Rahm backs down: We never said we’d block Chick-fil-A from Chicago, says spokesman

posted at 4:41 pm on July 27, 2012 by Allahpundit

It grieves me to say it but I think we might owe Mike Bloomberg for this. When even America’s most meddlesome micro-managing mayor endorses the libertarian approach on this subject, the Overton window of acceptable state interference is closed. Best for Rahm to have a spokesman issue a quiet climbdown and then slink away in defeat.

Cutting one’s losses is a “Chicago value” too:

Emanuel press secretary Tarrah Cooper called Friday to clarify the mayor’s stance on whether a Logan Square Chick-fil-A location would be vetoed because of the company’s views on gay marriage.

“He never said he’d block the restaurant from coming,” Cooper said…

To clarify, Cooper said Emanuel still believes “their values are not Chicago values.” But that doesn’t mean he would block them.

“If they meet all the requirements, they’re welcome to open a restaurant here.”

Taken together with yesterday’s retreat by Mumbles, that makes two Chick-fil-A dragonslayers who have thrown in the towel. Are there no hardcore liberal mayors left who are willing to try to quash the company’s First Amendment rights for the glory of The Cause? Actually, maybe:

I hope he’s serious about that; we sure could use another week of easy traffic from halfwit Democrats threatening to illegally banish conservative businesses from their cities. Especially as a contrast to stories like this, of Jeff Bezos dropping a few million bucks on the pro-SSM movement in Washington state. Let me know when red-state mayors start threatening to kick Amazon warehouses out of town.

Exit question: Anyone else dreading the Twitter reaction to this terrible news? I’ve got a hunch there’s a Twitchy post collecting lefty reaction in the works as I write this, and it won’t be pleasant.

Kind of a fun time. Very enjoyable. Nothing like watching a bully realize he’s got a steamroller bearing down on him. Also, if not for this kerfuffle, I would have never gotten to listen to the Boston mayor speak. Say, what does Howie Carr think of him?

What happened is all of sudden Rahm and others realized that the whole gay promotion issue is not going to help for the November election. And I think that we don’t understand what a godsend this issue is for us, and a lot of people are holding back their disgust, and just waiting for us or somebody to take the lead and say “enough is enough.” Take this issue on, it’s to our benefit.

It grieves me to say it but I think we might owe Mike Bloomberg for this.

I almost agree with you, AP. But I see it from a different and somewhat expansive view.

I think that, if the CFA thing didn’t face such daunting opposition, Bloomburg would have come down on the liberal side with his mayoral colleagues.

With Boston playing the game of Backtrack, and Bloomie staying silent, Ernst Rahm…errrr…Rahm Emmanuel, has no choice but to run back to the crossroad and go down the other lane.

These ‘enlightened’ liberals didn’t suddenly learn something new, have an epiphany. They simply hate to lose, to be rejected and put on display for what they are.

Bloomburg did nothing except wait to see which way the wind was blowing. His actions from there are what got other liberals to back down.

That’s not courage. That’s letting others take the heat for what you truly want without saying so, then coming across with a posture so you look like a winner.

The very essence of Chicago/New York liberal politics.

It was bad enough for the Dems to be saddled Barack “out of context” Obama as leader of their party, but to have so many more of the party’s big and small leaders lining up at the mic to be seen as no different is going to leave the party with a very very bad, no good reputation for quite some time.

Interestingly, I think their fanatical desire to internalize Lakoff’s rules on messaging is what is hurting them here.

This is liberalism on full display, the micromanaging nature of the type.

The big fish, head rooster of this entire mindset is none other than Obama himself.

Add in Pelosi, Reid, Frank, and every other liberal you can think of. Including the trolls who come here.

The issue of itself is small potatoes. The overall mindset of these people is what’s at issue.

If you have a problem with this matter being brought to the fore, remember the liberal bigwigs who made it an issue in the first place (hint: it wasn’t Mitt).

If you don’t want Conservatives going down these kinds of roads, how about instead telling liberals to not try cutting the path in the first place.

The thug mayor of a city whose name is synonymous with corruption (The Chicago Way) preaches to a successful business about “Chicago values” while threatening to unlawfully use his authority to prevent them from doing business. Only Chicago Democrats fail to see what is wrong with that picture.

The complete lack of shame and matter of fact resort to corrupt practices being mirrored by some piss-ant alderman threatening to illegally interfere with the permitting and licensing process is just icing on the cake.

This kind of thuggery is who they are and what they do. Even if you do mange to open a business, you can expect regular visits from city inspectors and ward heelers with their hands out.

