Ugh: NBC trying to manufacture a “you didn’t build that” moment for Mitt Romney

posted at 4:01 pm on July 23, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Of course. NBC (or, the online news source formerly known as MSNBC) is trying to equate President Obama’s recently infamous “you didn’t build that” remark about Americans and their businesses with Mitt Romney’s “you didn’t get here on your own” remark about the Olympic athletes during the 2008 opening ceremonies. While President Obama was making the argument that the wealthy should pay even more in taxes because they need to stop thinking they’re “just so smart” or that they “worked harder than everyone else” and instead realize they could never have accomplished anything without some degree of dependency on government, Mitt Romney reminded the athletes to be grateful for the parents and coaches who loved and supported them — and NBC tries to posit that they’re both merely making an “it takes a village” argument. It’s cute, really.

But in 2002, during his speech at the Opening Ceremonies at the Winter Olympics — the games in which Romney was lauded for turning around the management — Romney made a similar argument about Olympians.

“Tonight we cheer the Olympians, who only yesterday were children themselves,” Romney said. “As we watch them over the next 16 days, we affirm that our aspirations, and those of our children and grandchildren, can become reality. We salute you Olympians – both because you dreamed and because you paid the price to make your dreams real. You guys pushed yourself, drove yourself, sacrificed, trained and competed time and again at winning and losing.” …

“You Olympians, however, know you didn’t get here solely on your own power,” said Romney, who on Friday will attend the Opening Ceremonies of this year’s Summer Olympics. “For most of you, loving parents, sisters or brothers, encouraged your hopes, coaches guided, communities built venues in order to organize competitions. All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them. We’ve already cheered the Olympians, let’s also cheer the parents, coaches, and communities. All right! [pumps fist].”

Forgive me, but I fail to see the ostensible resemblance.

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.  (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Having appreciation for the loved ones in your life who’ve helped you to achieve through family and community feels somewhat different than groveling to the federal government for so magnanimously collecting the taxes in order to enforce the stable rule of law that ensures that we can reliably do business with one another. The government does not perform the same functions as my family, thank you very much — nor should it.

Just add up what all those iceskating outfits and lessons cost the family for Suzie, while her brothers ate hamburger and cold cereal for breakfast because someone had to get the athlete to the rink at zero-dark-thirty. THAT’S what Mitt’s talking about.

Schadenfreude on July 23, 2012 at 4:07 PM

The economists interviewed by the AP point to low-wage jobs, but that’s not the real problem; it’s a lack of any jobs:

Poverty is closely tied to joblessness. While the unemployment rate improved from 9.6 percent in 2010 to 8.9 percent in 2011, the employment-population ratio remained largely unchanged, meaning many discouraged workers simply stopped looking for work. Food stamp rolls, another indicator of poverty, also grew.

During this three-year recovery, we have not added enough jobs to keep pace with population growth. We add somewhere between 125,000 to 150,000 working-age adults on average each month, but we have only added 65,200 jobs on average each month since June 2009, the start of the recovery. That means that we have gone backwards in terms of population growth by more than 2.2 million jobs that we needed just to keep pace. Thanks to the depressed job market, wages remain low because of the huge numbers of people who seek work, and the huge numbers of people who have given up out of despair.
Until this recovery, the aggregation of solid earnings after a recovery preceded expansion and job growth. In this recovery, the massive amount of regulation — and especially the ambiguities of regulation in ObamaCare and Dodd-Frank — along with tax-policy signals has forced companies to shield earnings and capital rather than invest in expansion. Until those policies change, our economy won’t expand, won’t add new jobs at a rate needed to keep up with a growing population (which should produce growing demand that businesses would love to be able to meet), and poverty will increase rather than decrease.
Are we heading into another recession? For more and more Americans, the last one never ended.

Over 10 Million jobs are missing from the Obama economy. Yes, over 10 Million.

Civilian noninstitutional population age 16 years and over, June 2012: 243,155,000

If we currently had the same Employment-population ration that was the average over all 96 months of the George W. Bush Presidency (62.7%), with our current population there would be 152,458,000 people employed.

62.7% * 243,155,000 = 152,458,000

How many people actually were employed in June 2012? 142,415,000

How many jobs are missing from the Obama economy?

152,458,000
-
142,415,000
===========
_10,043,000 jobs

Over 10 Million jobs!!!

The last time that Republicans controlled the House, Senate, and Presidency, in 2006, there were 144,427,000 people employed.

Now, after over five and a half years of majority Democrat control, there are TWO MILLION LESS people employed (142,415,000) even as the Civilian noninstitutional population age 16 years and over has grown by 14.34 million people, from 228,815,000 to 243,155,000.

The employable population has grown by over 14 million, and not only do we not have more people employed now than in 2006, we have TWO MILLION FEWER PEOPLE EMPLOYED now than in 2006.

And again, if we had the average George W. Bush era Employment-population ratio right now, over 10 MILLION MORE PEOPLE WOULD BE EMPLOYED!

“… both because you dreamed and because you paid the price to make your dreams real.”

That’s the difference from Obama’s belief that each successful American owes the government the offering of earth and water.

Dusty on July 23, 2012 at 4:12 PM

One is “Congratulations at what you accomplished and please remember those who helped you.” The other is “Your victories are nothing. Government owns you.” Not even close, NBC. Romney was never “struck” incredulous by those who dare to think that their successes were their own; Obama has never “saluted” a single hardworking businessman.

Nothing but desperation here. I figured that the “you didn’t build that” gaffe was worth a point or two in the overall vote, but it’s clear that this is much more than that.

