animals would have a chance at happy lives.

I like Palin, but she’s not God. Too bad that primary selection also includes Kelly Ayotte and McCain.

every crop has a couple bad apples. On the main the Tea party victory of 2010 was very good esp at the state level in place s like WI and NC

Also, you gotta get over your hatred of ROmney. The bottom line is Romney didn’t grow up and associate with Wright, Franklin Marshall Davis, Ayers, and follow Saul ALinsky.

Really? Are you sure about that. Mitt’s father and sual alinky were great friends. Bet you didn’t know that did you. Mitt represents everything wrong with the GOp has it stands today. Mitt is a total 180 degrees opposed to everything Reagan stood for.

I think you ought to listen to Alinsky,” George Romney, a member of the GOP’s liberal wing and an unsuccessful presidential candidate, told his political allies in the wake of 1967’s devastating race riots in Detroit.

So we can put another progressive in his place and live in a world of unicorns and stardust.

As Levin says an Orange juice can is better.

then give me an orange juice can to vote for. Not a progressive.

I haven’t seen Palin endorse Mitt’s nomination yet. Doubt I will esp if Mitt is stupid enough to lock her out of the convention.

Sarah Steelman, who has enjoyed the backing of Tea Partiers in Missouri’s three-way Republican Senate primary, received Palin’s endorsement earlier this month. Now, Palin is appearing in a TV ad for Steelman in the race’s closing stretch.

Sorry Sarah, I’m voting for John Brunner. Never been in politics but did build a company. One of his products is Germ X, the hand sanitizer.

They use his political inexperience as a negative but he says it’s a positive.

Palin knows how to pick em. Plus she get them over the finish line with her endorsements.

SparkPlug on July 31, 2012 at 2:16 AM

Yeap I’m amazed at her record this season. And how once her endrosement has gone out the grassroots have responded and helped them get the wins in their primaries. I really think the Cruz thing and the growing noise from the grassroots demanding Palin speak at the convention rattled the eastablishment’s cage causing them to rush out cheney to attack Palin. the quick response by Liz cheney saying her dad was full of crap shows it backedfired big time. For the life of me I just don’t understand why the GOPe contiue to poke that grizzly. They should either bring her onboard or leave her alone. either would be better then attacking her. It just fires up people and reminds people how crappy their politicans in DC really are.

Obama is a commie who must be defeated.

So we can put another progressive in his place and live in a world of unicorns and stardust.

As Levin says an Orange juice can is better.

then give me an orange juice can to vote for. Not a progressive.

As Palin say “ANYONE But Obama”.

I haven’t seen Palin endorse Mitt’s nomination yet. Doubt I will esp if Mitt is stupid enough to lock her out of the convention.

This is exactly what I mean. Palin decided not to run, we have no other choice.

Obama is the biggest radical we’ve ever had. He truly despises this country and captalism. Romney does NOT — you gonna argue me on that?

Obama hates Israel, Romney does not.

Obama spent $5B in about 3 years. GIve him another 4 years and see what happens. Especially when he’s not afraid to abuse his power and have czars and bureacrats bypass congress. Plus as you pointed out last night, the GOP under Boner is gutless (as I say) or they like Obama as you said.

Romney has campaigned on repealing Obamacare. You want no shot at all at having it repealed and get stuck with it for life? Then sit this one out and pout at home.

Romney has also campaigned on repealing Dodd Frank. DOn’t you see a major policy difference there? So what’s Romney going to do, just go back on all his major promises once in office and committ political suicide?

Did you see the post on Hotair yesterday where Romney aides said he will eliminate wind subsidies? That bodes pretty well for a guy who’ve we had concerns for his waffling on global warming.

Obama makes Romney look like Reagan.

Obama must be defeated, period. NC is a swing state unseen (I’ve seen you say you’re from there before). We need every vote and all the support we can get.

I always rescue from a shelter, or a last-day rescue where they pick up animals the day before they’re scheduled to meet the grand architect.

Not me. I’ll never adopt a dog from the pound again. There’s usually a reason why these dogs have been cast off. And the pound lied to us about a dog — it was deaf, not housebroken and had separation anxiety. After thousands of dollars of damage, we surrendered and gave the dog back, and the people at the pound just giggled because they knew it was a bad dog.

I like Palin, but she’s not God. Too bad that primary selection also includes Kelly Ayotte and McCain.

Senator Kelly Ayotte – New Hampshire
Club for Growth: 2011 score 98% Lifetime score 98%, 8th best in Senate
NRA rating A
American Conservative Union – 2011 95% Lifetime 95%, one of the highest in the Senate

O/T: After yesterday’s announcement, all I can say is, My Daddy’s spinning in his grave so fast, up in Heaven they’re nicknamed him “Pinwheel”. This ain’t you’ folks’ Democratic Party. My take.

kingsjester on July 31, 2012 at 6:33 AM

john heilman believes some “external” event, not an october surprise, but some “flub or gaffe” by romney or some external event that will (impact obama).

well then. the dems are doing a good job with the first part (the entire show was devoted to romneys flubs overseas) its going to be those pessky “external events” they have to worry about.
