Brutal new ads: “It Worked,” “Didn’t Build That”

posted at 7:21 pm on July 26, 2012 by Allahpundit

A possible caveat to Sean Trende’s piece yesterday arguing that attack ads can’t hurt Obama because voters already know him so well: What if the ad showcases something he’s said recently that appears to reveal his true economic beliefs? There’s virtually no new, relevant information about him available — except his gaffes, as new windows onto his thinking. You’ve got two bruising spots here that play on that, one from Team Mitt picking up on his claim that “our plan worked” and the other from the American Future Fund targeting the “you didn’t build that” line that’s got Obama hyperventilating. They strike me as attacks not so much on his economic perspicacity (although they’re that too) as attacks on his character. The vibe from both spots is indignation at his refusal to recognize the economic reality that Americans live with. He comes off, more than anything, as callous, not merely naive. Tough stuff. No wonder he’s doing those gauzy West Wing “fireside chat” ads now.

We’ve been over the argument that “you did’t build that” was taken out of context in other posts. Re: the new lefty argument that “our plan worked” was taken out of context too, i.e. that by “our plan” Obama meant the Clinton-era tax rates favored by Democrats and not the dismal failure you and I know as Obamanomics, read Guy Benson for a rebuttal. It’s easier to scream about O being taken out of context, I guess, than it is to try to defend his jobs record. But even if you accept his own spin, it’s simply goofy to imply that restoring ’90s-era tax rates for the top income bracket alone will be some kind of panacea for an economy saddled with 21st-century fiscal liabilities. Your plan’s not going to work with new revenue disappearing into the widening black hole of Medicare and Social Security, champ. Either man up and start pushing across-the-board tax hikes with entitlement reform (as some liberals fear he might in a second term) or stop talking about “the plan.” There is no plan in any meaningful sense except winning the election.

The thing is, Obama doesn’t want to restore Clinton era tax rates. He wants to maintain 75% of Bush’s tax cuts. He just wants to get rid of the 25% or so that went to those making over $250,000. So even if Obama is talking about “the plan” as being Clinton’s tax rates, he doesn’t want to follow “the plan.”

The biggest problem with Obama’s ‘You didn’t build that’ remarks is the way he’s saying it. He’s condescending to business owners as if they’re stupid and don’t understand that we live in a society with others.

He just comes across as nasty and mean-spirited. He made himself look horrible and he can’t walk that back no matter how hard he tries.

Shocking shocking. And it not just business owners, but the millions that dream of building their own business. On the class warfare front, take the attack to saying the O is killing (or stifling) the dreams of those that aren’t wealthy now but dream of starting their own business and becoming wealthy. That is the American dream, exhibit 1: its being stomped on.

anotherJoe on July 26, 2012 at 7:36 PM

TheAudacityofNOPE on July 26, 2012 at 7:36 PM

Both are wicked awesome but I’ve got to say that the second one is more effective. Everybody knows that Obama’s economic “plan” is not working. The second one hammers home the snarky way he dismissed hard work by Americans looking to build their own businesses.

The second ad is my fave – just telling the truth about this SCOAMF, and in his OWN words, hurts him far more than any lie anyone could ever make up about him. I’m one of those business owners in that ad (figuratively), except that I haven’t had to close my doors, just yet.

Sadly though, it’s starting to look pretty bleak, like we might not be able to hold on till Nov, when the real recovery begins. People are scared sh!tless to spend any money right now, banks won’t lend anything, and I’m running out of options to keep operating.

I’ve come to hate this president so much, and not just for what he’s done to ruin our economy, but even more now, for how he so gloatingly rubs salt in the wound.

BoxHead1 on July 26, 2012 at 7:53 PM

KirknBurker, right now the ads are mostly on the internet and running in selected markets, it is summer vacation, try to be patient. Some conservatives are going to have to vote without any ads in their state, but in VA you will have them. No presidential campaign can afford to run commercials until they are properly a candidate, even the funds are not the same.

What you need to do it this. Find and go to your local GOP Victory office, and volunteer, and give a donation to pay for ads in your state if you are able, but if you can’t, your time is worth something to your local campaigns.

