Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on July 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama has mostly avoided talking about the economy on the campaign trail, even though it’s by far and away the most important issue for voters in every poll taken this cycle. When he does talk about the economy, Obama usually fumbles the ball. First he told the White House press corps that “the private sector is doing fine” when it obviously is not, and then last week he told small business owners that “you didn’t build that — someone else made that happen” while arguing to hike their taxes.

This week is no exception.  As Obama returned once again to the economy to undo some of the damage with his “you didn’t build that” remark, he did a victory dance of sorts in Oakland:

“We tried that and it didn’t work,” Obama said of Mitt Romney’s proposed tax cuts and spending cuts, which he dismissed as a Bush-style “top down” economic policy. “Just like we’ve tried their plan, we tried our plan — and it worked,” he added later in the speech. “That’s the difference. That’s the choice in this election. That’s why I’m running for a second term.”

It worked? His plan promised that unemployment wouldn’t go above 8%.  It hasn’t gone below 8% since he put it in place.  His plan promised that the plan would increase GDP by 3.7% by the end of 2010.  We’re heading toward a GDP in the 1s, or possibly lower.  Obama’s plan promised to find 1.529 million jobs for women.  Instead, we’ve added only 2.412 million jobs since the start of the recovery in June 2009, and jobs for women over 16 years of age have only gone up 617,000.

I guess that’s Mission Accomplished in the era of Hope and Change, eh?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Ed, there you go bringing facts into the picture again. Liberals are judged by their intentions, don’t you know.

If what we have means his plan worked, I hate to think what failure would have looked like. Of course, “worked” probably just means he fooled his loyal minions into thinking he was doing something for them.

I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again: all his life he’s never been challenged and has had people from his grandparents to his professors who doted over him. As such, he simply can’t believe everybody doesn’t accept everything he says without question.

Answer: Fast and Furious

Question: What is Obama putting AK-47s “in the hands of criminals” in the Mexican Drug Cartels.

It’s interesting to see an intellectual pantywaste try to promote a position. The use of pronouns and vague generalities does nothing but fit upon a bumper sticker

We tried that and it didn’t work.

Who’s “we”?
Define “tried”
What was “that” in specifics, please.
Please define “work” vs “not working”….

“(W)e tried our plan — and it worked.”

Make the lie big enough…

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

“Just like we’ve tried their plan, we tried our plan — and it worked,”

For some reason I’ve got Orwell on the brain this morning.

And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed – if all records told the same tale – then the lie passed into history and became truth. “Who controls the past,” ran the Party slogan, “controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”

The White House says the office will coordinate the work of communities and federal agencies to ensure that African-American youngsters are better prepared for high school, college and career.

Obama is announcing his election-year initiative Wednesday night in a speech to the civil rights group the National Urban League as he seeks to rally black voters. Aides say his executive order, to be signed Thursday, will set a goal of producing “a more effective continuum” of programs for African-American students.” – AP

The BIG LIE.

Actually, that’s TWO BIG LIES.

BIG LIE #1: The Bush Tax Cuts didn’t work.
BIG LIE #2: The Obama plan (including the Obama Stimulus) did work.

Ed Morrissey already adderessed BIG LIE #2 and showed how Obama’s plan did NOT work. It didn’t even come close to working as advertised.

But let’s now address BIG LIE #1. Obama claims that the Bush Tax Cuts didn’t work.

Obama LIES.

President George W. Bush “inherited” the Dot Com bust and the 9/11/2001 attacks, both of which hurt our economy and decreased employment (increased unemployment) and decreased tax revenues.

The second part of the “Bush Tax Cuts” were signed May 28, 2003, and turned the economy around… both employment and revenues went UP as a result of the Bush Tax Cuts.

For employment numbers, use the Employment-population ratio: http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS12300000
For Revenue numbers, use: http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/budget/fy2013/assets/hist01z1.xls

Let’s look at the Employment-population ratio in the last month of each Fiscal Year (September) from 2000 onward:

Year Employment-population ratio in September
2000 64.2
2001 63.5
2002 63.0
2003 62.0
2004 62.3
2005 62.8
2006 63.1
2007 62.9
2008 61.9
2009 58.7
2010 58.5
2011 58.4

And let’s look at Receipts (Revenues) from 2000 onward:

