Maybe racism is why people are irritated at Obama’s “you didn’t build that” line

posted at 8:01 pm on July 27, 2012 by Allahpundit

I’m tempted to agree, only because I desperately want white Democratic incumbents also telling business owners “you didn’t build that” while on the stump this fall. No worries, Jon Tester and Claire McCaskill. Free pass for whitey from swing voters on this one.

From Jon Chait’s first post this afternoon:

Mitt Romney’s plan of blatantly lying about President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” speech is clearly drawing blood. But what makes the attack work so well is not so much the lie itself but the broader subtext of it. Watch Obama’s delivery in the snippet put together by this Republican ad…

The key thing is that Obama is angry, and he’s talking not in his normal voice but in a “black dialect.” This strikes at the core of Obama’s entire political identity: a soft-spoken, reasonable African-American with a Kansas accent. From the moment he stepped onto the national stage, Obama’s deepest political fear was being seen as a “traditional” black politician, one who was demanding redistribution from white America on behalf of his fellow African-Americans.

When conservatives pushed back, he clarified that he’s not saying anyone is racist (including Romney) so much as that everyone is:

Foster writes, “ I don’t even have an argument here — which I suppose is fine since Chait doesn’t either.” He does not take the step of considering the obvious conclusion, which is that I don’t have an argument that Romney’s ad is racist because I don’t argue that Romney is racist.

I certainly do think that race is deeply embedded in American politics in ways conservatives don’t like to acknowledge. As I argued, the collapse of liberalism in the mid-sixties occurred because large numbers of whites came to see the Democratic Party as taking resources from them and giving them to lazy or otherwise undeserving black people. Obama’s election crucially depended on his image as a different kind of black politician, not one who was chastising white America or demanding concessions on behalf of other African-Americans…

Are the ads distorting Obama’s “you didn’t build that” line racist? Of course not. They do activate a set of emotions that are closely linked to racial feelings, but so does almost any debate surrounding Obama. (Read Sasha Issenberg’s pithy explanation.) The inextricable link between race and, well, just about everything accounts for the pathological character of the way we discuss race.

The problem with challenging arguments like this, of course, is that they’re nonfalsifiable. (By design.) The idea that race is inextricably linked to “just about everything” is almost prosaic in light of American history and culture, but once you concede it, there’s no limiting principle on using it to justify accusations of racism except the good will of the accuser. E.g., conservatives were plenty irritated when Elizabeth Warren made the same “you didn’t build that” argument last year, which might be a clue that this is less about the race of the speaker than what’s being spoken. But Chait’s telling you flat out in the excerpt why that counter won’t work. Because race is “deeply embedded” and O is, after all, the first black president, “almost any debate” about him must involve some racial element. The racism’s there, always, even if it’s subconscious, even if it’s grafted on to a more legit race-neutral ideological complaint; how hard you need to squint to see it depends on how badly you need to delegitimize your opponent’s argument. In this case, with Team O panicked about the fallout from “you didn’t build that,” squint hard.

Dave Weigel, who’s no rock-ribbed conservative, says it’s preposterous to think that Obama was talking in a “black dialect” during his “you didn’t build that” comments. Is he right? (Yeah, as you’ll see below.) Or is he simply in denial about the “deeply embedded” racial assumptions that he uses to judge Obama? The answer turns, presumably, on whether Dave thinks the “you didn’t build that” line is a big deal. If he does, then he needs to be delegitimized; if he doesn’t — and it turns out he doesn’t — then his racial bona fides can be assumed. That’s how political opportunism as psychology works. The only difference between Chait and garden-variety “you’re racist!” liberals is that he’s smarter and more ambitious in what he’s doing with this than they are. It’s easy to dismiss someone who screeches that Romney’s a willful racist; it’s harder to argue with the idea that we’re all conscious of race to some degree, even if only subconsciously, purely by dint of having grown up in America. That’s a much bigger net to cast. And if you’re fishing, a big net is what you want.

Oh yes, for sure, for sure. Anyone who would dare criticize the brilliance of your no-talent, never-held-a-real-job, affirmative action President, MUST be a racist.

I mean, it’s the only logical explanation, right? /s

Romney supporters sign the front of checks. Obama supporters the back of them. Those Virginians able to take time off on a work day to listen to Obama’s “you didn’t build it” speech have never produced anything in their lives. They are living the life of Julia where they rely on government for every aspect of their lives. They were hollering and cheering because to them Obama’s message was one of stealing from the productive to give them even more.

And for those of you that are unfamiliar with Roanoke, it is a large population center but also a former industrial area filled with a willing audience for Obama’s social welfare message since to find work, the populace would probably have to move.

Happy Nomad on July 27, 2012 at 8:15 PM

People really don’t know what racism is these days. It’s a shame really. Somehow the term “racism” has morphed into some weird meaning of not agreeing or offending a person of another race. Their must be hundreds of southern blacks spinning in their graves.

The Notorious G.O.P on July 27, 2012 at 8:16 PM

Chaits conclusion that Obama wasn’t referring to business when using the word ‘that’ presumes the audience does not know what ‘that’ means. Actually that is a marker word for a nine month or so old baby. The pronoun refers to the nominative IMMEDIATELY referenced before ‘that’ is used. It is a marker for a child moving from simple nouns to abstract thinking. Either Obama was referring to ‘business’ or he does not have the speaking ability of a nine month old child.

pat on July 27, 2012 at 8:16 PM

Yeah…racism…

From what I have encountered, a lot of blacks really hate being portrayed as a bunch of whiners who always have their hands out, when they work for a living and take care of their families like every other decent American does.

The race card, in my experience living among real people, is that the term no longer bears any weight with whites. But among blacks, it’s bordering on insult to them.