Try not to get frustrated and yell at the TV, share your HOPES with others at the campaign office and make new friends. Make the phone calls and see how he is doing in VA, and help with the polling.

You will feel better, and others will listen to you. And make sure you include electing your local conservative offices in your agenda. It all helps.

Fleuries on July 26, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Thing is O is now trying to hold his BASE which is who both of these speeches were aimed at. He can’t triangulate now. His base will have a fit if he does. So he’s left pandering to them–and hacking off the 80% or so of the rest of us.

You don’t have to say he’s un-American or anti-American, just use his own words. He says it better than anyone else ever could.

I say make an ad about “energy costs skyrocketing” and “I believe we should share the wealth” or whatever the exact Joe the Plumber quote was. Just keep playing his words with the voice over, “This is what President Obama really thinks…”

Ooh, the reverb on that “made that happen” is wicked.

This man is so thin skinned i would not be surprised to see him go off like a roman candle in the debates. If Romney really goes after him.

The gift that keeps on giving. Then Obama tries to walk it back and it gives again.

banzaibob on July 26, 2012 at 8:09 PM

He’s telling his voters that there’s nothing wrong to take from others , because “they didn’t build that”.

the_nile on July 26, 2012 at 7:59 PM

Wow. Hadn’t thought of that. A question of ownership. What you created … it’s not yours … it’s everyone’s! Supposing what someone else has is to be shared with you, or even, that it’s not theirs in the first place. That’s where it starts.

“You going to eat those fries?”

“You got any spare change?”

“You using that?”

“You done with that?”

So simultaneously Obama’s various propaganda ministers and sundry witless sheeple deny that he said what he said, admit that he said what he said but claim that he didn’t really mean what he said, and accused anyone who dares to suggest otherwise of maliciously lying about his views, even though Obama’s critics have quoted his own words verbatim, placed them in unmistakable context, and drew from them the same obvious conclusion that any mentally competent person would have to draw.
So as Groucho would say, “Are you going to believe Obama’s propaganda ministers and sundry witless sheeple, or what you see with your own eyes and hear with your own ears?

I haven’t heard any one point out that he seems to be saying there are a lot of smart people out there… who aren’t successful, there are a bunch of hard working people out there…who aren’t successful,

Obama’s idea of America is that you can be smart and work hard, but only the lucky few make it. The American dream and historical reality is that most people who are smart and work hard do make it, they just aren’t Obama voters.

Cody1991 on July 26, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Okay, so he does not meet with ANYONE that we know of until 11:00am and I know its called a “Briefing” but with everything going on the world and in our country but the Briefing only lasts 30 minutes? Yet he has an hour and 40 minutes blocked out for lunch with Joe “Gaffe” Biden?

No wonder we are hurting….

g2825m on July 26, 2012 at 8:13 PM

“Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.”

And that is why, “five days from now we will fundamentally change America”…because we cannot allow this shite to happen any longer…

MaxSplinters on July 26, 2012 at 8:15 PM

Well, now, let’s be fair… Obama probably didn’t write that either…

UnderstandingisPower on July 26, 2012 at 8:16 PM

Obama is an affirmative action composite. He has all the boxes checked. His remarks about “you didn’t make that happen!”, when all is said and done, is a projection of his background onto the lives of all Americans. His life is all about he not making anything happen. Doors opening for him. He simply has to step in. His small, closed, reactionary rigid mind lacks the flexibility and imagination to understand that others don’t share his experience. Big Government is Affirmative Action for all. He didn’t make his college admission possible. He didn’t write his “best seller”. He didn’t buy his house in Chicago without “assistance”. His bellicose wife didn’t get her high flying jobs on her abilities. He didn’t make that Nobel happen either. When someone glides through life using his skin color and implicit threats coupled with menace to arrive at where he is today, is it any wonder that he thinks no one else makes their life happen without some gigantic assist from Big Brother? He’s Living Proof. In Living Color. Someone should ask him: are you talking about yourself? Again?
