Romney: Obama “doesn’t have a clue” when it comes to energy

posted at 2:41 pm on July 24, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

A few weeks back, the Obama administration revealed their five-year plan for oil-and-gas permitting — it was lackluster, to say the least, especially when allowing the private sector to produce wealth and productive jobs by tapping our own highly abundant natural resources would be such an unencumbered way to boost economic growth. So, while President Obama can intentionally retard American ingenuity through executive fiat, those “do-nothing” GOPers were having none of it and wrote up some legislation, the “Congressional Replacement of President Obama’s Energy-Restricting and Job-Limiting Offshore Drilling Plan” — the title of which sums up pretty much everything you need to know about it. It’s being debated right now and is likely to pass the House this week, but it isn’t likely to pass through the Senate and the White House let it be known yesterday that President Obama would veto the bill if it did happen to make it to his desk. But always remember, guys: Republicans are the ones who don’t care about creating jobs, or something.

These sorts of political shenanigans, especially within the realm of the energy market, are a huge depressant for our economy, and especially frustrating when we can visibly see parts of the country that are drilling for oil and gas going absolutely gangbusters. What he’s done for and against the energy sector is, in my opinion, one of President Obama’s greatest failings, so I’m hoping the Romney camp will do something major with it and get out in front before the Obama campaign can wheel out the theme again.

“As energy prices have risen and our economy continues to struggle, President Obama insists on hindering efforts to expand domestic production and create American jobs,” said Andrea Saul, spokeswoman for Romney, the presumptive GOP White House nominee.

“Whether blocking job-creating initiatives like the Keystone pipeline or wasting taxpayer money on boondoggles like Solyndra, President Obama doesn’t have a clue when it comes to America’s energy future,” she said. …

The House is debating the bill Tuesday and it’s likely to pass Wednesday. It requires Interior Department oil-and-gas leasing off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, which remain off-limits for at least the next five years under the Obama administration’s plans.

I like that they’re calling out his policies at all, but my greater fear is that President Obama really does have a clue. He knows full well that allowing for more drilling leases would end material hardship for a lot of Americans and help diversify our energy portfolio, but he can’t be bothered to institute a real “all of the above” approach because he wants to have his cake and eat it, too (although, of course, he gets to hide beneath the all-too-convenient guise of ostensible environmental friendliness). The fake “all of the above” approach allows him to placate his greenie base and the enormously powerful environmental lobby while still throwing a few bones to the traditional energy industries, and meanwhile he gets to play a few innings of crony capitalism with his administration’s green-energy “investments.” Oh hey, just look who showed up at a swanky Obama fundraiser in California the other day — a couple of major players involved in Everybody’s Favorite Failed DOE-Backed Solar Company!

President Obama rubbed elbows Monday night with two men at the center of the Solyndra loan scandal at an exclusive fundraiser in California.

Steve Westly, a financier whose money-raising prowess helped to snag him a post on the administration’s energy advisory board, and Matt Rogers, a former Energy Department senior adviser who helped to approve the Solyndra loan, were spotted by reporters at the $35,800-per-person fundraiser for the president’s re-election campaign.

Mr. Westly sent warnings to the president not to attend an event at Solyndra’s headquarters in the Bay area because of shaky finances at the solar energy company, which had received a fast-tracked $535 million federal loan guarantee in 2010 as part of the administration’s economic stimulus program. Mr. Rogers was partly responsible for overseeing stimulus awards at the Energy Department.

They were among about 60 wealthy donors who attended the fundraiser at the swanky home of progressive activist Quinn Delaney and real estate developer Wayne Jordan, a big Obama bundler, in Piedmont, Calif., near Oakland.

here’s the press release from the latest offshore oil sale

Obama Administration Announces 20 Million Acre Oil and Gas Lease Sale Offshore Texas
November Lease Sale to Offer All Unleased Acreage in the Western Gulf of Mexico
WASHINGTON – As part of President Obama’s all-of-the-above energy strategy to expand safe and responsible domestic energy production, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Director Tommy P. Beaudreau today announced that BOEM will offer more than 20 million acres offshore Texas for oil and gas exploration and development in a lease sale that will include all available unleased areas in the Western Gulf of Mexico Planning Area.
Proposed Western Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 229, scheduled to take place in New Orleans on November 28, 2012, will be the first offshore sale under the Administration’s new Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program for 2012-2017 (Five Year Program). Announced last month, the Five Year Program makes more than 75% of recoverable energy resources in our oceans available for exploration and development, consistent with President Obama’s commitment to continue to expand domestic energy production and reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil.

