Yet another obligatory “Twitter has worldwide failure” open thread; Update: Olympics to blame?

posted at 11:58 am on July 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Where were you in the Great Twitter Blackout of July 26, 2012?  Me, I was at my desk … having to do status updates on Facebook.

Tragic.

As of now, the Twitter website and the Tweetdeck services have been down about 20-25 minutes.  Tech Crunch says Twitter is working on the problem.  Maybe we can expect updates on their progress … via Myspace.

Be sure to tell your harrowing stories of survival in the comments section.

Update: The AP’s report suggests that the Olympics might be the cause:

Twitter spokeswoman Rachel Bremmer said Thursday that “we’re aware of the issue and are looking into it.” She didn’t immediately elaborate on the nature of the problem.

The Olympics are expected to bring an unprecedented surge of activity by sports fans on social networking sites.

I guess Twitter’s not going to get a gold medal for this.  The East German judge still gives them a 9.7, though.

This is the reason why among other things… I dont live or die via social media.

You all put yourself in this situation, live with it. I do not feel one bit sorry for those that are going nuts right now, in fact, this might be a good time to explore other things than to know right now what JimBob brushing his teeth and sooo clean.

Dang! I lost a really good tweet about the implications of the Iranian Nuclear virus playing AC/DC’s Thunderstruck and an even better one about what I had for breakfast.

How am I going to keep updated on the latest tweet from that ugly hag, Roseanne Barr? How will Brian Ross apologize now for his next false connection to the Tea Party? What will I do now that I won’t be up to date on the latest from the Kardashians?

I don’t really like most forms of social media, they’re just too shallow and don’t really allow for the level of depth I like. I was an enthusiastic proponent of the blog revolution and I suppose Twitter has its uses in certain situations, but give me a good old fashioned blog article like the ones here as opposed to “status updates” on Facebook.

(I can’t believe I’m calling blogs old-fashioned).

Doomberg on July 26, 2012 at 12:05 PM

What? You mean people will actually have to talk to one another?

kingsjester on July 26, 2012 at 12:05 PM

I blame Roseanne Barr’s odorous hatred, Rahm Emanuel’s hideous communist fascism and Mike Bloomberg’s demands that all people be put in pens wearing collars leashed to his office.

Lourdes on July 26, 2012 at 12:06 PM

Eh. Can’t get to it from work. (Company web filters block things like Twitter, Facebook, webmail because they tend to limit workday productivity.) Therefore not experiencing withdrawl symptoms….

apostic on July 26, 2012 at 12:06 PM

Well great. Now I’ll have to go back to telling random strangers on the street what I had for breakfast, why I’m looking forward to this season’s Walking Dead, and what I’m thinking of having for dinner. All in short, unconnected bursts less than 3 sentances long.

DrAllecon on July 26, 2012 at 12:06 PM

The problem? My guess is that clouds have covered the sun thus blocking badly needed energy generation onto the solar panels that runs Twitter’s servers.

Or, maybe there’s no wind so the wind turbines cannot generate electricity.

Well darn. I was expecting to see some interesting twitter feeds from teachers again today from a STL educational meeting about common core standards. It’s presented by the companies using tax dollars based on the education reform blueprint to make our students “college/career ready and globally competitive”.

No Child Left Behind didn’t work so let’s implement even more mandates and costs to the states to “fix” education! Yes! That’s the ticket!

They were trying to talk the teachers to accept the idea about how wonderful a national curriculum and increased testing/assessments will be for students. Loved this comment from yesterday:

I nominate Rahm Emanuel and Dan Savage for Most Evil Ever.

Chick-Fil-A has not turned away a single gay customer because the customer was gay. Chick-Fil-A has not discriminated against either employees or customers. But Democrats want to shut them down anyway, because they don’t stay silent on the issue of same-sex marriage. Dan Savage, founder of the Obama-endorsed It Gets Better anti-bullying campaign, has already taken to Twitter to try to define the term “Chick-Fil-A” as a form of anal sex – just as he did with Rick Warren and Rick Santorum when they failed to endorse same-sex marriage. This is bullying at its worst. And it shows the desperation of Democrats who will do anything – anything – to misdirect public attention from their dramatic policy ineptitude.

Seriously, evil. I’d say, hapless or clueless or just plain old rotten to the core but it appears it’s evil that plagues those two. Downright evil. No wonder they’re keen on Obama the Liar.

Twitter has worldwide failure

Why does anyone want to take Internet traffic, which is supported by multiple layers of DNS, server and routing redundancy, and force it all through a single web site???

The strategy of routing things through Facebook/Twitter etc NECESSARILY leads to poor reliability and increased vulnerability: increased “down time” is an EXPECTED result!!!

Haven’t we already tried this same strategy…and found it wanting??? Isn’t this just like AOL, COMPUSERVE, etc…only more restricted and with NO technical support or viable business model??

This is why if you EVER think you see me on Twitter or Facebook….it’s a FORGERY!!!
