New Brown ad attacks Warren over “you didn’t build it” argument

posted at 8:41 am on July 23, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

So, which Senate candidate in Massachusetts is running on the Kennedy legacy? Don’t be too quick to answer — because the man who scolded a debate moderator in the 2010 special election for referring to the Senate seat as “Ted Kennedy’s seat” does some Kennedy-invoking of his own to shame his opponent.  Scott Brown’s new web ad uses the words of John Kennedy in praise of American enterprise, Bill Clinton in praise of small business, and LBJ in praise of the American entrepreneurial spirit.  The ad then asks, How did we go from JFK, LBJ, and Clinton to Elizabeth Warren and Barack Obama?

Fear not, Reaganauts, Ronald Reagan gets some quality time in the ad, too.  It’s the use of traditional Democrats that’s most effective, though, and one suspects the claiming of the Kennedy mantle that will most sting Warren and the Democrats in Massachusetts.  The ad reminds voters that this isn’t their fathers’ Democratic Party any longer — a point Joe Lieberman made last week — and that Warren and Obama represent extremes on the Left that remain very much disconnected with mainstream American attitudes about enterprise and the role of government.  Brown had better hope that’s true in Massachusetts, but this is at least a very effective web spot.  If he can trim this down to a 60-second spot and put it on television, especially with Warren’s angry delivery, it’s a winner. Congrats on your second business which we all made. Your first business was obviously racist.

2:30 web ad. Why bother even making it?

lorien1973 on July 23, 2012 at 1:29 PM

web ads still reach a lot of people, and you can do in a 2:30 web ad, what you can’t do in a 20 second sound bite on TV, which is… make your point.

context matters.

Dynamite ad! Warren sounded like an angry fool!

Romney needs an ad like this!

Americans need to understand that strength in foreign policy is much more important to our national survival than strength in domestic policy.

Odysseus on July 23, 2012 at 9:14 AM

We won’t have a strong foreign policy possible, without a strong domestic policy.

If we can’t even handle our business at home, how can we expect other countries to take us seriously, when our foundation is crumbling around us?

You have to take care of yourself first, or you will never be in any good position to deal with others.

You know, this lack of any responsibility thing is fun. It’s hard to do at first — sharing blame and everything — but then it seems pretty easy. It’s a load-off.

But, I’m not sure everyone could do this at once. We would just “not fair” ourselves while we starved. A lot of hugging would be involved. Someone has to get it into their heads they are going to do something, and that means focusing back up into an individual. We’d probably follow that person, and celebrate them, and eat their sandwiches.

Strange … I know I’ve seen all this before somewhere.

Axe on July 23, 2012 at 2:07 PM

A great ad, but too long. Brown should keep the Kennedy quote, the Clinton quote, and Cherokee Lizzie’s quote, then finish with his own message about NOT demonizing business owners, condense it into 60 seconds, and run it on TV.

Steve Z on July 23, 2012 at 2:31 PM

This is the best ad I have ever seen. From the score to the people talking about America. I am going to donate to the Brown campaign today, and beg them to run this on TV here in Boston.

Chudi on July 23, 2012 at 3:43 PM

Brown is decidedly the lesser of two evils, but let’s not deify him. I’m lucky I don’t have to make that choice. I have enough angst over my decision to vote for Mittens. So much uncertainty about the future. The rock I’m trying to stand on is somewhere under all this sand.

swinia sutki on July 23, 2012 at 8:54 AM

You are a moron…a huge moron. Under what condition does voting for that little communist Warren an option or a choice for you or any right thinking person.

Beautiful ad.

If you are an ex-Dem, now registered with another party, or unaffiliated, you understand exactly what this ad says. And, if you are still clinging to the Democrat Party, this ad will open your eyes.

so-notbuyingit on July 23, 2012 at 3:46 PM

Really good ad. Using Dems vs. Dems is a great tactic. It shows that it’s Obama who’s out of touch, not just with America, but with his own party.

MrX on July 23, 2012 at 5:31 PM

God, Obama talks like an idiot.

They really need to make a 1984 themed ad about the collectivist future Ogabe is planning for us.

Ogabe on July 23, 2012 at 9:04 PM

This isn’t the first time Brown has made this work. In the first election his ad using video of JFK talking about cutting taxes was a big turning point and he also had a radio spot with Mary Jo Kopechne’s murderer supporting the religious exemption in Heathcare.

Needless to say the Dems all whined about it the first time. Boo-hoo, you’re using our own words against us to show what lying commies our party has become. Wah.

SittingDeadRed on July 23, 2012 at 10:38 PM

These people are just Communist wolves in Democrat sheeps clothing.

PappyD61 on July 23, 2012 at 9:28 AM

You have that logic backwards. These people are socialists, communists, and fascists running as Democrats. The Democrat party of Jackson, FDR, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson and Clinton (the latter two one degree more to the left than the others) is DEAD.

From Obama on, every Democrat running for President will have to toe the line on socialist, communist, and environmental-fascist interest groups (so say nothing of the extremist views on social or “moral” issues) if they want to be nominated for the “Democrat” nomination.

The enemy is now within, as much as it is outside our American borders.