“We are moving forward expeditiously to create jobs by implementing the President’s offshore oil and gas strategy for the next five years – a smart plan that focuses on the areas that contain the overwhelming majority of the energy resources,” said Secretary Salazar. “With comprehensive safety standards in place, this sale will help us to continue to responsibly grow America’s energy economy and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”
Since President Obama took office, domestic oil and gas production has increased each year, with domestic oil production currently at an 8-year high and foreign oil imports now accounting for less than 50 percent of the oil consumed in America – the lowest level since 1995.
The sale will include approximately 3,800 blocks, covering roughly 20.5 million acres, located from nine to 250 miles offshore, in water depths ranging from 16 to more than 10,975 feet (5 to 3,346 meters). BOEM estimates the proposed lease sale could result in the production of 116 to 200 million barrels of oil and 538 to 938 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
“This lease sale will make available millions of acres in the Gulf of Mexico, where there are vast untapped oil and gas resources and industry is working hard to expand oil and gas exploration and development,” said BOEM Director Beaudreau. “This sale is part of the regionally tailored approach that we are taking under the Five Year Program, which is central to the balanced, all-of-the-above strategy we need to meet the nation’s energy needs.”
The decision to move forward with plans for this lease sale follows extensive environmental analysis, public comment, and consideration of the best scientific information available. Earlier this month, BOEM completed a Final Environmental Impact Statement with analysis to support decision-making for this and other Western and Central Gulf of Mexico lease sales scheduled as part of the next Five Year Program.
The proposed terms for the lease sale include a series of measures to protect the environment, including stipulations requiring that operators protect biologically sensitive features. The stipulations for marine mammals and sea turtles will require trained observers to ensure compliance and restrict operations when conditions warrant. The terms also include a range of incentives to encourage diligent development and ensure a fair return to taxpayers – including an increased minimum bid for deepwater tracts, escalating rental rates, and tiered durational terms with relatively short base periods followed by additional time under the same lease if the operator drills a well during the initial period.
This sale will build on other actions taken by the Obama administration to expand safe domestic oil and gas development, including two successful Gulf of Mexico lease sales within the past year. Last month, BOEM offered over 39 million acres as part of Central Gulf of Mexico Sale 216/222, which attracted $1.7 billion in high bids for more than 2.4 million acres. That followed Western Gulf of Mexico lease sale 218 in December 2011, which offered 21 million acres and attracted $324,971,001 in accepted high bids.
The terms and conditions outlined for November’s Sale 229 in the Proposed Notice of Sale are not final. Different terms and conditions may be employed in the Final Notice of Sale which will be published at least 30 days before the sale. All terms and conditions for Western Sale 229 are detailed in the Proposed Notice of Sale information package, which is available at: http://www.boem.gov/Sale-229/. Copies can also be requested from the Gulf of Mexico Region’s Public Information Unit at 1201 Elmwood Park Boulevard, New Orleans, LA 70123, or at 800-200-GULF (4853).
The Notice of Availability of the Proposed Notice of Sale is available today for inspection in the Federal Register at: http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/public-inspection/index.html.

MMS Issues Final Notice of Eastern Gulf Lease Sale 197
The Minerals Management Service announced today the availability of the Final Notice of Lease Sale 197, an offshore oil and gas lease sale in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico, scheduled for March 16, 2005. This lease sale is the third Eastern GOM Outer Continental Shelf lease offering in the last five years. The configuration is the same as MMS Eastern GOM Lease Sales 181 and 189, held in December 2001 and December 2003, respectively.
The lease sale area encompasses the unleased blocks in an area of the Eastern GOM OCS Planning Area. The area is directly south of Alabama. These 124 unleased blocks cover about 714,240 acres and are located from 100 to 196 miles offshore in water depths of 1,600 to more than 3,425 meters. Estimates of undiscovered economically recoverable hydrocarbons in this proposal range from 65 to 85 million barrels of oil and 0.265 to 0.34 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
This final notice, published today in the Federal Register, includes the continuation of recently adopted price thresholds, as follows:
Price thresholds when deep water royalty suspension would end are set at $39.00 per barrel for oil and
$6.50 per million British Thermal units (MMBTU) for gas, expressed in 2004 dollars.
In addition, the following provision has been recently revised for this final notice of sale:
In accordance with regulations at 43 CFR, part 42, subpart C, the lessee shall comply with the
U.S. Department of the Interior’s nonprocurement debarment and suspension requirements and
agrees to communicate this requirement to comply with these regulations to persons with whom the
lessee does business as it relates to this lease by including this term as a condition to enter into their
contracts and other transactions. This agreement will be evidenced by language prepared by MMS
through an Addendum included in each lease resulting from this lease sale.
As a further incentive towards meeting our Nation’s energy needs and increasing domestic natural gas and oil production, a royalty suspension of 12 million barrels of oil equivalent for a lease in water depths of 1,600 meters or deeper has been continued for this sale.

