Nikki Haley and … nepotism?

posted at 8:01 pm on July 29, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Thank God for our crack press corps. If it weren’t for the Fourth Estate we’d never be able to keep an eye on the nefarious activities of malevolent elected officials and hold them accountable. Another such shining example comes to us from the pages of The State – the largest newspaper in South Carolina – who uncovered a story of nepotism involving their governor, Nikki Haley.

It’s a pretty serious charge and we’ll certainly want all the details immediately. I wonder what it will be? Some of her in-laws getting fat, big dollar positions as lobbyists or appointed executive branch officials? Her own family cashing in on the state’s pension funds? Let’s find out.

Gov. Nikki Haley’s 14-year-old daughter is working in the State House gift shop, raising questions about nepotism that the governor’s office declines to answer.

The shop is run by the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, a state agency whose director, Duane Parrish, is appointed by Haley…

[Haley spokesman Rob] Godfrey told the Charleston paper that Haley’s daughter usually works 20 to 25 hours a week and is paid $8 an hour, the same as all entry-level workers at the gift shop. The hours of other gift shop workers were not cut to accommodate the daughter’s position, he said.

Seriously? A 14 year old girl with an essentially minimum wage job in a gift shop? And now she’s being turned into a political pawn in the media. Nice.

Admittedly, Haley probably should have known better and realized her enemies would come after her brandishing this story. But let’s not turn this into a national incident, shall we? If this was really upsetting to the Democrats they could have simply sent a memo to Haley asking her to have her daughter voluntarily resign from her part time job. They didn’t need to toss it into the maw of the press.

It’s the silly season alright. And I don’t expect it to get much better before November.

Or the Democrats could do the right thing and demand the death penalty for her daughter. What an impudent little b*tch, taking jobs from illegal immigrants! /sarc

Let’s face it, Republicans just don’t think like that. These Liberals, you remember, the tolerant people, they constantly think like that. It’s part of their “you didn’t build that” mentality which should be considered, at best, convoluted reasoning.

Now, if her daughter was making $50 thousand a year, doing the same thing, then they could make the case, but let’s get real here. This is South Carolina, I’m sure there’s a Democrat doing some serious damage to intergrity there somewhere, go get ‘em guys.

After all the Fawn Halls, Donna Rices, Monicka Lewinskys, and Rielle Hunters, et al. who were either officially, or UNOFFICIALLY, on the payroll… I think a 14 year old girl working in a gift shop is pretty small fry.

These mistresses got paid a HUGE amount of tax dollars to perform services that were not, in most instance or parlance, considered GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT.

Haley should have known better…. not because her daughter shouldn’t learn self reliance and develop a good work ethic through just this type of employment… but because the gift shop in question happens to be located in the state house.

However, the Democrats and the press being more than willing to drag a 14 year old kid through the mill to take a shot at her mother is despicable.

That being said, I’m fairly confident that Governor Haley will use the incident to educate her daughter on the nature of the press and the value of being cognizant of appearance when in a position of public trust.

Roxeanne de Luca on July 29, 2012 at 8:58 PM

Fire the kid for the appearance of nepotism and let it set the standard that Democrats will have to abide by. It’s a good tactic to do these things on purpose once in while. I’ve thought of incidents before where I wished a Republican politician would use the tactic. Perfection is a burden, and no one likes you for it anyway.

Cindy Munford on July 29, 2012 at 9:03 PM

Haley should reach out to the nearest Chick-Fil-A franchise to see if they’ll hire her.

Her response: “I want to teach my daughter the value of work. If I can’t employ her in a position where I’m sure I can keep an eye on her, I’m pleased to see her working from a family oriented employer. That way, I’ll be much less likely to read about her giving rimjobs to a Democratic president in the White House.”

You might think newspapers in South Carolina would be somewhat conservative in outlook. You would be wrong, at least as concerns the Columbia and Charleston papers.

