Looks like the Colorado detente is officially over

posted at 12:41 pm on July 23, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

After learning of the terrible shooting in Colorado last Friday morning, both President Obama and Mitt Romney spoke of the need to take some time to pray, reflect, and appreciate our loved ones, and instituted a sort of unofficial cease-fire over the weekend. Both camps pulled ads from Colorado, suspended campaign events, and put a hold on the nasty rhetoric. The reprieve had to end sometime, however, and while Mitt Romney jets off for a Britain-Poland-Israel international swing to bolster his foreign-policy creds, the Obama campaign is back with the “Romney is the most secretive candidate since Richard Nixon”-esque attacks.

This morning, Obama campaign communications director David Axelrod sent out a couple of his business-as-usual, Romney-is-a-total-villain type Tweets:

Behold, the sum of the extremely facepalm-worthy story from ABC that Axelrod tweeted: What is Mitt Romney hiding about his record managing the Olympics? Dun-dun-dun!

More than a decade has passed since Mitt Romney presided over the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, but the archival records from those games that were donated to the University of Utah to provide an unprecedented level of transparency about the historic event, remain off limits to the public. And some of the documents that may have shed the most light on Romney’s stewardship of the Games were likely destroyed by Salt Lake Olympic officials, ABC News has learned.

The archivists involved in preparing the documents for public review told ABC News that financial documents, contracts, appointment calendars, emails and correspondence are likely not included in the 1,100 boxes of Olympic records, and will not be part of the collection that will ultimately be made public.

“We don’t have that stuff,” said Elizabeth Rogers, the manuscript curator at the University’s Marriott Library. The decisions about what records to donate to the library were made by Olympics officials before they were shipped in 1,100 boxes to the university, she said. “That was done before we got it. I just know it wasn’t a decision we made. Everything we have will be available.” …

But the absence of publicly available records that detail the decisions he made while running the games has increasingly become an uneasy subject for the library, which has for months been receiving inquiries from journalists and other researchers trying to subject Romney’s version of the events to an analysis based on documents from the events.

Yes, because Mitt Romney didn’t orchestrate a rip-roaringly successful event about which nobody has even suggested there was anything sinister going on, and we know absolutely everything we could ever possibly wish to know about Barack Obama’s past and his administration. Le sigh — the detente of togetherness was brief, but I think it’s safe to say we’re definitely back to the he-said-she-said of daily presidential politics.

But the absence of publicly available records that detail the decisions he made while running the games has increasingly become an uneasy subject for the library, which has for months been receiving inquiries from journalists and other researchers trying to subject Romney’s version of the events to an analysis based on documents from the events.

Of course, the whole decision process for what to donate was based on the idea that journalists would someday want to analyze Mitt Romney’s campaign statements.

VegasRick on July 23, 2012 at 12:46 PM

From WSJ …

Some Democrats worry that the overhead built by the Obama camp over the past 15 months will prove impossible to sustain. Unless fundraising picks up, the Obama campaign may enter the season’s final stretch confronting hard choices: paring salaries, scaling back advertising or pulling out of swing states in a bid to control costs, these Democrats say.

The Obama campaign has become a microcosm of the country .. they over spend … they can’t raise any more revenues … what on God’s good Earth makes anybody think that they would go to “confronting hard choices” ?

The shameless hypocrisy drives me nuts. This, from the same folks who refused to show people Obama’s birth certificate? We know virtually nothing about Obama’s time in college (just that he went), what he wrote, what he did while organizin’ communities and paling around with Bill Ayers. Hell, he wouldn’t even go on the record as a state senator much, voting present…unless it had to do with leaving babies to die after botched abortions, that is. Everything about the man has been whitewashed and/or declared off-limits, yet this tool has the gall to suggest the other candidate is secretive?

changer1701 on July 23, 2012 at 12:53 PM

Dems and Axelrod think they can Palinize every GOP candidate. Too bad for them that Romney’s folks seem to be pretty well-prepared for such lame attacks. I only hope there are an equal number of opposition-research ‘journalists’ looking into Obama’s days as a community organizer: who he worked with, what he received, what was accomplished (if anything), and who picked-up the bills. Throw in a few references to Acorn too and this summer could end up quite entertaining.

In a world with an objective media that actually does the job as it’s intended, the Obama crew wouldn’t touch the secrecy issue with a ten foot pole knowing they are way more vunerable than Mitt Romney in that respect. Invoking Executive Priviledge on the Fast & Furious documents alone should be enough to shut these a-holes up about secrecy. But they know they will get away with it and it just pisses me off.

Mormon’s are like most other minority group, they create something that doesn’t exist…it’s a victim mentality.
Of course Mormon’s are secret, what’s so secret about that? They have “secret” ceremonies, they are clannish, so what? Italians are clannish, Cuban’s are, atheists are, that’s how groups work.
Priests are secret, they can’t tell confession…and they hang out with each other…

Mitt does business, a lot of business with Mormon’s, and he receives a lot of support from Mormon’s…ask Joe Lieberman if that’s unusual.

More dead in Texas than from the act of pure evil in Colorado. But the important thing to notice here, is even though more were killed in this auto accident, it does not serve the liberal agenda, because illegals may be involved and liberals support illegals and their activities, so this story will be ignored and made to disappear quickly. The Colorado incident can and is being used to serve the liberal agenda of: attacking law abiding gun owners and the Second Amendment, and therefore it will stay the lead story for weeks.

A stuffed wombat could “save” an Olympic event with US$1.3bn in money that it never earned nor raised.

Let us all know when you’re asked to do anything remotely similar and actually accomplish it, champ.

Where are Obama’s Senate records for Illinois again?

mouell on July 23, 2012 at 1:25 PM

@davidaxelrod all this after the historic ‘non-vetting’ of Obama since 2007? glass houses, glass houses.

The archivists involved in preparing the documents for public review told ABC News that financial documents, contracts, appointment calendars, emails and correspondence are likely not included in the 1,100 boxes of Olympic records

Probably reams and reams of documents discussing SOLO cups sizes, garbage containers, extension cords, meeting with the Pepsi guy, lawnmower rentals, etc., etc. You know, stuff people would really interested in if they hadn’t thrown it out.