Liam on July 27, 2012 at 8:17 PM

Thought they might at least save the Race Card until the fall. But they appear to be blowing everything early, including all their campaign cash, out of sheer desperation, because nothing is working for them. This won’t, either.

As AP points out, the “racism!” charge is non-falsifiable, which is the source of whatever power it still holds. Denying the charge proves you’re a racist (either an unconscious one or else you’re a liar and your denial is an admission). If you agree with the charge… well, heads they win, tails you lose.

Most effective counter to the racism charge I’ve seen is the Breitbartian “…and so?”

You don’t answer the charge one way or the other, but you up the ante: “You’ve made the charge, friend, now what do you intend to do about it?” “And so?” Sputter time.

Flora Duh on July 27, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Allah, not impressed with your analysis on this one. Here is what is going on:

Most liberals are racists. Some of them might be well-intentioned racists, but they generally believe that blacks are inferior and must be parented and protected by a benevolent state, conveniently run by liberal white guys. That makes them racists. Then they get Barack Obama elected, and while they’re thrilled with what they’ve done, they’re also terrified. Why? Because they believe blacks are inferior, and they believe it is their job to make sure no one else notices that, and they are afraid that barack could, at any moment, reveal his inferiority (which they know exists), so they must be prepared to defend him. So when he screws up, they say to themselves, “Damn! Now people are going to find out he’s inferior,” so they throw the race card down, hoping it’ll be a diversion from the inferiority which they are certain exists.

Meanwhile, the rest of us, who are not saddled with this twisted racism, who believe a man rises and falls by his own merit, stand around saying “WTF is this guy talking about?” because we cannot believe these people are so freaking racist that they cannot hold a black president to any standard at all because they believe with every ounce of their racist little hearts that the president is inferior and must be protected.

Oooo, when they have to resort to “subtext” that means they got nothing else to go on.

And the progressives had us believe that once Obama got elected the race card would be put away forever…

Still playing that race card.

Losers.

We are irritated because those of us out here in real America all are people or directly know people, relatives, friends, who started a business on their own, in the kitchen or garage, borrowed when they had to from friends, relatives, and yes, banks, to build that business, hire others, pay them decent wages, offer benefits…all in the face of government trying to take every penny they earned and then some because they could not afford to hire a major accounting firm to take care of their books….or government thought there was a level when people just earn too much money.

Thanks to Obama, a couple less car dealerships are around here…because government took them away as part of the Ponzi scheme to “save” General Motors. And, because of the tanking Obama economy folks who once worked as skilled mechanics are no longer employed, sales people are lining up still to find work at Rallies or Burger King.

If one simply reads the transcript of Obama’s “you didn’t build that” and never listened to the actual speech or watched the entire video will not understand the snark of the president, and his utter contempt for those of us who did not need a government hand-out or bail-out to start or keep a business.

It’s almost like Obama ran the Opening Ceremony. It has fail written all over it.

faraway on July 27, 2012 at 8:40 PM

OT: The London games opening ceremony is celebrating their National Health Service..?

d1carter on July 27, 2012 at 8:36 PM

I am told by friends in UK that NHS is an endurance sport.

If you live long enough, wait in line for weeks, months, years, they may finally call your number to receive an outdated medical procedure.

coldwarrior on July 27, 2012 at 8:41 PM

Maybe next time they can celebrate dentistry.

But I wouldn’t count on it.

tetriskid on July 27, 2012 at 8:40 PM

LOL

d1carter on July 27, 2012 at 8:42 PM

If yes, then isn’t 0 the racist?

Bmore on July 27, 2012 at 8:42 PM

There really are no limits or ends to which the leftisproglibturds will go to cry raaaaacccccist in Obama’s post-racial America, eh?

stukinIL4now on July 27, 2012 at 8:42 PM

Maybe racism is why people are irritated at Obama’s “you didn’t build that” line.

Because he was talking about cotton plantations, or something like that?

farsighted on July 27, 2012 at 8:42 PM

==================================================

the only thing that irritates me is the racism by that racist Obama and his followers

The guy cannot see a human being for anything other than the color of their skin. The guy is obsessed with it and is a racist in the most evil way imaginable. Actually, it not only irritate me. I hate racists, people who judge you by the amount of pigment and consequently I hate Obama for his racist actions

huntingmoose on July 27, 2012 at 8:42 PM

so far this is the most hideous spectacle that i have ever witnessed, much less being the worst Olympic opening ceremony ever. It can only get better, but I am not holding out hope.

Lol.

Maybe next time they can celebrate dentistry.

But I wouldn’t count on it.

tetriskid on July 27, 2012 at 8:40 PM

Please pass the windex and paper towels please, you made me make a mess on my monitor LOL

JPeterman on July 27, 2012 at 8:43 PM

I may have to switch over to the Rachel Maddow Show to find something more exciting

faraway on July 27, 2012 at 8:43 PM

The key thing is that Obama is angry, and he’s talking not in his normal voice but in a “black dialect.”

Remember what Harry Reid said about the boy king’s dialect?

I tried to post here but it didn’t make it past HA’s filter.

I heard the North Korean athletes loudly said “We’d rather be in P’yongyang. Might be oppressive, but they can sure put on a stadium extravaganza.”

coldwarrior on July 27, 2012 at 8:45 PM

Racism is always the default claim failing anything better. I hope they keep trying to play the dumb race card because it no longer trumps like it use to and everyone is getting sick of it. When Whites get completely over their stupid White guilt (as many already have and Asians & Hispanics never had anything like it) it will mean a better future for this country, including for blacks too many of whom think they need it.

Chessplayer on July 27, 2012 at 8:45 PM

It’s all racist, man. All of it. The earth. The trees. The birds. The clouds in the air. Even the moon and the stars. If only we had known. But now we do.