Table 1.1—SUMMARY OF RECEIPTS, OUTLAYS, AND SURPLUSES OR DEFICITS (–): 1789–2017

Year Total Receipts (in millions of dollars)
2000 2,025,191
2001 1,991,082
2002 1,853,136
2003 1,782,314
2004 1,880,114
2005 2,153,611
2006 2,406,869
2007 2,567,985
2008 2,523,991
2009 2,104,989
2010 2,162,724
2011 2,303,466

Starting with Fiscal Year 2000, note how both employment and revenues went DOWN in FY 2001, DOWN again in FY 2002, and DOWN again in FY 2003. That’s the effect of the Dot Com bust and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

But the Bush Tax Cuts turned the economy around. Note how both employment and revenues went UP in FY 2004, UP again in FY 2005, UP again in FY 2006, and while employment dropped slightly in 2007, revenues were UP again that year.

The Bush Tax Cuts improved employment and improved revenues…

Revenues in FY 2007 were 44% larger than FY 2003 revenues!

It wasn’t until the Democrats took majority control of the House and Senate, in January 2007, that the economy really started to tank.

The Democrats have been in majority control (holding 2+ out of 3 of the House, Senate and Presidency) for 5.5 years, and they spent the first half of that driving the economy in the ditch and the second half of that leaving the economy in the ditch.

If the Bush Tax Cuts are allowed to expire, and tax rates go up, both jobs and revenue will be lost. We will have lower employment (higher unemployment) and lower revenues.

Obama is LYING when he claims that the Bush Tax Cuts didn’t work.

And to allow any part of the Bush Tax Cuts to expire would be irresponsible at best, intentionally destructive at worst.

If by “plan” our benevolent god-king means “taking America down several pegs,” turning us into a third-world banana republic, having a permanent, growing underclass dependant on government, and basically concentrating all the power into the Executive Branch to the point that we live in a de-facto dictatorship, then yes – the “plan” worked brilliantly.

still no news of libor on HA… maybe because of this:
http://host.madison.com/ct/news/opinion/column/john_nichols/john-nichols-activists-up-the-ante-on-romney-s-london/article_0ed4aff8-d71e-11e1-a583-0019bb2963f4.html

Mitt Romney will show his true colors tonight, when he slips behind closed doors in a foreign city to collect money from international bankers who are mired in scandal.

Romney, whom fellow Republicans describe as a “vulture capitalist,” may be in London to cheer on the U.S. team in the Olympics. But when it comes to economics, his loyalty does not appear to be to Team USA. Rather, it’s to the banking-industry insiders who know no country — and, it would appear, know few ethical bounds.

London is abuzz over the LIBOR (London InterBank Offered Rate) scandal, which saw some of the biggest banks in the world report false interest rates in order to fool investors and game the international economy. Bob Diamond, the top man in Barclay’s Bank, had to resign from his position after than bank paid almost $500 million in fines.

Diamond also resigned as the co-chair of Mitt Romney’s $75,000 a person fundraising event in London tonight.

Not to worry. Another Barclay’s insider (chief lobbyist Patrick Durkin) took Diamond’s place as a co-chair for the Romney event, along with officials of Bank of Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Goldman Sachs, Blackstone and Wells Fargo Securities — and, of course, Bain Capital Europe.

As the investigation of banks implicated in LIBOR rate-fixing expands, Romney’s decision to go ahead with the London fundraising events is an act either of boldness or recklessness. The presumptive Republican nominee for president seems to think he can get away with raising millions of dollars in a foreign capital from scandal-plagued international bankers.

But grassroots activists in the U.S. are upping the ante by demanding that Romney immediately reveal the names of the bankers and financial insiders attending his London fundraising events. In particular, they are pushing for the release of any and all information relating to Romney’s interactions with donors associated with Barclays and any other institutions that have been linked to the LIBOR scandal.

The Center for Responsive Politics identifies Barclays as the largest source of campaign donations to Romney, and a Maine state legislator who has been in the forefront of campaign finance reform and corporate watchdog fights wants to know more about the relationship between Romney and the Barclays donors.

“Americans have a right to know who Romney’s donors are so they can understand what policy agendas are in line with those donations,” says Maine state Rep. Diane Russell, D-Portland. “We all have the right to donate to political campaigns, and the responsibility to own up to those donations. It’s part of the democratic process.”

Russell has started a national petition drive demanding that Romney come clean about the Barclays ties and the London fundraising event.

