Netanyahu: Obama’s sanctions haven’t hindered Iran by “one iota”

posted at 3:31 pm on July 29, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Yikes — this kind of puts a highly visible dent in Team Obama’s recently assertive arguments that Obama has been a perfect ally to Israel and that his and Mitt Romney’s policies and attitudes toward Israel are all but identical. As Jennifer Rubin writes, the Obama administration has one version of things:

The worst-kept secret in Washington is that the Obama administration never asked for and is indifferent if not hostile to the latest round of Iran sanctions. President Obama has claimed publicly to have put in place the toughest sanctions yet, but he hasn’t publicly or, according to congressional sources, privately tried to turn up the heat since he signed the Defense Authorization Act in December and the E.U. weighed in with its own sanctions. …

State is quite convinced the administration has already done enough. Vasquez asserts: “Together with our international coalition, we have put in place the strongest sanctions that the Iranian government has ever faced. Even the Iranian regime’s leadership has talked of the ‘crippling’ effect sanctions have had on the Iranian economy.” He goes so far as to claim, “These sanctions have slowed Iran’s nuclear efforts, and they are having a significant impact on its currency and economy, which has ground to a halt. We’ve expanded these sanctions to further target Iran’s banking and petroleum sectors, and we will continue to ratchet up this pressure if Iran continues to violate its international obligations.” But the administration isn’t ratcheting up the pressure by insisting that sanctions get to Obama’s desk. Moreover, the evidence is that Iran has accelerated progress on its nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has different ideas about the Obama administraiton’s effectiveness. Speaking alongside Mitt Romney earlier, via BuzzFeed:

“I think it’s important to do everything in our power to prevent the Ayatollahs from possessing that capability,” Netanyahu said. “We have to be honest and say that all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota. And that’s why I believe that we need a strong and credible military threat coupled with the sanctions to have a chance to change that situation.”

Obama has been trying to prove that they can go tit for tat with Romney on Israel, but Netanyahu at least feels a little milquetoast about some of the Obama administration’s policies, it seems. Romney, meanwhile, spoke earlier today in Jerusalem, taking an aggressive stance and confirming that he would fully support Israel’s decision to make a unilateral military strike against Iran in order to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear capabilities:

Romney has said he has a “zero tolerance” policy toward Iran obtaining the capability to build a nuclear weapon. …

Democratic U.S. President Barack Obama has also affirmed the right of Israel to defend itself, but in contrast to Romney, Obama has warned of the consequences of an Israeli strike on Iran. …

“Make no mistake: the ayatollahs in Tehran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object, and who will look the other way,” Romney plans to say later Sunday in a speech in Jerusalem. “My message to the people of Israel and the leaders of Iran is one and the same: I will not look away; and neither will my country.”

The Obama administration hasn’t ruled out the military option, but Obama has so far been relying on economic sanctions and diplomatic negotiations to discourage Iran from building a nuclear bomb.

In his first term as prime minister during 1996-1999, Netanyahu had to deal with Bill Clinton, who pressured him to make more compromises to the Palestinians than he was comfortable with. This tme he’s had the misfortune of Obama, who’s demonstrated open hostility. It would be beneficial if Bibi could actually have a president who is openly supportive of Israel’s right to decide her own future without pressure from outsiders.

THAT is a strong leader. That is what we’ve been waiting to hear. We support our allies.

Obama has granted WAIVERS for those supposedly tough sanctions on Iran… to CHINA, INDIA, RUSSIA, and several other nations. IF you grant waivers to the major players, those who use the MOST Iranian oil, how much bite can those sanctions possibly have even of everyone else chose to abide by them? Many nations have found other means of bypassing those sanctions, too. For instance, using GOLD to trade for the oil, rather than their own currency or our dollars, the worlds reserve currency.

What makes anyone think Obama will side with Israel in a war with Iran? Obama has supported every Islamic uprising and he’s told the Russians he’ll have more flexibility after the election. Obama has advisors who have spoken openly and favorably of the UN taking over Israel. Obama is stalling until after the election, not get another Nobel Peace Prize, but because his support of Iran would be political suicide.

O/T sort of…

AP has a story up wherein Romney was asked about his Olympics statement. He is quoted as replying ” I TEND TO TELL PEOPLE WHAT I ACTUALLY BELIEVE.”

HOW VERY REFRESHING! A man, and politician, who stands by his convictions, who says what he means, and means what he says!

I am delighted to see Romney drawing a defining contrast between himself and THE ONE.

The Unicorn Prince… prince of obfuscation…apologist of great renown….he of the deeply bowed head…narcissist… writer of Executive Orders… ruler by his will alone.. purveyor and champion of obsequiousness.

I note, too, that ROMNEY HASN’T apologized for this nation ONCE… nor has he BOWED to any foreign potentate, prince, or head of state.

In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

Sanctions on any country will only work if every other country in the world decides to comply and is willing to enforce them via military action. That is why the Iraq sanctions were a joke and why the existing or proposed sanctions on Iran are too. And, in the case of Iran, the only thing they understand is the employment of brute force.
To think otherwise is beyond naive.

It goes without saying that the conduct of The Fresh Prince of Bill Ayers in this matter has done nothing but strengthen the Iran regime’s resolve and weaken the West’s hand in dealing with the problem.

Israel cannot wait much longer and everyone knows it, and Obama’s acts and omissions here constitute the aiding and abetting the sworn enemy of our country and that of an ally, Israel. Outright treason is the only describe it and when you couple it with the security leaks not a jury on the planet could find otherwise.

Despicable, yet so predictable with this serial bastard in the WH.

All U.S. presidents have recognized that Jerusalem is de facto the capital of Israel, but they have also taken the position that the final status of Jerusalem is a matter for negotiation between the Israelis, the Palestinians, and the international community, and have therefore refused to move the Embassy there. And now Mitt Romney not only says he intends to move the Embassy, he says he “would only want to do so and to select the timing in accordance with the government of Israel.”

Since when do Presidential candidates stand on foreign soil and pledge to conduct U.S. foreign policy in accordance with the desires of the foreign government on whose soil they are standing? No other candidate has ever done so, and it is an outrage for this empty suit to do it now.

Obozo to CAN comment about National Policy because he is (for now) the President. However he should not be campaigning in foreign countries either.

Tough cookies, Bibi-boy, because we are in NO shape for another occupation. Turning the Iranian fleet into matchsticks and their sailors into shark chow, maybe.

But Iraq 2.0? Forget it. Our national debt is now several times over your postage-stamp country’s net value, social unrest is getting serious, we’re on the verge of surrendering to drug dealers, and don’t even get me STARTED on our political situation.

Obama’s economic policies…

IRAN: weaken currency, destabilize economy, collapse country

USA: weaken currency, destabilize economy, collapse country

He’s done much better implementing his policy towards the US than towards Iran, let’s hope he gets lucky and manages to do just a bit of the same to theirs although I suspect he’s putting all his effort into the plan here at home…

Everybody in the world, except Obama and the UN, knows that sanctions don’t work.

The Obama administration hasn’t ruled out the military option, but Obama has so far been relying on economic sanctions and diplomatic negotiations to discourage Iran from building a nuclear bomb.

SCOAMF is buying time until Iran completes their work and Israel is warmed by the glow of nuclear fire. I fully expect Barry to talk very tough after that.

Netanyahu is right about this. Listen to him.
