Mary Katharine and Krauthammer on Romney’s Olympics comments: What was he thinking?

posted at 9:02 pm on July 26, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite. MK was planning to write about this but I got to the story first, so I want to make sure she has her say on the front page too. Here she is on “Special Report,” in sync with the other ‘Hammer in mystification at Mitt’s strategy. How did it come to pass that a candidate famous — infamous, even — for being cautious and scripted decided to venture a little candid criticism of his host country on a goodwill tour? So fixed is the narrative of a Romney foreign gaffe-o-rama now that the dumb lefty British press is straining to find screw-ups even where they don’t exist. Ah well. His trip to Israel will be even easier than this one. No one can mess that up. I think.

Exit question: Is it time for Team Mitt to start pushing some counter-spin? After all, who wants a president who’ll tell foreign nations what they want to hear? What we need is a leader with the stones to sit down, look them in the eye, and say that they need to step it up on a global event for which they’ve spent the past seven years preparing.

..you know, Terrye, it could be lost in the fog of the upcoming two weeks. The Olympics are gonna get a lot of ink and — based on the stuff we have been hearing so far — it just might turn out to be a huge security stink bomb. Face it, it takes a lot of skill and organization to bring off a set of games. Before Uberroth and Romney, these events (Munich and Montreal) were real catastrophes. (And, frankly, I think the Brits are using this to bury the fumbled Nork soccer match opening and the Palestinian pout about Israel’s request for a moment of silence to observe the ’72 massacre. Rest assured there might be much more in store.)

In which case, Romney’s remarks might be thought of as prescient — if remembered at all.

The War Planner on July 26, 2012 at 10:07 PM

I hope nothing bad happens. I think that most people will ignore all of this..or they will hear what Romney said and think..that is it? What is the big deal?

The media lives in a bubble, and really of us political junkies do too…we assume that most people are into all this and they are not. So, no, I don’t think it will be that big a deal in the long run..unless something does happen. And then people will remember what he said.

That is not fair. Mitt Romney is not perfect, no one is…and he could have worded this differently…but then the Brits did not have to make such asses of themselves over a simple statement like this either..I mean really..they get bent out of shape over the word disconcerting? And then there are people making fun of the fact that the Romneys have a horse in the competition? That is just petty.

The Olympic stadium in Sarajevo also became a world-class shooting range, complete with live human targets.

So true, I was in that stadium in 1996, saw the blood stained floors in the underground corridors, the placed still reeked of death. They actually used the undergrounds as a sort of mourge. They even boobytrapped some of the places. The Ski Jump area was one giant minefield, helped clear that what a b!tch that was.

By the summer of ’97 the placed was cleaned up quite nice anb I got to see U2 perform there live. I even got to speak with a very cute girl that evening, Dolores O’Riordan who is the lead singer of the Cranberries. Made for an all around excellent night.

I’ll tell you what Romney was probably thinking … the same thing most rank and file Brits are thinking. He has probably been reading the UK press over the past couple of weeks as it has been one fiasco after another:

Security personnel not reporting to work.

Not enough trained security personnel.

Security personnel who don’t even speak English.

Army having to pull security duty on an emergency basis because the company contracted for security can’t get the number of trained people they contracted for.

A traffic plan that is causing gridlock.

The people in the UK have been saying the same thing about preparedness for the Olympics for weeks.

But–oh. my. word.–that was a refreshingly straightforward, competent-sounding assessment of the situation. (And I say this as someone who is much, much less than thrilled with the thought of Romney as the Republican candidate.)

I’m wondering if Romney misunderstood the tone of the question–if he assumed his interviewer had heard the same info he had about the problems and was asking the question with that in mind (instead of, essentially, making small talk).

But…uhhh…Romney is all that stands between us and another Obama term. I think people will be willing to cut him some slack.

This story only has legs if the barack campaign takes it up, which they won’t, for the reason you describe above. Perhaps a few surrogates here or there will try to keep it alive, but the media will be clamoring for campaign quotes, and they’ll be saying “no comment.” The potential for egg on their face down the road is too high. If a campaign official does weigh in, such as axelgrease, we’ll know how reckless the campaign’s desperation has become.

Rational Thought on July 26, 2012 at 10:59 PM

I’d say this was disconcerting…And the UK Govt. knew about it a month ago. From Romney’s perspective of actual experience, his criticism is valid and the reaction of British politicians comes off as a bit petulant.

“Safety is a huge issue for the Olympics, and one that has become a painful embarrassment both for the British government and for G4S, which had promised to provide some 10,400 guards. G4S acknowledged last week it would be unable to fully staff the games, a last-minute admission that forced the government to call in 3,500 other soldiers to help meet the shortfall.

