Mike Kelly: “Take the heavy boot off the throat of American job creators!”

posted at 3:21 pm on July 27, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Three reasons: 1) It’s Friday; 2) This makes me happy; 3) Who doesn’t love an epic red-meat rant reminding us of exactly what it is we need to focus on amid all of the day-to-day he-said-she-said politics?

While we often talk about over-regulation and its many unintended consequences in terms of vague generalities, here’s Rep. Mike Kelly, Republican from Pennsylvania, on the House floor with some great specifics and a Huzzah!-worthy rallying cry, to boot.

And with that little mind-bomb of truth, the assembled Congresspeople all cheer — and it feels so good. Who says Congressional proceedings are always boring?

I especially liked his line about how Americans want to “thrive, not just survive” (potentially awesome Romney campaign slogan? Anyone?). Americans already have all the know-how, ingenuity, willpower it takes to create robust prosperity, and they have it in spades. The only thing holding us back is our own stupid, self-imposed, overbearing government-tax-regulatory structures. Honestly, now — 1.5% economic growth? What are we doing?

hell, you can get more growth out of a savings account sitting in the local yokel credit union.

Well, for starters, “we” are lying about the economic growth rate.

It has been NEGATIVE every quarter for the past year and a half.

logis on July 27, 2012 at 3:30 PM

We don’t need a new direction. Obama’s plan worked.

Cicero43 on July 27, 2012 at 3:31 PM

hell, you can get more growth out of a savings account sitting in the local yokel credit union.

Which is saying a lot because interest rates are so low that a whole class of retirees can no longer support themselves on their interest income. Our central bank is engineering the largest transfer of wealth from savers to debtors in history.

But let’s tax the rich or something. That’ll work for some reason.

Yep, Erika – this. I wish I could have seen more dems in the video, as they could only slump into their seats, facepalm, roll their eyes and gasp as Rep Kelly callously runs over their beloved family dogma, and then gleefully barbecues it up for a feast.

Being in manufacturing for decades, I literally have dozens, maybe hundreds of stories like the 1/4″ mirror farce.

How about someone spilling 18 oz of peanut oil, and having the hazmat team come out and clean it up….$15,000 worth of fines, plus disposal of a “hazardous” product (once it touches the ground, it’s hazardous)…oh yeah, how about the wrong certificate hung in two paint stalls, after cleaning the filters, where one was hung in the other…$45,000 and front page of the LAT for “XXXX found in EPA violation”…I have so many more.

Washington, regulation run amok…and nobody knows what they are.

right2bright on July 27, 2012 at 3:35 PM

OhEssYouCowboys on July 27, 2012 at 3:25 PM

Nonsense. They’re jumping up and down screaming in rage over this injustice.

ONLY eleven hundred pages to define a “qualified” loan applicant? That can’t even BEGIN to encompass all of the sociological and racial components necessary to ensure the kind of government-enforced economic fairness that will make all the right individuals lose opportunities, so that the right groups can finally win the battle for class warfare in America!

Wherever there is a jackboot stomping on a human face, there will be a well-heeled, Western liberal to explain that the face does, after all, enjoy free health care and 100 percent literacy.

Akzed on July 27, 2012 at 3:42 PM

True story from the Peoples Democratic Republic of Kalifornia. Our state parks are screaming they have no money (despite increasing the fees 500% in three years) yet go around building $1,500,000.00 four toilet bathrooms. Well one of these $1,500,000.00 four toilet bathrooms had just been built but had jack hammers and a team (8) of hard working union guys tearing it apart. I was pissed and went over to ask why they were tearing down a BRAND NEW $1,500,000.00 four toilet bathroom?

ANSWER:

The HANDICAPPED SIGN was put on the wrong bathroom. Because the HANDICAPPED SIGN was put on the wrong bathroom the state inspector demanded that bathroom be converted into a handicapped bathroom. Mind you there was a handicapped bathroom, with the wrong sign, within three feet. So rather than exchange the signs and meet the original plans, the kommisar of the Peoples Democratic Republic of Kalifornia came up with the idea to make the bathroom match the sign. Even the union guys could not believe it.