How can environmentalists always stop business?
There are so many progressive causes that seem to have endless income streams and as we all know, endless income streams almost always stem from the government. Everyone else has a limit.
This is what I’d like Romney to ferret out. Any money these groups are getting from government, including ‘attorney fees’ after lawsuits win or lose, need to be stopped.

This prior restraint issue has been visited by the Supreme Court several times in the past decades…and other than student newspapers in high schools…they have held that government “prior restraint” is unconstitutional.

See “NYT v. United State” re: the Pentagon Papers, or “Near v. Minnesota,” and a host of others.

Read Chapter 9 of Mitt Romney’s book No Apology: Believe in America to see that Mitt Romney is far more energy literate than Barack Obama.

Hey Gracie! Guess what.

Michigan: Obama 48, Romney 42

Told ya so!

Yeah, you really told her! Especially since the General Election is still at least 4 months off.

But hey, how well is Gov. Snoozer against either prospective candidate, btw?

BTW, Gary Johnson has lent relevance to the Romney Campaign. From the Washington Times:

I will give you credit though, that you probably wrote that line with true seriousness in your heart…lol

Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson said Monday that he won’t release his tax returns, joining his voice to that of presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney, who has declined to release more than the two most recent years.

TRANSLATION: I’m doing exactly what the other 2 major candidate have done, so i *must* be relevant!…Hell, yeah!

So, what have YOU done to assist Romney lately? Did you even sign up as a GOP Volunteer yet?

Well for one thing, I try to be a little more supportive of him, instead of a Johnny-Come-Bore-Me candidate for a party that hasn’t won a Presidential election…ever.

If not you, who?

DannoJyd on July 24, 2012 at 3:31 PM

Well that’s what I say…Gary WHO?

Gunlock Bill on July 24, 2012 at 3:51 PM

Agreed, but that is how it works in politics. Remember when Cigarman got his second term?

BlaxPac on July 24, 2012 at 3:55 PM

IF you got off of your lazyboy and spent half of the effort you put in trying to attack me [you failed again] in working as a volunteer with the GOP, Romney might have a chance. Instead you decide to spill your hate here in a most irrelevant and liberal manner.

BTW, thank you for making me look just that good. I appreciate your effort.

Are you wishcasting again? :)

Schadenfreude on July 24, 2012 at 3:46 PM

I might be doing exactly that. I certainly don’t enjoy watching Romney flailing like an amateur politician while the 0bamaGanda talking points get drilled into the minds of voters on a daily basis.

Governor Romney has more class than that, but little Bammie won’t be there anyway. He’ll be off sulking in a corner somewhere.

slickwillie2001 on July 24, 2012 at 4:09 PM

If the Republicans actually cared about this, they would start defunding the agencies that police these policies.

But they don’t, or at least the leadership doesn’t.

The House is the most powerful organization in the federal government. Boehner has wasted 2 years doing nothing of substance.

A nice sentiment, but he’ll only be 51 when he is tossed from office in January.

I suspect we’ll have to listen to his incessant whining about how “racist Tea Pary types weren’t smart enough to know” that he’s right about everything from economics to energy for another 25-30 years.

It’ll be worse than Jimmy Carter’s “I would’ve beat Reagan, if John Anderson wouldn’t have interfered” whining…. because Obama has 10X the ego of Carter.

VastRightWingConspirator on July 24, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Imagine for a moment that we listened to the hairshirt environmentalists, the Prophets of Doom, the leftist loons that crowd the halls of congress that in 2009 voted en masse to saddle our country with brutal 83% (yes, again, 83%) cuts in CO2 use. Imagine that the senate didn’t balk at this cap & trade bill, and O smiled widely as he signed it. Imagine also that politics and filibusters make it impossible to reverse this tyrannical act of congress, and so energy prices do rocket upwards as supplies crater.
Electricity is so expensive at $2 kilowatt hour (vs ~ 12 cents today) that many just have to drop power service. Gas is squeezed; prices would go so high I don’t even want to speculate, but, yes, the libs would find that many would only have mass transit as an option, yet the costs of maintaining mass transit would also be high. The price of everything goes through the roof, as the supply — of everything — falls through the floor. Jobs are lost by the millions, pay is reduced for existing jobs… this country doesn’t look anything like it does now, it is a catastrophe, virtually an apocalypse.
Imagine we did all this craziness, and then, lo and behold… the climate still changed! Boy, we sure would be shaking out heads in disbelief.

