New Romney Super PAC ad: “Olympics”

posted at 6:41 pm on July 30, 2012 by Allahpundit

Straightforward but really solid. As Guy Benson says, this one’s hitting on all cylinders: Timely, upbeat, keyed to Mitt’s core strength as a manager, and with a national security subplot to boot. Plus, the Olympics is the one part of his resume that everyone can relate to. He won’t talk much about his term as governor because he doesn’t want any RomneyCare headaches, and he can’t talk much about his time at Bain because (a) many voters don’t understand what private equity does and (b) he’s being demagogued every which way but loose by Team O for it. But everyone gets the storyline here: Shambolic Salt Lake games salvaged by a whiz who knows how to make a fat, creaking bureaucracy shape up. My only real criticism is that there are now less than 100 days to go before polls open and I feel like this is the first time we’re getting an affirmative reason to vote for him. Am I wrong about that? Was there some other effective positive ad by Team Romney or the Super PAC that I’m overlooking? Until now, every spot might as well have ended with, “Four more years? Seriously?” Which, admittedly, would be a pretty solid slogan.

Two ads for you, one the Olympics spot and the other also a very effective ad from Romney’s campaign, albeit with a sharply different tone.

Much better than the Obama ad I saw during Olympics coverage. He was looking into the camera banging on with his usual lies. The new one is a real whopper. 2008 he promised to “cut the deficit in half” but this time around he’s promising to “pay down debt” using a balanced approach – or whatever. “Pay down debt” – I’m not making this up – ha actually said that and paid money to put it on TV. That’s how stupid he thinks we are.

No, NBC has sold the available Olympic political ad time to the Pretendian from Massachussetts pushing the Chinese model. She could quite possibly be 1/32nd Chinese, too. She’s at least 30/32nds Communist.

Professor Warren’s approach is so flawed that it’s amazing that her campaign would spend the money on putting it into a prime-time Olympics commercial that was presumably designed not to alienate people but rather to get them to vote for her. You really have to see it to believe it.

I know a man who began a roofing business twenty-some years ago. When he started out, it was just him and one other guy, literally going door-to-door asking for business and for the opportunity to give people estimates. Their prior experience was working as laborers for another guy who predicted that he’d be buying their equipment from them by the end of the summer. Today he employs over 100 people and they do millions of dollars in business every year. Not only did the government not help him build his business, it hindered him, every step of the way.

I’m a big fan of going negative… hard! But I guess a little bit of positive is alright. I think Romney, in a generic sense, is going to be pretty much ok. Our main concern, and I’m 100% serious, to win we have to get -deep- into the psyche of the independent swing voter that O is absolutely horrible, hateful. Look, their side has no compunction about trying to do that to us.

Get to the issues that really rankle, including gay militancy, O’s verbalized position on the gzero Mosque, Obamacare’s horribleness, spending $ for his campaign contributors (huge huge huge; lather rinse repeat), CIA prosecutions, destroying our space program in the face of China marching forward, spending like there’s no tomorrow, the war on energy, on and on but I’m out of time.

Yes AP, you’re wrong about this.

I’m no ROmney fan and I fought like heck in the primary against him.

However I defended Bain against the smears from Perry and Newt, who were attacking capitalism in those smears.

Romney is self made and Bain actually took over failing companies (many due to bad union contracts) implemented new strategies that ended up saving lots of jobs.

Romney should’ve fought harder to defend his Bain record. It’s a shame that the polling is split as to whether Bain is a plus or negatie for Romeny, it should be an overwhelming positive.

Think about the disgust we feel. Think long and hard, and then think about how to translate that into Independents-Speak. That’s the basis for ads and talking points.
Remember, despite all our emphasis on the economy, according to Gallup, O’s approval rating has gone up three quarters in a row. It seems to be in an inexorable upward drift. We have to do something dramatic to break that trend, or we may very well lose.

Let me make it simple. If you are about to be drowned by some mad man (that would be an analogy to Obama) would it make much difference to you if the person who could save you was named Reagan (not that you necessarily care that much for him) or Romney? Or Clem van Whatsit? Are you going to say, ‘No thanks, I’ll wait and take my chances”?

He won’t talk much about his term as governor because he doesn’t want any RomneyCare headaches, and he can’t talk much about his time at Bain because (a) many voters don’t understand what private equity does and (b) he’s being demagogued every which way but loose by Team O for it.

-wishy-washy, pessimistic HotAir blogger Allahpundit

Allahpundit, sometimes it seems like you don’t get much out much or interact with too many real people outside of political pundit bloggers. Poll after poll has shown that Romney’s business experience is a positive for voters, despite the smear attempts by the Obama campaign. OF COURSE Romney can and will continue to tout his experience at Bain. Same goes for his record as governor and his experience with health care reform, which is turning out to be a plus for him in this campaign (and which he discusses with ease and effectiveness as he explains why Obamacare MUST and will be repealed once he is President) and is hardly the unmentionable topic you seem to think it is. Maybe you should travel around the country a bit more to try to broaden your perspectives. It may improve your blogging. Right now you seem too limited to following the political pundit swarm and rehashing whatever has been said by other pundits, who may not exactly know what they’re talking about.