On Thursday, Jeremy Hunt, the government secretary in charge of the Olympics, acknowledged that even G4S’s reduced numbers may not hold up, telling the BBC he had put the extra troops on standby “in the unlikely situation that G4S’s performance deteriorates from where it is today.

The seeming inability of government officials to get a proper grip with staffing issues has been compounded by a series of industrial disputes — including one that threatens to lead to a 24-hour-long walkout by border guards at London’s Heathrow Airport on July 26, the day before the London Olympics begin…

Hunt’s announcement about more troops came as his Cabinet colleague, Home Secretary Theresa May, acknowledged that officials had been warned last month about Olympic security manpower issues, far earlier than has previously been admitted.

You are either dishonest or an idiot to cover for, or succumb to the stupidity of the ” outrage” the britons have over factual statements made by the next President of the USA.

In case you weren’t paying attention, every major Liberal leaning network ABC CBS NBC CNN MSNBC Reported on those EXACT same concerns -security and transportation strikes- over the last 10 days.

Where’ s the outrage against Matt Lauer or Brian Williams for initially saying what Mitt was repeating. Team Mitt needs to put out a statement saying ” Super Mitt misspoke earlier on the Olympics and what he really said was that the Uk has really crappy food.”

FlaMurph on July 26, 2012 at 11:02 PM

I don’t always agree with Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway, but he had an interesting post on this.I think he is right.

So, basically, Romney said something that was largely true about the Olympics, the British press didn’t like it, a minor controversy ensued, and amends were made. It’s over, right? Oh, if you think it’s over you don’t understand what silly season really is, because within a few hours after the Olympics kerfuffle, Joshua Keating had dug up a quote from Romney’s book No Apologies about England which many on the left are trying to claim is some kind of insult to the United Kingdom:

England [sic] is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn’t make things that people in the rest of the world want to buy. And if it hadn’t been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler’s ambitions. Yet only two lifetimes ago, Britain ruled the largest and wealthiest empire in the history of humankind. Britain controlled a quarter of the earth’s land and a quarter of the earth’s population.

Andrew Sullivan takes this quote as evidence of Romney’s “contempt” for the U.K., while Keating calls the quote “not-so-flattering.” I have to wonder, though, if either one of them bothered to read anything beyond the words “just a small island.” That part, at least is absolutely true. The island of Great Britain is listed as 9th in terms of total land area among the world’s islands with just 80,823 square miles of total land area. He’s also largely correct that the U.K. is not, and never really has been a major world exporter, although there was a time when it was the largest importer on the planet. And, the relative safety from invasion that the English Channel has given the Brits over the centuries is a simple historical fact. Despite many who may have wanted to, nobody has successfully invaded Great Britain in 946 years. If the logistics of getting from the continent of Europe to Great Britain had been easier, it seems quite likely that they would’ve been subjected to as many invasions as many of the other nations of Europe. Despite all of this, the Brits rose to become the mightiest nation on the planet and controlled territory in North America, Africa, and Asia along with islands in all the world’s ocean’s.

I doubt any of today’s kerfuffle is going to have any impact on the election. This is just another example of the silliness that this campaign has descended into, and when you add the wild frenzy of the British tabloids into it, it was inevitable that this would become a story for a day. The fact, though, that people used the Olympics non-troversey as an excuse to go back and dig up a quote from a book which they then blatantly misrepresented shows us the extent to which “journalism” has devolved. If you can’t find decent copy for the day, then don’t make stuff up guys.

Right. Drawn out for emphasis, as in “Jeeeesus H. Christ” and “if he was sooooo concerned.” These are two words among many that are so commonly drawn out in that way for rhetorical emphasis that it has become ubiquitous. For example, in your response above you drew out the “i” sound in “right.” And you did it for emphasis. The mocking of Krauthammer’s stutter exists only in your head because you do not like the opinions being expressed and thus feel the need to impugn the character of the person expressing them.

If this is all too complicated for you, try this: You called someone a bigot because you didn’t like his political opinion. That kind of thing has been going around these days. And it’s gotten verrrrry boring.

Norwegian on July 26, 2012 at 11:07 PM

This is just stupid…I see so if anyone disagrees with CK, he is a bad person. I bet you have disagreed with the man a time or two yourself, unless of course you are a Charlesbot.

BTW, Krauthammer does not have a stutter. He is a quadriplegic. He has to stop speaking from time to time get air. And to assume that someone is making fun of a stutter the man does not have is just desperation from a sore loser.