anotherJoe on July 24, 2012 at 4:24 PM

IF you got off of your lazyboy and spent half of the effort you put in trying to attack me [you failed again] in working as a volunteer with the GOP

Your fetish for lounge furniture aside, I think we’ve already fenced extensively over how much “effort” I (or anyone for that matter) should put into Romney election.

But I am puzzled: You “campiagn” for Romney to attack Obama, even though in mulitple prior posts, you call for the GOP base to “dump Romney” and put in a “true Conservative”…then you usually spout off the name of some 3rd rate Has-Been that gets a lot of laughs, but not votes.

So, are YOU supporting Romney to win, or just some Southwest Phantom?

Romney might have a chance. Instead you decide to spill your hate here in a most irrelevant and liberal manner.

I think quite a few people on here have been saying that for awhile. Romney does have a chance, and that chance is not set in stone.

BTW, I got no hate for Gov Johnszzz; its just, unlike you, I don’t see him being the Saviour of The Republic ™ in any sense of the word.

You on the other hand, seem ready to be his date to the Coronation…

BTW, thank you for making me look just that good. I appreciate your effort.

Can we survive four more years of this Obama character pretending he is Kim Il-song or Kim Chong-il…providing “guidance” to all facets of society (which must be followed or else…) trying to prove to one and all that he is the smartest, brightest, most intelligent man on earth and deserves our unqualified allegiance, filial piety and devotion?

I suspect that if Obama is unleashed, we will be able to say with great joy, we have accomplished what the Dear Leader and Great Leader have and are so proud to be on the same level as the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.

I mean, remember when Obama and his cabinet were teaching us how to cough or sneeze into our elbows? Or being told that you need to keep your tires inflated and check your oil? There are far too many of these gems to even try to catalog.

All hail, O, the beneficent, the almighty, may Allah bless his name.

Should I now post the link to the article describing how a Romney campaign worker described how Mitt will return to his liberal roots like an Etch A Shetch being shaken, or how 0bamacare is not a tax? Maybe the article in which he expresses his support of the Individual Mandate will educate you about him better.

“LACKLUSTER”?!?!?

Do you even KNOW what was IN the thing? Has NO ONE READ IT?!?!?!

PYLE: Energy Department sneaks offshore moratorium past public

Jobs and oil-supply potential are shut down

While the Obama administration was taking a victory lap last week after the 5-4 Supreme Court decision to uphold the president’s signature legislative accomplishment, Obamacare, the Interior Department was using the media black hole to release a much-awaited five-year plan for offshore drilling.

That plan reinstitutes a 30-year moratorium on offshore energy exploration that will keep our most promising resources locked away until long after President Obama begins plans for his presidential library.

Given the timing, it is clear that the self-described “all of the above” energy president didn’t want the American people to discover that he was denying access to nearly 98 percent of America’s vast energy potential on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).

Umm, okay. How did ACORN get into the mix, i can only speculate.

However, considering that I did “campaigned” for every RNC candidate up for election since the 80′s, I think I’m doing alright, thanks for your concern though.

Michigan: Obama 48, Romney 42

Yawn. Sure, if it will help you come to terms that you are campaigning for someone that you told others not to support.

Again, Romney’s failings (and I do have a quibble with him on some issues) at being John Adams reborn aside…how does DannoJyd reconcile this split personality of wanting either Romney to win or Johnszzzz. Which is it today?

Really? I will gladly eat those words, with a lot of BBQ sauce if you can find one post in which i catagorically stated I will NOT support Romney as the candidate.

The closest you might come is me stating that Romney wasn’t my first choice. But i did preface that with that IF Romney is the nominee, i will vote & campaign for him…that, short of Ron Paul or Gary J, i will support the GOP nominee against Presdient Obama.

That makes you a nionentity in my book.

…And what a slim, closed book that must be. Luckliy for me, I’m okay with it.

Why do you liberals spend so much time projecting your own faults?

That being said, I’ve never claimed to be the Sith Lord of the GOP volunteer Corp. YOU, OTOH have tried to castigate all and sundry over your “Mad Azz campaigning skillz”.
