A “You didn’t build that” convention?

posted at 6:31 pm on July 29, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Could Democrats really be this tone deaf?  For nearly two weeks, Team Obama has been reeling from his “you didn’t build that” comment — to the extent that Barack Obama himself had to cut a personal response ad to stanch the bleeding, so far to no avail.  And yet, the Charlotte Observer picks up on a Boston Globe report from ten days ago that the “buzz” around the Democratic convention (such as it is) has the author of that argument, Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, under serious consideration to be the keynote speaker at the DNCC:

The crowds at political conventions feast on partisan red meat, and they could end up with a bellyful when the Republicans and Democrats meet back to back beginning late next month.

An Obama campaign official confirmed to the Globe Wednesday that US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is being considered as a possible keynote speaker for the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

It would give the Massachusetts Democrat a national platform for her high-profile race against Senator Scott Brown, the same launch pad that Barack Obama used to vault into the public consciousness when he was an Illinois state Senator and was tapped to be the keynote speaker at the 2004 party meeting in Boston.

The Observer didn’t add much yesterday, but the new spotlight on the July 19th Globe story is certainly increasing the “buzz.”  It’s even more interesting that the Globe cited an official from Team Obama, anonymously, as the source of this information.

However, take into consideration the date that this trial balloon got floated.  The Roanoke speech took place on July 13th, when Obama first adopted Warren’s rhetoric on the beneficence of government accounting for all economic growth.  The blowback didn’t start in earnest until July 17th, when Mitt Romney blasted Obama in a widely-hailed speech that launched an entirely new attack strategy on Obama.  I’d bet that the Warren trial balloon got leaked to the Globe’s Glen Johnson somewhere between the July 13th speech and Romney’s rebuttal, or perhaps as late as the 18th, before it became apparent that Obama had stepped all over his own message by adopting Warren’s rhetoric.

Once again, take a look at this mashup of Obama and Warren delivering essentially the same message — that small business owners only succeed through the contributions of others to infrastructure, which ignores the fact that infrastructure exists in large part because of the wealth created by those who take risks to expand markets and create new ones.  With all of the backpedaling that Team Obama has had to conduct over the last two weeks on this point, do Democrats still want this strident, angry speaker to pontificate further as the keynote speaker at the national convention, explaining to a prime-time audience that small businesses are just barely-tolerated parasites on the body proletariat?

At least Democrats would present their attitudes toward free enterprise honestly if they led off the festivities with this rant.  We’re probably not that lucky.  I suspect that the Warren-as-keynote-speaker trial balloon got popped the moment Obama had to cut that “Romney’s unfair for quoting me accurately” campaign ad.

Does Romney have to declare Democrat stupidity as an in kind donation?

Having Warren speak at the convention would be priceless.

Stephen Macklin on July 29, 2012 at 6:36 PM

Democrats have a hard time learning anything. That’s why no Federal program ever gets dumped when it fails, even after decades of evidence. All the politicians do is tweak the messes and throw more money at them.

The Dem convention is going to be interesting, that’s for sure.

This is more about the Senate being in trouble for the dems, and less about what they think Fauxcahontas will say. Clearly, the dems think that dragging this disgraceful woman by her feathered headdress over the finish line is essential to any hopes they have left of holding the Senate.

My first thought, of course they’re doing this to give her legitimacy and national recognition….screams a bit ‘desperation’ on the Dem part though…now they have no choice but double down on ‘ you didn’t build that’ ….good luck with that resonating with the large public :)

The blowback didn’t start in earnest until July 17th when Mitt Romney blasted Obama in a widely-hailed speech that launched an entirely new attack strategy on Obama.

And Romney was the only reason a blowback began, because the Democrat Media totally censored O’bama’s foolish remarks for all of those 4 days.

I hate the DNC just for getting my hopes up.

A convention that highlights the Democrats disgust with even themselves would not be truly complete without Warren hissing her venom onto the quintessential American value.

And still the polls are neck and neck.

I think it would be a great thing. It will be wall-to-wall coverage by the LSM so everyone in the country can hear it.
Of course, we might need a translator if Elizabeth Warren speaks her Native Tongue, Cherokee. We should insist upon it, yes?

vityas on July 29, 2012 at 6:49 PM

Love it.

Would like to see the argument get turned around. Make the statement that hard working, industrious people identified a need and invested and worked to build businesses to produce goods and services. The people then had to build roads and bridges in order to get to the goods and services the people wanted and that were produced by those businesses who exerted the work and capital to provide those goods and services.

In The Forgotten Man, President Hoover in his earlier years had a mine or some kind of industry over in Russia before the communist revolution. The book mentioned how he was paying fair wages and gave good training to people there who otherwise had no work. The commies began accusing his managers of exploiting the workers and when they took it over.. they killed all the high level workers and gave it to “the people.” No one knew how to operate it and it eventually just collapsed and what was a good source of jobs for that area was completely destroyed. The people went into poverty and starvation.

This is what communists do. They are the ones exploiting as they accuse Americans of doing it. They don’t know how to run a thing but they do know how to exploit, intimidate, take over, accuse, harass and destroy. But as for actually building something or working they don’t have a clue.

Why aren’t they getting the credit they deserve? I mean, HELLO! Ed Morrissey clearly didn’t build this himself!

UnderstandingisPower on July 29, 2012 at 7:15 PM

I suspect that both of the charter members of “you didn’t build that” know that they owe affirmative action for their success and now defensively imply that the success of others must also be also predicated on them getting “help along the way” too.

Obama’s only advantage over Warren is that unlike her he did not have to falsely claim an ethnic identity he clearly doesn’t have in order to benefit.

I think we should pretend to be Democrats and BEG that Warren be the keynote speaker.

WannabeAnglican on July 29, 2012 at 8:29 PM

“Elizabeth Warren Could Deliver Keynote Address at DNC”
…and to support her heritage, every 32nd word of her speech will be in the Cherokee language – if she can find a good English-Cherokee dictionary.

I fantisize about somehow replacing the intro song played as she comes on stage with this one.

I’d gladly give money (or wampum) to the DNC/Obama campaign if they’d do it.

I think the DNC should bring in that wooden cigar store Indian algore froathing at the mouth while giving one of his famous stemwinders. That would juxtapose nicely with Liz’s “you didn’t build that” speech.

pain train on July 29, 2012 at 8:37 PM

Obviously, this glimpse into Dear Leader’s soul is killing them and they want Lizzie to do some “you didn’t build that” apologetics for them.

The base will eat it up and be agog with her warmth and intellectualism. The real world will be re-examining why the apologetics are necessary.

The Dems should go for it.

Proof that Massachusetts is more flaky than even California!

I wanted to do that with John F’n Kerry, and use David Lee Roth’s ‘Just a Gigolo’.