By more than 2-1, 63%-29%, those surveyed say Romney’s background in business, including his tenure at the private equity firm Bain Capital, would cause him to make good decisions, not bad ones, in dealing with the nation’s economic problems over the next four years.

The Democratic attacks on Romney seem to have had limited effect on voters’ assessments of him. In February, 53% said the former Massachusetts governor had the personality and leadership qualities a president should have; now 54% do. Then, 42% said they agreed with Romney on the issues that mattered most to them; now 45% do.

Ok, so according to NBC the two speeches amount to the same thing. With that in mind, I went back and listened to Obama’s speech over and over and created the identical speech as it might have been delivered had Obama been standing where Romney was. This is how it turned out:

If you won a medal, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by athletes who think ‘it must be because I was so focused’. There are a lot of focused people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you summin’ – there are a whole bunch of hard workin’ people out there. [applause]. Obama is an affirmative action composite. He has all the boxes checked. His remarks about “you didn’t make that happen!”, when all is said and done, is a projection of his background onto the lives of all Americans. His life is all about he not making anything happen. Doors opening for him. He simply has to step in. His small, closed, reactionary rigid mind lacks the flexibility and imagination to understand that others don’t share his experience. Big Government is Affirmative Action for all. He didn’t make his college admission possible. He didn’t write his “best seller”. He didn’t buy his house in Chicago without “assistance”. His bellicose wife didn’t get her high flying jobs on her abilities. He didn’t make that Nobel happen either. When someone glides through life using his skin color and implicit threats coupled with menace to arrive at where he is today, is it any wonder that he thinks no one else makes their life happen without some gigantic assist from Big Brother? He’s Living Proof. In Living Color. Someone should ask him: are you talking about yourself? Again?

So, Romney urges his audience of Olympians, who dreamed and paid the price to achieve that dream, to repay the help they got along the way with voluntary cheers and Obama urges his audience of supporters to get him re-elected so he can continue to push for the confiscation of more money from successful Americans, who ostensibily didn’t get there on their own and got government help, by force of law.

And that’s the same according to NBC? Okay.

Mitt Romney ought say he’ll push for an additional IRS form to be filled out by those making over $250k called the HHH-123 form.

Check one if you made at least $250k, two if over $500k and three if over $1M (see line 37) of 1040:

[ } Hip, Hip, Hooray, for government!

One is left to ponder what exactly NBC‘s function will be once they are no longer paid to Nuzzle Barry’s Culo.

They have been trying desperately to recast Obama’s comments into just lecturing us Tea Party/Republican rubes that there needs to be a robust infrastructure, a lack of corruption and a lot of supportive people for a person’s great talent and hard work to translate into success. Well, yes. DUH! If conservatives didn’t believe such things didn’t matter, we wouldn’t be fighting for wise policies in government.

Yes, of course there needs to be things like roads and electric power, law enforcement and emergency services. Yes you need to hire great employees. The thing is, liberals are the only ones who believe that liberals are the only ones who believe this. The thing is, everyone has good roads. Most everyone has had good teachers. Everyone can find good employees. It’s the smart ones and the hard workers who can take all those things and rise to the top.

Who’s listening? That is the real question. Any who think it isn’t the same old 21st Century 49/49 world is kidding themselves.

Once President, Obama should have tried to transform himself into America’s image. It would have been better for America, for the world, and probably even for him, and it wouldn’t have taken any more effort. Of course, such action would be impossible for a narcissist who thinks the world should be transformed to revolve around him. The man is very mentally off to say the least.

VorDaj on July 23, 2012 at 4:35 PM

Wait a minute…I thought THIS is what He said needed fundamental changing and transformation:

“Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.”

Kenz on July 23, 2012 at 4:35 PM

Exactly why do you pay attention to what these left wing lunatics at NBC or any other media say? These fools are delusional and desperate.

How many U.S. Olympic athletes had financial support from the Government?

Besides, in 2002, Romney was addressing not only American Olympic athletes, but Olympic athletes of all nationalities, some of whom may have received financial support from their governments, but ALL of whom received moral support from their coaches and trainers.

The Obama campaign–from setting up straw men to grasping at straws!

Steve Z on July 23, 2012 at 4:36 PM

Wow, so their internal polls are really tanking because Barackabama said what he meant and meant what he said. NBC must get the word out that Barackabama isn’t so bad if Romney said it, too!!!

SouthernGent on July 23, 2012 at 4:36 PM

Wow. They’re coming apart at the seams here.

I suppose while they’re at it they can demagogue anyone who has ever given a High School commencement speech in any corner of our Nation that extends gratitude to the parents who mentored their children.

Obama: One big giant ball of fail.

Key West Reader on July 23, 2012 at 4:37 PM

Also, Obama’s tone was very negative when he made that statement. Romney’s was positive.

Wigglesworth on July 23, 2012 at 4:26 PM

In my mind, Obama’s derision of those who “say” they’re smart and work hard–and the accompanying crowd laughter–confirm that Obama and those clowns in the crowd believe that it’s merely government or some other societal advantage that separates people who make lousy life choices from those who are successful.

I guess I’m not the only one who reads between the lines. He keeps telling us what he’s going to do to us but nobody seems to HEAR what he is saying.

Key West Reader on July 23, 2012 at 4:38 PM

They sound vaguely similar…if you don’t think about it, and given that 52% of voters went with Obama, it might actually work. Hopefully enough will put on their thinking caps this time around.

sharrukin on July 23, 2012 at 4:20 PM

Exactly. Given all the attention that PORGI’s comments have gotten over the past week or so, Romney should have chosen his words a little more carefully, knowing that the 0bamamedia would be ready to pounce on anything he says.
