NJ: Team Obama hitting the panic button over shrinking gender gap

posted at 1:21 pm on July 27, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Why, wonders Beth Reinhard of National Journal, is Team Obama airing a new television ad with claims already rated by Politifact as “pants on fire” false?  The ad in question, “Troubled,” claims Romney wants to make all abortions illegal, even in cases of rape an incest:

The ad from the Obama campaign said Romney “backed a bill that outlaws all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest.”

The Obama campaign provides virtually nothing to back that up, however. It has no evidence that Romney explicitly opposed the exception for rape and incest. While he supported the “human life amendment,” there are many versions and the most recent ones allow abortion after rape or incest. And it’s worth noting that in 2011, Romney declared that has said he supports those exceptions.

In its effort to appeal to women, the Obama campaign has twisted Romney’s position to a ridiculous degree. We rate the claim Pants on Fire.

So why run yet another ad with the same ridiculous claims?  Reinhard says the key is in swing-state polling — which shows Barack Obama’s big lead among women shrinking substantially:

A look at the dwindling gender gap in just one of the states where the ad is running gives it away. In Virginia — ground zero for the so-called “war on women” because of anti-abortion initiatives in the state capitol — Obama was running ahead of Romney in Quinnipiac University polls in March and June, largely because of monster leads among women. The gender gap was 13 points in March and 16 points in June.

Then came July’s survey, which found the candidates deadlocked at 44 percent each. The gender gap had shrunk to only 5 points.

In the latest week-long survey results (July 16-22) from Rasmussen’s daily presidential tracking poll, which sampled 3500 likely voters, the gender gap has fallen to five points (48/43) — but it’s only down to two points in today’s three-day rolling average (46/44).  Meanwhile, Romney has a 13-point lead among men, 54/41, in today’s result, and a nine-point edge from the previous weeklong results, 50/41.  When leaners are included in the three-day rolling average, Romney has a twelve-point lead among men, 55/43 — and a tie among women with Obama at 47/47.  Among those women “certain” of their vote, Obama only has a one-point edge, 38/37.  Among men certain of their vote, Romney leads by 14, 47/33.

Romney also leads the tracking poll overall by five points, 49/44 — and that was before today’s GDP report.

It seems that Team Obama has good reason to hit the panic button, and not just in Virginia.  They need to scare women back onto the Democratic reservation, and setting their own pants on fire looks like their only option, now that “Julia” has been banished to the Island of Misfit Political Mascots.

even in cases of rape and incest

True, candidates are going to be hobbled if they take that position. This unarguably extreme stance shocks many independent voters that struggle to find a middle ground on abortion. Romney, unlike Perry and Santorum, wisely wouldn’t go there. O is 100% full of it.

They did the same thing to Bush in spite of the fact he clearly said on national TV that abortions are an appropriate choice in the event of rape, forcible or otherwise, the physical health of the mother, and catastrophic medical difficulties with the fetus.

Good luck with that. My generation (25-30) is becoming more and more pro-life. Almost all of my Facebook friends have babies now even if they aren’t married. We aren’t in the 60s and 70s anymore.

Syria would be a better choice, if Assad ‘provokes’ American action. That might get Iran involved, so O will have to ‘expand operations’. Since I doubt O will have the clout to stay Israel’s hand if Israel is hit hard, there could be a major regional war there in two weeks or less.

Yeah. This is the demographic I’ve bee thinking about.

While I have never been the biggest Mitt fan, there’s no doubt that he should appeal to women. What’s not to like if you’re not a hardcore feminist whose vote will never waiver from the Dem ticket?

He’s stable, responsible, devoted to his wife (Check out the way he looks at her! It’s like Nancy and Ron all over again.) He’s crazy about his family, a good provider – an understatement – and he seems to quietly get things done.

I think this demographic is going to flip big-time.

That parody-quote (meaning, it’s not an actual quote but a parody of something Obama has “said” by a combination of his views and policies on record) is actually something I can imagine Axelrod, Rahm, Dunn, certainly Obama and Napolitano if not also Sebelius, Holder, etc. would likely express or can be said to actually be expressing based upon the culmination of their views.

Its gratifying to know that many women are smart enough to see through Obama’s obvious scare mongering, and insulted that he believes women are only interested in reproductive issues and marrying the federal government so that they can be dependent on it for their entire lives, as depicted in that insipid “Julia” ad Obama put out.

Add ‘Julia’ into the “You didn’t build that” statement which also ridiculed people for being smart and working hard, belittling the essence of the American dream and the American success story, as we get a pretty clear picture of how Obama views all Americans, not just women.

I agree with Schadenfreude there…though I was disgusted with McCain as the GOP nominee, the idea of voting for Obama was something similar to wanting-malaria: the sane and healthy would/will/did go far and wide to avoid the contagion as strongly as possible.

I can understand NOT voting for McCain, as in, not voting at all for anyone or even writing in the name if he/she who was hoped for as President, BUT I can’t understand ANYone voting for Obama under those circumstances or even others later revealed.

The decision process there (that went, ‘I can’t stand McCain because I’m a Republican, so I’ll vote for Obama’) is irrational, illogical and not at all a bright one. It’s the illogic of one who intentionally infects onesself and others just because you don’t like the idea of being sick.

OK, so Obama lied – big shock. The next question is: What is Romney and/or his PACs going to do about it?

well, i have no defense for Noonan. I can forgive Ann, but not Peggy. Peggy has become something of a squish…and this after writing some great speeches for Reagan…that’s too much of a dis-connect for me to forgive…esp. given her perch in the media

But on a drearier note, Buchanan has a column out here

http://townhall.com/columnists/patbuchanan/2012/07/27/in_the_long_run_is_the_gop_dead

Rush read it today on air…but i wasn’t able to follow him to the end. I don’t know if Rush was able to argue against it or not

Pat pretty much nails it (imho)…and mentions what i think was a notorious by product of the Bust tax cuts…that the removed a sizeable number of people from the tax roles.

when the top half supports the bottom half we have an unsustainable country

and barry, very very artfully, reduced the payroll taxes.

Free Lunch anyone?

It s/b known that I don’t give a damn about being liked, not, agreed with or not.

I’d be very happy to be wrond, if it’s good for the land and liberty.

It was like shooting oneself in the head.

If the pro-choice argument works so well for the Democrats, the pro-life movement’s claim that it is winning the war seems more than a little ridiculous.

You sent me there last night, but the new pics are a ‘great’ addition. Morons need to be starved, real and in the abstract.

“WAA didn’t disclose their sample for that “poll”. All we know is that it was an “automated” poll, which means far less questions asked so far less reliable results.”

You mean automated like Rasmussen uses?
