Quotes of the day

posted at 10:53 pm on July 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

The head of the House Democratic Caucus said Tuesday that Congress should “absolutely” ban the sale of assault weapons in the wake of last week’s fatal shooting rampage in Colorado.

Many Democratic leaders have been wary of making a full-throated push for such a ban since House Democrats were swept from the majority in 1994 – a bruising loss some observers have linked to the Democrats’ gun reforms earlier that year.

But Rep. John Larson (Conn.) said Tuesday that Congress shouldn’t shy away from the issue simply because it’s tough politically.

***

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday that he does not plan any action on gun control despite calls to pass an assault weapons ban and other measures…

“You guys, I am not going to be here with each of you debating gun control,” he said. “I’ve told you my feeling on that.”

Reid, who was thought to be in the running for an NRA endorsement during his last election, disagrees with many liberals in his party on gun regulation.

***

Even Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., — who was one of the biggest cheerleaders for the assault weapons ban when it passed the House in 1994 – suggested there is no political will for new gun laws or re-instating the assault weapons ban. Under the weapons ban, which lapsed in 2004. Under the ban, it would have been illegal for James Holmes to purchase the deadliest of the weapons he used: the AR-15 assault rifle…

House Democrats including Reps. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Carolyn McCarthy of New York, both long-time gun control advocates, point to the shooting in Colorado and other mass shootings as proof that the country’s gun laws are insufficient. Monday Blumenauer took to the floor to accuse the National Rifle Association of political bullying. He pointed to the shooting as a renewed opportunity “to deal with an epidemic of gun violence” in the United States.

“The NRA argues that all we need is for existing gun laws to be enforced while they systematically set about to dismantle which laws we have,” Blumenaue said. “I continue to feel that there’s no reason to permit armor-piercing, cop-killer bullets to be sold like Tic-tac’s, that automatic weapons should be available over the counter with 100-bullet magazines like killer in Colorado had, that facilitate such sprees.”

***

[G]un control advocates tell another story as well. The president has shied away from the gun debate, they said, out of political expedience. The Obama who spoke at that church rally isn’t the same politician who chose soft-touch responses to the mass shootings in Tucson, Ariz., and, most recently, in Aurora, Colo.

“There is no question he’s softened on the issue,” said Ed Rendell, the former Pennsylvania governor who focused on the unwillingness of Democrats to take on the gun lobby in his new book, “A Nation of Wusses.” “But in fairness to the president, you don’t see many other Democrats rushing to the floor saying we need to have legislation.”…

“He has been supportive of national policy until he took office,” said Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “I don’t know how much it is the influence of the gun lobby directly, as it is the kind of political calculus. He had an agenda and this was not at the top of his agenda. He needed to create coalitions of support for things like health care and he didn’t want to risk fragmenting that support in any way.”

But as national incidents of gun violence flared with no major responses, groans have grown louder.

***

On his visit to Aurora, Barack Obama spoke a few half-hearted words—he might have wished he could venture more—on the topic. His rival, Mitt Romney, continued simply to pander to the rich coffers of the National Rifle Association. In Washington, you can be assured that hardly anyone will do more, and not simply because members of Congress “don’t have the spine to act,” the verdict of Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, whose husband was murdered and son was wounded in a gun attack on a commuter train 17 years ago. The stark reality is that the half-century battle for gun control has been lost politically—again, and again, now perhaps permanently. And that outcome seems impervious to any new outrage perpetrated in the increasingly grim randomness of America as a recurring, movable shooting gallery…

Aboard Air Force One, on a journey to console the victims and their families in Colorado, Obama’s press secretary said the president’s focus was on enforcing “existing law.” And you can’t expect him to launch a futile demand for tougher gun laws that would never pass the House or Senate. Nor should he pursue a course of faux courage that would represent a heedless disregard for everything else at stake in 2012—and that would sacrifice his chances in swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, thereby shattering the hope for a progressive presidency empowering the forces of reaction to impose their will across the board.

The psychic satisfaction of being pure on gun control is not worth losing the election—and letting Romney further pack a Supreme Court that has already ruled five to four that the Constitution confers an individual right to own firearms despite state and local gun laws. If this happened, things would only get worse.

