Video: London mayor swipes at Romney at Olympics rally for criticizing UK’s preparation

posted at 5:21 pm on July 26, 2012 by Allahpundit

If you’d asked me last week how I saw Mitt’s big foreign policy trip playing out, having him name-checked as a naysaying stooge before a huge crowd at the start of the Olympics — by a Tory, no less — would not have popped to mind. It’s like a scene from a lost “Naked Gun” movie in which Frank Drebin runs for president.

Watch the quickie clip below from last night’s NBC interview to see what caused the kerfuffle. The word that got the British press hopping today is “disconcerting.” Said a pissy David Cameron about Romney’s Olympics stint at Salt Lake City, “It’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere.” (Upon hearing that, SLC’s mayor offered to get Cameron a map.) The hard-left Guardian quotes one senior British source as saying, “What a total shocker. We are speechless.” The Telegraph’s beating him up too:

Mitt Romney is perhaps the only politician who could start a trip that was supposed to be a charm offensive by being utterly devoid of charm and mildly offensive…

Not once have I heard him [in his stump speech] praise Britain or extol the special relationship he now belatedly trumpets. He even reprised his dislike of the NHS shortly before leaving for these shores of benighted, yellow-toothed natives who spend half their lives waiting in hospital, having tried as governor of Massachusetts to ensure that everyone in his state, as in Britain, had access to health care.

His current pledge to “revive” ties between the US and Britain sounds suspiciously like a talking point drummed up in a policy meeting and designed to differentiate himself from President Barack Obama for domestic purposes.

Romney’s since walked back his comments but the wet cement of this narrative is already turning dry. You’ll see three reactions on the right to all of this, I suspect. One: Who cares? It won’t cost Romney a single vote. As lefty Nate Silver put it, “[Doubtful] that Romney will carry Hertfordshire after this Olympics gaffe.” Two: Romney was right. Watch his comments again. He’s clearly been paying attention to British preparations from the unique perspective of a guy who’s had to deal with all of it before. Even Piers Morgan felt obliged to concede his points on CNN this afternoon. Fleet Street’s shooting the messenger here. Three: Why, Mitt, why? The point of the trip is to draw a contrast with The One’s oafish insistence on insulting the British after he took office, from removing the bust of Churchill in the Oval Office to this immortal moment of narcissistic idiocy. Romney’s going to restore the “special relationship” and his first step in doing so is by gladhanding every Brit in sight. (He even mentioned the Churchill bust today.) It’s the easiest diplomatic task imaginable. And yet, somehow, when Brian Williams tossed him a softball about whether British preparations looked okay, the executive/consultant within couldn’t resist a few criticisms. Baffling. This week is nothing but a big photo op, yet somehow it already involves Boris Johnson sneering at “a guy called Mitt Romney” at an Olympics rally. Good lord.

This wasn’t his only gaffe today either, but thanks to Johnson, this is the one that’ll end up in rotation on CNN and MSNBC.

That was absolutely idiotic. Brian Williams pitched Romney a softball by asking him how he thought the London Olympics would go. All Romney had to say was “my London is a beautiful city and I know they’ve been working so hard, I am looking forward to a great Olympiad.”

Instead, he criticized them – “it’s disconcerting that the security company screwed up and blah blah blah.” Totally unnecessary comments for Romney to make.

Having listened, Romney didn’t say anything particularly controversial, and as others have pointed out, it’s all true. But it’s an election year and simply uttering an incorrect syllable is controversial. So yes he probably should have said the Olympics will be an unqualified success, the greatest games in history, the athletes will swim in chocolate rivers, prance in lollipop fields, and ride into the stadium on unicorns.

But Britain’s pretty much a lost cause anyway, and we have much bigger fish to fry than worrying about what they think. Puts me in the nothingburger camp I guess.

Stupid, but true. Britain hired a security firm that couldn’t find enough people to handle the Olympics.

These remarks at NBC were very unwise. What’s the point? Is there a reason to comment on the problems? The Olympics have no bearing that I can see on his campaign, and I would think this would call for some political pablum—and that Romney is certainly capable of.

If a situation warrants criticism because of its bearing on our country, then speak up. Otherwise, why get Cameron riled up over something he knows is not going well?

After all the garbage that Obama has thrown at Great Britain, I would think Romney would be working on building relationships rather than ruffling feathers. He should have made some remarks about there are always a lot of logistic problems to overcome, etc., and tried to identify with Cameron rather than coming across as someone who knows better. He managed to do this later, why not right off the bat?

What happened here is Cameron thought he’d throw a sweet air kiss to barack, and now it’s blowing up in his face, with everyone climbing on board to say…Romney was right! Now the world media is taking a second look at London’s security problems, revisiting all of that, and Cameron comes off like just another pathetic European Obama butt boy. What a loser.