Terrye on July 26, 2012 at 11:48 PM

krauthammer already cost us two Senate Seats in he 2010 – Now he going after the presidency. What Jerks.

This is true…but apparently Romney was not supposed to notice any of that…and to hear Krauthammer tell it, the Romneys were not supposed to have a horse in the Olympics either, because that is hoity toity or something like that. Terrye on July 26, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Romney was supposed to lie and risk looking like an uninformed fool if there’s a breach of security. Allahpundit describes a question as to which there is no good answer as a softball. Some analysis.

Basilsbest on July 26, 2012 at 10:30 PM

Unforced error. All he had to say is. I have heard they are having a few problems but am sure they will over come them. That is what a President should say.

But no President should ever attend a security briefing on a Country in the news and then talk about it without specific permission to do so. Romney did this. Syria now knows they have someone reporting to Britain.

Also the Horse was OK but having no idea what his wife does with the Horse is not at all OK. I used to think he was a good husband. No longer. My wife would have had me sleeping on the sofa for weeks had I shown that little concern for her interest. I mean her horse in in the Olympics and Mitt has no idea what the event is (first video on page).

Steveangell on July 27, 2012 at 12:05 AM

7 years and $14 Billion for the Brits to plan and host the Olympics…so they’re a bit touchy

Oh come on..it is not as if he leaked classified information just to make himself look good..our sitting president did that..all Romney did was mention he had met with them.

And as for the horses..well I just do not think this is a big deal..this is his wife’s passion, not his.

And is it an unforced error? Maybe,I am not sure, but it is not as if he called them a bunch of idiots or something.I heard what he said and it was very mild actually. He also said some very complimentary things as well. I think the media is making a mountain out of a molehill.

Terrye on July 27, 2012 at 12:19 AM

I don’t get the outrageous outrage over this.

Then again, I’m not a stuck-up Brit.

eaglescout_1998 on July 27, 2012 at 1:06 AM

Mitt should have kept his eyes on the ball. Britain is a nation we are close to, share a heritage with, and have relied on for a long time. There just ain’t that many of ‘em. You make nice with those folks, especially if you’re using them as a campaign prop. Gratuitous criticism is just dumb.

J.E. Dyer on July 27, 2012 at 1:06 AM

It doesn’t matter what Romney says or does, the media will be waiting to twist it to use it against him. That said, yeah this was an unforced error. Pity the UK is playing it up as much as they are, considering if they sink Romney, they’re going to get four more years of a president who hates them.

Aodhan on July 27, 2012 at 1:12 AM

What we need is a leader with the stones to sit down, look them in the eye, and say that they need to step it up on a global event for which they’ve spent the past seven years preparing.

Really AP? It’s that bad huh? How would you feel if they told US that? Even if you think it…YOU DON’T SAY IT ON TV!! For goodness, STOP SPINNING and let the guy learn from his mistake. No one is born a diplomat. But giving this outrageous cover is NOT HELPING!!

It makes you sound so stupid to spin this crap…like that!

much love AP, but that’s just b.s. dude.

The Brits were more concerned about the briefing leaking. We are not sure whether he did damage there. He could have.

Yes the press is playing this up but that is why the error was unforced. Romney knows the press will jump on something like this. Again do not rain on someones parade. Basic protocol.

The Brits have always been touchy that was to be expected. I guess that us breaking away from them or something.

Steveangell on July 27, 2012 at 1:20 AM

this was a major booboo today….I didn’t realize the mayor was addressing 600K people. good grief.

Honestly, this could be seen as creating a national security issue for those people. Now the world know they are failing to secure the games…the teams must feel so safe now.

Grace_is_sufficient on July 27, 2012 at 5:50 AM

I didn’t watch the video, but did anyone make the case that if Romney has said that the Brits did a good job, then the lefty media would have been looking for everything that goes wrong at the Olympics while playing the video of what Romney said over and over and over?

Did anyone make that point?

blink on July 27, 2012 at 1:51 AM

Of course not…they also did not make the point that the very press having a fit has been saying nothing but critical things about the Olympics in London for months…

Terrye on July 27, 2012 at 7:03 AM

Lighten up, guys. Mitt was just pointing out what has already been said in the British press about their preparations or lack thereof. Seems as if the lefty leaders got their egos bruised.

Can.I.be.in.the.middle on July 27, 2012 at 1:21 AM

Are you kidding? The news media, both here and in Britain has been ragging on them for the crappy job they are doing handling the Olympics…the people who were doing the private security security screwed up so bad that the British had to bring in 18,000 regular army to handle security and the man got his ass chewed out in front of Parliament. All Romney was doing was reacting to news that has been in the media for days and weeks.