***

These days, people are trying to use the Aurora killings as a pretext to criticize America’s gun culture or to call for stricter gun control laws. (This doesn’t happen after European or Asian spree killings.) Personally, I’ve supported tighter gun control laws. But it’s not clear that those laws improve public safety. Researchers reviewing the gun control literature for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for example, were unable to show the laws are effective.

And gun control laws are probably even less germane in these cases. Rampage killers tend to be meticulous planners. If they can’t find an easy way to get a new gun, they’ll surely find a way to get one of the 200 million guns that already exist in this country. Or they’ll use a bomb or find another way.

Looking at guns, looking at video games — that’s starting from the wrong perspective. People who commit spree killings are usually suffering from severe mental disorders. The response, and the way to prevent future episodes, has to start with psychiatry, too.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jul/23/dispelling-gun-myths

The left applies the scary term “assault weapons” to play on emotional responses, but it isn’t working anymore. More Americans oppose banning so-called “assault rifles” (53 percent) than favor it (43 percent), according to a Gallup poll from October 2011. The poll also showed the lowest level of support for new gun laws in history.

In other words, the public has realized those laws don’t work. Gun-free zones, like the Aurora movie theater, leave criminals armed and unchallenged

Clearly, the deterrence value of guns, in deterring assaults and home invasions and robberies, is held by millions of citizens. This benefit dwarfs the cost of occasional nut cases gone wild.

Most importantly, this is Romney’s opportunity to STAND UP FOR A CONSERVATIVE CAUSE. He’s seen as a gun grabber, especially of “assault weapons.” This would be unexpected, and would garner him huge kudos in terms of fighting the misperception that he is a wavering coreless opportunist. Stand up and show that you actually have some strong conservative principles. This would get needed media play also.

Why didn’t we stop muslims getting flight training in USA ?
Why didn’t we stop muslims getting visas to USA?
So why do we need to regulate guns anymore than we already do , after Aurora ?

burrata on July 24, 2012 at 11:26 PM

I think the reason that Reid and other prominent Democrats are suppressing the argument from their own party regarding gun control legislation, even moving to silence any debate on the subject, is that if its brought up openly, Obama will have to face Republicans demands for information regarding the Department of Justice and “Operation Fast and Furious”, in which assault weapons were sold through straw buyers to cartel members under orders of the Department of Justice, through the auspices of ‘gun walking’ sending weapons which could not be tracked across the US/Mexico border, which was directly responsible for the death of some 300 Mexican nationals and at least one, if not two, federal agents.

It is, after all, a general election year. Reid and Team Obama are hoping that low information voters remain unaware of the particulars of the ‘Fast and Furious’ scandal lest those members of the electorate otherwise inclined to vote for Obama and other Democrats seeking election suddenly find that particular choice unpalatable and untenable.

Three young men used their bodies as shields to protect women with them at the theater.

Is there anyone who would suggest those three men would not have defended themselves and everyone else more effectively if they had a concealed carry weapon with them?

Aurora is one of a small number of Colorado communities fighting the governor’s ruling that state law takes precedence over local laws that ban the carrying of concealed weapons under license by the state of Colorado.

Aurora self selected as the location for this outrage. Hopefully, some of the victims and the deceased’s families will sue Aurora’s local government for their part in this crime.

Bill O’Reilly is an inaccurate idiot.

Bmore on July 24, 2012 at 11:01 PM

He is a pompous blowhard. He is also grossly ignorant and/or misinformed on the law when it comes to firearms. Fully-automatic weapons were banned in the National Firearms Act of 1934, which was supported by the NRA. Further, the National Firearms Act of 1968 went back and fixed some of the 1934 Act that had been overturned by the Supreme Court (Haynes was the most serious case) and banned or closely-regulated weapons like machine guns, short-barrel shotguns, poison gas, tear gas, etc.

It is a COMPLETE FALLACY that a person can just walk into a gun shop and purchase an automatic weapon or be in legal possession of a nuclear bomb, but strawmen make good incendiary devices, which are great at both inflaming passions and diverting attention from the real goals of the gun control crowd.

