New RNC ad: “These aren’t gaffes”

posted at 1:21 pm on July 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

What is the RNC trying to do — put the OOTD feature out of business?  Well, yes, but only by ending Barack Obama’s tenure in the White House at one term.  Working from the “You didn’t build that” quote, the RNC has a new television ad out today that rebuts the media portrayal of Obama’s remark as a gaffe — or at least, if it is a gaffe, it’s a Kinsleyan gaffe that accidentally revealed a truth Obama wants to remain hidden.  The truth is that even in the context Obama claims, this remark shows his hostility to small businesses, and the lack of interest Obama has taken in boosting the job-creation engine within that community:

Meanwhile, Power Line points to this helpful mash-up of Obama and Elizabeth Warren that explains where Obama got his “context”:

Give Obama credit for delivering this better than Warren.  Where Warren’s delivery demonstrates anger and contempt for those who claim credit for their own success, Obama tries a somewhat softer approach of humor and disdain.  Both, however, perfectly communicate the same idea: small businesses are parasites that only succeed through the beneficence of government, and therefore government has the right to seize whatever capital it wants from that success.

How do small business owners see Obama and his policies?  Longtime syndicated editorial cartoonist Mike Shelton — whose work I used to enjoy daily at the Orange County Register back in the day — has joined the Franklin Center’s Watchdog.org website.  Mike is an avid Hot Air reader and occasional commenter (as “Cartooner,” natch).  In this week’s entry, Shelton accurately demonstrates the contribution of Obama’s policies to the success of small businesses over the last three-plus years:

We’ll see plenty more from Mike in the weeks and months ahead, so be sure to keep checking in at Watchdog.org.

Update: From the comments, don’t miss Zombie’s lengthy take-down of Obama and Warren.

Schadenfreude on July 24, 2012 at 1:31 PM

Good ad, except, and I’m not nitpicking… they should try to make it more disturbing. It needs to really really bite, and get people shaking their heads. Get people disturbed… think of The Exorcist for inspiration.

Also, the text, in combo with the narration, isn’t big or bold or distinct enough. Imagine people watching it that are busy with other things, but I am specifically glued to it and trying to figure out what is being said or written, and it’s a little hard, just a little, to discern. But it shouldn’t be hard at all. Error on the side of big and bold, and narration that makes it all clear. This is my quick view impression.

they should put the quote in context because I think the entire quote is even worse than that clip. Also show a graph with the percentage of the tax burden small businesses actually pay. they could also add the “at some point youve made enough money” and “spread the wealth around quotes”. I would like to see a series of ads with different smal business owners in them explaining how the mess we’re in is affecting them. That could include farmers. The raising of the inheritance tax to 55% after the first million will also devastate small businesses and familly owned farms.

From the other thread, with Ramirez:

This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating breakfast of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration.

At the appropriate time as regulated by the US Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory. I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to send via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school.

After work, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to a house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshal’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all it’s valuables thanks to the local police department.

I then log on to the internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on freerepublic.com and Fox News forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can’t do anything right.

Obama has embarked on a calculated campaign to damage this nation in as many ways possible, on the largest scale possible.

I don’t make this statement without consideration. Obama has an ivy league education. He’s been touted by the left as ‘the smartest president, ever.’

So, since his election he has undermined every federal agency that he could by making appointments of unqualified people to head them. This has resulted in gross inefficiency in those agencies. This inefficiency is compounded by a series of memos and Executive Orders from this president that interfered with or altered the core mission of these agencies, essentially rendering them ineffective, as with the Department of Homeland Security and ICE on the uniform and consistent enforcement of federal immigration law and securing the nations borders, or so grossly over zealous, as with the Department of Energy, that they have become a regulatory mechanism that is onerous to the economy and the freedoms of this nations citizenry.

He immediately embarked on an ‘apology tour’ around the globe, denying this nation’s exceptionalism, and seeking to make it ‘just one nation among many’.

He has turned his back on our allies, and undermined our standing and our credibility with the rest of the global community.

He has sought to choke off our energy supply, DURING A MAJOR RECESSION, thus making it nearly impossible for this nation to remain competitive.

He has pledged to ‘redistribute’ this nations wealth and has resorted to a campaign, through the government agencies within his administration, to seek to do so through ‘social justice’, for instance, in pressuring mortgage lenders to continue to use the same criteria for issuing loans to minorities that led up to, and was largely responsible for, the housing bubble, by gutting welfare reform and beefing up the 77 different federal welfare programs, by encouraging the USDA to get as many Americans as possible on food stamps, whether they thought they needed them or not, and by leaving our borders wide open and allowing 11-20 million illegal aliens to take what they will from this nation, including an estimated 7 million full time jobs when 23 million American citizens are unemployed or acutely underemployed. He has sent this nations money abroad through the IMF, the World Bank, the UN, and every other auspice that he could find including foreign aid in record amounts.

Obama and the Democrat in congress have failed to produce a viable budget in over 1100 days, when they are mandated to produce one every year. He has run this nation into debt faster and deeper than all of the presidents before him. In that he has truly excelled.
Worse, he has sought to make this nation answerable to the UN, an organization largely populated with dictator, civil and human rights offenders, and those nations which actively seek to see us fall form our preeminent position in the world.

He has encouraged this nation to become a vast array of special interest splinter groups, pitted one against the other, rather than one cohesive people. He has shamelessly fed the differences between race, gender, age, sexuality, and ethnicity and even educational level, in a cynical attempt to patch together a base to reelect him rather than encourage unity and true equality for all Americans.

He has caused Obamacare to be passed into law, a tax so monumental that it is the single largest tax increase every levied upon the American people and MOST of the revenue it will extract will come out of the pocket of the middle class.

So, yes, I agree that these were not ‘gaffes’, but rather Obama being candid.

He wasn’t just being candid…Obama has lived in his entire life inside a liberal bubble.

He thinks most of America thinks like he does.

Now Independents may start to pay closer attention to what those pesky conservatives have been griping about…at least on economic issues.

Warren is one angry lady.

J.H. on July 24, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Uh, Ms. Warren, the marauding bands are being hired as you speak by the IRS. Rush was right on when he said Prezzy You Didn’t Build Dat said it’s not yours cuz you didn’t build it. He believes all profit belongs to the govt. He wasn’t talkin’ ’bout the roads and bridges, either.

Kissmygrits on July 24, 2012 at 4:44 PM

One other fallacy in these speeches. If you live in a modern subdivision and are the original homeowner on a new home, most likely you paid for those roads, bridges, and infrastructure in your subdivision. Municipalities force developers to pay for all of the streets, utilities, and other infrastructure. Guess what that really means? Yep, those costs are built into the home prices.

In many cases, the same thing is true of businesses in industrial areas being assessed for road and bridge improvements, or again, the developer building that infrastructure and passing on the cost in the building prices.