Terrye on July 27, 2012 at 7:07 AM

J.E. Dyer on July 27, 2012 at 1:06 AM

Oh please…on the other hand we are an ally of theirs and the media over there has been crapping on our presidents for years..with impunity…for just about everything. At least they have not wished Romney dead the way they did Bush. Yet.

And after Romney made some mild and innocuous comments, they act like a bunch of screaming ninnies…take passages from his book out of context, insult Salt Lake City, Utah and in general make asses of themselves.

It might be a good idea in the future if presidential candidates just skip Britain on these trips. What is the point?

Terrye on July 27, 2012 at 7:11 AM

Steveangell on July 27, 2012 at 1:20 AM

How did he do damage? Really? He said he met with them..apparently he is supposed to act as if they do not exist and pretend he never heard of them…and yet here this man goes and just opens his mouth and gives an honest answer to questions. What he should have done was lie, dissemble and placate. People complain about how vacuous politicians are and then when someone comes along who does not act like a politician, they complain about that too.

Terrye on July 27, 2012 at 7:14 AM

Mitt did fine and should not have walked back anything. The walking back was a blunder.

Mitt is respectful of our allies more so than Britain seems to care for its liberal self: the Brits acted like supreme jerks.

I suspect they like Churchill no better than Obama does.

Jerks!

Mitt, DON’T APOLOGIZE TO FOREIGN JERKS!

Sherman1864 on July 27, 2012 at 7:40 AM

I have lived in England, and to think London would be a good venue is idiotic. Maybe they can add a new sport – puke jumping. Mitt was being kind.

WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS and CONSERVATIVES WHO WILL POINT OUT THAT CAMERON SCHMOOZED WITH OBAMA DURING HIS USA VISIT AND REFUSED TO MEET WITH CONSERVATIVES?

REMEMBER THE HOT DOG AND BASKETBALL PIX WITH CAMERON AND OBAMA?

And, yes, it’s in all caps because I’m SCREAMING, out of sheer outrage that Republicans and Conservatives simply cannot marshall their facts fast enough to point out that Cameron is no friend–so KUDOS TO ROMNEY!

Stop undercutting your own nominee. You should be CHEERING HIM!

Geezus.

American conservatives expressed surprise that the Prime Minister had not made more effort to forge relationships with the party, which controls the House of Representatives and could yet win control of the Senate as well as the White House in November.

A second foreign policy adviser to Mr Romney said: “Cameron’s contacts with Republicans are really quite limited, and have been going back to when [George W.] Bush was president.” The adviser added: “In many respects Cameron is like Obama.”

Aggie95 on July 26, 2012 at 10:37 PM

IF something happens, god forbid, you KNOW what the result will be. mitt be blamed ala palin/giffords for it. msnbc will have a field day “speculating” and doing “analysis” on how mitts comment jinned up the terrorists, and how he really kinda sorta is a co-conspiritor.

Romney is sure to be welcomed enthusiastically in Israel, and very enthusiastically in Poland. Now the Obamamedia will be forced to contrast ………

oh mna. you floored me with that one. good one! like IF he is welcmed enthusiastically in isreal and poland it would actually be reported! oh man, a knee slapper. so much important olympics coverage to get to biff…we just dont have time for the mitt impresses on the worldwide stage thing…

t8stlikchkn on July 27, 2012 at 8:18 AM

Romney was asked a question, he responded as someone who had BTDT RE: Running the Olympics. How the heck is that a gaffe and how is it wrong for him to respond in a truthful manner?

Nathan_OH on July 27, 2012 at 9:01 AM

Considering that Williams question to Romney was unrehearsed and Cameron’s response was ‘crafted’, Cameronl appeared to be a whiny, inexperienced diplomat.

Jus’ sayin’.

socalcon on July 27, 2012 at 9:15 AM

I guess I am struggling with this – he made a pretty mild acknowledgement of what everyone knows to be true. He was not impolite about it – I mean disconcerting?

Where is that famed brit stiff upper lip? Of course let’s face it, the Brits unfortunately have the same disease the rest of Europe has. Today, they are a shell of their former selves.

But if they took afront to it, they did and Mitt should be aware that speaking the truth about things that are already well known and published need to be very carefully considered when discussed when you are the US President.

If this is a liability I would love to see it in more politicians. He wasn’t mean spirited and didn’t froth at the mouth pointing fingers. And btw the way, this means nothing to the race here. I think Dr. K is over-reacting.
