Change: Obama going positive with ad to air during Olympics

posted at 12:41 pm on July 27, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

If anyone had any doubt left, it became readily apparent that Team Obama knew the president really messed up with his “you didn’t build that” remarks when they sat the president down to make a personal appeal from inside the White House about how his words were being taken “out of context” (…or something). The president’s words struck a chord with the American people, and not in a good way — and it doesn’t look like the damage control is getting them anywhere. So, they’re changing tack, with a new ad to be seen by the many Americans who will no doubt be watching the Olympic opening ceremonies.

It seems to me that the “I believe” tone, the focus on hard-working rural and suburban Americans, and the always-a-favorite “America is the greatest nation on earth” is pretty much meant to directly counter the distinctly un-American feel of his unpopular comments with some patriotic red meat, no? Heavy on the feel-good Americana, upbeat, light on specifics, and zero mention of Mitt Romney — definitely a noticeable change from their usual approach, and I’d guess that they’re hoping it’ll reach a large audience and help wash away the bitter “you didn’t build that” taste in their mouths. (His middle-class-outward, no-more-top-down economic rhetoric still has me plenty confused, but I suppose, if you don’t think too hard, it sounds kind of pretty, right?)

Ads are important during the Olympics because many potential voters who are not paying attention to politics tune in.

Many of the Romney ads I’ve come across were on FoxNews or conservative talk shows. Are those the venues where the ads need to be directed?

bayview on July 27, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Nothing will change because, with or without prompter, ‘positive’ ads or not, this was not a gaffe, nor was it “out of context”, nor was it misinterpreted by anyone.

This is Obama’s philosophy.

The land heard it from his mouth – he hates small businesses, he hates the middle class, he hates individualims, hard work and smarts.

Why? Because he envies all those people. It must be a pathetic existence to have attained the highest level in the best land on Earth, based solely on the latte-hued skin on your azz, and that alone. He is really a pathetic figure, on not matched in history.

He s/b thrown out, mocked out of town, so as to never repeat such charlatanry. In the proces, medis spontaneously combust, for eating his sh*t, while mistaking it for Beluga caviar.

Going positive?

That’s like a wife-beater “going positive”. BO has abused the citizenry in ways that verge on being immoral. No. His lack of concern for what we have endured is immoral.

He’s functioning under a great misapprehension, however.

Unlike battered spouses we can make the break by getting to the polls and voting his sorry a$$ out of office. We don’t have to leave home and fear that he’ll come looking or that we can’t survive financially – we’re somehow managing to do that already.

Lies, lies, lies….. Lie to me once. Shame on Obama. Lie to us endlessly? Shame on this country.

Schadenfreude on July 27, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Do you “believe” in amazing coincidences?:

He blasted big business, Wall Street, big oil, General Motors, “excess profits,” “millionaires” and the “wealthy.”

He called out the “corporation executive” for not paying his “fair” share.

He attacked “GOP” tax cuts that “spare the rich” and “benefit millionaires.”

He advocated wealth redistribution from greedy “corporations” to “health insurance” and “public works projects.”

He described himself as “progressive,” while his detractors accused him of being a communist.

He adopted slogans like “Forward” and “Change.” He wanted to transform America through “fundamental change.”

He was skeptical of preachers and their effect on God-and-gun clinging Americans, and saw the Catholic Church as an obstacle to his vision for the state. He argued that Christians should support his ideas and enthusiastically sought the support of the “social justice” Religious Left. Moreover, many people were unclear about his personal religious beliefs, including whether he was a Christian.

Frank Marshall Davis

Who is this man?

If you answered “Barack Obama,” you’re only half right. The answer is Frank Marshall Davis, Hawaii mentor to a young Barack Obama, and Communist Party member 47544.

Flora Duh on July 27, 2012 at 1:23 PM

“You didn’t build that” has already become part of the fabric of this election and beyond. Its become a go to joke. When a gaffe or a statement by a politician goes viral like that, to the point of being woven into the national lexicon, there is no way to mitigate it or to shake it.

The fact is, I believe that ‘You didn’t build that” is going to be associated with Obama, historically speaking, every bit as much as “Hope and Change” and “Yes We Can”.

This is a president for whom the jingle and slogan was hallmark. Now he has a new one to add to his collection.

Another key element of “You didn’t build that” is the fact that Obama made the statement when he had just GONE OFF THE TELEPROMPTER for the campaign…almost exactly 2 months, 60 days, before the 3 debates he’s obliged to have with Romney. This is a statement that came FROM HIM. It wasn’t perceived as something he could blame on a speech writer. This was HIS core take on what it is to be an American and the national identity as a whole.

One positive toned speech, full of the general statements professing love of this nation and its exceptionalism, isn’t going to serve to obliterate the fact that he believes the American people didn’t build this nation.

Clown Nose On/ Clown Nose Off

petefrt on July 27, 2012 at 1:28 PM

Of course, we are all to believe the sincerity of this latest hard pivot from Obama?

Why should anyone believe Obama now? or ever?

After all the times he has switched positions or had to make covering statements as in this latest “you didn’t do that” garbage?

After all the times he has seeded his audience with questioners “randomly” chosen to either ask softball questions or simply fawn over Obama?

Par exemplar:

One of the latest…3 military veterans just happened to walk in to a diner where Obama happened to be?

And locally, from one who has direct access to the information:

A few weeks ago, after Obama started his bus tour in Maumee, Ohio…where the “crowd” (about 300) was in lock-down in the blazing sun…once inside the wire nobody could leave…and temps at the 100 degree point….Obama heads down the highway and just happens to stop at Cozy Corner diner in Oak Harbor, Ohio. At Cozy Corner diner, more than an hour before Obama was scheduled to show up, the Secret Service locked the place down…everybody inside stayed inside. No body outside was permitted to enter. Secret service and state police for several blocks around, diverting traffic on a main road, all cellphones and other devices were turned off, no phone calls were to be made by anyone to anywhere…total lock-down. Obama arrived, late, as usual…some local residents and business owners who normally stop in at Cozy Corner for breakfast didn’t get out until lunch time…so…these veterans (in Oregon) did not just happen to stop in at the diner…they were proven to be plants.

Once again…Obama is playing the public.

Millions spent trying to refute his own words….

Now millions spent trying to re-shape his image.

Problem with Obama trying to get his story out is that his story changes…constantly.

The only economy with which Obama is familiar is economy with the truth.

Oh my, oh my, “you’re all racists”, heh, heh, heh

The key thing is that Obama is angry, and he’s talking not in his normal voice but in a “black dialect.” This strikes at the core of Obama’s entire political identity: a soft-spoken, reasonable African-American with a Kansas accent. From the moment he stepped onto the national stage, Obama’s deepest political fear was being seen as a “traditional” black politician, one who was demanding redistribution from white America on behalf of his fellow African-Americans.

This is hilarious.

To ask so little of the dummy, the first black president in history, is the ultimate form of racism.
