Video: Jay Carney won’t name the capital of Israel

posted at 4:02 pm on July 27, 2012 by Mary Katharine Ham

The White House press secretary got his shoelaces pretty well tangled when asked to name the capital of Israel yesterday:

It’s a fine diplomatic line for the U.S. government, which has long held the official position that Jerusalem’s disposition will be part of final-status negotiations while politicians and presidents have often given more rhetorical support for Jerusalem as capital than the official line. Israel’s governing body, the Knesset, is in Jerusalem but the U.S. Embassy remains in Tel Aviv despite a 1995 law passed by Congress requiring it to be moved to the holy city by 1999. Clinton, Bush, and Obama alike have failed to act on the law, and the U.S. maintains a Consulate General in Jerusalem.

Carney’s being asked about it because the State Department, in March, was caught by the Free Beacon listing Israel and Jerusalem as different entities entirely. State later scrubbed the impolitic communique, but not before it led to an equally uncomfortable exchange over Israel’s capital with State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland:

Last year, Daniel Halper reported the White House was changing “Jerusalem, Israel” to just “Jerusalem” in its photo captions.

The fight over Jerusalem is nothing new, but this administration’s obvious bumbling on the issue plays into a perception of Obama as unfriendly to Israel, which is one perception George W. Bush didn’t have to worry about.

And, it can’t help with this.

Dunno the actual significance of the bill, but I think this issue is part of why he is trying to make a big show of signing this today:

Surrounded in the Oval Office by representatives of the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC and by US lawmakers, Obama signed a law reinforcing US security and military cooperation with Israel.

Every country has right to choose its capitol city; it’s of their sovereignty as an independent nation. This is recognized diplomacy and practice for centuries.

Why is Israel the only exception in the modern world?

If the US doesn’t recognize Jerusalem, then its ‘embassy’ in Tel Aviv is nothing more than a consulate.

FWIW, the law that required the US embassy to move to Jerusalem had a loophole allowing the president to keep it in Tel Aviv for 6 month extensions…presidents have just kept up the 6 month extensions ever since. So this isn’t pure lawlessness along the lines of ignoring the War Powers Act or unilaterally changing the immigration laws.

The reason for Carney’s failure to name the capital of Israel is that he doesn’t KNOW it.

WHY he doesn’t know it is the more important issue.

He doesn’t know it… because NO ONE WROTE IT DOWN FOR HIM and he wasn’t in a position to be able to just look it up on his iphone.

You see, Carney, is a product of academia, and he, obviously, spent his entire academic life NOT questioning, NOT reading, NOT paying attention. This is how academia works these days, with very few exceptions: A student attends lectures, doesn’t read the text, repeats back to the professor what is said in lecture, then promptly forgets it all when they move on to the next class… and another professor.

Early Zionism was a strongly anti-religious, pro-labor, communist philosophy. To make matters worse, the Haganah militia beat the more right-wing Irgun and Lechi during Israel’s early days, resulting in far-left ideology forming the basis of the new country.

Seriously, MadCon? How many times do we have to go around with this? You may be right about Buchanan – I have no idea about his position – but Ron Paul’s position is that we shouldn’t meddle in Israel’s internal affairs, including pressuring them to give up territory. And I’m pretty sure you know that, too, because we had this very argument about a year ago.

If Israel wants to keep Jerusalem as their capital, the non-interventionist position is to recognize that and move our embassy there. There’s nothing “Israel First” about that.

Congress put the six-month loophole in because they knew the law could be ruled unconstitutional. The Constitution gives the conduct of foreign policy to the President, not Congress.

AngusMc on July 27, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Here’s a thought.

Maybe Carney refused to be nailed down on the issue because by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, he would be legitimizing Israel’s claim of sovereignty, which would likely enrage the Obama administrations’ Palestinian allies, as well as much of the the rest of the Muslim world who refuse to recognize Israel’s right to exist.

So we’re at an impasse, with Israel on the one side and the Palestinians (read Arab World) on the other, and Jerusalem in the middle.

Hence they have to tap dance around the issue like marionettes in order to ensure their own political and economic survival, not committing either way.

However, once the violence reaches a crescendo, the UN peace keepers will likely step in to “ensure the peace”, possibly even declaring Jerusalem to be an “International City”, especially since three world wide religions have a claim there (whether legitimate or otherwise).

So just imagine Jerusalem, the “capitol” of the world hosting the UN, headquarters of a new global government. Gives me chill bumps just thinking about it.

Maybe I should just stop thinking about it!

Very apropos, considering the original meaning of “the pale”:

Catherine the Great created the Pale of Settlement in Russia in 1791. This was the name given to the western border region of the country, in which Jews were allowed to live. The motivation behind this was to restrict trade between Jews and native Russians. Some Jews were allowed to live, as a concession, ‘beyond the pale’.
