Rahm Emanuel: “Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values”

posted at 4:43 pm on July 25, 2012 by Allahpundit

Is there anywhere in America outside of Chicago itself where the term “Chicago values” isn’t pejorative? It’s basically a byword for political corruption and insane levels of gun violence (tough local gun-control measures notwithstanding). If I were the Cathy family, I’d be tempted to make Rahm’s quote the company’s new slogan. “Chick-fil-A: Where the numbers add up and no one gets shot.”

Ald.Proco “Joe” Moreno announced this week that he will block Chick-fil-A’s effort to build its second Chicago store, which would be in the Logan Square neighborhood, following company President Dan Cathy’s remarks last week that he was “guilty as charged” for supporting the biblical definition of marriage as between a man and woman.

“If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don’t want you in the 1st Ward,” Moreno told the Tribune on Tuesday…

“Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values,” the mayor said in a statement when asked about Moreno’s decision. “They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents. This would be a bad investment, since it would be empty.”

Moreno is relying on a rarely violated Chicago tradition known as aldermanic privilege, which dictates that City Council members defer to the opinion of the ward alderman on local issues. Last year Moreno wielded that weapon to block plans for a Wal-Martin his ward, saying he had issues with the property owner and that Wal-Mart was not “a perfect fit for the area.”

I always get crossed up when gay-marriage supporters get indignant with opponents because I agree with them on the merits but can’t quite believe that sanctimony can set in so quickly on an issue that used to see ~70 percent opposition as recently as 15 years ago. A lot of people have changed their minds since then, including me, but it’s precisely because I used to hold the opposite position that I feel humility when tempted to sneer at gay-marriage opponents. Were Rahm and Moreno true blue SSM supporters from day one or did they too once — gasp — have “Chick-fil-A values” on this subject? As I recall, Rahm spent a few years working for a guy who lied his ass off about gay marriage for decades purely for cynical, self-interested political advantage. Were his values copacetic with “Chicago values” before he “evolved”? What’s worse, the Cathy family honestly professing their opposition to gay marriage or the Lightbringer dishonestly professing his opposition because he cared more about getting elected than standing up publicly for something he privately believed? The view from your high horse must be amazing, Rahm.

Per First Amendment expert Eugene Volokh, denying the company a building permit because of its managers’ political or religious views is grossly unconstitutional. The same is, and always was, true of the Ground Zero mosque in NYC; you can hope that they don’t build on the site, but when push comes to shove, they have the right. (The legal calculus would change if Chick-fil-A refused to serve gays, but as far as I know, the business itself has never discriminated.) The silver lining: If Rahm and Moreno are right about “Chicago values” then Chicagoans will simply refuse to patronize the new franchise. Evidently Chick-fil-A’s gambling that there are enough locals who’ll come to eat that it’s worth the expense of trying to set up shop. If Rahm’s serious about what he said, he should be willing to gamble too. Let them build and, after a boycott is inevitably organized, the market will decide who wins. And if the boycott works and Chick-fil-A decides to withdraw from blue states and cities, hey, I’ll live. We’ve still got the colonel in NYC, baby. He was pro-gay-marriage, right?

Update: I really should be above linking to Roseanne Barr’s tweets by now. I should be. And yet.

I thought that accepted for protected classes, like racial background, businesses were free to determine who they did business with?

For example, if I ran a Photo Hut and didn’t want to process nudist film, that would be against the law?

18-1 on July 25, 2012 at 4:58 PM

At the Federal level, the only protected classes are race, gender, religion, and national origin/ethnicity. States can pass laws that add additional protected classes.

California’s Unruh Act is a prime example. It expanded the protected classes to include ancestry, disability, medical condition, marital status, and sexual orientation and applied it to ALL businesses. California courts have held that the protected classes, specifically, listed in the Act are not exclusive and that the Act also prohibits arbitrary discrimination based upon similar characteristics…like political views.

Many years ago, the Unruh Act produced the bizarre result of the ACLU, one of the first groups to push for laws against hate speech, representing a bunch of Neo-Nazis, who had been refused service at a German restaurant. IIRC, they had shown up at the “Alpine-y” (think yodeling) restaurant in Nazi uniforms. When they were asked to remove them, they stood up shouting “Heil Hitler!”

IIRC, the Neo-Nazis won and the restaurant’s insurer refused to pay so the owners’ were on the hook for damages.

It happened in the late 70s or 1980s and, I think, it involved the impeached or recalled Rose Bird. The case happened long before I came to the US and I only read about it in law school decades later, but it sounds like a circus was had by all…except the owners.

When someone as metally sick as Rahm Emmanuel becomes the mayor of your city, you know that pure evil is among you.Illinois is going completely bankrupt because of the corruption that breeds openly within the state. Just a matter of time when the thugs become parasites and suck the life’s blood of those who can take care of themselves. Evil on this magnitude, if left unchecked, will spread like the evil disease it is.

Hilarious. AllahPundit actually buys into those B**sh** numbers concerning gay-marriage support. Never once have Americans voted for gay marriage. That’s right, 32-0. But somehow gay marriage is deemed Bieber’licious and inevitable. I actually think the despicable tactics of Dan Savage and other gay activists over this past year have hurt their cause. Will they get it some day? Probably. But I think a backlash is slowly starting to take hold and it may not be a quickly as some presume.