He is further incorrect relative to his assertions about background cheques, notifications, possession, and the very existence of Federal laws on the books. For example, Section 922(g) of the Gun Control Act prohibits certain persons from shipping or transporting any firearm in interstate or foreign commerce, or receiving any firearm which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce, or possessing any firearm in or affecting commerce.

Who Is Ineligible to Buy Handguns?

When a licenced federal handgun dealer runs a background cheque on a potential handgun buyer, the NICS system returns information on individuals who:

* Dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.

* Are unlawful users of or addicted to a controlled substance.

* Have been adjudicated as a mental defective or been committed to a mental institution.

* Are illegal or unlawful aliens.

* Have renounced their U.S. citizenship

The above are prohibited from purchasing, possessing, transferring, delivering, or distributing firearms.

It wasn’t only that,..he couldn’t even get the simple details right. He kept referring to the 60,000 rounds of ammo this guy had purchased. It was 6000.

If I had to guess what O’Reilly was talking about it, it is semi-automatic. He would be just like the folks from the original “assault” weapon ban and go through a catalog and ban the “scary” looking guns.

Cindy Munford on July 24, 2012 at 11:32 PM

Guess you could say a double-action revolver is semi-automatic as it fires every time you pull the trigger.

Maybe he’s thinking that since all they had in the 1770′s were muzzle-loading flintlocks then the Second Amendment refers to single-shot weapons since it was written back then?

Interesting to note that the Continental Army/militia had equipment on a par with that of the British Army, and the Confederate Army the same as that of the Union Army. Today’s citizens would be horribly mismatched against the modern military, so from an evil government controlling everything perspective, I don’t see what they have to worry about?

So therefore it must simply be that Liberals just don’t like guns, and not coincidentally, those that tend to like guns.

Democrat Caucus said Tuesday that Congress should “absolutely” ban the sale of assault weapons in the wake of last week’s fatal shooting rampage in Colorado.

So the StuG tank I bought last month was a waste of money on my part?

Cindy Munford on July 24, 2012 at 11:32 PM

The idiot even brought up bazookas. He obviously doesn’t know that we already ban citizens from owning heavy weapons like that. BOR often speaks about the law, as if he is an expert. I can’t count the number of times that he has been wrong. Normally, I can cite the statute or case off the top of my head that disproves his claims. He constantly argues with Megyn Kelly, Kimberly Guilfoyle and Liz Weihl and claims that they are all wrong.

Resist We Much on July 24, 2012 at 11:42 PM

David Brooks: Personally, I’ve supported tighter gun control laws. But it’s not clear that those laws improve public safety. Researchers reviewing the gun control literature for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for example, were unable to show the laws are effective.

So why, Brooks, do you support tighter gun control? If you didn’t support it, no more Manhattan cocktail parties? No more meetings in Pinch’s office and his pats on the head for your being a “reasonable conservative”? No more summers in the Hamptons or on Martha’s V? No more pants-crease ogling?

What is it, Brooks, that would allow you to whore yourself out so publicly?

So, in the words of Billy Batts’, in Goodfellas, “Now go home and get your f*ckin’ shinebox.”

With bayonet lugs, full stocks, and were black in color; used to assault the fortifications at places like Bunker Hill. In other words, “assault weapons”.

Bmore on July 24, 2012 at 11:46 PM

I haven’t read every comment in this thread, but can anyone get through to the geniuses in the media that even during the so called AWB you could still buy AR 15s? It couldn’t have a collapsible stock, a magazine that held more than 10 rounds, or a bayonet lug because of all the drive by bayonetings.
Also, you could still buy magazines that could hold more than 10 rounds as long as they were made before ’94.
During the so called AWB the gun grabbers said gun manufacturers were exploiting loopholes in the law when they were actually complying with the law.

BOR can be spectacularly right-on at times, and spectacularly wrong other times. There’s no thread between the two though, no ideology or principle that could ever possibly explain his positions. He’s no conservative, or Republican, yet he’s not a liberal or libertarian either. He is more a populist, but that’s not political, it’s more a dodge.

The only conclusion I can come to is that he’s just mind-numbingly stupid. Now there are a lot of stupid people in our country, but BOR is different because he is absolutely convinced that he is brilliant.