There is more at play here, too. All of these European socialist leaders want barack staying right where he is, crashing the American economy day in and day out so THEY don’t look quite as bad to their bankrupt nations. They know damn well Mitt Romney isn’t going to keep the nation running headlong into bankruptcy, and he’ll have the political capital to change things — something none of them will ever have in their nanny states. Two years from now, it’s going to be a roaring America and Europe on the brink, like it always is.

I guess if they were “prepared”, they wouldn’t of had to call in active duty military as security, and they might of displayed the correct flag for the NORK’s. Not that that was a bad thing, but sure does not fit in with the “everybody loves everybody” meme they are attempting to sell the games as.

djtnt on July 26, 2012 at 6:10 PM

No they won’t- the rest of the world will always dislike America.
American Exceptionalism….is a dirty word to them (as well as Ocommie)

FlaMurph on July 26, 2012 at 6:02 PM

If it was so cool, why did Romney backtrack?

Schadenfreude on July 26, 2012 at 6:10 PM

…or that it’s cold, the house is dirty, they have bad table manners, and Mrs. Cameron looks matronly, dull, and sad.

Punchenko on July 26, 2012 at 5:41 PM

Lol, true. But Mitt already knew all of these things when he accepted the dinner invite.

Lawdawg86 on July 26, 2012 at 6:11 PM

After all the garbage that Obama has thrown at Great Britain, I would think Romney would be working on building relationships rather than ruffling feathers. He should have made some remarks about there are always a lot of logistic problems to overcome, etc., and tried to identify with Cameron rather than coming across as someone who knows better. He managed to do this later, why not right off the bat?

I mean, this is just good manners.

Diplomatic Fail.

INC on July 26, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Most of what he said was very complimentary….all of this over the word disconcerting. He obviously should have put it differently, but at the same time all of this outrage seems contrived to me. Overlbown. Silly.

Terrye on July 26, 2012 at 6:11 PM

Also, Terrye, how many leftists do you know to criticize Obama?

Schadenfreude on July 26, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Somebody changed her cheerleader outfit from a big M to a big R! Rah rah, Terrye.

AllahsNippleHair on July 26, 2012 at 5:56 PM

Actually, I have been consistent in my hopes that Obama would not win the presidency, I did not want him to win it in 2008 and I do not want him to win re-election. So yeah, I have been rooting for the Republican in both races.

Schadenfreude I have heard a lot of leftists go after Obama..for all sorts of things. In fact, one of the reasons that voter enthusiasm is down for Democrats is that Obama has disappointed the left. In fact, he has disappointed just about everyone.

My point to you is that you rarely if ever miss an opportunity to go after Romney..if it were not this silliness from today it would be some other leftist generated outrage. And there you are..ready to carry their water.

Terrye on July 26, 2012 at 6:04 PM

Neither does anyone else want Obama to win. You think you’re some kind of specialty or what? The difference between you and some of us here is that we can see faults in our candidate and hope that those faults don’t hurt the overall cause. McCain’s candidacy was a huge failure, but you cheered his idiocy.
Your fanaticism is noted, Terrye, but you seem to be a kool aid drinker, but your kool aid is RINO red at best.

Just an example of the intelligence level of London’s mayor, Boris Johnson -

“Whether it’s in theatre, comedy, sports, music or politics, Muslims are challenging the traditional stereotypes and showing that they are, and want to be, a part of the mainstream community. That’s why I urge people, particularly during Ramadan, to find out more about Islam, increase your understanding and learning, even fast for a day with your Muslim neighbour and break your fast at the local mosque. I would be very surprised if you didn’t find that you share more in common than you thought. Muslims are at the heart of every aspect of society. Their contribution is something that all Londoners benefit from. Muslim police officers, doctors, scientists and teachers are an essential part of the fabric of London.”

The man is stark raving mad.

The rest of the Anglosphere seem to be really sensitive about remarks made by Americans. If a British Prime Minister had said the same exact thing about Olympic games in the US it would hardly be news.

Romney: ‘Looking Forward to the Bust of Winston Churchill Being in the Oval Office Again’

At an event in London, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, “I’m looking forward to the bust of Winston Churchill being in the Oval Office again.”

Mitt Romney at London fundraiser: “I’m looking forward to the bust of Winston Churchill being in the Oval Office again.” #watersedge?

— Kasie Hunt (@kasie) July 26, 2012

President Obama famously sent Churchill’s bust back to Britain soon after coming into office. As the Telegraph reported then:

A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government’s art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back.

The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush’s tenure.

But when British officials offered to let Mr Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: “Thanks, but no thanks.”

Maybe so… For the moment…..

But look ahead, lets just suppose- and God forbid, I am not hoping for this- but just suppose Achmed and the boys gets a little crazy over there, and the result is fatalities from a terrorist attack in London.

God forbid there is something like a Munich, but NOW all the pressure is on the Brits to secure all these venues and protect all those people. Achmed wouldn’t think twice about making a statement for all the world to see. The security deployment will have its issues.

Just sayin- but if that were to happen…all the Mitt hate comes back to haunt.
