Aurora victim’s brother to MSNBC host: Why, no, I don’t want to talk about gun control

posted at 6:42 pm on July 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Greg Hengler, we’re late to this but it’s still a must-post, simply because it’s one of the great narrative derailments you’ll ever see on cable. If ever there was a dynamic primed for a gun control cri de coeur, it’s DNC TV nudging a relative of one of the shooting victims while he’s still grieving. No one would have faulted him for responding emotionally; instead, he came back at them with this. His composure and insistence on sticking to principle under the circumstances are remarkable.

HuffPo is wondering when/whether The One might follow his M.O. on gay marriage and “evolve” on gun control by re-embracing a position he held in the mid-90s. In a sense, that’d be in keeping with his overall campaign strategy: He’s given up on white working-class voters, more or less, and is playing chiefly to his liberal base now, so why not throw them some invigorating red meat by calling for a new assault-weapons ban or whatever? The difference between this and SSM, I think, is that when he “evolved” on gay marriage, he was falling into line with virtually the entirety of his party. If he “evolved” now on gun control, by contrast, he’d be cross-wise with all sorts of purple-state Dems, and then the storyline would quickly shift from “Obama pushes new gun regulations” to “Democrats abandoning WH on new gun push.” Even Chuck Schumer, who once chaired the DSCC, is going around telling the media that new gun-control measures are a nonstarter. O cares about Michigan and Pennsylvania and Virginia, not MSNBC, and he knows that liberals will forgive him for this in the name of victory (just as they would have if he had kept up his embarrassing SSM charade). Gun control, like his trip to Israel, is something that can wait for his second term, if only as a rhetorical bludgeon against a Republican Congress.

Exit question: Why have gun sales soared in Colorado over the last few days? It’s tempting to think that people are scrambling to protect themselves from the James Holmeses of the world, but I think Mark Hemingway’s explanation is far more likely.

Update: You don’t say.

If you think gun sales are exploding right now, watch what they’ll do on 11/7 if Barry is reelected.

Also, one law that’s about to be ignored en masse in Colorado (and other places): Gun-free zones.

I think it is really sad that this guy had to endure that shameless push for gun control by a partisan hack. It just goes to show you these anchors pretend to care about us “little people”, but they don’t. Not at all. It may just be part of the job to be desensitized by it, but that doesn’t give an excuse for using someone’s death as a tool to push your own beliefs. For all the flack that is hurled at the church for hypocrisy and such, I can’t understand why “journalism” is held in such high esteem today.

Why have gun sales soared in Colorado over the last few days? It’s tempting to think that people are scrambling to protect themselves from the James Holmeses of the world, but I think Mark Hemingway’s explanation is far more likely.

Well, it’s unlikely to happen at the Colorado level, so that leaves the Federal level. Why would Coloradans be the only ones concerned about that?

As much as I share Coloradans emotions about the shootings, I’m 1,000 miles worth of “it could never happen here” away, while they are right next door, if you will.

Hemingway’s point, while true, doesn’t explain it. If he made that point as an explanation for the Colorado guns sales, then he’s wrong.

More likely, it is that the people remember the new gun control laws that came in after Columbine and they’re stocking up before even tighter restrictions might follow this one. They know that their new purchases would be grandfathered in and thus not affected by any new laws placed on the books.

Felons aren’t allowed to possess guns in most, if not all, states.

Section 922(g) of the Gun Control Act prohibits certain persons from shipping or transporting any firearm in interstate or foreign commerce, or receiving any firearm which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce, or possessing any firearm in or affecting commerce.

Who Is Ineligible to Buy Handguns

When a licensed federal handgun dealer runs a background cheque on a potential handgun buyer, the NICS system returns information on individuals who:

* Dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.

* Are unlawful users of or addicted to a controlled substance.

* Have been adjudicated as a mental defective or been committed to a mental institution.

* Are illegal or unlawful aliens.

Resist We Much on July 24, 2012 at 8:02 PM

It’s funny how law abiding people abide the law. We are more worried about the embarrassment of being thrown out of a movie theater than we are about being gunned down or blown up. Having a “No weapons” sign didn’t stop this guy, but it stops everyone who would never dream of doing what this guy did.

Actually, I spoke with 3 Colo. CCW owners, one being my son, and all 3 carry their weaps into Colo theatres…their mindset–there is a difference between legally prohibited and business prohibited…

Matthews Panel Wonders How Colorado Shooting Will Impact The Presidential Race

Let’s face it, if your job involves talking about politics, and the biggest news story you have to talk about is a nonpolitical one, you’re probably going to try and find a way to give said event some political context. But you’re going to make a lot of people uncomfortable when you take a horrible shooting incident and ask what impact it will have on the presidential race. Which is pretty much what everyone on The Chris Matthews Show did today for about two minutes, with Chuck Todd filling in for Chris Matthews.

RELATED: President Obama Addresses Tragic Aurora Movie Theater Shooting

Todd observed that last week was mostly a vicious one for politics, and then after news broke of the shooting, the race became much less toxic. Dan Rather predicted it would not last long, saying that the campaign rhetoric has become rather “bland and irrelevant.” CNN’s Gloria Borger said that Americans look to the president as a “national pastor” in times of crisis.

Todd asked if the negative ads were in such bad taste that the campaigns pulled them down after the tragic news broke, why are they up to begin with? Kathleen Parker said the campaigns would be well-advised to rethink the negativity in the weeks and months to come. Todd then speculated on what this whole tragedy means for the election, asking “Can an event like this shake the campaigns… out of the small and petty?” David Ignatius threw cold water on the idea, given how little other tragedies have affected national politics.

And then, as if to answer his own question, Todd immediately switched into full campaign discussion mode, highlighting the “small and petty” fights that have already gone on in the campaign. Rather predicted that Romney’s refusal to release more tax returns will hurt his campaign, while Borger said that the Obama campaign’s strategy boils down to making Romney out to be a “secret, outsourcing rich guy who doesn’t understand your problems.”

Parker brought up the “felon” charge that dominated the news cycle for a few days, and said that several independent fact-checkers have cleared Romney from some of the Obama campaign’s attacks. Todd brought up the hypothetical couple “Joe and Jane Smith from Toledo, Ohio” and wondered what people like them want the media to ask Romney about his taxes. Rather said the American people celebrate success, so long as it is gotten fairly.

Luckily, having a dick or being a dick isn’t a prerequisite for owning firearms. Now excuse me while I take my brand new AR-Five Seven out to the range.

Wendya on July 24, 2012 at 8:14 PM

Why does anyone need semi automatic weapons? Or body armor for that matter? Banning both just seems like common sense.

Ric on July 24, 2012 at 6:55 PM

.
The Second Amendment to the US Constitution is not about the hobby/recreational/sporting uses of firearms.
It is about the common American citizen being empowered with the capability to function as their OWN first-line of defense against:

1) GOVERNMENTAL TYRANNY

2) Criminals

3) Dangerous (non-human) animals
.
Oh, did I forget to mention GOVERNMENTAL TYRANNY ?

Hell we should sell them to know drug dealers too.

Uppereastside on July 24, 2012 at 6:57 PM

President O’Sandtrap and his merry band of Department o’ Justice weapons redistributors have that covered already.

Well, they’re Mexican, but a drug gang is a drug gang, huh?

Brother:

Here’s the thing: we could try to politicize this and make some kind of polarizing debate and make this a tenet of the election…