I have a problem with liberal Democrats trying to make the trivial into major issues. The, their acolytes in the MSM working 24/7 to focus the electorate on those things the Dems try using.

Liberty and American values start at the supper table, as Ronald Reagan said. The macrocosm can be used to deflect from what happens at home. That is where liberty is first lost or kept, in my view: in our own neighborhoods. People vote based more on their own life-affecting situations than on the national stage; the workings of Washington are alien to most people, to the politically unsavvy or unengaged.

The local imposition against liberty in our own hometowns, against our neighbors, is not a small matter to me. Actually, it’s the biggest of all matters of our personal freedom.

Or so I believe.

Unfortunately, there’s only one Chick-fil-A in Omaha, and I haven’t found it yet. (I know it’s in the Mutural of Omaha bank building, but I can’t find any signs.) Otherwise, Himself and I would be dining on Chick-fil-A tonight and tomorrow night. But we are supposed to be getting one in Council Bluffs pretty soon. :)

catsandbooks on July 27, 2012 at 5:28 PM

Besides, if I understand correctly, the owners of Chik-Fil-A aren’t saying the sandwiches can’t have sex with each other, or enter into consentual relationships of various kinds. They are just saying that two sandwiches in the same box aren’t married. – Axe

notice how CFA avoid , though, the fact that huge groups of female chickens tend to live exclusively with each other- with very little or completely devoid of male companionship…

don’t ask, don’t tell or a vast right wing lesbian chicken conspiracy?

That was dancing? I thought it was a mob chasing that black guy.

I think I found your problem.

cozmo on July 27, 2012 at 5:31 PM

With all due respect, it is exactly this type of thinking that has enabled Liberal mayors like Rham and Menino to push their agenda of, “if I don’t agree with your ideology, you don’t do business in my town.”

With all due respect no it isn’t.

People are pissed and they’re not going to just sit down and shut up about one issue simply because there are other “more important issues” to discuss. Many people consider the stifling of a businesses right to support the political groups they choose to a very important issue for discussion.

Flora Duh on July 27, 2012 at 5:23 PM

I didn’t say they should sit down and shut up. I said they should have been standing up and yelling years before this. What has been going on in Chicago goes back decades and Obama made his mark by shaking down local businesses there. There is nothing new about this.

sharrukin on July 27, 2012 at 5:32 PM

I have a problem with an electorate focused on trivia while Obama and his crew have been carving away freedoms for years.

sharrukin on July 27, 2012 at 5:09 PM

It is not trivia when mayors are threatening to use their power to bar businesses because they don’t like the political/social/religious views of the business owners.

None in Lincoln. I suppose it’s because civilization stops at the Missouri river or something.

Rahm backs down: We never said we’d block Chick-fil-A from Chicago, says spokesman

Why is this even being discussed publically? Aren’t there bigger fish chicken to fry on the national agenda than a chicken vendor? The politics of the trivial.

sharrukin on July 27, 2012 at 4:52 PM

As long as you have big-city mayors wanting to simultaneously pander to the radicals and posture as great moral heroes for their “inclusiveness,” this story is not going to go away.

It’s also a useful reminder that some version of “morality” is “baked in” to us. Once you reject traditional Christian morality, you wind up replacing it with inclusiveness or environmentalism or social justice or a peace movement or some other form of political correctness — something that will let you differentiate yourself from the immoral/non-inclusive/exploiters/greedy capitalists/warmongers/icky conservatives.

Whatever it was, the guy tossed it to the chickens who promptly ate it.

Then he thanked Rahm for the chicken feed and went about his business. Its how southerners roll.

The lesbian chickens live with the straight chickens due to Planned Parenthood type reduction of the rooster chick population.

Nope. According to the major publishing houses, civilization stops at the Hudson.

cozmo on July 27, 2012 at 5:31 PM

I don’t think you have. Mutual of Omaha actually has a bank here in Omaha. It’s just across the street from the MoO main building.

That’s actually a very good point. They replace traditional morality with things like anti-smoking fanaticism and diet fetishes. Its also an amorphous morality that can be expanded or contracted to include/exclude whomever they want.

From the “Real Life Tragically Imitates Art” department:

While we’re discussing the Marx Brothers and Duck Soup,
these lines belong wholly and completely to Obama:

The last man nearly ruined this place
He didn’t know what to do with it
If you think this country’s bad off now,
Just wait ’til I get through with it

America just finished looking behind the curtain in the Sandusky trial and didn’t like the evil that was seen!! It destroyed a major university and possibly a state and shocked the nation!! Americans are going to be hard pressed to blindly give up clinging to their religion and guns in the future!! Blind acceptance of the radical’s agenda is a thing of the past!!