My only real criticism is that there are now less than 100 days to go before polls open and I feel like this is the first time we’re getting an affirmative reason to vote for him. Am I wrong about that? Was there some other effective positive ad by Team Romney or the Super PAC that I’m overlooking?

-wishy-washy, pessimistic HotAir blogger Allahpundit

Yes, you’re wrong. The Romney campaign had a whole series of positive “Day One” ads for different swing states. Also, the Restore our Future PAC released an ad about Romney’s character and how he helped his colleague in a time of crisis. A simple YouTube search or visit to Romney’s website or SuperPAC site would have turned up these facts, but then that might require doing some independent work, rather than just relying on whatever the political pundit echo chamber is rambling on about in a given week.

LevinFan on July 30, 2012 at 7:27 PM

“Swing state” polling is usually less accurate, so times notoriously so, than national polling as national polling gives a certain “canceling of errors”.

Michelle Kwan is Republican too…

jimver on July 30, 2012 at 7:30 PM

Makes sense. She’s worked hard all her life, and now is working with the handicapped.

Paul-Cincy on July 30, 2012 at 7:32 PM

Yep…tiger mom values vs Julia values :)…I’d take the former every day of the week..

I posted my own similar comment before I even saw this.

haha as long as I can squeeze the trigger to send ‘em downrange, right? haha

Downrange is generally the better option. G’night and stay safe over there!

and he can’t talk much about his time at Bain because (a) many voters don’t understand what private equity does and (b) he’s being demagogued every which way but loose by Team O for it.

Nonsense. He can’t talk about his strength because the public doesn’t understand it and the democrats are demogoging the issue? Those sound to me like reasons why he has to talk about it. Unless he’d prefer to have the Democrats explain private equity to the public instead.

…trolls…but…but a community organizer is so much better qualified and the econony is starting to hum along and the air is cleaner, and he is still popular, and women love him, and the young people adore him still, and his wife, and he has such a beautiful family, and he is more in touch with the every day person, and he saved the automobile companies, but not so much auto dealership employees, and he created 4 million eleven seventy jobs in one month when we were losing a million of them a week, and he’s sensitive to everything and everybodies medical condition, and it’s not going to cost anybody anything, and other countries love us way more all around the world, and he visits everybody in our country, and he want’s to be fair, and he wants to tax rich people because they have more money than they need, and he hates greedy WallStreet and will protect us from them, and from the Republicans who want to make our country fail, and he is sorta taking care of the deficit to make sure we all get money, and he doesn’t wear a suit all the time or put his dog on the roof and he goes on vacations just like us all the time, and he can golf, and eats food like us like burgers and french fries and stuff, and he doesn’t call them american fries to offend anybody, and (ok…*could have gone on all night*)…and he will save us from Mitt Romney!

Am I wrong about that?

Too easy…

cicerone on July 30, 2012 at 7:35 PM

A simple YouTube search or visit to Romney’s website or SuperPAC site would have turned up these facts, but then that might require doing some independent work, rather than just relying on whatever the political pundit echo chamber is rambling on about in a given week.

bluegill on July 30, 2012 at 7:31 PM

Just stop it! OK! Just stop it!

If Mr. Allah Pundit listens to you, he will never get invited to the right parties in Georgetown.

don’t worry. mitt has the mo and gaining fsaster than bo. each have 180 solid electoral votes. these swing states are dying for a leader to help them recover. mitt’s their man and ours, too.

..Scott Rasmussen said on Varney&Co. as much. he also said that Indian is lost for Obama (he’s down 9). Also, the bleeding obvious but what’s becoming more and more evident: if the economy doesn’t improve, the Obama is toast. (Words to that effect.)

Q.E.D., ipso fatso, and all that!

^ THIS

I’m astounded at Allahpundit’s utter lack of intestinal fortitude.

Has Allahpundit always been this wimpy, for lack of a better word? Allahpundit seems a little too willing to throw in the towel, crawl under the bed covers and suck on his thumb.

Toughen up, AP!

Thank you Mister KOOLAID2. Finally another sane person on this blog. All of you should listen to Mister KOOLAID2. Dear Leader’s opponents are just clinging to their old fashion morality and work ethic and outdated independence and outmoded sense of dignity. Don’t worry about that kind of old stuff anymore. Just reelected Dear Leader and you won’t need any of that. Everything will be free! Everything you want, yes everything, Dear Leader will provide it. And remember, I said free, all free! Thank Obama all mighty, everything free at last! But remember you must vote for Barack Obama or the only thing free will be one of those drones flying over your house.

..it’s why they put “FRONT TOWARDS ENEMY” on Claymores, Tex!

The War Planner on July 30, 2012 at 7:45 PM

Am I wrong about that?

No. If Romney wins, it will be because people voted against Obama. Romney is a flip-flopping moderate who is telling conservatives what they want to hear, and you can bet he’ll govern as a moderate.

Most righty bloggers have already gone into Romney cheerleader mode, but thankfully AP tells it like it is.