Both are part of the cozy establishment that Haley and Sanford threaten – SC Governors have little actual power but if their reform movement ever really caught fire, a lot of the good old boys in both parties would find their taxpayer-funded corruption in jeopardy.

Make no mistake, nearly all of the state legislature is corrupt to the very soul. Even the Republicans who mouth conservative-sounding ideas are just in it to steal for their friends, and if there is an honest Democrat in the state they must keep him tied up in a closet somewhere.

Columbia is where honest people go to train themselves to be career criminals.

What is the evidence of nepotism here?

Mom and daughter work for the same ‘company’?

Is she too young to work there? Do they usually hire people with experience and she had none? Did they not really need her and someone else’s hours got cut?

So far, it doesn’t look like any of that is the case.

This is the equivalent of people being up in arms because the CEO of McDonald’s has a daughter working the register at one of the stores.

Honestly, the real scandal here would be if the governor did employ nepotism and the best she could do for her daughter was an entry level job in a gift shop.

The good news is that this is what the Democrats get when they scrape the bottom of Nikki Haley’s barrel. We don’t have dredges strong enough to get through the muck to the bottom of the progs’ barrells.

The nepotism is worse at my company. The CEO’s son, fresh out of college, works in corporate marketing. Pretty cushy job Dad got him, but he does his work well. Right next to him is the CEO’s former family baby-sitter. She also earns her pay. Can’t say if she got help getting the position, but unless she was a dimwit who constantly failed at assigned tasks, I’m not interested. Who you know is a valuable bit of currency in the business world, avoiding taking advantage of it is like intentionally buying a Smart car just to make sure nobody thinks that you aren’t “green”. Stupid.

There is nothing to this story, and again, that’s the good news, that it’s the best the Left has on Haley.

Freelancer on July 30, 2012 at 11:58 AM

If this was really upsetting to the Democrats they could have simply sent a memo to Haley asking her to have her daughter voluntarily resign from her part time job.

So a hard-working, responsible 14-year-old girl decides to make money the old-fashioned way, by earning it, starting with a low-paying job at the same wage as everyone else, instead of mooching off her mother the Governor, and Democrats are criticizing her?

Kudos to both Governor Haley and her daughter–both shining examples of living the American dream. Governor Haley has taught her daughter well, and her daughter has learned her lesson well.

If Democrats want to talk about nepotism, let’s talk about that $300K job that Michelle Obama got with a Chicago hospital, after which she was never replaced when she quit. That had NOTHING to do with her husband being a Senator, did it? Naaaah, must have been her merits. Or maybe her Cherokee ancestry.

Steve Z on July 30, 2012 at 12:17 PM

Hey, when you’re looking for your first job; you often look at your parent’s places of employment first… and kids of management have a boost. Maybe not nice to admit; but true.

Once of my early jobs was “unskilled labor” on a construction site. My dad was a VP of the company (actually VP and OSHA Coordinator of an affiliated company, but close enough).

The women you see holding the slow/stop signs and carrying the walkie-talkies directing traffic? 50%+ of them are wives and/or daughters of the foreman at that job site from what I’ve seen/heard from construction workers.

Nepotism isn’t a surprise; and it’s sometimes a real benefit to a company at this level… the kids of employees tend to show up, on time, and know if they screw up their parents will hear (and then they’ll hear later at home with increased volume).

I’d have trouble picking a company I’ve worked for where nepotism didn’t happen at all.

If the young lady saves all her pay, opps there are taxes withdrawn, for work done over two months duration, she will be able to buy a jacket like Mrs. Obama wore in London at a social function. The average working person makes about that much (the cost of Michelles’ jacket) in a month — too bad they can only eat cake or was that another royal that said that?

But she is a cruel, heartless Republican and her daughter is undoubtedly taking that job away from some Obama supporter whose unemployment has run out, is an adled crack head that can’t make change and therefor puts in in their pocket rather than ringing the sale up. Someone for whom we should have pity because they use the pittance they earn to buy drugs instead of going to the store for milk and Fruitloops for theit kids. How can the Republicans do this?