Sh1t like that is why we are dead in kalifornia. Stick a fork in us. You cannot have the mentally challenged govern or become ruling bureaucrats.

Here’s another good one:

Banks all over America are being sued because their ATM machines don’t have a litle placard on them required by law saying “you may be charged a fee for using this ATM.” Guess what? Lawyers are hiring people to STEAL THE PLACARDS and then take pictures of the offending ATMs so they can sue the bank.

Don’t all ATM’s have security cameras??? The placard needs to be stamped in the metal
and then embossed so it cannot be torn off….

How do you “improperly” store lightbulbs???

That’s nuthin’ when it comes to CA State Parks.

California State Parks Director Ruth Coleman resigned last Friday, and her second in command has been fired after officials discovered the department has been sitting on nearly $54 million in surplus money for up to 12 years.

This is both shocking and infuriating. In May, 2011, Coleman announced the closure of 70 of California’s 279 parks due to budget cuts.

No reason to lie but maybe the union guys redoing the cement ramp would. Two ramps and I saw the regular bathroom sign on the one with a ramp. The guy said that he figured inspectors needed work too. Also see latest James O’Keefe’s sting on public union featherbedding.

This is the same department that hid $54 million dollars to increase fees and close parks.

I’ve been trying to tell the dumb as a box of rocks “FairTaxers” this for a few years now. Regs are the hidden cost far and above the taxation structure that exists today.

But NOOOO, most of them have never owned a business.

Look, taxes need to be reformed but it is the regs which are the boot on productivity and prosperity.

One thing I’d really like to see is automatic “sunsets” on all regulations and agencies — they automatically expire in 5 or 10 years, and have to be affirmatively re-voted upon and re-passed or they’re gone. We do this in Texas, and every government agency has to justify their existence every 10 years.

toby11 on July 27, 2012 at 9:58 PM

hell, you can get more growth out of a savings account sitting in the local yokel credit union.

ted c on July 27, 2012 at 3:24 PM

Have you checked your interest rate lately? Ours are sitting at 0.5%, yeah, less than 1% APR.

That was a great speech. This guy has his finger on the exact problem.
We need an amendment to the Constitution that requires Congress to repeal one law for every law they pass. When first implemented, for the first 5 years, it needs to be two laws repealed for every law enacted. … and this must apply to agency regulations as well.

AZfederalist on July 27, 2012 at 11:52 PM

Gotta love reading about all of these gosh-darn jobs we’ll have once we just get arid of some of these pesky regulations. No one seems to have any idea what those regulations are but they’re bad and once they’re gone we’ll all go back to 5% unemployment and there will be singing in the streets. Obama just doesn’t understand!

Get a grip people. We had 3.2% GDP growth in 2010 and it only plummeted into oblivion once the Republicans took the House and started pushing for austerity and deregulation. Can someone explain to me why things got so much worse?

Typhonsentra on July 28, 2012 at 5:36 PM

Rep. Kelly after slapping down the stack of ‘viable loan requirements’ he should have brought back the “Scotty, beam me up!” phrase. The 1/4″ mirror height reminds me of my own house plans and getting them thru the local house plan inspection/approval cycle. I got a notification them rejecting a situation of window heights in a certain ‘room’ of the proposed house. I took off work to go downtown to meet with the drawing inspector for a few hours. Meeting the young fellow and hearing his issue with the ‘bottom of the window was too high above the floor’ I paused for a few seconds to ask ‘What specification was he taking issue with?’ His answer was accurate except for one critical point. The issue of window height above the floor applies for OCCUPIED ROOMS. I brought to his attention that the windows he was having heartburn over and delaying my construction (for over 2 weeks at this juncture) were located in THE GARAGE. Clearly labled in the drawing package for the floor layout; plumbing details; wiring details; etc. Oh, and this was over 30 years ago. It has gotten worse people, believe me.