The “Mitt Romney: Reveal Your Secret Donors” petition reads:

It’s time we return to government of, by and for the people — not government of, bought, and paid for by special interests. The job of a Wall Street banker is to get a good return on their investment, and unfortunately, they’ve taken those skills to Washington — and now the presidency.

Mitt Romney is attending an elite London fundraiser — $25,000 to $75,000 per plate — hosted by the CEOs at the center of the LIBOR scandal threatening our already fragile economy. Executives of at least three other banks under investigation are co-chairs of the fundraiser, according to invitations obtained by The Washington Post.

At the same time, too many Americans are falling out of the middle class when they are working hard to climb the ladder into it. In fact, middle-class workers have seen their incomes drop by nearly 8 percent in three years and their wealth disappear by a staggering 40 percent.

We believe politicians should work for us, not their corporate sponsors. It is time for Mitt Romney to fully disclose his donors — and how much they are giving to his campaign.

Russell set out to collect 10,000 signatures.

She’ll get them. And a lot more.

The use of pronouns and vague generalities does nothing but fit upon a bumper sticker

We tried that and it didn’t work

ted c on July 26, 2012 at 8:15 AM

Actually, I’d dare any liberal to start driving around with this bumper sticker:

“Obama/Biden 2012 – Our Plan Worked”

It’d make every driver behind them start their day with a laugh.

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on July 26, 2012 at 9:57 AM

A la Clinton, it depends on what the definition of “worked” is.

Yep, the plan to transform America into Europe West is working.

I appreciate your fact-filled posts. Thank you.

Fallon on July 26, 2012 at 8:59 AM

Thank you for the positive feedback. I appreciate that.

Obama and his sycophantic media are repeating the BIG LIES on a daily basis.

The truth is that in just 4 years, from 2003 to 2007, the 2003 Bush Tax Cuts led to 44% higher tax revenues and over 8 million more people employed!

(BLS.gov numbers show 137,736,000 people employed in 2003, and 146,047,000 people employed in 2007, an increase of 8,311,000 more people employed in 2007 than in 2003!)

It was the policies of the Democrats that tanked the economy in 2008 and 2009.

Who passed the Community Reinvestment Act? Carter and the Democrats.
Who expanded the Community Reinvestment Act? Clinton and the Democrats.

The Republicans tried for years to rein in Fannie & Freddie, while the Demonrats obstructed, said that there were not any “safety and soundness” issues, and accused the Republicans of racism. (shocker!)

Watch Maxine Waters and other Democrats accuse Republicans of racism as the Republicans tried to increase regulation of Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, and Democrats covered up the corruption.

It was the Democrats who drove the economy into the ditch, including Senator Obama who was a Senator in the minority in 2005-6 and a Senator in the majority 2007-8. Obama was one of the
Top Recipients of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Campaign Contributions, 1989-2008 (exceeded only by Chris Dodd and John Kerry, and if you consider that Obama was only campaigning for Federal office 2004-2008, Obama’s per year receipts of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Campaign Contributions easily tops the list).

It wasn’t the Bush Tax Cuts that tanked the economy. It was the Democrats’ reckless, irresponsible, and likely criminal handling of Fannie/Freddie the created the sub-prime mortgage crisis that tanked the economy. And his crony capitalist Stimulus made things WORSE, not better.

I’m just fed up with the lies of Obama and his sycophantic media.

More Corruption
“US military officers accused one of the highest-ranking US commanders in Afghanistan of trying to cover up a scandal at a US-funded hospital in Kabul to limit bad news in an election year.

The problems date back to 2010, when US officers expressed concerns about the possible embezzlement of funds from the Afghan-run Dawood National Military Hospital and the lack of treatment provided to wounded Afghan soldiers.

Some Afghan soldiers died of malnutrition at the hospital, in conditions that one retired Army colonel described as “Auschwitz-like.”

Several officers told US lawmakers on Tuesday that they were encouraged by Lieutenant General William Caldwell, then head of the NATO-led training mission in Afghanistan, not to report the problems to the Pentagon inspector general.

“The general did not want bad news to leave his command before the election – or AFTER the election,” Colonel Gerald Carozza, Jr., a now-retired US Army judge advocate, said in written testimony to the House Committee on Oversight.

Colonel Mark Fassl, who was inspector general of the NATO-led training mission in Afghanistan, echoed Carozza’s concerns.

He cited Caldwell as saying “How could we do this or make this request with elections coming?” and then said the lieutenant general added, “He calls me Bill” — saying he believed Caldwell was referring to Obama.