These lib politician blowhards are, well, blowhards. Nothing Chick-Fil-A is doing could remotely be considered “discrimination”. If they are breaking laws (even dumb laws), then sure, feel free to block their building permit or whatever. But if they’re not, and you’re blocking them just because their executives voiced their religious values, then that’s a 1st Amendment violation, pure & simple. Blowhard.

It must be exhausting to only do business with those businesses that have approved political views. How do Rahm and Moreno know other new business owners have the approved views? Do they question them? Shouldn’t Chicago politicians make sure all new business owners support gay marriage before allowing them to open? And what about existing businesses, maybe Rahm should start looking at them, asking them some questions. And all those people who want to boycott businesses whose owners don’t have the politically correct views, how do they keep track? What if a business owner supports gay marriage, but they use a supplier who doesn’t? And how do you make sure? I’m glad I’m not a liberal, I don’t know how they ever have time to get anything done, other than going around trying to punish people who don’t agree with them.

as my grandmother used to say. Get over yourselves.

Marriage is between a man and a woman. End of story. Don’t
like it, too bad. Go for a civil union status and like it.

BTW, I don’t like your perverted gay pride parades or your parody
of what a female partner should act like. It is offensive to me.

And my opinion is probably offensive to you. Too bad for me.

Now we are on equal footing. We are all offended.

And I don’t know about all the outlets, but the Chick-fil-a in my town isn’t open on Sundays and they frequently hold “family nights”. What a horrible organization.

scalleywag on July 25, 2012 at 6:27 PM

Why do we tolerate the gays intolerance of normal values? This is nuts.

Iblis on July 25, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Gays want people to be tolerant of them, but they sure aren’t very tolerant of people with different views than their own.

Rahm Emanuel: “Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values”

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Moody Bible Institute is in Chicago. Let me know when they agree with you, Rahm.

Seriously, I thought Rahm had better political sense than to say something so silly that is just made for comedy.

INC on July 25, 2012 at 6:30 PM

Rahm,

Per Gallup, 78% of Americans proclaim Jesus Christ as their Savior.

5% of Americans identify themselves as Homosexual.

And, only a small percentage of Homosexual Americans are “activists”.

…I believe they’re outnumbered.

My company planned to have an international convention in Chicago next Spring. I’ve had misgivings about Chicago given the violence and so on especially for foreigners that are not conversant with American big city mores and dangers. However my Sales V.P. convinced my that it would be a good location for a number of rather persuasive reasons. Not enough. We will be going elsewhere. Dallas maybe?

I lived in the metro Chicago area for a year+ and it can be nasty in the spring. Mud, rain, chilly.

A thousand times this.

Nobody goes to Chik-Fil-a anymore…its way too crowded. Heck the one near me requires a traffic cop to direct traffic around it.

DanMan on July 25, 2012 at 5:21 PM

That’s good stuff. Do you live in Virginia Beach? Because we actually do have a Chik-Fil-A that has a traffic cop directing traffic around it.

Spliff Menendez on July 25, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Your loss Chicago. Chick-Fil-A could declare themselves to be a bunch of Hubbard-worshiping Scientologists who were trying to hasten the coming of the apocalypse, and I would still let them build one in my backyard. I need spicy chicken breakfast burritos, need ‘em.

Those of us who like Chick-Fil-A consider that a “feature”, not a “bug.”

“Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values,” the mayor said in a statement when asked about Moreno’s decision. “They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents. This would be a bad investment, since it would be empty.”

Has a Chick-Fil-A ever refused service to a gay couple? Made them use seperate restrooms? Denyed them any priveledge, promotion or price deal given to any other customers? Strangely I have seen no one claiming any of these things that are normally considered discrimination.

tomorrow i will be headed downtown Chicago for my first ever trip to CHICK-FIL-A. and i am a homo-sex-u-al…..dunh dunh dunnnnnnnh…..and i will be getting chicken nuggets, lemonade, and a big fat vanilla milkshake. and you know what? all the other gheys, including rahm, can kiss my ass! i am so, so, so, so, sooooooooooooooooooooo very sick of the INTOLERANT left. i simply cannot imagine what all of you think of their disgusting tactics and having it shoved in your face every five seconds. i would apologize on behalf of “the gheys”, but there are few who, like me, do not put orientation before everything. and i do mean everything.

GhoulAid on July 25, 2012 at 6:58 PM

okay…because of all the noise from the lefties on this I found out that there’s one fairly close…so i tried it the other day

not bad at all. Natch i had a ‘crispy’ type chicken on bun with their honey mustard sauce…not bad at all. Beats other fast food chicken sandwiches (imho)

everyone was very nice…it a little out of the way for me, but i’ll go back.

Thanks lefties, yum, yum

- Roseanne Barr

I realize that Obama’s rise in the polls in 2008 put an end to Roseanne’s dream ticket of Gore-Edwards back then, but why does she continue to harbor such animus towards Obama’s workaday campaign staff? (Or former campaign staff, as the case may be.)
